Worker Safety Within The Child Welfare System, Sylvia Hawranick Msw, Ed.D, Peg Mcguire Ph.D, Lisw, Candell Livingston Looman Lsw
Contemporary Rural Social Work Journal
Literature surrounding safety issues affecting the child welfare system is examined with a special emphasis on rural Appalachia. A review of the existing literature regarding personal safety and safety training of child welfare employees revealed limitations. The annual conference of the National Association of Social Workers in West Virginia provided a venue for gathering information regarding overall incidents of a threatening nature to child welfare social workers. Information regarding the numbers and types of safety trainings provided to the child welfare social workers was also explored. Two of the authors designed a workshop as a focus group from which information …

Better Health Through The Salud Para La Vida (Health For Life) Project, Susan Dollar Ph.D., Lcsw, Helen Reid Ph.D., Laraeda Sullivan Rn
Contemporary Rural Social Work Journal
The Salud para la Vida (Health for Life) project was a demonstration project through the Missouri Foundation for Health which utilized interdisciplinary collaborations to address rural Latino health needs in southwest Missouri. Social workers and other professionals were uniquely qualified to work across counties with church, business, school, emergency management, law enforcement and health clinic leadership in promoting and sustaining the project. Salud para la Vida is worthy of replication in other regions that face similar challenges in providing culturally competent health services to Latino immigrants.

OVERVIEW • N =116 mother-infant dyads (2 months old) • Coders completed the MBQS-mini 2 ways—forced vs. unforced q-sort distributions—to determine whether psychometric properties differed.
SENSITIVITY SCORES: • were virtually identical:r= .99.
BEHAVIORAL DOMAINS: • Attachment related domains: esponsiveness, Non-Interference, Affective Communication. • For all 3 (but not the Teaching domain) forced and unforced were highly correlated, and high internal consistency.
CONCLUSIONS: • Results support the use of forced q-sort data, but show no benefits associated with using forced over unforced distributions. Internal consistency was higher for the unforced teaching domain.

PURPOSE: To investigate the role of maternal sensitivity and interactive behavior in sibling attachment non-/concordance. RESULTS:1) Global measures of sensitivity suggest that mothers of concordant-secure and non-concordant infants demonstrate a similar degree of sensitivity towards each child. 2) Mothers with non-concordant infants interact more similarly with each child on domains of maternal sensitivity, compared to mothers whose infants are concordant.
CONCLUSION: The quality of the attachment relationship in families with non-concordant mother-infant relationships –in contrast to families with concordant dyads –does not appear to be systematically affected by maternal sensitivity as typically assessed. More detailed assessment of the interactions suggest …

Associations Between Caregivers' Global And Specific Attachment Representations And The Infant-Caregiver Attachment Relationship, Erinn Hawkins, Sheri Madigan, Diane Benoit, Greg Moran
Psychology Presentations
The primary objectives of the current study were: (1)to determine the extent to which caregivers’ conceptualizations of their own attachment history (global attachment representations are congruent with the way in which they conceptualize their relationships with a specific child (relationship-specific attachment representations); and (2)to evaluate whether these relationship-specific representations play a mediating role in the intergenerational transmission of attachment. Prenatal assessments of caregivers’ global attachment representations, as measured by the Adult Attachment Interview (AAI), and relationship-specific attachment representations, as measured by the Working Model of the Child Interview (WMCI), were obtained in a sample of 196 mother-infant dyads. Infant-caregiver attachment …

Physical Activity Levels Of Older Community-Dwelling Adults Are Influenced By Summer Weather Variables, Caitlin A. Brandon, Dawn P. Gill, Mark Speechley, Jason Gilliland, Gareth R. Jones
Geography & Environment Publications
Adequate daily physical activity (PA) is important for maintaining functional capacity and independence in older adults. However, most older adults in Canada do not engage in enough PA to sustain fitness and functional independence. Environmental influences, such as warmer daytime temperatures, may influence PA participation; however, few studies have examined the effect of summertime temperatures on PA levels in older adults. This investigation measured the influence of summertime weather variables on PA in 48 community-dwelling older adults who were randomly recruited from a local seniors’ community centre. Each participant wore an accelerometer for a single 7-consecutive-day period (between 30 May …

Research And Indigenous Participation: Critical Reflexive Methods, Ruth Nicholis
Aboriginal Policy Research Consortium International (APRCi)
In response to the theories of empowerment and social justice, research involving Indigenous peoples often demands participatory and collaborative methodologies. Consequently, researchers need to engage with reflexive evaluation of collective and negotiated design, data collection and data analysis to consider inter-personal and collective dynamics during the research process. What this means for those attempting counter-colonial research is that we cannot rely on a singular application of reflexivity to situate knowledge. Additional political and relational layers of reflexivity are essential to critically evaluate empowerment and participation by working ‘the spaces between’ through reflection about collaboration. By exploring ‘relationality’ as a methodology, …

Deeper Than Mere Consultation: Negotiating Land And Resource Management In British Columbia, Post-Delgamuukw, Andrea Holly Kennedy
Aboriginal Policy Research Consortium International (APRCi)
First Nations in Canada are seeking new land management relations that fully include and accommodate their Aboriginal rights, any outstanding Aboriginal title, and other interests. Various Canadian judicial decisions have stated that, at a minimum, consultation with First Nations is required when Aboriginal rights may be impacted by land-use activities. This research involved applying case study to identify critical elements that lead to something deeper than mere consultation, as called for in the 1997 Supreme Court of Canada Delgamuukw decision. This thesis describes six land management cases from four First Nations communities in British Columbia. The cases involve natural resources …

Gender And Place Influences On Health Risk Perspectives In Northern Canadian Aboriginal Communities, Cynthia G. Jardine, Amanda D. Boyd, Christopher M. Furgal
Aboriginal Policy Research Consortium International (APRCi)
Developing a better understanding of the factors underlying health and environmental risk perspectives has been the focus of significant research in recent years. Although many previous studies have shown that perspectives of risk are often associated with gender, sociocultural variables and place, our understanding of the relationship between these factors and risk remains equivocal. A research study was undertaken to develop better insights into the understanding and perspectives of various types of health risks in two sets of northern Canadian Aboriginal communities – the Yellowknives Dene First Nation communities of N’Dilo and Dettah in the Northwest Territories and the Inuit …

Maternal Sensitivity: From Child To The Neighborhood, Rossana Bisceglia, Heidi N. Bailey, Jennifer Jenkins, Greg Moran
Psychology Presentations
The purpose of this study was to explore the possible association between maternal sensitivity and distal factors such as neighborhood quality.
480 mother-child dyads were videotaped during a naturalistic interaction. Maternal sensitivity was assessed from video-tapes using the Maternal Behavior Q-sort (MBQS; Pederson & Moran, 1995).
Results of a hierarchical regression showed that maternal sensitivity was associated with: child characteristics (e.g. infant weight), maternal characteristics (e.g. age and depression) and family attributes (e.g. household income).
Interviewers’ ratings of neighborhood challenge and mothers’ report of neighborhood quality were found to significantly relate to maternal sensitivity and explained additional variance.
Results indicate …

Disorganized attachmentis seen as reflecting an infant’s lack of strategyfor coping with the stress of the Strange Situation procedure (SSP; Ainsworth et al., 1978)
The identification of disorganized attachment by Main and Solomon (1986) generated a large body of research into its antecedents and consequences.
Despite these advances, however, 1)few studies have employed a prospective longitudinal designto clarify antecedents of disorganization, and 2)most research has focused on predicting disorganization from single risk factors, rarely investigating possible interactions among child and parent or environmental variables.
The current study investigated the development of disorganized attachment across the first year from a prospective …

I hear it all the time from a variety of librarians: not going to invest in e-books until I know they will get used." In fact, I hear it most from school librarians who are low on budget and don't want to invest in e-books without proof: from someone else's school system, that the investment will payoff. Luckily, usage data is available for e-book publisher and aggregator products, and this data can be mined in a variety of ways to determine use of the product or particular titles.

Rural Life Census Data Center Newsletter: Private Industry Change In South Dakota, Priyanka Chatterjee, W. Trevor Brooks, Michael Mccurry
Census Data Center Newsletter Archive: 2007-2010
South Dakota leaders continue to emphasize the importance of economic development. One aspect of assessing economic development is private industry growth. The South Dakota Chamber of Commerce states:
Economic development is not a choice but rather a necessity. Economies that are advancing create jobs with higher pay, offer people amenities and necessities, and provide the tax base for schools, infrastructure, and law enforcement plus many of the intangibles known as “quality of life.” (South Dakota Chamber of Commerce 2006). Private sector jobs make up a large percentage of South Dakota’s jobs. Capitalistic economies, like the United States’, depend on the …

A strong body of research has developed over the last decade regarding the developmental outcomes of camp experiences of children and adolescents. However, few formal studies have been conducted to determine how camp experiences lead to deep personal change in young adult staff. In this study, the authors used focus groups and an online survey to explore transformation among young adult camp staff. Specifically, they examined (a) how camp involvement promotes transformation in young adults, and (b) what conditions in the camp environment promote personal change. Staff reported that personal change at camp was related to the developmental outcomes they …

Corruption is endemic in modern society, but history attests this problem is as old as states themselves. No single solution to date has garnered sufficient political and/or popular support to effect change. Could education play a role in changing the culture?

Ethnic Quilting Traditions In Magazine Articles 1900–1980, Colleen Hall-Patton
4th Biennial Symposium of the International Quilt Museum: Proceedings
Quilting, while often seen as a quintessentially American art form, has a long history throughout the world. Americans’ exposure to other traditions has been intermittent, but reflects other trends in the study of ethnic arts. In the 1950s, interest in folk art overlapped with interest in ethnic art as both create an exotic “other” to readers. Before 1960, that “other” was primarily Hawaiian and European. The 1960s added Cuna molas, and the 1970s saw an explosion of interest in worldwide quilt traditions from Tibetan to Amish.
This paper is a content analysis of quilting traditions referenced in magazine articles from …

When meeting the women in Nicaragua and considering their country’s history, one would surmise the complexities and what would seem like a difficult future. This research analyzed three aspects of Nicaraguan women and their leadership styles: 1) self-empowerment, 2) ability to bring change to women with limited resources socially, politically and economically in their communities, and 3) Transformation of women’s leadership.
Five Nicaraguan women were invited to participate because they have a unique understanding of their traditional ways of life and demonstrate leadership. Culture pervades their entire social, political and economic existence, and these women have a positive inclination toward …

Revisiting The Regulation Debate: The Effect Of Food Marketing On Childhood Obesity, Nicole E. Hunter
The University of New Hampshire Law Review
[Excerpt] “Despite the widespread concern regarding childhood obesity, there is broad divergence of opinion regarding responsibility for the crisis. Whether the government, food industry, or parents are accountable has become the focus of much debate. Public health groups have attempted various strategies to confront childhood obesity, such as litigation, legislation, and government regulation. While many researchers and advocates agree that government should play an affirmative role with respect to childhood obesity, they are very much divided over what that role should be. For example, although none of these acts has become law, eighty-six bills have been proposed regarding obesity since …

The key factors of the application of the airborne remote sensing technology for humanitarian demining are the minefield indicators [1] or the indicators of mine presence and the indicators of mine absence [2] and the analytical assessment of the contamination by the landmines [3]. The basic simple concept of the minefield indicators was given in [1], where it was related to the ordinary physical features of the artificial and natural objects in the mine suspicious area. Similar concept was used in other works, while in [2] were introduced signatures of the minefield indicators and additional contextual features. The signatures depend …
