Service-Learning In Tertiary Institutes : Nurturing A Giving Culture Among U-Students In Hong Kong, Cheung Ming, Alfred Chan Jun 2009

Service-Learning In Tertiary Institutes : Nurturing A Giving Culture Among U-Students In Hong Kong, Cheung Ming, Alfred Chan

Asia-Pacific Regional Conference on Service-Learning 亞太地區服務研習會議

Lingnan University is the first University in Hong Kong to set up an Office of Service-Learning that echoes its long-standing motto, ‘Education for Service’. Our mission, following the same tradition enacted in the 70s by the US leading universities, is not only to develop able scholars, but also to serve our community with the knowledge learned in classrooms. Service-Learning seeks to provide a vital university-community link through which students can find meanings in academic pursuits and in helping those in need. Serving in real life situations also facilitates students’ learning in lifelong commitments to community service, research and leadership. In …

The Effects Of A Facilitator In The Performance Of A Heterogeneous Working Group : A Service-Learning Exploration In Technology Education, Shing Sun Li

Asia-Pacific Regional Conference on Service-Learning 亞太地區服務研習會議

The importance of scientific knowledge and technology in daily life is duly emphasized in the reformed curriculum. Also, the mode of learning and teaching is to change from teacher-centered approach to cooperative approach. ‘Learning-by- doing’ and ‘cooperative-learning’ are considered as effective means to learn. Being a pioneer in science and technology education, the researcher’s school organizes workshops for primary students and their families across the Territories each year. In the workshop held last November, secondary students who acted as facilitators, practiced their ‘generic skills’ whilst the primary students and their parents ‘constructed’ knowledge and consequently ‘valued’ their family activities. The …

The Quest For Learning In Service-Learning : Approaches And Variations In The Asia-Pacific, Betty Cernol-Mccann Jun 2009

The Quest For Learning In Service-Learning : Approaches And Variations In The Asia-Pacific, Betty Cernol-Mccann

Asia-Pacific Regional Conference on Service-Learning 亞太地區服務研習會議

The practice of Service-Learning as a teaching methodology has varying approaches across learning communities. This is to be expected of a methodology that recognizes diversities, context-based learning, and meaning-making in teaching-learning. As a communal learning enterprise, how can learning be enhanced in Service-Learning? How can Service-Learning aid the formation of a learning community? Based on her observation of the Service-Learning practices in the Asia-Pacific, the author proposes ways to maximize learning outcomes through partnerships and building of alliances.

Cross Boarders And Reap Beyond The Obvious Outcomes, Jane Szutu Permaul Jun 2009

Cross Boarders And Reap Beyond The Obvious Outcomes, Jane Szutu Permaul

Asia-Pacific Regional Conference on Service-Learning 亞太地區服務研習會議

What borders are we talking about, and how might we be enriched by crossing these borders? Answers to these questions can broaden our horizons with reference to the borders that we need to cross in order to develop and institutionalized Service-Learning. Furthermore, identification of outcomes from Service-Learning beyond the obvious is essential to integrate Service-Learning into the academic curricula. We know that Service-Learning yield student learning, but is it worth academic credits? We know community service is performed, but what else?

Ageing And Family In Asian Society : Future Roles Of Our Younger Generations, Keiko Osaki Jun 2009

Ageing And Family In Asian Society : Future Roles Of Our Younger Generations, Keiko Osaki

Asia-Pacific Regional Conference on Service-Learning 亞太地區服務研習會議

Owing to a long-term decline in fertility and improvement in longevity, the rapid process of population ageing has become an emerging reality that challenges Asian society. Along with such transformations, the family in Asia is also experiencing unprecedented changes, in terms of its structure, function and value. Prof. Osaki addresses inevitable socio-demographic changes shaping the societies in Asia and calls attention to the needs to strengthen inter-generational solidarity. Using the framework of the United Nations World Programme of Action for Youth (WAPY), she stresses that the facilitation of interdependence between younger and older persons should be a prerequisite to meeting …

The Effects Of Portfolio Size On International Equity Home Bias Puzzle, Jinlan Ni Jun 2009

The Effects Of Portfolio Size On International Equity Home Bias Puzzle, Jinlan Ni

Economics Faculty Publications

This paper investigates a new explanation for the international equity home bias puzzle based on an endogenous asymmetric information model. Using a cross-sectional mutual fund data set, it is found that the degrees of home bias across fund managers are negatively correlated to the asset sizes under their management. This result is consistent with the theoretical prediction in the endogenous asymmetric information model—the portfolio managers with the larger assets tend to acquire more information regarding foreign equity and, hence, hold more foreign equity holdings.

A set of links to readings about 6/4 from various sources:

1. A short and straightforward documentary from Al Jazeera (in English), posted at YouTube in two parts: Part I and Part II. This documentary has notably less emphasis on the influence of Western-style democracy than the average (Western) doc on the subject, and more on the opposition to authoritarianism…

2. Mara Hvistendahl has written a piece for The Chronicle of Higher Education on a well-trod topic—the shifts in China post-89, particularly among those of the 6/4 generation. Yet, Hvistendahl, in addition to getting the basics right (unlike others we …

U.S. Human Rights Activism And Plan Colombia, Winifred L. Tate Jun 2009

U.S. Human Rights Activism And Plan Colombia, Winifred L. Tate

Faculty Scholarship

Non-governmental organizations claim to play a central role in defining U.S. foreign policy, particularly in the field of human rights. Here, I will examine the role of human rights and humanitarian groups in the debates over U.S. foreign policy towards Colombia, focusing on the design and subsequent additional appropriations for Plan Colombia, a multi-billion dollar aid package beginning in 2000. I argue that NGOs were able to build on the legacy of prior human rights activism focusing on Latin America, but failed to achieve significant grassroots mobilization around this issue. I examine the structural issues limiting such mobilization, as well …

Displacement-Related Earnings Losses: Evaluating Trade Adjustment Assistance And Wage Insurance, Roger White Jun 2009

Displacement-Related Earnings Losses: Evaluating Trade Adjustment Assistance And Wage Insurance, Roger White

Economics

The author examines the effectiveness of stylized versions of the Trade Adjustment Assistance (TAA) and Alternative TAA (or wage insurance) programs in reducing displacement-related earnings losses. Wage insurance subsidies and returns to TAAfunded training are applied to estimates of proportional earnings losses, reported by White, that were generated using National Longitudinal Survey of Youth 1979 data spanning the period from 1979 to 2000. Wage insurance reduces the typical worker’s losses by 14.4 percent, while TAA-funded training is estimated to reduce losses by 23.7 percent. However, variation in the time paths and magnitudes of losses produces considerable variation in the effects …

Filming Postbourgeois Suburbia: Office Space And The New American Suburb, Shaun Huston Jun 2009

Filming Postbourgeois Suburbia: Office Space And The New American Suburb, Shaun Huston

Geography Faculty Publications and Presentations

The article examines how the depiction of American suburbia in motion pictures illustrates the physical, cultural, and demographic changes in modern suburban society. Particular attention is paid to the portrayal of the suburban landscape in the 1999 film "Office Space," written and directed by Mike Judge. The "polymorphous" landscape of "Office Space" shows single family homes along side office parks, apartments, restaurants and retail spaces. How the film introduces new sources of angst and oppression to contemporary suburbia is assessed. It is suggested that the film highlights the fact that the suburbs Americans actually live in are fundamentally different from …

Scoping Study Of The Effects Of Aging On Landmines, Daniele Ressler Jun 2009

Scoping Study Of The Effects Of Aging On Landmines, Daniele Ressler

CISR Studies and Reports

The Mine Action Information Center at James Madison University has partnered with a British EOD consultancy company, C King Associates Ltd, to conduct a preliminary study into the effects of aging on landmines. This project entailed examination and disassembly of several types of anti-personnel mines, a literature review of relevant material and analysis of the initial findings.

The study confirms a fairly obvious assumption: The characteristics of mines change significantly as they grow older. However, while this situation is constantly observed in the field through the recovery of rotted, rusted and damaged mines, it has never been adequately investigated. The …

Health Insurance Fraud: An Overview, Sara J. Rosenbaum, Nancy Lopez, Scott Stifler Jun 2009

Health Insurance Fraud: An Overview, Sara J. Rosenbaum, Nancy Lopez, Scott Stifler

Health Policy and Management Faculty Publications

In 2007, the U.S. spent nearly $2.3 trillion on health care and public and private insurers processed more than 4 billion health insurance claims. The National Health Care Anti-Fraud Association (NHCAA) has estimated that, conservatively, 3% of all health care spending—or $68 billion—is lost to health care fraud. Other estimates by government and law enforcement agencies place fraud-related losses as high as 10% of annual health care spending; at this rate, the losses in 2007 alone – over $220 billion – would have been enough to cover the uninsured.

This report, funded by the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation, delves into …

South Burlington, Vt: Mixed-Use Comes To O’Dell Parkway, Ryan Neale, Brett Richardson, Richard Barringer Jun 2009

South Burlington, Vt: Mixed-Use Comes To O’Dell Parkway, Ryan Neale, Brett Richardson, Richard Barringer

Planning

The proposed redevelopment of an underutilized property along major travel routes in South Burlington presents possibilities for infill development. The City of South Burlington, the developer, neighbors, and a variety of public and nonprofit financial partners work together to create a mixed-use residential/commercial development to meet a variety of housing and community needs. The case study describes the obstacles overcome to make redevelopment possible through zoning and regulatory changes, negotiation with local residents over traffic and other concerns, support from state and local housing advocates, and political leadership; as well as the development’s application of smart growth principles.

APIAS Monograph 專題論文

Owing to the advancement of medical technology, food availability, improved environment and health conditions, population ageing is a phenomenon that is occurring both globally and locally. In Hong Kong, the elderly population defined as comprising people aged 65 and over, was 653,700 in 1996 (Census & Statistics Department 2005a). By 2006, it will be 839,600 (Census & Statistics Department 2004), representing a net increase of 33%. During the same period (1996—2006), the increase in the old-old group (aged 75 and over) is 59%. In Hong Kong, the decrease in birth rate coupled with an increase in average life expectancy, and …
