Externalities In The Classroom: How Children Exposed To Domestic Violence Affect Everyone’S Kids, Scott E. Carrell, Mark L. Hoekstra Jun 2009

Externalities In The Classroom: How Children Exposed To Domestic Violence Affect Everyone’S Kids, Scott E. Carrell, Mark L. Hoekstra

University of Kentucky Center for Poverty Research Discussion Paper Series

There is widespread perception that externalities from troubled children are significant, though measuring them is difficult due to data and methodological limitations. We estimate the negative spillovers caused by children from troubled families by exploiting a unique data set in which children’s school records are matched to domestic violence cases. We find that children from troubled families significantly decrease their peers’ reading and math test scores and increase misbehavior in the classroom. The achievement spillovers are robust to within-family differences and when controlling for school-by-year effects, providing strong evidence that neither selection nor common shocks are driving the results.

Science Tools To Implement Ecosystem Based Management In Massachusetts (Draft), Mrag Americas, Incorporated, Massachusetts Ocean Partnership, Woods Hole Oceanographic Institute, Urban Harbors Institute, University Of Massachusetts Boston

Urban Harbors Institute Publications

In this report we provide a framework for implementing ecosystem based management (EBM) and suggest a range of science information tools and their appropriate application to the decision making process. These tools can be broadly classified as modeling tools, decision analysis tools, and indicators. Modeling tools allow the user to organize data, communicate scientific findings to management and stakeholder audiences, and test alternative management scenarios. When used unwisely, however, models can preclude options, present unusable scenarios, generate results in scales that differ from management needs, and impose huge time, data, and technical requirements (Manno et al., 2008). Decision analysis tools …

Nebraska Leads In Irrigated Land, Bruce B. Johnson, Ryan Lukassen Jun 2009

Nebraska Leads In Irrigated Land, Bruce B. Johnson, Ryan Lukassen

Cornhusker Economics

Nebraska is #1. According to the most recent U.S. 2007 Census of Agriculture (released in February of this year), Nebraska now has more irrigated farmland than any other state. It is common knowledge to observers of our agricultural economy that our state has been in an irrigation expansion mode for several years. But what may be surprising to many is that simultaneously, other major irrigation areas of the country have witnessed reduced irrigated acreage.

Does Sorting Make A Difference In The Sat’S Prediction Of Course Grades And Cumulative Gpa At Macalester College?, Yuen Ting Liu Jun 2009

Does Sorting Make A Difference In The Sat’S Prediction Of Course Grades And Cumulative Gpa At Macalester College?, Yuen Ting Liu

Economics Honors Projects

This paper estimates the predictive power of the SAT for college success. Most studies use GPA as a proxy for college success, but GPA is subject to differing grading standards across instructors and departments. Using individual course grades of Macalester College students from 1996 to 2005, this paper uses fixed effects to control for students sorting themselves into particular departments and courses. After controlling for sorting by major, a general trend emerges: the Math SAT is more predictive for science and math-related social science majors while the Verbal SAT is more predictive for language majors. After controlling for sorting by …

June 4 Around The World: California Jun 2009

June 4 Around The World: California

China Beat Blog: Archive 2008-2012

We wrote to the peripatetic Pico Iyer, a Friend of the Blog, to see how June 4th was marked wherever he happened to be this year on the anniversary date. He sent us the following ruminations, in which he alludes to the mid-1980s when he first went to Beijing and first saw Lhasa, at a time when each, in ways he’s described elsewhere, was a very different place than it is now:

On the Fourth of June–the great annual feast-day at my old English school, the very opposite of its associations for modern Chinese–I was, as I so often am, …

Racial/Ethnic Differences In The Provision Of Health-Related Programs Among American Religious Congregations, R. Khari Brown, Amy Adamczyk Jun 2009

Racial/Ethnic Differences In The Provision Of Health-Related Programs Among American Religious Congregations, R. Khari Brown, Amy Adamczyk

The Journal of Sociology & Social Welfare

Using national data from the Faith Communities Today 2000 survey, the current study builds upon Lincoln and Mamiya's (1990) argument of the civically active Black Church. Originally used to assess the relative activism of Black and White congregations, the current study suggests that Black congregations are more likely to provide health programs than are predominantly White, Hispanic and Asian congregations. The greater involvement of Black congregations in the provision of health programs likely has much to do with the historical and continued cultural, spiritual, and political role that churches play in Black communities.

Communities And Colleges: Utilizing Public Relations Techniques And Strategies To Solve Chronic Town-Gown Problems, Kristin M. Leavey Jun 2009

Communities And Colleges: Utilizing Public Relations Techniques And Strategies To Solve Chronic Town-Gown Problems, Kristin M. Leavey

Theses and Dissertations

The purpose of this thesis was to determine what public relations techniques and strategies could be utilized to alleviate or even solve the five most prevalent problems faced by colleges and their communities. This researcher also verified that the top five problems as determined in a 1998 study still reign as the major problems in 2004.

An extensive literature review was conducted in conjunction with in-depth interviews with three college relations directors, surveys sent via email to over 1,000 college relations personnel, and intercept studies within the communities of the three chosen colleges.

It was concluded that the top five …

Do State Regulatory Institutions Matter: Using Network Theory To Explore Linkages Between Air Policy Boards And Pollution Outcomes, Debra Jacobs Jun 2009

Do State Regulatory Institutions Matter: Using Network Theory To Explore Linkages Between Air Policy Boards And Pollution Outcomes, Debra Jacobs

Theses and Dissertations

The purpose of this study is to test an adapted model of network theory against state air pollution control institutions. Air pollution control presents a regulatory problem that has interstate, intrastate and multiple federal dimensions. It is one of extreme complexity and uncertainty, from both a regulatory and scientific perspective. The changing political environment federally has enabled states to redefine their roles in the regulatory process (Adler, 1997; Krane, 2007). Drawing from network theory in intergovernmental policy processes my research tests three key factors in explaining state air pollution levels: tenure in office of the air policy administrator, the use …
