Redefining Library Partnerships: Sharing Physical And Digital Space With The Campus Community, Jeanine Marie Scaramozzino, Marisa Ramirez

Library Scholarship

Cal Poly State University librarians are engaging faculty, staff and students by transforming physical and digital library spaces to better support teaching and learning. A Science Café program hosted in the Learning Commons Library Café provides informal opportunities to come together over coffee, share current faculty research, and make salient the connections that exist between the numerous and seemingly unrelated areas of study on campus: science, humanities and the social sciences. The campus institutional repository (IR), DigitalCommons@CalPoly, is an ever-growing digital archive of faculty research, student work and campus documents which has facilitated new collaborations between faculty, campus constituents and …

Morality And Religion In China’S Rise, Beatrice Leung Jun 2009

Morality And Religion In China’S Rise, Beatrice Leung

Conference on “Improving the Human Destiny"

China is rising aiming at the status of a great power. Yet internally the Chinese society is troubling with by various kinds of crimes. Statistical figures reflect that the rise of economy accompanies the rocketing of crime rate in the last decade. Hu Jin Tao called for the building of Morality in 2003. Traditionally, religion has been the reservoir of morality, but China does not invite religion to be the partner in helping the building of Morality. This paper discusses why the effect is very limited in China’s campaign of building morality when it works by selectively choosing its partner …

The "Three Happinesses" And The "Happiness Formula" : Lessons From The Hong Kong Evidence, Lok Sang Ho Jun 2009

The "Three Happinesses" And The "Happiness Formula" : Lessons From The Hong Kong Evidence, Lok Sang Ho

Conference on “Improving the Human Destiny"

The paper draws on results of surveys conducted in Hong Kong since 2005 to test the "three happinesses theory" and "the happiness formula." The "three happinesses theory" suggests that the positive or negative feelings as well as the strengths of such affective feelings associated with an activity would depend on the "state of mind" of the individual engaging in the activity, and this would depend on prospective as well as retrospective considerations. The "three happinesses" are based on a "whole life experience," the capability for which can be "switched on" using the happiness formula consisting of Love, Insight, Fortitude, and …

June 4th Around The World: Notes From One Week After The Anniversary

China Beat Blog: Archive 2008-2012

A week (or so) after the anniversary of the “May 35th” events (as some Chinese netizens put it to circumvent automatic blocks on mention of a highly charged date), we got several more responses to our request to Friends of the Blog for word on how June 4th was commemorated, discussed, or ignored in various parts of the world. The most substantial (reproduced in full below) is a second contribution to the series (click herefor her first) by Paola Voci (an Italian-born, American-trained, New Zealand-based specialist in Chinese visual culture whose book, China on Video: Small Screen Realities, is due …

War And Hiv In Latin America, Shawn Smallman Jun 2009

War And Hiv In Latin America, Shawn Smallman

International & Global Studies Faculty Publications and Presentations

Conflict has shaped the HIV pandemic from its inception, from the spread of HIV-1 in Central Africa, to the diffusion of HIV-2 from Portuguese Africa to the globe. At the same time, the relationship between HIV and conflict has been non-linear and poorly understood. Nancy Mock and her colleagues have been almost the only scholars to propose a model to understand this relationship. Their work suggests that several key variables (such as the time scale of the conflict, the characteristics of the parties involved, and the geographic scale of the fighting) explain wide variations in how warfare appears to have …

The Association Between Task Conflict, Relationship Conflict, And Peer Performance Appraisals, Marc Anthony Lukasik Jun 2009

The Association Between Task Conflict, Relationship Conflict, And Peer Performance Appraisals, Marc Anthony Lukasik

College of Science and Health Theses and Dissertations

This investigation examined the association between relationship conflict, task conflict, and peer appraisals of performance. The association between conflict types and performance appraisals was examined using both the group as a referent (i.e., members provide overall ratings representing the group as a whole), as well as an individual as a referent (i.e., members rate an individual member of the group). In an effort to best explain these associations, several moderating variables proposed in the literature were examined in conjunction with conflict types and performance. These moderators included task routineness, trust, and cooperative goal interdependence.

The study was conducted using both student …

Operationalizing The Antecedents Of Work-Family Positive Spillover: A Longitudinal Study, Kristi Lynn Zimmerman Jun 2009

Operationalizing The Antecedents Of Work-Family Positive Spillover: A Longitudinal Study, Kristi Lynn Zimmerman

Dissertations and Theses

The primary goal of the current study was to examine the antecedents of work-to-family and family-to-work positive spillover. This dissertation examined the relationship between work, family, and personal domain resources with the outcomes of work-to-family and family-to-work positive spillover. Specifically, five types of resources were tested as predictors of positive spillover as proposed by Greenhaus and Powell's (2006) theory of work-family enrichment. To test these relationships, constructs from the work and family domains were used to operationalize each of the proposed resources, and a longitudinal research design was applied in order to establish these resources as predictors of positive spillover. …

Market, Capitalism And Hong Kong’S Future : The Relevance Of Karl Polanyi And Fernand Braudel, Po Keung Hui Jun 2009

Market, Capitalism And Hong Kong’S Future : The Relevance Of Karl Polanyi And Fernand Braudel, Po Keung Hui

Conference on “Improving the Human Destiny"

This paper draws on the insights of Karl Polanyi and Fernand Braudel on “capitalism” and “market” to analyze the experience and discourse of the economic development in Hong Kong, the role-model of “free market capitalism”, with a specific focus on the last two decades -- the so-called “neo-liberal” era. The first part of the paper re-reads Polanyi and Braudel in the midst of the current financial crisis and economic depression, aiming at teasing out a theoretical perspective for a better understanding of our past and current economy. The second part argues that, as evidenced in the persistence of anti-competition practices …

International Evidence On The Social Context Of Well-Being, John F. Helliwell, Christopher P. Barrington-Leigh, Anthony Harris, Haifang Huang Jun 2009

International Evidence On The Social Context Of Well-Being, John F. Helliwell, Christopher P. Barrington-Leigh, Anthony Harris, Haifang Huang

Conference on “Improving the Human Destiny"

This paper uses the first three waves of the Gallup World Poll to investigate differences across countries, cultures and regions in the factors linked to life satisfaction, paying special attention to the social context. Our principal findings are: First, using the larger pooled sample, we find that answers to the satisfaction with life and Cantril ladder questions provide consistent views of what constitutes a good life, with an average of the two measures providing a clearer picture than either measure on its own. Second, we find strong evidence for the importance of both income and social context variables in explaining …

The Future Of Democratic Capitalism : A Human Capital Perspective, Isaac Ehrlich Jun 2009

The Future Of Democratic Capitalism : A Human Capital Perspective, Isaac Ehrlich

Conference on “Improving the Human Destiny"

Schumpeter’s diagnosis of capitalism seems to be fully validated by the financial crisis and severe recession, except that he was wrong on his main prediction – that capitalism’s flaws would cause it to lose its vitality. The reality is that Democratic Capitalism has flourished despite episodes of depression, war, prohibition, and intrusive interventionist policies. It is therefore a mistake to engage in a critical assessment of capitalism while world economies are still close to the ebb of the business cycle. Free markets cannot abolish the business cycle in the same way that free trade and free capital flows cannot abolish …

A Different Path From Tangshan To Wenchuan : China’S Participation In The International Disaster Reduction Regimes And Its Domestic Impacts, Lin Peng

Conference on “Improving the Human Destiny"

The catastrophic Wenchuan earthquake provides an uncomfortable opportunity to examine China’s disaster management system. This paper would approach this issue from the perspective of international politics, trying to explore the interaction between the international factors and the development of China’s domestic disaster administrative system.

Change And Continuity In East Asian 1800-2000 : Dynamism And Transformation Of Geo-Political China Region, Takeshi Hamashita Jun 2009

Change And Continuity In East Asian 1800-2000 : Dynamism And Transformation Of Geo-Political China Region, Takeshi Hamashita

Conference on “Improving the Human Destiny"

It has long been the practice to analyze modern Asia from the viewpoint of nations and international relationships. Through this bipartite framework, much historiographical labor has been expended examining the degree of so-called "nation-building" and the acceptance of "international" law (萬國公法) in the respective Asian countries.

This approach has also been understood to reveal the degree of "modernization" of Asian countries. After much controversy concerning the adaptability of this Western-oriented modernization model to Asia, however, it has also been argued that "areas" or "regions" - an intermediate category between the nation and the world generally - should be analyzed in …

Job Satisfaction And The Labor Market Institutions In Urban China, John S. Heywood, W. Stanley Siebert, Xiangdong Wei Jun 2009

Job Satisfaction And The Labor Market Institutions In Urban China, John S. Heywood, W. Stanley Siebert, Xiangdong Wei

Conference on “Improving the Human Destiny"

The determinants of worker job satisfaction are estimated using a representative survey of three major cities in China. Legally segregated migrants, floaters, earn significantly less than otherwise equivalent non-migrants but routinely report greater job satisfaction, a finding not previously reported. We confirm a positive role for membership in the communist party but find that it exists only for non-migrants suggesting a club good aspect to membership. In contrast to earlier studies, many controls mirror those found in western democracies including the "paradox of the contented female worker.

Happiness And Development : The Effect Of Mental Well-Being On Economic Growth, Ben Li, Yi Lu Jun 2009

Happiness And Development : The Effect Of Mental Well-Being On Economic Growth, Ben Li, Yi Lu

Conference on “Improving the Human Destiny"

This paper examines the impact of overall happiness of citizens on economic growth across countries. We first document a robust positive correlation between overall happiness level and economic growth across countries, and then exploit the variation in sex imbalance, a factor that impedes normal mating and thus causes unhappiness, to instrument happiness and identify its causal impact on economic growth. Our results show that happiness has a positive causal effect on economic growth. Other things being equal, a one-standard-deviation increase in happiness raises growth rate by approximately two percentage points. In addition, we find that life expectancy and investment ratio …

Berkshire Encyclopedia On New Media

China Beat Blog: Archive 2008-2012

Berkshire Publishing has recently published its Encyclopedia of China with contributions by China scholars like Sherman Cochran, Kerry Brown, Judy Polumbaum and many others and featuring one thousand entries on a diverse range of historical, social and cultural topics.

A few of the entries caught our attention as a little unusual for a print encyclopedia—including entries on “internet use,” “online social networking,” and “blogging.” As these topics are of particular interest to us (and we’re guessing to many of you, too), we were curious how Berkshire would cover them in the encyclopedia format. Here are a few relevant excerpts (selected …

Returning To The Sources: The Literature Of Christian Librarianship, Gregory A. Smith

Faculty Publications and Presentations

By definition, a research study explores new intellectual territory yet builds on previous inquiry that has led up to it. However, many sources that explore the connections between Christian faith and the information professions fail to acknowledge the existence of prior discourse on the subject. The author has assembled a database of more than 450 sources that discuss topics such as philosophy and ethics of librarianship from a Christian perspective; the mediation of Christian/religious information in various library contexts; Christian, religious, and theological publishing; and more. Insights from these sources can help readers develop professionally and engage in productive dialogue …

The Impact Of The Gay And Feminist Liberation Movements On The Objectification Of The Male Body In Popular Magazines That Target A Male Audience, Miro Lestanin Jun 2009

The Impact Of The Gay And Feminist Liberation Movements On The Objectification Of The Male Body In Popular Magazines That Target A Male Audience, Miro Lestanin

Sociology Honors Projects

My study analyzes the change in the portrayal of the male body in the public sphere. I examine whether this change is related to the appearance of the gay and feminist liberation movements in 1960s that reintroduced the gay subculture into the mainstream political and social realm. Furthermore, I explore the influence of these movements on the commercialization and objectification of the male body that are used as marketing tools to attract homosexual and metrosexual customers. I analyzed a random sample of 600 advertisements that contained a representation of the male body covering the time span from 1930 to 1990 …
