Consistency Of Developmental Outcomes Of 4-H Camp Experiences Over Time And Across Sites, Sarah Baughman, Barry A. Garst, Nicholas Fuhrman Jul 2009

Consistency Of Developmental Outcomes Of 4-H Camp Experiences Over Time And Across Sites, Sarah Baughman, Barry A. Garst, Nicholas Fuhrman

Publications

The purpose of this study was to explore the developmental outcomes of 4-H camp experiences as identified by parents and guardians. The authors examined (1) the changes in youth life skill behaviors that parents/guardians attribute to a 5-day residential 4-H camping experience, (2) their perceptions of consistency in the life skills gained across multiple camps and years, and (3) differences in life skill development between male and female youth participants. Parents of campers ages 9-13 were randomly sampled in 2001 (n=363), 2004 (n=326), and 2007 (n=326) and asked to report changes in their child's behavior following camp. Results indicate an …

China And Taiwan: A Future Of Peace? A Study Of Economic Interdependence, Taiwanese Domestic Politics And Cross-Strait Relations, Chien-Kai Chen Jul 2009

China And Taiwan: A Future Of Peace? A Study Of Economic Interdependence, Taiwanese Domestic Politics And Cross-Strait Relations, Chien-Kai Chen

Josef Korbel Journal of Advanced International Studies

In this paper, I address the question of whether growing economic ties between China and Taiwan will lead to peace in the Taiwan Strait by examining the relationship between Taiwan’s domestic politics and China-Taiwan economic exchanges and its resulting impact on ChinaTaiwan relations. I argue that the growing economic ties between China and Taiwan will lead to a relatively peaceful Taiwan Strait; Taiwan’s domestic politics is the key intervening variable that links the former to the latter. Taiwan’s growing economic ties with China have politically benefited Taiwanese politicians who have pro-China attitudes and advocate a reconciliatory China policy. The resulting …

People, Partnerships And Collaboration: Understanding And Improving Intelligence In Counterinsurgency, Matt Calvin Jul 2009

People, Partnerships And Collaboration: Understanding And Improving Intelligence In Counterinsurgency, Matt Calvin

Josef Korbel Journal of Advanced International Studies

The goal of intelligence is to inform decision makers. While this general goal holds true for counterinsurgencies, the nature of the target requires an understanding of intelligence that is unique from the traditional Cold War focus on nation-state adversaries. This paper seeks to build upon the substantial current literature on population-centric counterinsurgency, theoretical studies of intelligence as a discipline, and the recent literature on military intelligence in counterinsurgency to construct an innovative model of intelligence as it relates to full-spectrum counterinsurgency. This model of intelligence is then utilized to provide recommendations on how intelligence efforts in counterinsurgency can be improved, …

Causes Of The 1962 Sino-Indian War: A Systems Level Approach, Aldo D. Abitol Jul 2009

Causes Of The 1962 Sino-Indian War: A Systems Level Approach, Aldo D. Abitol

Josef Korbel Journal of Advanced International Studies

The emergence of the BRIC (Brazil, Russia, India and China) nations as regional powers and future challengers to U.S. hegemony has been predicted by many, and is a topic of much debate among the IR community today. Interestingly, three of these nations have warred against each other in the past and, coincidentally or not, it was the nations that shared borders: India and China and China and Russia. This paper attempts an in-depth case study of the 1962 Sino-Indian conflict from an angle that differs from previous studies. Past explorations of this conflict have focused on domestic or the psychological …

Positive Country Images, Trust And Public Support For European Integration, Gaspare Genna Jul 2009

Positive Country Images, Trust And Public Support For European Integration, Gaspare Genna

Departmental Papers (PS)

In this paper I contribute to the scholarship on public support for European integration by arguing that member-states’ positive images influence individuals’ support decisions. An attribute of this positive image is trust, which individuals utilize given the complexity of the integration process, the salient impact it has on their lives and the low levels of information individuals possess. The use of a member-state’s image is therefore a short-cut to evaluate integration’s impact on individuals. As the development of integration is strongly influenced by the relatively more economically powerful member-state, trust in Germany increases the level of support, more so than …

Detection Of Malingering Via Cognitive Cues, Birgit M. Smart Jul 2009

Detection Of Malingering Via Cognitive Cues, Birgit M. Smart

Doctoral Dissertations

Malingering is a frequently encountered problem of faking psychological or physiological symptoms or exaggerating existing conditions for external gain. Malingerers typically are seen in clinical and forensic settings and create a burden to our society due to loss of economic resources or professional time. The impact of malingering is difficult to calculate due to problems with identifying actual cases of malingering. Psychological tests traditionally have been used in the assessment of malingering. Despite major improvements in instruments and clinical interviewing techniques, however, no failsafe assessment tool has been identified for the accurate detection of malingering. Cognitive studies of lie detection …

Examination Of The Clinical Benefit Of Adding Reversal Theory Concepts To The Expressive Writing Paradigm, Stephanie Ellis Jul 2009

Examination Of The Clinical Benefit Of Adding Reversal Theory Concepts To The Expressive Writing Paradigm, Stephanie Ellis

Doctoral Dissertations

Expressive writing as a form of emotional disclosure produces many physical and psychological benefits (Pennebaker, 2004). Central to the present study are findings that expressive writing decreases symptoms of depression, anxiety, and PTSD (Koopman, Ismailji, Holmes, Classen, Palesh, & Wales, 2005; Opre, Coman, Kallay, Rotaru, & Manier, 2005; Russ, 1992). Reversal Theory (RT) suggests that individuals experience the world from eight different psychological states including serious, playful, conforming, rebellious, mastery, sympathy, self, and other (Apter, 2007). Teaching individuals to be aware of and elicit these states also decreases depression and anxiety (Charat, 2006). The present study sought to determine if …

Improving Medicaid's Continuity Of Coverage And Quality Of Care, Leighton C. Ku, Patricia Mactaggart, Fouad Pervez, Sara J. Rosenbaum Jul 2009

Improving Medicaid's Continuity Of Coverage And Quality Of Care, Leighton C. Ku, Patricia Mactaggart, Fouad Pervez, Sara J. Rosenbaum

Health Policy and Management Faculty Publications

Medicaid provides health insurance coverage to tens of millions of low-income children, parents, seniors and people with disabilities. Unfortunately, Medicaid enrollment is like a leaky sieve; every year millions of people enroll, only to subsequently lose their coverage, despite still being eligible, because of inefficient and cumbersome paperwork requirements. The interruptions in coverage affect the continuity and effectiveness of health care received. Interruptions also impair quality monitoring and improvement activities because many Medicaid enrollees were not enrolled long enough to assess the quality of their care. The presumption is that people who have been enrolled for less than a year …

Paying Medicare Private Plans By Competitive Bidding: Not The Same As Costs In Regular Medicare, Brian Biles, Jonah Pozen Jul 2009

Paying Medicare Private Plans By Competitive Bidding: Not The Same As Costs In Regular Medicare, Brian Biles, Jonah Pozen

Health Policy and Management Faculty Publications

Medicare Advantage plans are now paid $11 billion a year, and $150 billion over 10 years, more than costs in regular fee-for-service (FFS) Medicare. In the past two years there have been discussions about reducing MA payments to the level of 100 percent of average costs in FFS and using the savings to offset the costs of new Federal health initiatives such as health care reform. Earlier this year, OMB proposed "reducing Medicare overpayments to private insurers through competitive payments." Under this proposal, MA plan "payments would be based on an average of plans' bids submitted to Medicare." This issue …

The United Auto Workers Union As American Vanguard, 1935 To 1970: Reality Or Illusion?, Victor G. Devinatz Jul 2009

The United Auto Workers Union As American Vanguard, 1935 To 1970: Reality Or Illusion?, Victor G. Devinatz

Faculty Publications – Management

The book reviewed in this essay adopts the position that the UAW, and its long-time leader Waiter Reuther, were among the main progenitors of a distinctly American version of social democracy, if not indeed its sole architects. While not denying some of the union's significant collective bargaining victories, obtained from some of the world's largest and most powerful auto manufacturers, combined with its commitment to developing a social democratic polity in the United States, I maintain that Reuther and the UAW also must be evaluated on other criteria such as the internal regime consciously constructed in pursuit of the union's …

Immigrants As The Enemy: Psychoanalysis And The Balkans' Self-Orientalization, Dušan I. Bjelić Phd Jul 2009

Immigrants As The Enemy: Psychoanalysis And The Balkans' Self-Orientalization, Dušan I. Bjelić Phd

Department of Criminology

Maria Todorova claims that Edward Said's orientalism differs from balkanism since the Balkans were never colonized in the traditional (political and economic) sense. Yet the colonial politics of representation and colonial psychology have been fully operational there. This article interprets the work of two world-renowned psychoanalysts from the Balkans, Julia Kristeva and Slavoj Zizek, as part of a continuum of centre-to-periphery representation predicated upon the West/East geopolitical split. Their respective work thus becomes relevant not only to Said's orientalism but, more specifically, to Todorova's concept of balkanism, as elucidated in her seminal work, Imagining the Balkans.

History, Generations, And China Stories, Robert A. Kapp Jul 2009

History, Generations, And China Stories, Robert A. Kapp

China Beat Blog: Archive 2008-2012

In early May, a conference was held at Yale for retiring Chinese historian Jonathan Spence, with several China Beatniks in attendance. Here, Robert Kapp, one of Jonathan Spence’s first graduate students, reflects on the shifts in the stories we’ve told and heard about China during the time that Spence has been active in the field.

The retirement of a distinguished scholar and doctoral mentor sometimes goes insufficiently remarked, but in the case of Jonathan Spence’s recent retirement from the Yale History faculty, something better happened. Happily, several of Spence’s Ph.D. students decided to throw their efforts into a conference and …

Economic Analysis Of Sodsaver Provision Of The 2008 Farm Bill For South Dakota, Larry Janssen, Yonas Hamda Jul 2009

Economic Analysis Of Sodsaver Provision Of The 2008 Farm Bill For South Dakota, Larry Janssen, Yonas Hamda

Economics Staff Paper Series (1969 - 2017)

The "Sodsaver" provision, which is a part of the 2008 Federal farm bill, is designed to lessen the conversion of native grass into cropland by limiting federal farm program payments on these converted acres within the Prairie Pothole National Priority Area (PPNPA) in the Northern Plains. Governors of five states in the PPNPA, including South Dakota, were required to make the decision to adopt or not adopt the "Sodsaver" provision. This report includes information on: 1) South Dakota's experience with conversion of rangeland into cropland, 2) estimates of native grassland acres in the PPNPA of South Dakota, 3) potential change …

Ageism In Academic Librarianship, Melanie Chu Jul 2009

Ageism In Academic Librarianship, Melanie Chu

E-JASL: Electronic Journal of Academic and Special Librarianship (1999-2009, Volumes 1-10)

Background

Nearly one out of every ten librarians is under the age of thirty. The average age of a graduate student in library and information science is 30-35 years old. Between 2010-2020, 45% of librarians will reach the retirement age of 65 years old. The relative age of the profession will continue to decrease as retirements increase. Statistically, the population of young librarians is a growing minority.

Young, new librarians face age discrimination, including disrespectful treatment in the workplace and unrealistic expectations of performance. Ageism in academic libraries results in job dissatisfaction and loss of retention for these new librarians. …

Overhauling Of A Science Library Web Area, Daniel S. Dotson

E-JASL: Electronic Journal of Academic and Special Librarianship (1999-2009, Volumes 1-10)

Abstract

This article covers the revamp of a science library’s web area. The library’s web area contained outdated web pages, unused files, and an architecture that made it hard to maintain. All of these issues with the web area resulted in an examination and revamping of several aspects of all the files on the web area. Server statistics were used to determine the usage of the files in the library’s web area. Files containing textual information were categorized according to their topic and the usage of each topic area was examined to determine the distribution of usage amongst the topic …

E-JASL: Electronic Journal of Academic and Special Librarianship (1999-2009, Volumes 1-10)

Introduction

The development of information technologies (IT) supports significant transformations in the conventional working mechanisms of the Turkish State and affiliated public institutions.

E-State is defined by World Bank as the reformulation of the relations between citizens, businesses and State authorities through use of information technologies (such as Wide Area Networks, Internet, and mobile communication) by public administrative units.

Whereas important steps have been taken in e-State practices within the framework of the infrastructure of the institutional and national information networks, Turkey is still at the starting point with regards to meeting the information and communication technology-based needs of its …

Embedding An Im [Instant Messaging] Widget In Research Databases: Helping Users At Their Point-Of-Need, Kwabena Sekyere

E-JASL: Electronic Journal of Academic and Special Librarianship (1999-2009, Volumes 1-10)

Introduction

The rapid growth of internet users has made libraries eager to introduce online services for this new community, in addition to their traditional reference services. Virtual reference service has become a convenient and easily accessible option for the online community, particularly with increasing amounts of libraries resources now available electronically as well (Lou, 2007).

Virtual reference began in many libraries as email reference service (Janes, 2002) with a move to live chat reference as technology advanced. These live reference services were offered through chat software developed in-house or by vendors. Due to the high cost of purchasing and maintaining …

Open House In The Ivory Tower: Public Programming At An Academic Library, Rochelle Smith, Ben Hunter

E-JASL: Electronic Journal of Academic and Special Librarianship (1999-2009, Volumes 1-10)

Abstract

Public programming, a frequently used outreach tool for public libraries, is far less common in academic libraries. This article examines the University of Idaho Library’s efforts to attract both university and community members with public programming, delving into detail for three specific grant-funded discussion series: one on Jewish literature, one on graphic novels, and one on jazz. Strategies for location selection, advertising, scheduling and funding are all discussed with commentary on what worked well, what didn’t, and how public programming fits into the mission of an academic library.

Using A Permanent Usability Team To Advance User-Centered Design In Libraries, Jane Nichols, Alison M. Bobal, Susan Mcevoy

E-JASL: Electronic Journal of Academic and Special Librarianship (1999-2009, Volumes 1-10)

Abstract

Usability, user studies, and evaluating user experiences have been a part of academic libraries for many years. In the last 20 years libraries have created ad hoc usability teams to do user studies. Oregon State University (OSU) Libraries started its ongoing team in 2006, resulting in an increased focus on user experience throughout the libraries. This article explores the team’s history from formation to work it took on. The merits and challenges usability teams bring to an organization are also discussed. To date the literature describes usability methods and shares findings from libraries’ usability studies but none discusses benefits …

If You Build It, They May Not Come: The Case Of Questionpoint, Lynette Ralph

E-JASL: Electronic Journal of Academic and Special Librarianship (1999-2009, Volumes 1-10)

Abstract

The Knowledge Base (KB) of QuestionPoint (QP) is a Knowledge Management (KM) tool capable of capturing the collective knowledge of reference librarians for future use. The goal of the study was to determine if this KB is an effective KM tool. Descriptive research was the methodology used and included an unobtrusive study, a survey instrument, and interviews. This study revealed that despite the technological capabilities of this KB, librarians who had access to the system failed to utilize it.
