Positive Country Images, Trust And Public Support For European Integration, Gaspare Genna
Positive Country Images, Trust And Public Support For European Integration, Gaspare Genna
Selected Works Temporary Series
In this paper I contribute to the scholarship on public support for European integration by arguing that member-states’ positive images influence individuals’ support decisions. An attribute of this positive image is trust, which individuals utilize given the complexity of the integration process, the salient impact it has on their lives and the low levels of information individuals possess. The use of a member-state’s image is therefore a short-cut to evaluate integration’s impact on individuals. As the development of integration is strongly influenced by the relatively more economically powerful member-state, trust in Germany increases the level of support, more so than …

On 1st July 2009 at [International demining organisation] BAC Task CBU-681, a detonation of a US M series submunition occurred while [the Victim] an [International demining organisation] Searcher ID No. LS 444 was conducting subsurface search and excavating the signals. [The Victim] sustained injuries in his left arm, little finger.
Based on all available evidence, the BOI team concludes that the immediate response to the accident by the team leader and the treatment by the medic enabled an effective casevac and subsequent medevac from the task to Najdeh hospital in Nabatiyeh. Supervised by both the TFM and Site Supervisor.

Fallow Bucks Get Hoarse: Vocal Fatigue As A Possible Signal To Conspecifics, Elisabetta Vannoni, Alan G. Mcelligott
Veterinary Science and Medicine Collection
Many studies of sexually selected vocal communication assume that calls remain stable throughout the breeding season. However, during this period, physiological and social factors change and these can have strong effects on the structure of calls and calling rates. During the rut, fallow bucks, Dama dama, reduce their feeding and increase the time and energy spent on vocalizing and fighting to gain matings, and consequently their body condition declines greatly. The availability of matings and intensity of competition between males also change. Therefore, we predicted that male vocal signalling would vary over time in response to the changing intersexual and …

Housing and Confinement of Farm Animals Collection
Housing conditions for dairy cows are thought to af-fect lameness, but almost no experimental work has addressed this link. The aim was to assess the effect of one feature of free-stall design, the position of the neck rail, testing the prediction that cows will be more likely to become lame if using pens with the neck rail positioned such that it prevents standing fully inside the stall. Cows (n = 32) were housed in 8 pens. Treat-ments were tested using a crossover design; treatments were allocated alternately to pens at the beginning of the experiment and switched halfway through the …

The Great Macroeconomic Experiment: Assessing The Effects Of Fiscal Stimulus Spending On Employment Growth, Robert Baumann, Bryan Engelhardt, Victor Matheson
Economics Department Working Papers
As the economics profession is split over the expected impact of the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act of 2009, we analyze the effects as if it were an experiment. Specifically, we analyze the effects of spending on employment using a difference-in-difference approach by state. To date, we find spending has had no significant effect on employment.

Summer may not be the best time to write about impact and influence. If you're heading for a long weekend at the Oregon coast (or at "the lake," for those of you on the eastern side of the state), I won't hold it against you if this issue of the Alki doesn't make it into your beach bag. Or it may be the perfect time to consider your influence on others and their impact on you. A good friend (and long-time high school librarian) once told me that "learners reflect." The phrase has stuck with me. Consider these articles to …

United States Institute Of Peace Teaches International Security Personnel To Resolve Conflicts Without Resorting To The Use Of Force, Mary H. Schwoebel
Conflict Resolution Studies Faculty Articles
Over the past decade, the United States Institute of Peace (USIP) has trained members of police and military forces around the world to prepare them to participate in international peacekeeping operations or to contribute to post-conflict stabilization and rule of law interventions in their own or in other war-torn countries. Most of the training takes place outside the United States, from remote, rugged bases to centrally located schools and academies, from Senegal to Nepal, from Italy to the Philippines. Training Programs for International Security Personnel Today's crisis, conflict, and post-conflict contexts are characterized by complexity, multiple parties, blurred boundaries, blurred …

Electoral Cycles In Ontario Municipalities: Does Election Proximity Make Local Politicians More Competitive?, Mathew Daley
Electoral Cycles In Ontario Municipalities: Does Election Proximity Make Local Politicians More Competitive?, Mathew Daley
MPA Major Research Papers
This paper examines whether an electoral cycle is present in Ontario municipal governments and whether the proximity of an election causes municipal councillors to become more competitive. An analysis of 18,675 municipal council votes between 2003 and 2006 was conducted for the following municipalities: Ottawa, Hamilton, Brampton, London, Markham, Vaughan, Windsor, and Kitchener. The findings reveal a positive correlation between time and competition in three-quarters of the observed municipal councils, indicating the presence of an electoral cycle in Ontario.

Perirhinal Cortex Contributes To Accuracy In Recognition Memory And Perceptual Discriminations., Edward B O'Neil, Anthony D Cate, Stefan Köhler
Brain and Mind Institute Researchers' Publications
The prevailing view of the medial temporal lobe (MTL) holds that its structures are dedicated to long-term declarative memory. Recent evidence challenges this position, suggesting that perirhinal cortex (PRc) in the MTL may also play a role in perceptual discriminations of stimuli with substantial visual feature overlap. Relevant neuropsychological findings in humans have been inconclusive, likely because studies have relied on patients with large and variable MTL lesions. Here, we conducted a functional magnetic resonance imaging study in healthy individuals to determine whether PRc shows a performance-related involvement in perceptual oddball judgments that is comparable to its established role in …

Institutional Repository Information
FY 2009 was the 4th year of operations for the UNL Digital Commons, which again established new records for recruitment, participation, and usage.
During the year, the repository grew from being the 4th largest in the United States to the 2nd largest, overtaking MIT’s DSpace and Ohio State’s KnowledgeBank repositories. Nebraska now trails only Michigan’s Deep Blue in number of documents in a traditionally configured institutional repository.
8,393 new open access articles were deposited, an increase of 1,275 (18%) over the previous year. At June 30, 2009, the repository held 23,885 open-access documents, plus 10,965 ETDs in the ProQuest database, …
