A Pilot Study Of Bibliotherapy To Reduce Alcohol Problems Among Patients In A Hospital Trauma Center, Paul Amrhein, Timothy Apodaca, William R. Miller, Carol R. Schermer Jul 2009

A Pilot Study Of Bibliotherapy To Reduce Alcohol Problems Among Patients In A Hospital Trauma Center, Paul Amrhein, Timothy Apodaca, William R. Miller, Carol R. Schermer

Department of Psychology Faculty Scholarship and Creative Works

Because alcohol use plays a major role in many injuries that require hospital care, there is increasing interest in developing interventions to address alcohol problems among emergency department and trauma center patients. The aim of the current study was to extend past research on brief interventions by investigating the use of a self-help manual to treat problem drinkers in a hospital trauma center. Forty injured patients who were either intoxicated at the time of injury or screened positive for harmful drinking were randomly assigned to receive either a brief assessment and a self-help booklet with no more than 5 minutes …

Turnkey Student Training: Transforming Communication And Content With A Wiki, Hilary Kraus, Missy Roser Jul 2009

Turnkey Student Training: Transforming Communication And Content With A Wiki, Hilary Kraus, Missy Roser

Library Staff Publications

The DePaul University Library's Reference Department began developing a wiki for student training and support in 2006. More than an online "reference binder," it was a sea change in how we communicated with our students and each other. It enabled us to:

  • Provide consistent training with reproducible results
  • Have materials accessible anywhere, anytime
  • Enable any team member to contribute to the process
  • Update our documents in seconds and not have to print new copies

The wiki transformed student training and laid the groundwork for adoption of a librarywide intranet.

This poster session featured background information on the wiki, challenges and …

The Indian Dream, Ishrat Husain Dr. Jul 2009

The Indian Dream, Ishrat Husain Dr.

Faculty Research - Newspaper and Magazine Articles

During a recent visit to Mumbai and New Delhi I attended two major conferences on India’s economy. A report, commissioned by the Asian Development Bank, India 2039: An affluent society in one generation, formed the basis of the Mumbai discussion. The focus of the report was on how India would be able to make the transition from a low-income country to an affluent society within a generation if it was able to maintain and accelerate an annual average growth rate of 9.5 per cent over the next 30 years. According to the report’s projections the Indian economy would increase by …

Characteristics Of Contemporary Gag Order Requests In Media Law Reporter Volumes 19 Through 33, Brad Leavitt Clark

Theses and Dissertations

The conflict between the First Amendment and the Sixth Amendment is not new nor is it easily decipherable. Both amendments appear to have absolute priority, yet they appear to conflict (Erickson, 1977). The First Amendment declares unequivocally, "Congress shall make no law...abridging the freedom of speech, or of the press[,]" while the Sixth Amendment states with equal force, "In all criminal prosecutions, the accused shall enjoy the right to a speedy public trial, by an impartial jury of the state and district wherein the crime shall have been committed..." (U.S. Constitution, Amendment I, Amendment VI). Free speech and an unrestricted …

Fabulous Finals At Wimbledon, Richard C. Crepeau Jul 2009

Fabulous Finals At Wimbledon, Richard C. Crepeau

On Sport and Society

It’s been a week now since the finals were played at Wimbledon. On the women’s side the Williams sisters once again demonstrated to their opponents just how difficult it will be to win a tournament during which both of them are playing their normal game. On the men’s side Roger Federer entered the history books by winning his 15th Grand Slam event. As always Wimbledon offered a level of play that was memorable, and laid down new bench marks for high quality play and then reset the argumentative territory for the title “best Wimbledon match of all-time,” or at the …

Securing An Effective Voice For Citizens In Intergovernmental Administrative Decision Making, Maria J. D'Agostino Jul 2009

Securing An Effective Voice For Citizens In Intergovernmental Administrative Decision Making, Maria J. D'Agostino

Publications and Research

Intergovernmental administrative arrangements, often obscured from public view, are responsible for public decisions and their consequences. After European Union citizens expressed dissatisfaction with the disconnected administrative decision-making process by rejecting the European Constitution, the European Commission called for a period of reflection to develop tools and processes in order to involve citizens in the decision-making process.

This article examines collaborative efforts by the European Union to involve citizens in the shaping of national priorities. In-depth interviews were conducted with the heads of nonprofit organizations and staffers at nonprofits involved with organizing the European Citizens’ Consultations (ECC). All the organizations are …

Approaching Autism: A Qualitative Review Of Maternal And Familial Adaptation Among Families Of Children With Autism, Stephanie A. Williamson Jul 2009

Approaching Autism: A Qualitative Review Of Maternal And Familial Adaptation Among Families Of Children With Autism, Stephanie A. Williamson

Theses and Dissertations

The purpose of this study is to serve as an exploration of family experiences in relation to a child's autism diagnosis. Specifically, it focuses on family adaptation as explained by McCubbin, et al.'s Double ABCX Model (1983). Given that mothers play a crucial role in the family system and are often the primary caregivers for children with disabilities, maternal adaptation is also investigated. This study employs qualitative methods, including in-depth personal and group interviews. Mothers shared their perceptions and experiences surrounding children's autism diagnoses, including initial recognition of atypical behavior and development, the formal diagnosis process, and subsequent transitions within …

An Examination Of Print Placements: 1995-2008, Lois Elenore Francis

Theses and Dissertations

A relatively unexamined area of branded entertainment combines sports sponsorship with product placement, and occurs when a brand name or logo appears in a print photograph. The resulting photograph can be considered the print equivalent of product placement, or "print placement." Keenan, Pokrywczynski and Boyle (1995) determined the potential for exposure to advertising, brands, sponsors and symbols appearing in photographs in Sports Illustrated magazine. This thesis updates and expands the research on print placements through a content analysis of Sports Illustrated from 1995 through 2008. Results showed an increase over time in the number of print placements, and representation of …

The agent provocateur was Niall Ferguson of Harvard. China and the U.S., he argued, used to have a symbiotic relationship and formed a tightly integrated unit that he calls Chimerica… During the first few years of the 21st century, Chimerica worked great. National Health Reform: How Will Medically Underserved Communities Fare?, Sara J. Rosenbaum, Emily Jones, Peter Shin, Leighton C. Ku

Geiger Gibson/RCHN Community Health Foundation Research Collaborative

This brief examines the factors underlying medical underservice. It finds that the number of Americans living in communities at risk for medical underservice is more than double the number of persons who are uninsured. The report notes that even with health insurance reform, these communities and providers that serve them will continue to be affected by elevated numbers of low income uninsured persons, as well as persons who may be seriously under-insured because of poorer health status and lower family income.

Describing health insurance expansion as the single most important strategy to alleviate medical underservice, the Brief also identifies a …

Creating An Expected Profile For Affinity 2.5 From A Sample Of Non-Pedophilic, Exclusively Heterosexual, College Age Males, R. D. C. Boardman Jul 2009

Creating An Expected Profile For Affinity 2.5 From A Sample Of Non-Pedophilic, Exclusively Heterosexual, College Age Males, R. D. C. Boardman

Theses and Dissertations

The Affinity 2.0 has been recently upgraded to the Affinity 2.5. Both instruments purport to measure sexual interest using viewing time as a form of measurement using non-pornographic images of people of varying ages and genders. The Affinity 2.5 increased the number of slides by 42.9%. This increase may have impacted the expected Chi square weights established for the Affinity 2.0 for non-pedophilic, exclusively heterosexual males. The purpose of this study was to create new expected Chi square weights for the Affinity 2.5 for non-pedophilic, exclusively heterosexual males. Additionally, this study re-examined the temporal stability of the Affinity 2.0 using …

Second Thoughts: Who Almost Participates In An Ida?, David Rothwell, Chang-Keun Han Jul 2009

Second Thoughts: Who Almost Participates In An Ida?, David Rothwell, Chang-Keun Han

Center for Social Development Research

Self-selection into social intervention programs may bias the estimates of treatment impact. Data from an Individual Development Account (IDA) program (N = 758) are used to examine the self-selection process. Persons who applied but did not enroll are assumed to have had “second thoughts” about program participation. Multivariate logistic regression predicted second thoughts and showed that having children in the household and negative net worth, along with not owning a vehicle, were positively related to having second thoughts. Those saving for an education were more likely than those saving for a home or business to have second thoughts. Implications for …

Building Community And Bridging Cultures: The Role Of Volunteer Tutors In Oregon’S Latino Serving Community-Based Organizations, Troy Vaughn Hickman Jul 2009

Building Community And Bridging Cultures: The Role Of Volunteer Tutors In Oregon’S Latino Serving Community-Based Organizations, Troy Vaughn Hickman

Dissertations and Theses

Literature for and about successful volunteer literacy programs highlight and advocate for practices that inform administrators and trainers of the needs and expectations of volunteer tutors. Applications of this knowledge can affect the type of policies that administrators implement in their programs and the type of support that they provide for their tutors. This project was an opportunity for the researcher to reflect on his experiences as a consultant and trainer with community-based programs and to increase his understanding of the volunteers in order to assist in future administration and training work.

Community-based volunteer literacy programs across Oregon are unique …

Rocket Science Can Be Understood: Librarians As Stem Faculty Outreach Partners, Melanie Sellar, Jeanine Marie Scaramozzino

Library Scholarship

Librarians can play an active role in faculty research and enhancing public understanding of science. Now more than ever before, the nation’s scientists are engaging in outreach activities focused on the pre-college pipeline in order to ensure that a continuing supply of students enter college-level science disciplines and education programs, and ensure that schools graduate an informed citizenry appreciative of the sciences. Increased participation in these types of activities can be attributed in large part to funding agencies such as the National Science Foundation (NSF) and other STEM (science, technology, engineering and mathematics) focused grant programs, which now require that …

Asset Building Among Native Hawaiians: Lessons From The Kahikū Ida Program, David Rothwell Jul 2009

Asset Building Among Native Hawaiians: Lessons From The Kahikū Ida Program, David Rothwell

Center for Social Development Research

Individual Development Accounts (IDAs) are matched savings accounts that encourage asset development for individuals and families with low incomes. Unique program data from an IDA program serving 758 Native Hawaiians were used to model the probability of participating in and graduating from the IDA program. Multivariate logistic regression models show that children in the household, lack of vehicle ownership, and savings goal (education) were associated with a reduced likelihood of program participation. Participants who owned homes and had relatively high savings balances prior to starting the program were more likely to graduate. Additionally, Maui participants were more than three times …
