Margin Requirement Impacts On Live Cattle Futures Hedges, Yi Liu, Darrell R. Mark Jul 2009

Margin Requirement Impacts On Live Cattle Futures Hedges, Yi Liu, Darrell R. Mark

Cornhusker Economics

All buyers and sellers of futures contracts have to post margin money through their brokers to act as a performance bond. This margin money financially secures their position and protects the party on the opposite side of the transaction from default. Generally, the margin requirement for a futures contract is established at a level close to the maximum amount that any short or long trader could lose in any one-day trading period because each day the account is “marked-to-the-market” and the daily gain or loss is reflected in the account balance at the end of the day. The maximum amount …

Autonomy-Dependency Paradox In Organization-Public Relationships: A Case Study Analysis Of A University Art Museum, Christopher E. Wilson Jul 2009

Autonomy-Dependency Paradox In Organization-Public Relationships: A Case Study Analysis Of A University Art Museum, Christopher E. Wilson

Theses and Dissertations

This study presents an exploration of the autonomy-dependence paradox inherent in organization-public relationships that is informed by paradox theory, structuration theory and scholarly and philosophical literature on authenticity. These theories suggest that relationships between organizations and their publics are defined by interdependence, or the centripetal and centrifugal forces of autonomy and dependence that cause tensions that can influence the decision making of the relational partners. They also suggest that organizations must use their agency, their knowledge of relational structures, and their understanding of their authentic selves to manage their own behavior and communication rather than that of their publics. The …

Commitment In Marriage: An Influence For Moral Growth, Shelly Evans Powell Jul 2009

Commitment In Marriage: An Influence For Moral Growth, Shelly Evans Powell

Theses and Dissertations

Marriage continues to be one of the most important relationships to today's Americans (Fowers, 2000), generating numerous studies on the physical, emotional, mental and financial outcomes of marriage (Waite & Gallagher, 2000). Yet, little research has been done to explore the moral outcomes of marriage. Examining how marriage may contribute to individual spouses' moral development is compatible with recent studies on marital virtues that aim to provide a more complete as well as less individualistic view of marriage (Hawkins, Fowers, Carroll, & Yang, 2007). This study adopts a moral personality approach to examine marriage's role in adult moral development. Taking …

Portrayal Of Older People In Disney Live Action Films From The 1990s And 2000s, Jennifer Gail Martin Jul 2009

Portrayal Of Older People In Disney Live Action Films From The 1990s And 2000s, Jennifer Gail Martin

Theses and Dissertations

Children as young as three years old are scared of the idea of growing old, and negative stereotypes about older people have started to develop by the time children enter elementary school. Negative stereotyping of older characters has been found to be prevalent in all forms of media. Because children use media to figure out who they are and what the world is like, this study looks at some of the most popular films of the past two decades aimed toward children. This study is a content analysis of older major and minor characters from the 60 top grossing Disney …

Students' Perceptions And Experiences Of Secondary Public School Safety, Suzanne E. Jacobson Jul 2009

Students' Perceptions And Experiences Of Secondary Public School Safety, Suzanne E. Jacobson

Theses and Dissertations

The purpose of this study was to generate in-depth understanding and descriptions of secondary students' experiences of safety in the public schools. Quantitative research has demonstrated that students self-report feeling unsafe in school (Utah State University: Center for the School of the Future, 2006). School violence is decreasing, yet many school districts have sponsored and implemented heightened security measures. It seems a contradiction, but amidst heightened security secondary public school students self-report feeling unsafe in school. This study investigated this phenomenon to provide rich and detailed data, utilizing a grounded theory approach to qualitative research and design. The perceptions and …

Subdivided By Faith? An Historical Account Of Evangelicals And The City, Mark T. Mulder, James K.A. Smith Jul 2009

Subdivided By Faith? An Historical Account Of Evangelicals And The City, Mark T. Mulder, James K.A. Smith

University Faculty Publications and Creative Works

In an echo of Michael Emerson and Christian Smith’s study of evangelicals and the racialized society (detailed vividly in Divided by Faith), Mark T. Mulder and James K. A. Smith attempt to trace the history and literature concerning evangelicals and their relationship to the city. While there exists an interesting literature about general urban antipathy in the U.S., the authors contend religion remains a salient and under-examined component within that phenomenon. This paper calls for more theologically-nuanced studies regarding evangelicals, anti-urban bias, and geographical habits. Mr. Mulder is Assistant Professor of Sociology and Mr. Smith is Associate Professor of Philosophy …

The Xinjiang Riots: Tried Paradigms, Fresh Tensions, James Leibold Jul 2009

The Xinjiang Riots: Tried Paradigms, Fresh Tensions, James Leibold

China Beat Blog: Archive 2008-2012

The mainstream media, both Western and Chinese, seem to be struggling to make sense of the deadly riots that broke out in the Xinjiang capital of Urumqi last week. Well-worn explanations on both sides have largely failed to grasp the complexities behind this new, unprecedented wave of mass communal violence in China. Not since the dying days of the Manchu Qing empire has China witnessed this sort of spontaneous ethnically-based violence.

With initial headlines like “Chinese riot police, Muslims clash in northwestern city,” “China in deadly crackdown after Uighurs go on the rampage,” and “Uighurs cling to life in People’s …

City Management Theory And Practice: A Foundation For Educating The Next Generation Of Local Government Administrators, Scott Douglas Lazenby Jul 2009

City Management Theory And Practice: A Foundation For Educating The Next Generation Of Local Government Administrators, Scott Douglas Lazenby

Dissertations and Theses

Due to the retirement of the baby boom generation, many individuals, in a relatively short period of time, will need to be trained and educated to step into local government senior leadership positions. Ideally, the education and training of this new leadership cadre should be guided by a well known and proven body of theory that helps us understand the competencies the next generation of public service need to possess in order to be effective in their work. The purpose of this research is to assess whether such a body of work exists and, if so, whether it is successfully …

Teacher Perspectives On Behaviors Exhibited By Students At Risk For Ebd And The Implications Of These Behaviors For The Development Of An Ebd Screener In Middle And Junior High Schools, Brittany Linn Schilling Jul 2009

Teacher Perspectives On Behaviors Exhibited By Students At Risk For Ebd And The Implications Of These Behaviors For The Development Of An Ebd Screener In Middle And Junior High Schools, Brittany Linn Schilling

Theses and Dissertations

Universal screening is an emerging practice in the field of education to provide at-risk students with early intervention services. Currently there is not a universal screener specifically designed for the middle school population. Therefore, the purpose of this study was to obtain junior high and middle school teachers' perspectives on behaviors exhibited by students at risk for emotional and behavioral disorders in order to develop preliminary test items. Several themes were identified from the teachers' perspectives. Teacher perspectives noted that at-risk students displayed a variety of internalizing and externalizing behaviors. These issues included difficulty maintaining peer and teacher relationships, difficulty …

The Relationship Between Severity Of Childhood Sexual Abuse And Adult Perceptions Of Intimacy With Internalized Shame As A Mediator, Sarah Williamson Jul 2009

The Relationship Between Severity Of Childhood Sexual Abuse And Adult Perceptions Of Intimacy With Internalized Shame As A Mediator, Sarah Williamson

Theses and Dissertations

A community sample of adult women (N = 581) were surveyed to determine whether internalized shame mediated the relationship between severity of childhood sexual abuse and adult perceptions of intimacy in couple relationships. Characteristics of abuse, duration of abuse, frequency of abuse, age when the abuse began, and physical force used during the abuse were used to determine severity of abuse. It was predicted that 1) women sexually abused as children (N = 318) and non-abused women (N = 263) would significantly differ in their levels of internalized shame and their perceptions of intimacy; 2) severity of abuse would be …

Open Forum: The Future Of Library Systems, Maria Collins, Andrée J. Rathemacher

Technical Services Faculty Publications

Moderated by Maria Collins of North Carolina State University, discussion at this open forum on the future of library systems touched on open-source library systems, cloud computing, new initiatives by the Open Library Environment (OLE) Project and OCLC, and desired characteristics of future integrated library systems. Most participants had limited experience with next-generation library systems and attended the open forum with the desire to broaden their understanding, although some were exposed to or had worked with the open-source discovery tool VuFind, the OLE Project, WorldCat Local, and the OCLC Web-scale service. A strong desire to customize library systems to meet …

Negative Marital Interaction And Positive Child Outcomes With Parent/Child Attachment As A Moderating Variable, Chelsea A. Bennett Jul 2009

Negative Marital Interaction And Positive Child Outcomes With Parent/Child Attachment As A Moderating Variable, Chelsea A. Bennett

Theses and Dissertations

This longitudinal study investigated the potential moderating effects of attachment on negative marital interaction and positive child outcomes, specifically school engagement and child self-regulation. Waves I and II of data were drawn from the Flourishing Families Project; participants were 296 two parent families (fathers, mothers and children ages 10-13). Both observational and questionnaire data were used in data collection. Negative marital interaction was assessed using observational codes from the Iowa Family Interaction Rating Scales. All three family members' perceptions were used in assessing parent/child attachment and the potential positive child outcomes of school engagement and child self-regulation. As negative marital …

Qualitative Research Is Consonant With The Espoused Values Of Occupational Therapy: A Review Of Qualitative Research In Occupational Therapy, Kathleen M. Denault Jul 2009

Qualitative Research Is Consonant With The Espoused Values Of Occupational Therapy: A Review Of Qualitative Research In Occupational Therapy, Kathleen M. Denault

The Qualitative Report

In her 2001 edited text, Qualitative Research in Occupational Therapy: Strategies and Experiences, Joanne Valiant Cook presents an approachable and informative introduction to qualitative research for occupational therapists. As the discipline of occupational therapy continues to develop its own base of knowledge, the need for research methods which capture the complexity of occupation has become evident. Through considering the similarity between the founding principles of occupational therapy and the world-view of qualitative research, Cook presents a theoretically-oriented research guide specific to the domain of concern of occupational therapy. Examples of qualitative studies and reflections of occupational therapy researchers will be …

Spatio-Temporal Cluster Analysis Of County-Based Human West Nile Virus Incidence In The Continental United States, Ramanathan Sugumaran, Scott R. Larson, John P. Degroote Jul 2009

Spatio-Temporal Cluster Analysis Of County-Based Human West Nile Virus Incidence In The Continental United States, Ramanathan Sugumaran, Scott R. Larson, John P. Degroote

Faculty Work

Background: West Nile virus (WNV) is a vector-borne illness that can severely affect human health. After introduction on the East Coast in 1999, the virus quickly spread and became established across the continental United States. However, there have been significant variations in levels of human WNV incidence spatially and temporally. In order to quantify these variations, we used Kulldorff's spatial scan statistic and Anselin's Local Moran's I statistic to uncover spatial clustering of human WNV incidence at the county level in the continental United States from 2002– 2008. These two methods were applied with varying analysis thresholds in order …
