This collection contains copy read on the air by newscasters at WSAZ-TV, the local NBC affiliate in Huntington, West Virginia on Nov. 22 and 23, 1963, during coverage of the assassination of President John F. Kennedy. The bulletins are based on Associated Press news reports. Also included are two wire photographs of Lee Harvey Oswald being shot and John F. Kennedy Jr. at the funeral of John F. Kennedy.

Determinants Of Share Price Movements In Emerging Equity Markets: Some Evidence From America's Past, Peter Z. Grossman

Emerging equity markets are plagued by poor information, which is a barrier to outside shareholder participation. This paper examines the determinants of share prices of two United States companies over a 14-year period during the late 19th century, when America had an emerging equity market. These two companies withheld all information on profits and assets until the end of the period, yet traded regularly. Overall, the evidence suggests that outside investors received sufficient compensation for their ignorance, and that these outsiders set the market price. From late 1945 through the middle of 1946, Hungary experienced the most gigantic inflation of modern history. But in August 1946, the astronomical price increases stopped, and lasting price stability followed. Indeed, the contrast is so dramatic that it is viewed by some as an economic miracle surpassing even the post-war German Wirschaftswunder.

With the closure of the Shreveport Clinic in 1923, the United States entered a 40-year period during which legal opiate maintenance was limited to a small number of registered medical addicts, most of them cancer patients. Addicts were demonized, hounded by law enforcement personnel, and rarely treated outside of jails. Abstinence was the only legitimate goal of treatment. Quite correctly, historians regard the period between the mid-1920s and the mid-1960s as the Dark Ages of American drug policy. Even so, there was resistance to such therapeutic orthodoxy, notably on the West Coast. Indeed, the Los Angeles County Medical Association sponsored …

In his recounting of the suburban migration from America's cities, journalist and broadcaster Ray Suarez laments the loss of the "old neighborhood". He extols its virtues while explaining its decline. Suarez's nostalgic examples recall the virtues of the extended family kinship, neighborliness, and other features of the "urban village." These are often associated with those urban neighborhoods populated by recent immigratns. These urban villages were thought to have peaked in the decades between the American Civil War and the onset of the First World War, when many U.S. cities industrialized and grew very rapidly. Despite the dismal record cities have compiled of late in defending their race-conscious contracting programs, this article seeks "to dispel the notion that strict scrutiny is 'strict in theory but fatal in fact.'" If a local government follows the course outlined above, and combines the ability to monitor and analyze all relevant contracting data with the enactment and implementation of a multi-faceted race-neutral program, it has laid a sound foundation for the subsequent enactment of race-conscious remedies that are narrowly-tailored to address statistically valid disparities in utilization of specific categories of MBEs that remain after the race-neutral program has been …

The need for a high school leadership curriculum for a small rural school district was studied. The review of literature showed that students should be provided the opportunity to learn leadership skills that focus on the individual, family, school and community. By working with peers and adults, leadership students will have the opportunity to work in real-life situations which address service-learning, character education, and school-to-work in aligmnent with the national and state standards.

A Central Washington University Recruitment Plan For Students From The Yakima Valley, Marilyn A. Thompson

The purpose of this project was to develop a recruitment plan to increase Central Washington University's enrollment of students from the Yakima Valley region in the State of Washington. To develop this plan, current research and literature related to increasing enrollment at institutions of higher education was reviewed. A survey for graduating high school seniors was developed and mailed to high schools in the Yakima Valley region and the information used in the development of the recruitment plan. The plan will be offered to Central Washington University's Advancement and Marketing Division for use in planning future marketing campaigns

As members of the Service Learning collective in the Writing Program at Syracuse University, we have been actively designing and teaching a sequence of undergraduate writing courses that integrate community service in various ways -by asking students to write about the nonprofit agencies where they participate, to write for those sites by producing brochures and websites, and to write with people as tutors in adult literacy programs or in local urban high schools. ¹

This paper proposes methods to study the impact of service-learning on the writing performance cf native and non-native English speaking students in first-year college composition. Linguistic and rhetorical features commonly identified as affecting judgments of writing quality will be compared to holistic essay and portfolio ratings to describe the impact of different teaching and learning contexts on writing performance. The implications of the study will be of particular interest to L1 and L2 university composition instructors interested in learning more about service-learning and writing assessment.

Evaluating Experiential Teaching Methods In A Policy Practice Course: The Case For Service Learning To Increase Political Participation, Cynthia J. Rocha

This study compares the effects of experiential learning on policy-related values, competency, and activity levels of two groups of recent MSW graduates from one university. The study group received experiential service learning in the MSW program, primarily in an advanced policy course, while the comparison group did not. The author explains experiential teaching and service learning methods, as well the activities included in the policy course. Results indicate that both groups placed a high value on political skills. However, the experiential group was significantly more likely to perceive themselves as competent policy practitioners and to perform policy-related activities after graduation.

Creating Sustainable Service Learning Programs: Lessons Learned From The Horizons Project, 1997-2000, Gail Robinson

In 1997, the American Association of Community Colleges began a three-year grant project to increase the number, quality, and sustainability of service learning programs in community colleges nationwide. Fourteen colleges—selected in a national competition for grants ranging from $4,000 to $10,000 per year— worked together in AACC’s project, Community Colleges Broadening Horizons through Service Learning, to overcome challenges and learn valuable lessons in developing and sustaining academically based service learning programs.

Issues Involved In Faculty Implementation Of Community Service-Learning In Teacher Education, Rahima C. Wade, Eric Vanden Berk, Stephanie K. Siddens

This study examined how teacher education faculty from 21 institutions attempted to implement the curricular innovation of community service-learning. Faculty's biggest successes were implementation of program/course changes, increased collaborations on campus or in the community, and perceived positive impact on pre-service teachers. Barriers to implementation included time, resistance, or inertia on the part of colleagues, limited finances, and other reform efforts and commitments that demanded immediate attention. The study highlights several key factors that contributed to faculty success: faculty ownership and involvement in decision making, site-specific professional development opportunities, resources to support faculty 's efforts, and written plans for implementation.

The Voices Of Preservice Teachers On The Meaning And Value Of Their Service-Learning, Kevin J. Swick, Michael Rowls

The perspectives of preservice teacher education students about their service- learning experiences are examined in the context of Serow's conceptual scheme of competence, participation, relationships, and understanding. 240 undergraduates in education and 59 professional program interns participated in the study. Their responses to a service learning survey suggest that service learning positively influences them in relation to personal, professional, academic, and career functioning. The student "voice" on service- learning provides many insights on ways to strengthen S-L in teacher education.

Many science educators, in the US and elsewhere, support the idea that all students should have fair and equal opportunities to become scientifically literate through authentic, real problem-based science education. However, this challenge requires teachers to find ways to help all students feel comfortable with, and connected to, science. Despite the general consensus around the ideal of science for all, science teacher education programmes have had little or no impact on pre-service teachers’ philosophies of teaching and learning, especially as it relates to serving under-served populations in science. The two major goals of this study were: 1) to explore the comparative effects of service learning and community service on the cognitive and affective development of college undergraduates and 2) to enhance our understanding of how learning is enhanced by service. These questions were explored by means of a quantitative longitudinal study of a national sample of students at diverse colleges and universities and a qualitative study of students and faculty who participated in service learning at a subset of these institutions.

Service learning is an undergraduate education strategy found across four program areas funded by the W. K. Kellogg Foundation (WKKF). This cross-foundation, retrospective evaluation examines 35 projects of $100,000 or more funded between 1985-95. Study information was based on qualitative data and approaches, with the majority of project activities and results self-reported by grantees. Written surveys and review of annual progress reports submitted by grantees were augmented by follow-up telephone inquiries and e-mails. Four international projects are included in the evaluations. Most projects used approaches involving classroom learning, community service, and reflection on service within the context of coursework. The …

Sex, race, gender, sexuality, color, religion, language, nationality, ethnicity, culture, poverty - socially constructed categories, social tropes that relegate "others" to subordinated positions in the varied and various cultural and economic marketplaces of both global and local societies. Richard Delgado's transformational work engages all of these tropes insightfully, disturbingly, and illuminatingly. His rich literature conceptualizes persons as multidimensional, complex beings and exposes society as the pre-fabricated stage in which diverse interactions evolve. Delgado's epistemological stance is fluid, non-rigid, and grounded on subjectivity.

This report evaluates the measurements of information technology investments payoff, and recommends a theoretical framework for testing the costs and benefits of Internet e-commerce investments. A number of research studies are referenced to evaluate the accuracy of the traditional, quantitative-oriented measurements and introduce a few contemporary, more qualitative-oriented alternatives. As one of the major types of information technology investments, Internet e-commerce is chosen as a case to evaluate the measurements by applying the theories generated from various research studies. The ethnic studies project is a relatively new formation in post secondary institutions. As academic formations go ethnic studies has a life line extending over a little more than a generation on college and university campuses of this nation. During this brief span of time I believe we safely can assert that ethnic studies scholarship, that occurring both inside and outside the classroom, has made major contributions to the bodies of knowledge now existing about the diverse social and cultural experiences of ethnic groups.
