Utah State University began to present radio programs on a regular basis over KSL Radio in Salt Lake City in 1931. In 1952, its first television program was televised over KSL-TV. Today the University is broadcasting programs over the majority of Utah's radio and television stations.

This thesis covers the development of broadcasting from USU in three major areas: (1) radio and television programs presented over Utah broadcasting outlets, (2) the construction of radio and television stations on the campus, and (3) instruction in broadcasting. There has been no attempt made to evaluate the University's use of these media.

A single political issue, public financing of a sewage treatment facility for the city of Logan, was studied in an attempt to determine the effect of certain variables on the formation of public policy.

The case study method of research was followed, and conclusions were based on data obtained through personal interviews as well as through study of public documents.

The purpose was to determine how husbands and wives who had been separated because of the war in Vietnam perceived each other during separation. Martial roles were used as the vehicle to convey perception.

A random sample of Jl couples was selected from among the married officers and enlisted men of Marine All Weather Attack Squadron 225 which was based at DaNang, South Vietnam. A questionnaire designed to determine perception of spouse was sent to men in Vietnam and to their wives who resided in various parts of the United States.

The Metropolitan Readiness Test, 1964 edition, Form A, was administered to forty children who were enrolled in kindergarten classes in Logan, Utah, during the school year 1967-1968. Twenty of these children (nursery attenders) had attended the Utah State University Child Development Laboratory for at least two, but not more than three quarters with at least half of this nursery experience being during the year preceding kindergarten. The other 20 children (non-attenders) had not experienced any type of pre-school or day care program prior to kindergarten. The effects of maternal employment, as contrasted with maternal nonemployment, on the scholastic performance of children were studied using a sample of 80 Mount Ogden Junior High seventh grade students and their mothers. The 80 mothers concerned met the criterion for employment by having worked a forty-hour week outside the home the first six years their child attended school or the criteria of nonemployment by having never engaged in paid employment outside the home for the first six years of their child's schooling.

Except for an occasional Nat Turner, Booker T. Washington, or George W. Carver, the Negro as a person is missing from the textbooks from which the millions learn their history. The race has bulked large as a theme in American historiography, but such treatment has been largely preoccupied with Negroes en masse and as a "problem," and has rarely extended to individual, creative Negroes and their contributions to American society. It may be supposed that white, college-bred Americans can identify very few of the most celebrated Negroes who attained prominence of some sort before World War I.

Three general comparisons were made in the present study: (1) Four groups of subjects were compared with one-another on the four Bills' Index of Adjustment and Values variables. The variables included: (a) Self-concept (perception of self), (b) self-acceptance (feelings about perception of self), (c) ideal-self (aspired self), and (d) the discrepancy score between self-concept and ideal-self. Consumption and use patterns for selected dairy products and their substitutes were described and related to certain socio-economic variables for consumers living in the Salt Lake City metropolitan area. The data for this thesis were gathered by means of a survey conducted from April 1967 through June 1967.

Salt Lake City households were large consumers of fluid milk, evaporated milk, butter, margarine, fruit juice and fruitade when compared to the western region and the nation.

The collective bargaining practices among Utah's council-manager municipalities was studied through a review of existing literature and two surveys, one of which focused upon the policies and practices of Utah's fourteen municipalities governed under the council-manager system and having a population of 2,000 or more. The second survey was a microcosmic study of Ogden City's collective bargaining practices as defined by administrators and employee representatives.

The effects of learning upon the rate of conservation attainment and its transference to other areas of performance were studied using 17 mentally retarded subjects.

Subjects found to be non-conservers on pretests were taught conservation and correspondence using a variety of tasks modeled from Piaget's experiments. They were also pretested on the WISC Information and Picture Arrangement Sub-tests and a number concept test. Following the learning experiences, the subjects were posttested using the same measures used for pretesting with the exception of the number test where an alternate form was used.

The main purpose of the study was to evaluate the effectiveness of the method of teaching a "How to Study" class in helping students more adequately meet their reading needs.

Research was conducted to test the reading gains made by students in the program with respect to ability and group size. The results indicate that group size had the greatest effect as to changes in reading behavior.

This study attempted to discover some parameters in terms of mental age at which young children, ages five through eight, begin to utilize effectively their mental imagery in the learning process. Using Piaget's principles of conservation as a learning task, subjects were taught in one of two groups: Group one was instructed in conservation concepts by use of concrete example, in which case they were allowed to see, handle and manipulate materials as they underwent transformations. Group two received identical instruction but were called upon to use their mental imagery to visualize the materials undergoing transformations.

The purpose of this study was to evaluate the Wechsler Pre-School and Primary Scale of Intelligence for use in predicting school achievement. The Wechsler Pre-School and Primary Scale of Intelligence was administered to 22 children enrolled in the Operation Head Start Program in Logan, Utah. The Wide Range Achievement Test was administered five months later to the same 22 children. The scores on the Wechsler Pre-School and Primary Scale of Intelligence were correlated to the scores on the Wide Range Achievement Test.

Those used were the Educational Research Corporation Stenographic Aptitude Test and its subtests, I.Q. scores, a Self-Success Rating, and the Digit Symbol subtest taken from the Wechsler Adult Intelligence Scale.

Students enrolled in Shorthand I at Sky View High School were the subjects used in this study.

The criteria of shorthand success were the final dictation speed and the final grade.

Four non-licking guinea pigs were reinforced with water for successive approximations to licking an operandum feeder. Once all subjects had obtained their total liquid intake for a three-week period by licking, an optimum deprivation schedule was determined.

Fixed ratio and variable interval schedules were found to affect licking behavior of the guinea pig in a similar way as with the rat, mean lick rate of guinea pigs being slightly lower than that of the rat. Precise control over the onset and offset of licking was demonstrated through discrimination training.

The purpose of this study was to determine if a relationship existed between arrival time in coming to take the ACT test and academic achievement.

The individuals who met the general criteria were used in this study numbered 129; 46 of these met the additional criteria of arriving early and they composed the early group.

The early and late groups were compared on ACT composite score and cumulative grade point average.

Significant differences between the means could not be found, by analysis of variance; between the early and late groups using either ACT composite score or cumulative grade point average.

Six hundred fifty-five graduates from the 1964, 1965 and 1966 graduating classes made up the sample. The grades used were those received during their three years in high school.
