Convocation Address: "A Time To Be Bold: Opportunities And Challenges In 2011", Uno Office Of The Chancellor
Chancellor’s Speeches
Good morning and welcome to the 2010 convocation. Thank you for attending and as always, it is a privilege to work with the students, faculty, and staff of this incredible institution. I trust you share my pride in being a Maverick.
Today, I want to spend our time together considering three general areas: Metropolitan Fit, Budget and Accomplishments. I hope at the end, that no matter what challenges we may face as a campus, you believe, as I do, that the future remains bright for UNO and for the students we serve.

Death Of A Dream Service-Learning: 1994-2010: A Historical Analysis By One Of The Dreamers, Don Hill
Service Learning, General
This essay was written in 1994 to stimulate discussion about issues that I felt threatened the efforts of the service-learning community to effectively expand with high-quality programs. It was based on my observations as a person involved in providing professional development support to teachers and education professors. — Don Hill, October 2005
Improving Student Learning Outcomes With Service Learning, Mary Prentice, Gail Robinson
Improving Student Learning Outcomes With Service Learning, Mary Prentice, Gail Robinson
Higher Education
Growing numbers of community colleges are incorporating service learning into the curriculum. While research has documented many benefits to those who participate in this experiential pedagogy, a primary goal of service learning is to increase students’ learning of course material.

Educationg Citizens, Building Communities: Annual Membership Survey Results - Executive Summary, Campus Compact
Higher Education
Campus Compact’s annual survey of its 1,100+ member colleges and universities gauges a host of measures of campus commitment to and support for service, service-learning, and civic engagement. Results over the past decade reflect a deepening awareness of the importance of such activities in enhancing teaching and learning, building strong community/campus partnerships, and educating the next generation of responsible leaders.
Overcoming Msw Students’ Reluctance To Engage In Research, Jeanette Harder
Overcoming Msw Students’ Reluctance To Engage In Research, Jeanette Harder
Social Work Faculty Publications
Social work students are typically reluctant to engage in research. The Research Partnership model takes a service-learning approach, allowing students to work with data from a community agency and resulting in a final paper with all the sections of an empirical journal article. Use of this model in teaching social work research enhances student motivation, learning, and skills through hands-on activities within an authentic context, and by using group support with individual accountability, structured and incremental learning opportunities, and teaching from a strengths-based perspective.

been a historic disconnect between the two institutions concerning child abuse prevention efforts. All too often, criticisms and mistrust tend to characterize the way in which the two interact. This qualitative investigation examines the perceptions of both Christian leaders and social service providers on the church’s role in preventing and responding to child abuse and neglect. Researchers interviewed 36 church leaders and social service providers of varying Christian congregations and specialties. Interviews focused on both current and potential church programming and activities, as well as beliefs and values held by both parties concerning child protection and real or potential collaboration. …

“The Practice Of Transformational Stewardship,” Review Of Transforming Public And Nonprofit Organizations, By James Kee And Kathryn Newcomer, Gary S. Marshall
Public Administration Faculty Publications
The concept of transformational stewardship as a force for change was explored in Transforming Public and Nonprofit Organizations: Stewardship for Leading Change by James Edwin Kee and Kathryn E. Newcomer. But how does a public manager become a transformational steward? How is the concept of stewardship related to public leadership?

Emotional Abuse And Controlling Behaviors In Heterosexual Relationships: The Role Of Employment And Alcohol Use For Women And Their Partners, Egbert Zavala, Ryan E. Spohn
Criminology and Criminal Justice Faculty Publications
The purpose of this study is to examine the role of economic resources, status compatibility, and alcohol consumption on forms of nonphysical abuse, such as controlling and emotional abuse. Specifically, we focus on the connections between women’s employment, the employment of their partners, alcohol use, and women’s risk of abuse in intimate relationships. We hypothesize that women in intimate relationships with men will experience more emotional abuse to the extent that they are economically vulnerable. Moreover, abuse should increase if their employment status, in relation to that of their partner, challenges the man’s marital power. Moreover, alcohol use by women …

Inclusive Leadership And Employee Involvement In Creative Tasks In The Workplace: The Mediating Role Of Psychological Safety, Abraham Carmeli, Roni Reiter-Palmon, Enbal Ziv
Psychology Faculty Publications
This study examines how inclusive leadership (manifested by openness, accessibility, and availability of a leader) fosters employee creativity in the workplace. Using a sample of 150 employees, we investigated the relationship between inclusive leadership (measured at Time 1), psychological safety, and employee involvement in creative work tasks (measured at Time 2). The results of structural equation modeling (SEM) analysis indicate that inclusive leadership is positively related to psychological safety, which, in turn, engenders employee involvement in creative work.

Book Review Of Frontiers Of Femininity: A New Historical Geography Of The Nineteenth-Century American West By Karen M. Morin, Christina E. Dando

I found myself drawn again and again to the striking image on the cover of Karen M. Morin’s Frontiers of Femininity, a mirror image created from two photographs, with one reversed. Left, we have a group on Overhanging Rock at Yosemite. Right, we have two women dancing on the Rock, silhouetted against the sky. The experience of being on the edge, of being the edge is central to Morin’s collection of essays in Frontiers of Femininity. The complex frontier that Morin explores calls to mind not only Turner’s frontier but Gloria Anzaldúa's ‘borderlands’:
the Borderlands are physically present wherever …

Volunteer Web Site Effectiveness: Attracting Volunteers Via The Web, Adrian Goh, Joseph A. Allen, Steven G. Rogelberg, Anna Currie

Volunteer programs are shifting towards the use of web sites to recruit volunteers. Using previously recommended practices for web site management, the authors analyzed 93 web sites of volunteer-based animal welfare organizations regarding 14 best practices in web design and management. On average, the organizations used nine of the 14 best practices. The most commonly used practices included (1) providing a link to the volunteer program web page and (2) providing an organizational mission statement. The least commonly used practices included (1) providing information for future orientation sessions and (2) providing a volunteer program mission statement. Analyses further indicated that …
Learning New Words Affects Nonword Pronunciation In Children, Maya Khanna, Michael J. Cortese, Katharine Birchwood
Learning New Words Affects Nonword Pronunciation In Children, Maya Khanna, Michael J. Cortese, Katharine Birchwood
Psychology Faculty Publications
In two experiments we examined how children’s nonword pronunciations are influenced by learning words. In Experiment 1, children pronounced nonwords before and after learning words sharing orthographic rimes with the nonwords. These rimes varied in spelling-to-sound consistency and regularity. Children’s nonword pronunciations were more sensitive to consistency and regularity after instruction than before. Experiment 2 expanded upon Experiment 1 by modifying the instruction to highlight regularity and consistency in rime unit neighborhoods and by including both younger (M age = 7.6) and older (M age = 9.92) participants. After instruction, Experiment 2 participants demonstrated greater sensitivity to rime unit consistency …
A Community Coalition Promotes Family Literacy With Story Celebrations, M. Susan Mcwilliams
A Community Coalition Promotes Family Literacy With Story Celebrations, M. Susan Mcwilliams
Teacher Education Faculty Publications
A coalition is typically formed between individuals or groups to bring unique strengths together in a cooperative manner to address a common cause. In our community, an alliance was formed to raise public consciousness about the impact of family reading on children's literacy development. As a coalition, we planned, organized and funded literacy-related events or story celebrations in multiple locations throughout the community. In this article, I describe and provide rationale for creating a coalition that advocates for family literacy.
