John Platt's article, "Hierarchical Restructuring" (1970), has become something of a "mini-classic" in the systems literature, much like Herbert Simon's paper, "The Architecture of Complexity" (1962). Concerned with the phenomenology of structural change in social systems, in the personalities and psyches of individuals, and in biological and cultural evolution, it in fact quite nicely complements Simon's earlier emphasis on structure and stability. The purpose of this note is to point out a striking similarity between the images of transformation suggested by Platt, and some of the basic features of Rene Thom's catastrophe theory (1975), i.e. that this topological theory can …

It is the purpose of this research practicum to explore the self-reported changes of women who have participated in Preorgasmic Women's Groups. These groups are a type of treatment program for the problem of primary orgasmic dysfunction, and for women who want to learn to experience orgasm through manual masturbation. A Preorgasmic Group relates to a combination of physiological and psychological components of orgasm. It is distinguished from other therapy techniques in that the program involves only women in a group situation and uses a combination of techniques. This study was conducted to serve as a follow-up of services received and/or needed by families with children who have been identified by Crippled Children's Division of the University of Oregon Health Sciences Center as having porencephaly, usually a severe form of brain damage. Porencephaly refers to cystic cavities or lesions in the brain caused by a prenatal insult to the brain resulting in varying degrees of motor and mental deficits. Zion Lutheran Church in Portland has had contact with a number of neighborhood residents who have been released from mental institutions but who have had little community support. The Church has felt the need for some time to develop a residential program for former patients in the area they serve. The authors of this report agreed to conduct a needs assessment and to develop a program relative to the results of the assessment.

This research developed from our interest in juvenile delinquency. We wished to examine how youth workers think about the causes of delinquency, the structure of delinquency programs, and their own role as workers. These perceptions will be examined by looking at workers' responses to statements dealing with 1) juvenile delinquency causation, 2) programs for treatment and prevention, and 3) the role of the worker. The responses will be examined in the light of a theoretical framework reflecting the continuum between theories and programs based on individual causation and those emphasizing societal factors.

This paper will identify the problems faced by deaf people in terms of social and emotional, and then discuss the research on factors which contribute to the problems. The first section will define deafness, investigate the psychological characteristics of the deaf, and then identify the incidence of mental or emotional problems. The purpose of this study was to explore the needs of women experiencing menopause. Since women at this time experience physical, social and emotional changes, they may have a special need for services. Doctors were selected as the population for study because they treat so many women at this age and because they are powerful transmitters of our culture. This exploratory study was designed to provide descriptive information about the doctors' perceptions.

Originally, the focus of this project was to be a policy analysis and survey of the new procedures and regulations established by the state of Oregon for the protection and management of nursing home residents' Personal Incidental Funds (PIF). The two primary purposes of this exploratory study were (1) to establish the theoretical tenability of focusing on the maintenance of self-esteem as a means for enhancing the quality of life in the institutionalized elderly, and (2) to identify factors related to self-esteem in a home for the aged sample.

This practicum intends to explore the motivational factors behind repeat abortions. The underlying assumptions of this study include: (1) women have abortions; (2) women have repeat abortions. In this paper we will discuss our unsuccessful attempt to conduct a self-report study of delinquent behavior in an urban multi-racial high school in Portland, Oregon. Much of this report reflects our preparation in conducting a self-report study and our analysis of why if failed.

The contention of this study is that delinquent behavior, and not juvenile delinquency is the major problem facing youth serving agencies and the public. The purpose of this study is an attempt to refine an often used method of measuring delinquent behavior – the self–report.
