Impact Of Communication On Depressive Vulnerability In Deaf Individuals, Irene W. Leigh, Clive J. Robins, Joan Welkowitz
JADARA
Mode of communication and perceived communication with mother deserve attention within the mother-deaf child relationship. This study explored the impact of both factors on each other and on the vulnerability of young deaf college students for depressive symptoms using measures revised to meet the language needs of this population. Depression was negatively associated with perceived communication with mother. Mode of communication significantly related to perceived communication with mother, with oral subjects scoring highest. They were also least depressed. Further analysis revealed that subjects communicating with their mothers through signs only and vice versa scored as high for perceived maternal communication …

On Establishing A Culturally Affirmative Psychiatric Inpatient Program For Deaf People, Neil S. Glickman, Sherry M. Zitter
JADARA
The authors describe their effort to create a Deaf culturally affirmative psychiatric inpatient unit at a state psychiatric hospital in Massachusetts. A culturally affirmative program is defined as one based on Deaf cultural values. Four values are discussed in the context of how they could be translated into programmatic realities. These values are (1) that the least restrictive environment for serving deaf people is a Deaf environment; (2) that communication needs to be appropriate as well as affirming of the Deaf community; (3) that staff have to be recruited, hired and developed with the necessary cultural and clinical skills; and …
Making Evaluation Reports Effective Interventions For Change, Michael A. Harvey
Making Evaluation Reports Effective Interventions For Change, Michael A. Harvey
JADARA
Despite recent advances in assessing Deaf persons, the rate of client compliance for following recommendations remains low. The assessment process often affects the eco-system of a client so that the system nullifies the impact of the assessment report; the process of assessment becomes an intervention. Since assessment is synonymous with intervention, it would be beneficial for diagnosticians to use intervention techniques purposefully. Some intervention guidelines are to: (1) identify the persons who comprise the client's meaningful system and their patterns of relationships; (2) formulate a tentative systemic diagnosis of the presenting problem, from which the systemic effects of the evaluation …
