Doing Participatory Action Research As A Doctoral Student In The Peace And Conflict Studies Field, Phill Gittins Oct 2019

Doing Participatory Action Research As A Doctoral Student In The Peace And Conflict Studies Field, Phill Gittins

Peace and Conflict Studies

There is still little written about doing participatory action research (PAR) as a doctoral student. This paper provides a missing first-person account of doing a PAR Ph.D. in the Peace and Conflict Studies (PACS) field. Based on the author’s own experience of using PAR as part of his PACS doctoral degree this paper reflects on why he decided to use PAR in his doctorate project and how he went about doing it. It further highlights some of the benefits (academic and non-academic) of doing a PAR Ph.D., as well as challenges faced and responses to them. Four key lessons learned …

An Interprofessional Collaborative Approach To The Development Of A Content Valid Interview Questionnaire For Persons With Hearing Loss And Their Communication Partners, Nancy A. Delich, Stephen D. Roberts Oct 2019

An Interprofessional Collaborative Approach To The Development Of A Content Valid Interview Questionnaire For Persons With Hearing Loss And Their Communication Partners, Nancy A. Delich, Stephen D. Roberts

JADARA

An assessment instrument needs to be valid in order for data to be accurately interpreted and applied. Currently, few rigorous content evaluations have been conducted on hearing-related questionnaires. This study describes a multiphase approach for obtaining content validity evidence in the development of a questionnaire that explores quality of life for persons with hearing loss and their communication partners. A panel of 15 interprofessional experts evaluated 41 questionnaire items for content relevance and content clarity. Findings revealed an overall scale of .99 for content relevance and .85 for content clarity, indicating high content validity for the revised 40-item questionnaire.

Deaf Adult Consumers Of Public Behavioral Health Services In Maryland: January 1, 2016 – January 1, 2018, Teresa Crowe Ph.D

JADARA

This exploratory study describes the demographic profiles of 7,474 deaf adults who are consumers of public behavioral health services in the state of Maryland. Up until recent years, data about deaf consumers were unavailable to researchers. Over the past two years, additional items were added to the Outcome Measurement Systems interview, such as “primary language” and boxes where providers could record “deaf.” The data presented in this paper are for deaf adults who received services from January 1, 2016 to January 1, 2018. The results of this study indicate that: 1) most deaf consumers lived in private residences, 2) consumers …

Triple Aims Healthcare Policy Voices Of Graduate Student Interprofessional Team Members, Gary J. Skolits, Rachel N. Ladd, Paul Kirkland, Lora Beebe, Marian Roman

The Qualitative Report

The purpose of this study is to share the voices of healthcare graduate students participating in an interprofessional course experience, particularly as their voice relate to fundamental healthcare issues care embodied in the Triple Aims. Two research questions guided study efforts: (1) how do graduate students perceive the value of interprofessional learning experiences for their professional development as future healthcare providers? and (2) based on these experiences, how do students perceive the potential for interprofessional teams to address the Triple Aims of health care? This study was based on the qualitative approach of inductive thematic coding (Braun & Clarke, 2006). …

Use Of Culture In The Website Brand Management Of Kentucky Wine Producers, Benjamin J. Triana

The Qualitative Report

Digital and social media offer new opportunities for communication for brands, producers, and their stakeholders, especially for local producers with limited access to multiple industry-related marketing and communication resources. This study examines the digital brand management practices presented on the websites of Kentucky wine producers. The study analyzed all available Kentucky wine websites during the length of the study (2013-2015) with emphasis on the use of culture in the brand messaging. Deaf Employment Assistance Network: A Model For Employment Service Delivery, Peter C. Myers, Marita M. Danek

JADARA

The successful rehabilitation of deaf clients depends on attention to both individual and environmental factors which hinder vocational attainment and satisfaction. An ecological framework is outlined, the model is described, and discussion is offered.

Hearing Loss Within A Jail Population, Corinne K. Jensema Sep 2019

Hearing Loss Within A Jail Population, Corinne K. Jensema

JADARA

A research study conducted at the Prince Georges County (MD) Jail during July and August, 1988 looked at incidence of hearing loss and other factors that may be related to hearing loss. Of those who participated in the study, almost 35% failed the hearing screening. A questionnaire administered to the subjects revealed that those who failed the hearing screening tended to be older, have experienced more general medical problems and problems related to their hearing, to have had more exposure to loud noises, and to have more communication difficulties. Recommendations for future research and intervention with the incarcerated population are …

Interpreting For Cross-Cultural Research: Changing Written English To American Sign Language, Helene Cohen, Elaine G. Jones Sep 2019

Interpreting For Cross-Cultural Research: Changing Written English To American Sign Language, Helene Cohen, Elaine G. Jones

JADARA

The quality of cross-cultural research depends on the skills of the investigators and interpreters who participate in each study. This paper addresses sign language interpreters' participation in translating quantitative instruments from written English (source language) into American Sign Language (target language) for use in cross-cultural studies of people who are part of Deaf culture. First, research goals should be explicitly identified as either operational or comparative, and matched appropriately with an asymmetrical or symmetrical translation strategy. Next, interpreters often use a back translation process, with multiple checks on the conceptual integrity of the target language version of the instrument. Qualifications …

Deaf Community Leaders As Liaisons Between Mental Health And Deaf Cultures, Tenna M. Wax Sep 2019

Deaf Community Leaders As Liaisons Between Mental Health And Deaf Cultures, Tenna M. Wax

JADARA

Providing mental health services to deaf people is usually a formidable task. Given the movement to more "ecological" perspective on mental health issues in deaf people, it seems that two important features of successful mental health service delivery to deaf people would include in-depth understanding of experiential and cultural differences among people in the deaf community and development of a sturdy "bridge" between the mental health service provider community and the deaf community. This paper will describe the evolution of attempts in Washington State, from 1984 to 1987, to provide more adequate mental health services for deaf people. On the …
