Effect Of Age, Sex, Hearing Loss And Etiology Upon Manual Dexterity Skill Of Deaf Children, John M. Zody, Dean R. Gorman
Effect Of Age, Sex, Hearing Loss And Etiology Upon Manual Dexterity Skill Of Deaf Children, John M. Zody, Dean R. Gorman
JADARA
The primary purpose was to determine the effect age, sex, hearing loss, and etiology had on the performance of manipulative tests. A secondary purpose was to investigate the relationship between reaction time and manual dexterity. Fifty subjects with deafness, age eight to fifteen, participated. ANOVA revealed one significant difference between etiological groups. Ten significant differences were identified for age. Post-hoc evaluation identified the performance of the youngest and oldest age groups to be significantly different. Two-sample independent t-tests were performed to investigate the between group differences of severe <= 90 db vs. profound >90 db hearing loss and male vs. female. There was no significant …=>

Conservation And Metaphor Performance Among Children With Hearing Impairments, Pamela R. Inman, Ming-Gon John Lian
JADARA
The present study was to determine conservation and metaphor performance of 35 children who used cued speech or ora1/alural communication modes. Correlations between conservation and metaphor responses and their relationships to age, specialized educational program, degree of hearing loss, and communication mode were conducted for a descriptive analysis. Certain significant relationships were found and discussed. Educational implications and recommendations were indicated.

Issues In Serving Deaf-Blind Persons, Marie Egbert Rendon
Issues In Serving Deaf-Blind Persons, Marie Egbert Rendon
JADARA
A panel discussion about deaf-blind issues brought together four experts in the field; Dr.Lea Hyvarinen, M.D., addressed the problem from the medical viewpoint; Charlotte Whiteacre, a deaf- blind professional, provided a view from a consumer as well as a professional; Carol Day- Drummer gave insight into clinical aspects; and Lindsay Gimble provided discernment into working with the deaf-blind population from the interpreting stance. This article is based upon these four "testimonies" and provides the reader with an all-around look at providing services to persons who are deaf-blind. In addition to the presentations, the question and answer session brought into action …

A Priority Lexicon For Hearing-Impaired Children: Staff Perceptions, Mary Evelyn Moore, Lanny E. Morreau, Judith R. Johnston
A Priority Lexicon For Hearing-Impaired Children: Staff Perceptions, Mary Evelyn Moore, Lanny E. Morreau, Judith R. Johnston
JADARA
The purpose of this study was to identify the priorities assigned to lexical items by staff members who work with hearing impaired children and to characterize those selections. Seventy-three staff members rated individual vocabulary items from two lists previously developed from staff working with hearing- impaired children to create a "priority-lexicon." The resulting lexicon was then compared to developmental data from two studies of children having no impairments to determine if a lexicon based on perceived need was consistent with patterns of normal language acquisition.
Use Of Raven’S And Naglieri’S Nonverbal Matrix Texts, Jack A. Naglieri, Jane A. Welch
Use Of Raven’S And Naglieri’S Nonverbal Matrix Texts, Jack A. Naglieri, Jane A. Welch
JADARA
This study examined the differences between the Raven's Standard Progressive Matrices scores obtained using the European (Raven, Court & Raven,1977) and U.S.(Raven,1986) nonnative samples and the Matrix Analogies Test-Expanded Form (MAT-EF) (Naglieri, 1985b). The sample of 34 hearing-impaired students (26 males and 8 females) with a mean age of 13 years 7 months (SD of 2 years, 2 months) attended a state residential school for the deaf. Raven's and Naglieri's matrices tests were administered in counterbalanced order in one session. Results indicated that the sample earned similar mean scores on the Raven's U.S. norms and Naglieri's MAT-EF, but both these …

The Establishment Of A Deaf Employment Task Force In A Major Corporation, Paul J. Berkay
The Establishment Of A Deaf Employment Task Force In A Major Corporation, Paul J. Berkay
JADARA
The purpose of this article was to propose a model based on a case study of a Deaf Employment Task Force established in a Fortune 500 corporation. The Task Force was composed of representatives from departments that impacted successful deaf employment. Although progress was slow, major accomplishments were realized. Invalid vocational testing was discontinued for all deaf assembly job applicants. Deaf awareness workshops were administered to supervisors and co-workers of deaf employees on a company- wide basis. Setbacks also occurred. Attendance at meetings was unstable, and the Task Force failed to obtain support from top-level management. Based on this experience, …
The Economic Impact Of Deafness, William A. Welsh
The Economic Impact Of Deafness, William A. Welsh
JADARA
The purpose of this paper was to determine the economic impact of deafness over a 40-year work life. Information provided by the U.S. Internal Revenue Service made it possible to estimate the lifetime earnings of 4,398 deaf adults who had a wide variety of educational backgrounds. Data on the U.S. population as a whole (matched on age and education), extracted from U.S. Bureau of the Census publications, were used for purposes of comparison. Results indicate that the economic cost of deafness is great. Over the course of a lifetime deaf people earn between $356,000 and $609,000 less than their comparably …

Short Term Memory Abilities Of Skilled Signers, Dick Vallandingham
JADARA
The principal purpose of this study was to investigate the short term auditory storage and retrieval abilities of skilled interpreters for the deaf.
It was assumed that the task of interpreting spoken English to ASL involved short term auditory storage, the efficacy of which was related to chunking abilities of the listener.
Three groups often subjects each made up the sample population. Group A was composed of individuals with interest in but limited knowledge of sign language. Group B was composed of individuals with no knowledge of sign language. Group C was composed of individuals holding the Comprehensive Skills Certificate …
