Providing Chemical Dependency Treatment To The Deaf Or Hard Of Hearing Mentally Ill Client, Debra Guthmann, Ronald Lybarger, Katherine Sandberg

The Minnesota Chemical Dependency Program for Deaf and Hard of Hearing Individuals is an inpatient chemical dependency treatment program designed to meet the cultural and communication needs of deaf or hard of hearing people seeking treatment services for alcohol or other drug dependency. Over 75% of the clients served have chemical dependency and additional mental illness- related disorders. This paper discusses treatment strategies and approaches used with dually- diagnosed clients, as well as considerations for effectively dealing with various psychiatric disorders including depression, borderline personality disorder, antisocial personality disorder, post-traumatic stress disorder, and developmental disorder.

Visual Motor Perception In Deaf Students, Marc S. Getz, Mccay Vernon

This study was conducted to determine if certain types of neurological screening techniques demonstrate more sensitivity to the neurological differences existent among groups of deaf individuals with differing etiologies of hearing loss. The subjects consisted of 40 deaf volunteers, ranging in age from 16 to 20 years, selected on the basis of their etiology of deafness. The assignment of subjects yielded three in situ conditions: rubella, meningitis, and genetic. Subjects were administered the Bender Gestalt Test and the Trail Making Test to determine if significant differences exist among these groups in their performance on these neurological screening techniques. Whether initiating the design and development of new programs/or modifying existing programs/those who seek to support deaf/hard-of-hearing students in mainstreamed environments must carefully consider the nature and needs of both the academic environment and the student. Developing systems of support which are effective, cost-effective, and relevant to faculty and students requires dose examination of the broader questions of organization/ administration and resources/ as well as specific attention to details of classroom d3mamics and thoughtful analysis of students' academic/and personal-social needs.

This article presents the vision and accessibility level model for the Model Mental Health State Plan (MMHSP) of Services for Persons who are Deaf or Hard-of-Hearing. The final document will be made up of guidelines, recommendations, and resources which will help states evaluate existing services, develop new services, and develop a state plan to meet the treatment and accessibility needs of citizens who are deaf and mentally ill. The document is being developed by the Model Mental Health State Plan Subcommittee of ADARA's Mental Health Section.

American Indians who are deaf may exhibit a complex mix of cultural characteristics common to Indian, Deaf, and hearing Anglo society. The pressures of living with multicultural identities and the conflicts of competing cultural influences can exacerbate the difficulty of dealing with personal stress. Counselors without training in cross-cultural interventions may be unaware of important cultural differences affecting the counseling relationship, particularly the elements of cultural identity that tend to be shared by Deaf and Indian people.
