The number of deaf people owning a business has increased exponentially over the years, making this a worthy subject for exploration and research.Especially in today’seconomy, entrepreneurship,ortheprocessofestablishingand maintainingabusinessventure,has become a viable career option for many deafand hard of hearing individuals.Insights will be offered from the author's phenomenological research on the lived experiences of deaf entrepreneurs and business owners. The authors present a framework and practical strategies for engaging deaf persons who have language and learning challenges as well as sexual offending behaviors in sex offender oriented mental health treatment. Current treatment approaches for persons who commit sexual offenses are reviewed along with modifications that have been made for persons with intellectual impairments. The additional challenges when the persons referred are deaf and poor language users are explored. Prevalence Of Suicide Attempts In A Deaf Population With Co-Occurring Substance Use Disorder, Jared A. Embree

The Deaf Off Drugs & Alcohol (DODA) Program provides culturally appropriate recovery services via e-therapy to Deaf and hard of hearing (HH) individuals with substance use disorder (SUD). In the first three years DODA was providing services,149 consumers (107 Deaf, 42 HH) received treatment. A retrospective secondary data analysis sought to examine the lifetime prevalence of suicidal behavior in Deaf individuals receiving alcohol and drug treatment services from the DODA program. The prevalence of self-reported lifetime suicide attempts in the Deaf sample was 42.1%, higher than rates reported for other subgroups with coexisting conditions. Improved functioning is typical when deaf mental health consumers are removed from inaccessible programming and placed in accessible environments. Observed gains have long-provided convincing evidence that social interaction (in sign language) is essential to recovery from mental illness. Still, many deaf people reside in psychiatric settings alongside others with whom they cannot communicate. A focus group was convened to investigate services in New York's Capital Region. Identified barriers included lack of deaf clinicians, scarcity of qualified mental health interpreters, and funding restrictions. This article discusses the importance of ethical standards for rehabilitation counselors who work with clients who are Deaf or hard of hearing. Rehabilitation professionals in this field are often faced with the possible ethical dilemma of having overlapping relationships at personal, business, or other professional levels. The study used qualitative research methods to examine cultural beliefs, specifically those that are spiritual, as well as gender-related norms to explicate HIV/AIDS risk behaviors among deaf persons residing in rural and peri-urban areas of Kwa Zulu-Natal Province, South Africa. Existing findings, though limited, suggest that there are insufficient understandings among deaf South Africans about HIV/AIDS. While the deaf population exceeds 4 million, they are among the least educated, most illiterate, and least employed, and experience higher rates of poverty. The Identity Development Of The Only Hearing Child In An All-Deaf Family, Audrey Frank

This article focuses on identity development among individuals who grew up as the only hearing child in an otherwise all-deaf family. Being the only hearing child (assuming they have deaf siblings) is quite different from being one of a number of hearing children of deaf parents. It is critical to enhance awareness among parents, teachers, and mental health professionals of such obstacles, particularly for children who are the only hearing members of their deaf families.

Attention restraint appears to mediate the relationship between working memory capacity (WMC) and mind wandering (Kane et al., 2016). Prior work has identifed two dimensions of mind wandering—emotional valence and intentionality. However, less is known about how WMC and attention restraint correlate with these dimensions. Te current study examined the relationship between WMC, attention restraint, and mind wandering by emotional valence and intentionality. A confrmatory factor analysis demonstrated that WMC and attention restraint were strongly correlated, but only attention restraint was related to overall mind wandering, consistent with prior fndings. This paper illustrates how the Analytic Guiding Frame (AGF) and the Overall Guiding Frame (OGF) are applied when analytic shifts occur in qualitative data analysis. Analytic shifts mainly occur when a proposed analytical method is found to be not fully amenable for analysis because of the contextually-bound nature of qualitative data. This study investigated the positive and negative behavioral outcomes resulting from the pragmatic and psychological impacts of workplace ostracism experienced by university teachers in Pakistan. Using a qualitative and phenomenological approach, the data were gathered from 20 ostracized teachers working in public and private sector higher educational institutions in Pakistan. The results revealed that participants faced both the psychological and pragmatic impacts of workplace ostracism. Most of the ostracized teachers indicated positive behavioral outcomes due to being collectivist and placing a high value on social relations.
