Digital Commons Great Lakes User Group Annual Meeting

Open Education Resources (OER) are digital materials used for educational purposes that are intentionally made available to the public. An increasing number of university faculty create and use such resources in their teaching. Partnering with the creators of OER is an excellent way to gather high-quality, unique content for the repository while helping to fulfill the goal of making OER widely available. This session will introduce considerations regarding the value and process of building an OER collection in the repository.

Through the generous support of Provost Geoffrey Mearns, the Kickstart service was purchased for Cleveland State University’s implementation of Digital Commons, EngagedScholarship@CSU. This outstanding service provided two types of resources to help our repository get off to a quick start. Since our training in early March 2012, we have already entered 1,191 documents and 94 associated SelectedWorks pages. We initially identified 10 departments/units on campus that produced abundant scholarly works. These departments and faculty were targeted for a scan for works in the Web of Knowledge. The tourism industry continues to be touted as the main income and employment generator for Caribbean nations. In the Dominican Republic (DR), international tourism has become one of the largest industries and is a major contributor to the country’s economic growth. Traditionally, Jamaica has been seen and promoted as a sun, sea and sand, winter get-away with foreign-owned, multinational corporations (MNCs) having a controlling interest. Coupled with this, the policies adopted by the state to encourage tourism infrastructural development protected the interests of the MNCs and were seen by many Jamaicans as not being in the best interest of their country. As a result, high levels of resentment existed and at times boiled into open conflict between tourists and the Jamaican working class who viewed tourists as ”confused white people.” While efforts were made to promote Jamaica’s tourism internationally, little was …

The purpose of this study was to create a profile of the adventure traveler’s lifestyles, values and travel motivations. An understanding of the lifestyle and attitudes of today’s adventure traveler can aid tourism marketers in designing messages tailored to this unique target market. Differences and similarities between genders and the age cohorts of Generation Y, Generation X and Baby Boomers were examined. Across the sample most participated in a “traditional” type of sport before migrating to an adventure activity and they also engaged in more than one type of adventure activity.

Engineering South Of The Border: A Librarian’S Experience In Nicaragua, Debbie Morrow

I will spend the first half of May’12 in Estelí, Nicaragua, as a volunteer member of a project to teach product innovation and development skills to students and faculty of the Nicaraguan national university system. The two leaders, Engineering and Business faculty members from GVSU, require no special expertise or language skills for volunteers, but are excited at the prospect of having a library professional among the support group in this year’s seventh annual iteration of the program. I look forward to sharing what I learn about engineering and academics in a culture eager to develop.

Incorporating Millennium Catalog Records Into Serials Solutions' Summon, Jeffrey Daniels, Patrick Roth

Grand Valley State University implemented the web scale discovery system, Summon from Serials Solutions, in August of 2009. The decision was made to use Summon search as the only search box on the library home page. This fueled the desire to ensure that the Grand Valley State University local catalog was included in the Summon index. The inclusion of these records caused many issues that had to be addressed and worked through, including daily updates and incorrect data. In this article the authors share their experiences and discuss solutions to issues faced during and after the implementation.

Financial pressures, the rise of online content, and the ability to easily share and distribute materials are driving libraries to reexamine many of their practices and priorities. This presentation will explore how libraries are moving from traditional models of collection develop toward a new future where the focus is on curating access to information and on supporting the production and dissemination of scholarly resources.
