A Direct And Behavioral Travel Demand Model For Prediction Of Campground Use By Urban Recreationists, Andre Kimboko

Dissertations and Theses

The object of this research is to develop a travel demand model. The model predicts outdoor recreational travel of urban recreationists for camping. The development of this model is structured by a set of methodological criteria. These criteria relate to destination choice behavior in the context of recreation travel, and analytical structures of travel demand, in addition to the criterion of model performance. The thrust of this research is to define and evaluate a destination choice function with respect to recreational travel.

This issue of Review of Applied Urban Research features "Location Decision Making in Three Suburban Omaha Office Clusters," by Armin K. Ludwig.

Consumers of suburban office space are faced with location decisions which do not challenge consumers of Central Business District (CBD) office space. By definition there is only one CBD with its relatively fixed site characteristics and relatively fixed transportation linkages to other parts of a metropolitan region. Those consumers who choose not to locate in the CBD are confronted with a myriad of site characteristics and a wide variety of transportation linkages not only to the CBD but …

The New Deal Public Works Programs And Mexican-Americans In Mcallen, Texas, 1933-36, Irene Ledesma

Theses and Dissertations - UTB/UTPA

In an area like the Rio Grande Valley of Texas with a majority population of unskilled Mexican-Americans who generally worked for another group in trouble, the farmer, there was bound to be a high rate of unemployment during the Great Depression of the 1930's. Franklin D. Roosevelt's administration responded to unemployment with the several New Deal public works acts in 1933. The question then arises: what effect would such acts have on a majority group in an area where the minority population had political power?

Extensive use of county and city newspapers, a number of interviews, a short survey, and …

The most commonly recognized factors that attract industrial investment to a city are those with impact upon sales and profit. Size of market; availability and price of labor, materials and service; and proximity to supportive industry all weigh heavily. In addition, location decision makers must consider the conditions that relate to living in the new area: a city's overall economic condition, its demographic and physical environment, the seriousness of its crime problems, and its recreational and educational opportunities. Similarly, the decision may reflect acceptance of the premise that such conditions as a city's geographic location, its population size or growth …

The victim was breaching the minefield from the Rhodesian side in order to retrieve sensitive equipment left on the other side by the Rhodesian Airforce. He was crouching down using an 18-inch ".303" bayonet to prod the ground in order to find safe places to put his feet. When he was 10-15m inside the minefield he prodded onto a R2M2 mine that exploded. The victim believed that rainwater had caused the mine to flip onto its side at right angles to its normal position.

Party registration was the factor most associated with the mayoral vote, according to an analysis of survey data collected by CAUR in the five days preceding the May 10, 1977 election.1 Although the pattern of votes in the non-partisan mayoral election was also associated with sex, geographical area, and age, the relationship was strongest for party registration. Betty Abbott (a registered Republican) was favored by 58 percent of the registered Republicans willing to disclose their choices, and AI Veys …

Disengagement Of Older People In An Urban Setting, Melvina Somers Jun 1977

Disengagement Of Older People In An Urban Setting, Melvina Somers

Dissertations and Theses

This dissertation reevaluates the controversial Disengagement Theory of aging introduced by Elaine Cumming and William E. Henry in their book, Growing Old (1961), with particular emphasis on aging in the city.

Disengagement theory embodies the antithesis to the traditional activity theory of aging based on a work ethic. Disengagement theory holds that normal aging is an inevitable mutual withdrawal or disengagement between the aging person and others in the social system, that it is universal, and that, by impl ication,it is a mutually satisfying condition since it results in a new equilibrium between society and the aging individual. The theory …

Determinants Of Old Age Assistance In The American States, Roger A. Lohmann Jun 1977

Determinants Of Old Age Assistance In The American States, Roger A. Lohmann

Faculty & Staff Scholarship

A large body of research evidence has accumulated in the past two decades dealing with the question of variations in state-level public expenditures in the United States. Variations among the states in public welfare expenditures are the most outstanding exception with regard to the explanation of state governmental expenditures. This study explores the reasons that public welfare is so unlike other public expenditures, outlines the principal findings of other studies bearing on this question, and reports findings explaining at least part of the observed variations in the expenditure patterns.

Radial Freeways And The Growth Of Office Space In Central Cities, Armin K. Ludwig May 1977

Radial Freeways And The Growth Of Office Space In Central Cities, Armin K. Ludwig

Publications

Seven metropolitan areas were studied to determine the impact of freeways upon the location of office development and to estimate the economic impact of this development upon the community. Findings indicated a suburbanization of office space. New locations were heavily influenced by radial freeway corridors although circumferential corridors were proportionately more attractive (1970-1976 office site growth rates of 562% and 273% respectively, with 101% for non-interstate radial corridors). Freeways which increased accessibility of office workers and improved access to vacant land tended to attract office development; investment funds often were more readily available for radial freeway sites. Other factors--price of …

This issue of Review of Applied Urban Research features "Economic Impact of Non-Profit Nebraska Arts Organizations," by Murray Frost.

The value of a community's theatre and dance groups, art galleries, symphony and other performing and visual arts is usually assessed from the perspective of the community's cultural life. The organizations which promote and facilitate artistic development are usually perceived in relation to their value only to the artists and their audiences. However, the artists and their organizations also contribute to the economy of their communities through salaries to employees, consumption of supplies, rent and purchase of facilities, and use of …
