Statutory Provisions Of The Fifty States Relating To Save Harmless Legislation And Legislated Authority To School Corporations For The Purchase Of Liability Insurance, Kenneth Thomas Murray

All-Inclusive List of Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Purpose. This paper is a comprehensive collection of statutes of the fifty states relating to save harmless legislation and legislated authority for school corporations to purchase liability insurance for themselves and/or their officers and employees. These protective statutes have become necessary as the doctrine of governmental immunity for school corporations has slowly eroded. Not only can school corporations and their employees be held liable for damages resulting from tort, but for some offenses school board members can be held personally liable for damages to be paid from their own pockets. Procedures. The collection of statutes at the Indiana University Law …

The value of a community's theatre and dance groups, art galleries, symphony and other performing and visual arts is usually assessed from the perspective of the community's cultural life. The organizations which promote and facilitate artistic development are usually perceived in relation to their value only to the artists and their audiences. However, the artists and their organizations also contribute to the economy of their communities through salaries to employees, consumption of supplies, rent and purchase of facilities, and use of trans portation, maintenance, advertising and other service industries. To a great extent, the position of the arts in a …

Park Visitor Responses To Natural Hazards, Lee H. Rentz May 1978

Park Visitor Responses To Natural Hazards, Lee H. Rentz

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

Natural hazards have been an increasing problem in wildland recreation areas. This study attempted to identify factors affecting park visitor perception of and preparedness for hazards.

A model was formulated incorporating three major independent variables which might affect park visitor responses to hazards. These were: (1) previous experience, (2) information about hazards provided by the park administration (such as warnings located on signs or in brochures), and (3) visitor perception of whether responsibility for hazards rests with the individual or with an outside authority such as government or God. Trip length and knowledge of hazards were also thought to be …

Contributing Factors To The Existence Of Right-To-Work Laws In Two Southern States, Timothy A. Bledsoe May 1978

Contributing Factors To The Existence Of Right-To-Work Laws In Two Southern States, Timothy A. Bledsoe

Graduate Theses and Dissertations

Providing explanations of why governments or political systems adopt the public policies they do is and has been a goal of political science for some time. The purpose of this paper is to investigate one specific policy out-come -- so called "right-to- work" laws -- in the context of the political environment provided by two Southern states: Arkansas and Louisiana.1 Specifically, an effort will be made to determine what environmental factors have tended to encourage the adoption of right-to-work laws and how the proponents and opponents of such laws have attempted to influence their passage or repeal.

Climatic Change Considered As The Major Factor In The Abandonment Of The Grand Canyon Region, Paulette Fern Rayel

Masters Theses

Introduction

Grand Canyon National Park comprises 1009 square miles of contrasting life zones and landscapes, with elevations ranging from 2500 feet at the Colorado River to more than 9000 feet of the North Rim. This area includes 117 miles of the Canyon, part of the Kaibab Plateua known as the North Rim and part of the Coconino Plateau or South Rim. Both formations are included in the Colorado Plateau (See Figures 1 and 2).

Archaeological evidence indicates that prehistoric agriculturalists - the Cohonina peoples and later the Anasazi - resided in the area from circa A. D. 700 until A. …

Longitudinal Patterns Of Centralization And Development: Testing Theories Of Governmental Organization, Dale Krane Apr 1978

Longitudinal Patterns Of Centralization And Development: Testing Theories Of Governmental Organization, Dale Krane

Public Administration Faculty Publications

In attempting to cope with the challenges of modernization, government officials are urged by specialists in development and comparative administration to manipulate the organization of public activity. Prescriptions for altering the public sector usually advocate one of two simple but contradictory options: centralization or decentralization. Adopting one or the other of these administrative arrangements reputedly yields important benefits which have system-wide impact on the course of development.1 Unfortunately, no a priori principle exists to guide the choice between these sharply divergent alternatives. The present study was designed to compare the consequences of these organizational strategies in order to evaluate …

Reducing The Hidden Cost Of Big Government, Testimony Before The Joint Economic Committee Of The U.S. Congress Priorities In Tax Policy, Testimony Before The U.S. Senate Committee On Finance, Murray L. Weidenbaum

Murray Weidenbaum Publications

The largest and most rapid increase in government power over the private sector is not in the areas of taxation or government spending. Rather, it is the expansion of government regulation that impacts the everyday consumer, motorist, homeowner, worker, investor, taxpayer, and nation as a whole in distinct ways. It concludes by suggesting several initial reforms.

Symbolic Interaction And Social Planning: Perspectives From The Early Years, Roger A. Lohmann Mar 1978

Symbolic Interaction And Social Planning: Perspectives From The Early Years, Roger A. Lohmann

Faculty & Staff Scholarship

The principal thesis of this paper is that the inadequacies of recent efforts at social planning are essential failures of theory, rather than failures of practice. Economic, land use and social welfare planners it is suggested have all shared a common unwillingness or inability to abandon commitments to an essentially utilitarian rhetoric of reasoned behavior, wherein means are matched with ends, persons are viewed as essentially self-interested and goal-directed rational problem solvers operating on schedules of goal attainment known or predictable by the planners. Symbolic interaction theory has resources to revitalize planning theory. Selected publications by John Dewey, G.H. Mead, …
