The Nebraska Annual Social Indicators Surveys (NASIS) produce current, topical information about Nebraskans and monitor change in quality of life. The 1997 NASIS included questions that addressed four broad areas of public input: • Perceptions of higher education institutions and educational needs • Perceptions of the University of Nebraska and its programs • Awareness and perceptions of University of Nebraska Cooperative Extension and its programs • Use of electronic and communications technology in the home and workplace Data were collected via telephone surveys. Data addressing perceptions about higher education were collected November 1997 through January 1998 from a random sample …

During 1998 the NN21 Food Systems in 2020 Action Team at the University of Nebraska sponsored two symposiums to stimulate thinking and discussion about the nature of the food system that will evolve by the year 2020, and the potential role of the University of Nebraska in shaping that system and educating people to participate effectively in it. The first symposium, "The Food System for 2020: Nebraska's Opportunities", was held on January 14, with approximately 185 in attendance. Examining The Effect Of Industry Trends And Structure On Welfare Caseloads, Timothy J. Bartik, Randall W. Eberts
Examining The Effect Of Industry Trends And Structure On Welfare Caseloads, Timothy J. Bartik, Randall W. Eberts
Upjohn Institute Working Papers
Previous studies of the macro-economic determinants of welfare caseloads have had difficulty in explaining changes in welfare caseloads during the last decade or so using the simple macroeconomic measure of unemployment. Because welfare recipients will typically get entry-level jobs, employment variables that are closely related to job vacancies, such as employment growth, are also important in determining welfare caseloads, as we show empirically in this study. Recognizing that welfare recipients face more substantial barriers to employment than those who typically have more education and skills, we constructed several macro-economic variables that reflect the education requirements of industries and the predominance …

Displaced Children And Orphans Fund And War Victims Fund Activities In Sri Lanka, Usaid-Leahy
Global CWD Repository
The Displaced Children and Orphans Fund (DCOF),which is administered by the Office of Health and Nutrition of the Bureau for Global Programs, Field Support and Research, U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID), is a special fund within the agency that provides assistance for special groups of vulnerable children. It operates under its own strategic objective which is “the protection, well-being and development of war-affected children, unaccompanied minors and orphans.” The Leahy War Victims Fund (LWVF), initiated in 1988 by Senator Patrick J. Leahy, operates similarly to the DCOF. Its stated objective is “The functional reintegration of war victims into civil …

Holgate Lake Study: An Examination Of The Issues Associated With Groundwater Flooding, John J. Lynch Jr., Heidi A. Mader, Mark Mccann
Master of Urban and Regional Planning Workshop Projects
This project examines Holgate Lake. Despite its natural hazard characteristics, the Holgate Lake area has not been immune to development pressure. Holgate Lake is an intermittent water body that forms when groundwater levels rise. Historical accounts show that the lake has formed at many different times in the last century. Because the lake fluctuates with the groundwater level, it is not necessarily present from year to year. As the area has developed, more and more people built in the location of the natural lakebed when the water was not present. When the lake level returned in the 1960's flooding of …

With the dramatic advances in computer technology in recent decades, the increase of crimes committed using high technology has skyrocketed. Losses to corporations and governmental agencies have totalled millions if not billions of dollars per year. Victims are beginning to speak out and ask for help. Law enforcement agencies throughout the country are teaming together to create specialized crime units and task forces in an attempt to successfully combat computer related crimes. Nevada is one of the many states which is in the infancy stages of developing such a task force. The Sacramento Valley High Tech Crime Task Force has …

Politics, Pedagogy, And Shaping Public Policy, Jill Dolan
Center for LGBTQ Studies (CLAGS)
We never exactly know when history is going to catch up with us, when we'll be in the midst of a crucial moment to which posterity will refer as key, as significant, as a lynchpin on which other moments, other decisions, other understandings were founded. The impeachment hearings recently conducted in the House of Representatives dragged us all, unwilling and amazed, into a dark hour of American politics, one in which partisan fury and ideological hatred are translated into strategies of power that disregard and reverse electoral politics. There's much to say about the disappointing performance of Bill Clinton as …

Using Selective Mmpl-2 Clinical Scales To Predict The Severity Of Prison Infractions For First Degree Murderers In A Maximum Security Prison, Margarita Lynn Pauley
Using Selective Mmpl-2 Clinical Scales To Predict The Severity Of Prison Infractions For First Degree Murderers In A Maximum Security Prison, Margarita Lynn Pauley
Theses, Dissertations and Capstones
The MMPI-2 was administered to 56 adult male offenders in a maximum-security prison serving a life sentence for first degree murder. This study evaluated the predictive ability of the MMPI-2 scales 4, 6 and 9 to distinguish among groups of inmates with high and low infraction rates. Results indicated that as the weighted infraction rate (WRI) increased above 9, the T score on scale 4 sharply decreased at the same rate of the increase for 0-9 WRI. Results also supported a relationship where as the T score on scale 9 increased the WIR also increased. Inmates who refused to comply …
