The Journey Toward Sustainability: Positive Impact Of Environmental, Social, And Governance Index On Transportation., Doreen Mcgunagle, Laura Zizka, Ron Mau, Patti Clark
Publications
The transportation industry has been criticized for its hefty environmental footprint, questionable social practices, and lack of transparency regarding governance. Thus, more companies have begun including Environmental, Social, and Governance (ESG) issues in their strategies. Research has shown that effectively integrating ESG into business models can improve financial performance by tackling environmental, social, and governance challenges. This sustainable progress can be quantified by considering the extent to which the products or services produced by the firm’s harm or benefit social welfare. The current research paper examines ESG and financial performance over time in the Transportation Industry by comparing data from …
Gender Equity In Municipalities: Understanding Local Policy Priorities, Maria J. D’Agostino, Nicole M. Elias, Nicole Dimaria
Gender Equity In Municipalities: Understanding Local Policy Priorities, Maria J. D’Agostino, Nicole M. Elias, Nicole Dimaria
Publications and Research
The purpose of this research is to examine policy priorities of municipal legislation designed to promote gender equity. We ask the following research question: How does municipal policy address gender equity? To answer this question, we identify New York City legislation that targets gender equity passed under the DeBlasio administration (2014–2022). Using Atlas.TI, legislation is organized around The New York City Commission on Gender Equity’s goals to identify policy priorities. Our findings indicate that despite progressive policy efforts, policy priorities remain focused on gender stereotypes and long-standing issues, particularly sexual harassment and violence.

Do Schools Have The Capacity To Provide Free Meals To Every Student?, Michah W. Rothbart, Jeehee Han, Zac Reeves
Do Schools Have The Capacity To Provide Free Meals To Every Student?, Michah W. Rothbart, Jeehee Han, Zac Reeves
Population Health Research Brief Series
Over 20 million students nationally attend schools that offer universal free meals (UFM). Advocates argue that UFM increases school meal participation, decreases stigma, and reduces administrative costs for schools. Similarly, Breakfast in the Classroom (BIC) distributes breakfast to students after the bell, which increases participation and potentially decreases stigma. However, student participation remains far from universal. This brief summarizes the findings from a study using data from New York City (NYC) public schools between 2011-2014 to analyze the effectiveness of UFM and BIC at increasing student school breakfast and lunch participation in capacity-constrained schools. The authors find that both UFM …

Context: Obesity is prevalent in type 1 diabetes (T1D) and is problematic with higher risk for diabetes complications. It is unknown to what extent gut microbiome changes are associated with obesity and T1D.
Objective: This work aimed to describe the gut microbiome and microbial metabolite changes associated with obesity in T1D. We hypothesized statistically significant gut microbial and metabolite differences in lean T1D youth (body mass index [BMI]: 5%-< 85%) vs those with obesity (BMI: ≥95%).
Methods: We analyzed stool samples for gut microbial (using metagenomic shotgun sequencing) and short-chain fatty acid (SCFA) differences in lean (n = 27) and obese (n = 21) T1D youth in …
Louboutin Lawfare: Exploring Conceptions Of Sanctions' Utility Through Export Controls On Luxury Goods, Vinita R. Singh
Louboutin Lawfare: Exploring Conceptions Of Sanctions' Utility Through Export Controls On Luxury Goods, Vinita R. Singh
Northwestern University Law Review
There is widespread consensus amongst scholars that sanctions—the deliberate withdrawal of customary trade and financial relations—do not work. Despite this perception, states are deploying sanctions at an increasing rate. This Article explains this paradox by arguing the predominant notion of sanctions’ utility employed by scholars is unduly constrained, narrowly focusing on the ability of such measures to modify the behavior of sanctioned parties while disregarding the alternative benefits this instrument can deliver. To support this argument, this Article uses export controls on luxury goods deployed in connection with the Russo–Ukraine War as a case study. Under prevailing perceptions of sanctions’ …
The Healing Power Of Antitrust, Theodosia Stavroulaki
The Healing Power Of Antitrust, Theodosia Stavroulaki
Northwestern University Law Review
Millions of Americans live in hospital deserts—communities where people lack geographic access to hospitals and primary care physicians. People living in these deserts often miss doctor appointments, delay necessary care, and stop adhering to their treatment. In this way, hospital deserts exacerbate the health disparities plaguing America. This Article demonstrates that hospital deserts are not inevitable but the result of several business strategies—including noncompete agreements and merging with competitors—and antitrust enforcers’ unwillingness to recognize these harmful practices as antitrust violations. To cure the issue of hospital deserts, this Article makes three proposals. First, antitrust enforcers and the courts should expand …

The Role Of Film And Media In Cultivating Hope: A Conflict Resolution Platform, Lizyvette Ramos, Alexia Georgakopoulos
Peace and Conflict Studies Journal Conference
The Role of Film and Media in Cultivating Hope: A Conflict Resolution Platform: The role of film is that it not only provides humans with a visceral experience when we watch atrocities of war and injustices to innocent humans, but films also provide humans with a pause to consider alternatives as we reimagine conflict from a different trajectory with a future that includes peace and conflict transformation. This session will allow participants to gain insight into how to approach films and media from the positive side in that they offer people an opportunity to learn and that people themselves have …

“K-Pop In Public”: Vietnamese Youth Using Dance To Queer The Public Space, Ha Bich Dong, Thuy Bich Dong
Peace and Conflict Studies Journal Conference
In Vietnam, where public protests are criminalized (Kerkvliet, 2022), young people continue finding creative ways to advocate for their rights through different venues, particularly the arts. This research combines digital ethnography and duoethnography to examine K-pop dance covers in Vietnamese public spaces as a platform for youth to explore their gender identities, connect, and visibilize queerness.
K-pop is a music genre, pop culture, and cultural phenomenon that emerged in South Korea and has gained significant popularity and influence around the world (Aini, 2020). We, two researchers (one is a K-pop dancer), began the research by using digital ethnography (Zorn, & …

The transformative power of Peace Education cannot be undermined in the volatile era in which we live. Through cultivating knowledge, skills, attitudes, and values, Peace Education aims to shift the mindsets and behaviours of individuals and groups away from violence toward peace. In recent times, many youth have stepped up to lead Peace Education programmes, particularly targeting youth in their local communities. Their leadership often aligns with the 'Transformational Leadership' model, which fosters change in followers and society.
This research examines youth leaders in Non-Formal Peace Education in Post-War Sri Lanka, focusing on their adoption of the Transformational Leadership Model …

How To Become A Soldier In The Black Liberation Army: Sixteen Tomes, Tony Gaskew
How To Become A Soldier In The Black Liberation Army: Sixteen Tomes, Tony Gaskew
Peace and Conflict Studies Journal Conference
From 1970 to 1983, it is estimated that the Black Liberation Army (BLA), by way of armed resistance in the name of revolutionary justice, was responsible for expropriating the lives of dozens of police officers across the United States of America. Yes, as unbelievable, and as extra-terrestrial as it might sound today, there was a very brief period in U.S. history when there were consequences for indiscriminate acts of police violence against the Black community. However, in the fields of conflict resolution and peace studies, the BLA is invisible. As a Black man who was born and raised in the …

The Role Of U.S. Leadership In Resolving Indo-Pak Ensuring Rivalry, Abdul Sadiq Khan
Peace and Conflict Studies Journal Conference
The partition of British India in 1947 and the subsequent events caused a great deal of mutual mistrust that has persisted in the bilateral ties between Pakistan and India for seven decades. Post-Partition India inherited the state infrastructure of the British. Pakistan, on the other hand, has to build its state apparatus from the ground up. Indian leadership was certain that the nascent state of Pakistan would not survive and eventually reunify with India. The two countries are marked by the history of wars like in 1948, 1965, and 1999 over Jammu and Kashmir. Pakistan and India appear to be …

Peace and Conflict Studies Journal Conference
Abstract
The management of the herdsmen-farmers conflict-induced internal displacement in Benue State, Nigeria was characterized by the conflictual approach of the Benue State government and disagreement over displacement data by humanitarian agencies. The study explored the inter-connected relationship among stakeholders within the humanitarian eco-system and its effects on protection measures and durable solutions for the conflict-induced displacement crisis. The qualitative study was conducted among twenty-three adult females and males comprising internally displaced persons (IDPs), and humanitarian workers in the government and non-governmental humanitarian sectors. The study findings show that though the herdsmen-farmers conflict accounts for mass population displacement, loss of …

The Ukraine Crisis Narrative In Western Scholarship, Nikos Lekakis Dr, Alexander Katsaitis Dr
Peace and Conflict Studies Journal Conference
This paper examines the current Ukraine crisis that has deep geopolitical roots and often closely tied to the Euromaidan movement, outlining noticeable disagreements within the western academia regarding its interpretation by international relations theories and Russian history. On the one hand, institutional liberalists have been arguing that Russia’s aggression originates from Russian President Vladimir Putin, who has selected Ukraine, on the basis of its strategic location in central Europe, to be the beginning of an effort to reconstruct a new Soviet Union or at least to create a new sphere of influence in Russia’s near borders, bond European security …

The United States Of America V. Darren Seals, Tony Gaskew
Peace and Conflict Studies Journal Conference
The United States of America has an insatiable appetite for the corpses of Black men. Although only a silent whisper in the field of conflict resolution, Black men and boys face unprecedented levels of state-sponsored direct, structural, and metaphysical violence. Empirical evidence regarding disparities within the nuanced constructs of police killings, stop-and-frisk searches, educational attainment, unemployment, mortality rates, mass incarceration, and all forms of covert counterinsurgency (COIN) operations shows that Black men are without question, enemies of the state and what Leonard Harris calls the ultimate “necro-being.” You see, on September 6, 2016, 29-year-old Black male anti-police activist Darren Seals …

Workplace Conflict: Its Nature, Peculiarities, And Prevention, Ayo Ogunmolasuyi
Doctoral Dissertations and Projects
Workplace conflict can arise from negative attitudes, lazy coworkers, and stress. In most cases, conflict can be instigated by managers, supervisors, colleagues, or the employer's inability to meet specific demands or provide necessary resources. The aftermath of workplace conflict can be detrimental, destructive, and expensive when it escalates. Conflict can be a significant source of stress at work. The purpose of this phenomenological study was to explore the lived experiences of participants in regard to the nature of conflict, motivational tools, and strategies for conflict prevention. This study was directed by theoretical frameworks, including post-positivism, dual concern theory, social cognitive …
A Qualitative Phenomenological Study Of Military Veterans' Lived Experiences With The Cultural Transition Process: Navigating From The Military Culture To Civilian Life, Claudia Flores
Doctoral Dissertations and Projects
The purpose of this qualitative phenomenological study was to explore the process of cultural reintegration of service members from the military culture to the civilian culture, and to critically examine the implementation of existing Department of Defense (DoD) military transition policies designed to facilitate this reintegration. Policy implementation theory, pioneered by Jeffrey Pressman and Aaron Wildavsky, served as a framework to evaluate the efficacy of the DoD’s Transition Assistance Program (TAP) in supporting cultural reintegration. The study also drew upon the military transition theory, pioneered by Carl Castro and Sara Kintzle, which highlights the acculturation challenges faced by veterans, due …

How Military And Civilian Leaders At Forscom Develop Transformational And Sensegiving Skills To Motivate Brigade Combat Teams To Support The Army's Training Objectives, Lonnie Earnest Humphrey
Doctoral Dissertations and Projects
The purpose of this phenomenological study is to determine whether military and civilian leaders at the United States Army Force Command (FORSCOM) have transformational and sensegiving skills to influence Brigade Combat Teams to support the Army's Mission Essential Training Task (MET-T) and Warfighting Function (WFF) training objectives. The theory that guided this study is Maslow hierarchy of needs. Maslow’s hierarchy of needs is widely used in public organizations as a framework to assess employees’ needs. Maslow's hierarchy of needs theory suggested that subordinates are only motivated to support an organization's strategic goals once their psychological and physical needs are satisfied. …

The Influence Of The Un Watercourses Convention On The Development Of A Policy Design In The Nile River Basin, Zienab Ali Abdelhady
Theses and Dissertations
The adoption in 1997 of the United Nations Convention on the Law of the Non-navigational Uses of International Watercourses (UN Watercourses Convention or UNWC) marked a milestone in the codification and progressive development of international water law. Similarly, the signature in 2010 by the majority of the Nile Basin states of the Nile River Basin Cooperative Framework Agreement (CFA) was a major step towards a permanent legal and institutional framework as well as a significant shift from the currently applicable legal regime in the basin. The research concludes that the principles enshrined in the UNWC can assist future regional treaty …
Citizen Complaints Against Police And Police Education Level: A Quantitative Analysis, Robert S. Swenszkowski
Citizen Complaints Against Police And Police Education Level: A Quantitative Analysis, Robert S. Swenszkowski
Doctoral Dissertations and Projects
Complaints against police officers result from citizens expressing dissatisfaction with police officers’ conduct, which is perceived as unjust. Citizen dissatisfaction with police services or the imposition of authority can lead to the belief that such authority is illegitimate and unjust, which can decrease levels of confidence and cooperation from citizens. Questions have long existed about the need for individuals to have some level of higher education to be employed as police officers. Yet, a consistent standardization for the minimum educational requirements for police officers in the United States has not been embraced. Research and theory suggest that higher education yields …

Harm Reduction Without Supportive Policing: Experiences Of Drug Users In Nepal, Chandra Jha, Dennis Donovan
Journal of Social, Behavioral, and Health Sciences
This study explored the impact of drug criminalization and policing on harm reduction efforts in Nepal. In contexts marked by widespread corruption, drug criminalization often exacerbates the mistreatment by law enforcement of people who use drugs (PWUD), creating substantial barriers to their accessing harm reduction services. Utilizing a constructivist framework and a modified grounded theory approach, we conducted in-depth interviews with 20 PWUD to examine their experiences with drug use, interactions with police, and the consequent effects on harm reduction efforts. Three key themes emerged: the exploitation of PWUD as a significant source of income for corrupt police officers, the …

Lessons For Public Policy From The Covid-19 Pandemic, Olga Shvetsova
Political Science Faculty Scholarship
In the early 2020s, as the COVID-19 pandemic unfolded, governments, bureaucracies, and health practitioners around the globe faced unforeseen tasks and responsibilities. The novelty and intensity of the crisis spurred innovation and experimentation in public policy, health policy, and crisis management. However, the pandemic also revealed bottlenecks and adverse incentives within policy framework and healthcare systems. From this experience, critical lessons emerged: the paramount importance of swift and well-informed policy responses and the ability to optimize ongoing policy response as the crisis unfolds.
Policymaking And Pretrial Fairness: Evaluating Illinois' Ban On Cash Bail Beyond Chicago, Kaitlyn M. Sims
Policymaking And Pretrial Fairness: Evaluating Illinois' Ban On Cash Bail Beyond Chicago, Kaitlyn M. Sims
Global and Public Affairs: Faculty Scholarship
Over 400,000 people are incarcerated awaiting trial each day in the United States. Many of these individuals are held because they are unable to post cash bail, generating substantial economic inequality between those who are able to be released and those who must wait. Illinois's Pretrial Fairness Act (PFA) banned cash bail in 2023 to reduce economic inequity and remove judicial discretion in pretrial decisions. I use daily roster data from multiple suburban and rural Illinois jails and a regression-discontinuity-in-time (RDiT) approach to test for changes to jail composition after the law went into effect. Jail population sizes decreased, though …
