Covid Cover-Up: Secrecy, Censorship And Suppression During The Pandemic, Brian Martin
Covid Cover-Up: Secrecy, Censorship And Suppression During The Pandemic, Brian Martin
Secrecy and Society
During the height of the COVID-19 pandemic, most health authorities, governments, and mass media organizations presented a single official view concerning lockdowns, masking, distancing, and vaccines. The methods used against contrary views can be classified into four types: flooding, ignoring, censoring, and attacking. The method of information flooding involves presenting dominant views in a unified front, overwhelming contrary views by volume and consistency. The method of ignoring includes the absence of research on alternative approaches, failure to report on research contrary to orthodoxy, and not mentioning challenging views. Censoring involves active measures to prevent the circulation of contrary information and …

“Burned At The Stake”: Unpacking Disinformation In The Story Of A Coach Allegedly “Terminated” For Expressing Anti-Transgender Women Athlete Beliefs, Ellen J. Staurowsky
Journal of Issues in Intercollegiate Athletics
On August 29, 2023, a video testimony entitled ‘Burned at the Stake’: One NCAA Coach’s Battle to Protect Women’s Sport was released. The film was part of a “female athlete storytelling series” developed and funded by the Independent Women’s Forum (IWF) designed to support the IWF’s stated agenda to “fight to save women’s sports and counter the radical agenda that seeks to erase women” by allowing transgender girls and women on teams that match their identities. The central figure in the video is Kim Russell, then head women’s lacrosse coach at NCAA Division III Oberlin College, who claimed her right …

Accessible Bike Map Design: A Review And Critique Of Portland’S Bike Maps, Zachary Cheyney
Accessible Bike Map Design: A Review And Critique Of Portland’S Bike Maps, Zachary Cheyney
Geography Masters Research Papers
Urban bike maps can serve as key tools for route planning and navigation for prospective cyclists, providing both general information (such as landmarks and natural features) and cycling specific information (such as bike lane infrastructure types and cycling amenities). Despite this, there is little professional guidance or academic research on best practices for bike map design. Potential guidance should consider the full range of potential cyclists, including disabled cyclists who have often been left out of cycling policy discussions. In this paper, I begin by discussing 3 case studies on participatory mapping methodologies with disabled participants in order to generate …

Active Transportation Data Fusion: Incorporating Big Data To Estimate Volumes, Joeseph Broach, Sirisha Kothuri, Nathan Mcneil
PSU Transportation Seminars
Planners and decision-makers have increasingly voiced a need for network-wide estimates of bicycling and walking. Such volume estimates have for decades informed motorized planning and analysis but have only recently become feasible for non-motorized travel modes. Recently, new sources of activity data have emerged derived primarily from GPS-based smartphone location data, both app-based and passively collected. The project team has led several research projects aimed at evaluating and integrating the emerging sources with conventional demand data, including observed bicycle and pedestrian counts, to assess the value added of various emerging sources and the potential for estimating network-wide volumes. This presentation …

African Journal of Criminology and Justice Studies
Reinventing Issues of Law and Justice, Counterterrorism, Correctional Matters in African Criminology and Criminal Justice The authors of this Issue examined burning and contemporary criminal justice matters affecting Africa. While these articles focus on Nigeria, they generally have legal and criminal justice implications for Africa. Africa still faces many dilemmas in finding ways to eliminate terrorism from below and above, causing enormous havoc for political, economic, cultural, and religious instabilities. The correctional systems in some of the African States have also failed in sustaining systems of correctional facilities that respect the tenets of human rights. Additionally, businesses and companies hesitate …

Human Rights Violations In Counter-Terrorism Efforts: A Qualitative Study Of Victims Experiences In Nigeria, Ifeoma E. Okoye, Pius Adejoh
African Journal of Criminology and Justice Studies
Abstract
This study explores the complex nature of human rights violations in the context of countering terrorism in Nigeria. Consequent to the persistent threat of terrorism, especially since the 2009 Boko Haram terrorist' attacks, the Nigerian government has enforced several measures in order to provide national security and save its citizens from terrorist attacks. However, the implementation of these counterterrorism strategies has constituted human rights abuses. This study examined the complicated human rights violations that occurred in the government's counterterrorism framework by utilizing a detailed review of scholarly literature, legislations, media reports, United Nations' provisions, findings from non-governmental human rights …

Special Delivery: Special District Use Of Collaboration To Solve Challenges, Kelly Irene Fahl Sherbo
Dissertations and Theses
As the special district sector continues to increase in number across the U.S., understanding their role in public governance increases in value both to practitioners and academia alike. The state of the academic literature on special districts does not yet reflect the large size and importance of the sector and has been severely limited by available data, mainly coming from the U.S. Census Bureau. Existing research has focused on broad descriptions of the field of special districts, some studies focus on policy and political effects; but scant research analyzes behavior within and among special districts, particularly with their public entity …

Case Analysis: Process & Industrial Development (P&Id) Vs. The Federal Republic Of Nigeria (2023), Kiiza Smith, Renu Pal Sood, Malvika Gupta, Averi Bhimta
African Journal of Criminology and Justice Studies
Abstract
This article discusses the case between Process and Industrial Development Limited vs. The Federal Republic of Nigeria (2023). Arbitration is relatively new to Nigeria and arguably Africa as a whole. Nigerian Judges and the populace are considered inexperienced and may barely have sufficient knowledge on Arbitration. It is also difficult to find lawyers that are grounded in Arbitration. Hence, arbitration cases are not often decided in Nigeria. It is often said that “Nigeria does not have a fighting chance.” This means that when it comes to Arbitration, Nigeria simply does not have the resources and manpower to handle and …
Climate Change Policies And Good Governance In Egypt, Mahmoud Elshourbagy
Climate Change Policies And Good Governance In Egypt, Mahmoud Elshourbagy
Theses and Dissertations
Egypt recognizes the impacts of climate change and is particularly vulnerable because of its high-density population, economic burden and geographical location. In response, Egypt established National Climate Change Council in 2016. In 2022, the council issued “National Climate Change Strategy 2050” to integrate and align the efforts of government bodies to adapt and mitigate climate change risks. One of the strategic goals of “National Climate Change Strategy 2050” is to enhance climate governance in Egypt as a critical tool. This study attempts to evaluate climate change policies in the context of good governance by using a tool developed by World …
How Does The Earned Income Tax Credit (Eitc) Impact Time Spent Assisting Adults?, Anna Wiersma Strauss
How Does The Earned Income Tax Credit (Eitc) Impact Time Spent Assisting Adults?, Anna Wiersma Strauss
Population Health Research Brief Series
Unpaid caregiving for adults is crucial to maintaining health, independence, and well-being at older ages. In their working years, caregivers potentially face trade-offs between unpaid caregiving and paid work. Poor households face more costly tradeoffs between paid work and caregiving because the Earned Income Tax Credit (EITC) – one of the nation’s largest antipoverty programs for families with children – requires recipients to work and provides benefits based on the level of earnings. This brief summarizes the findings of a study that uses data from the 2003-2019 American Time Use Survey (ATUS) to examine the effect of the EITC on …
Effects Of Foreign Aid On Developing Countries: Case Of Turkana County, Kenya, Baraka M. Akeyo
Effects Of Foreign Aid On Developing Countries: Case Of Turkana County, Kenya, Baraka M. Akeyo
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
Despite substantial foreign aid investments in road construction projects in Turkana County, Kenya, anticipated benefits of improved access to social facilities, economic development, and rural and urban growth have not been fully realized. This study involved assessing the impact of foreign aid for road construction in Turkana County. Grounded in the social constructivism perspective, the research acknowledges subjective realities shaped by individual and societal experiences. The agency theory served as the theoretical foundation, framing the donor-recipient relationship as one where donors act as principals imposing conditions on recipient communities as agents. The study addressed the central research question: What is …
The Market Value Of Partisan Balance, Brian D. Feinstein, Daniel J. Hemel
The Market Value Of Partisan Balance, Brian D. Feinstein, Daniel J. Hemel
Northwestern University Law Review
For the past century, Delaware’s constitution has provided that no more than a bare majority of judges on the state’s courts may hail from the same political party. Some scholars and jurists theorize that Delaware’s commitment to a politically balanced judiciary increases the state’s attractiveness to out-of-state corporations and adds value to Delaware-chartered firms. These claims echo a larger literature in law and the social sciences positing that ideological diversity improves decisional quality. Recently, a series of federal court decisions in the case of Adams v. Carney put these claims to the test. In December 2017, a federal district court …
Racial Discrimination In Retailers' Willingness To Accept Returns: A Field Study, Meirav Furth-Matzkin
Racial Discrimination In Retailers' Willingness To Accept Returns: A Field Study, Meirav Furth-Matzkin
Northwestern University Law Review
Black Americans have long faced discriminatory treatment while shopping in retail establishments, including, most notably, being subjected to increased surveillance, inconsistent pricing, and inferior customer service. Little attention, however, has been paid to other post-purchase aspects of retail transactions. Specifically, do Black Americans receive the same treatment as white customers when it comes to performing sellers’ formal policies or contracts? While it is understood that salespeople are often given discretion to deviate from standard form contracts, sometimes departing from the literal terms to satisfy consumers, there has been a notable absence of systematic exploration into how salespeople exercise this authority …
Statutes And Special Interests, Kirsten Matoy Carlson
Statutes And Special Interests, Kirsten Matoy Carlson
Northwestern University Law Review
Who really decides what statutes say? Most Americans think that special interests play an outsized role in our lawmaking processes. Yet empirical studies have produced little evidence that special interests get everything, or even most of, what they ask for from Congress. This Article takes an innovative new approach to tackling the difficult question of how advocates influence legislation. It presents the first comprehensive empirical study of how advocates influence the law through amendments in the legislative process. The Article analyzes an original dataset of 2,137 witnesses and their testimony at referral hearings on 108 Indian-related bills in the 97th …
How Insider-Led Processes Lead To Localization: The Case Of Digital Technology And Humanitarian Protection, Oliver Kaplan, Emily Paddon Rhoads
How Insider-Led Processes Lead To Localization: The Case Of Digital Technology And Humanitarian Protection, Oliver Kaplan, Emily Paddon Rhoads
Global and Public Affairs: Faculty Scholarship
The humanitarian sector has been increasingly concerned with localizing its activities—devolving capacity, power, and decision-making authority to the local communities and organizations that are the frequent recipients of its assistance. However, the mere “outsider-led” provision of assistance to local actors is not itself sufficient to empower them. In- stead, we argue that “insider-led,” locally initiated processes can be an effective approach to localization. We identify how such shifts can occur and distinguish three different configurations of “insider-led” processes: Autonomous Adopters, Balanced Partners, and Exporting Entrepreneurs. We examine “insider-led” localization in the context of the use of Information and Communication Technologies …
