This research seeks to analyze Thai foreign policy’s posture toward the United States and China amid the competition of vaccine diplomacy in the Southeast Asia region between 2020 and 2021. This research focuses on the conduct of Thai foreign policy by applying ‘hedging strategy’ as a main theoretical framework in explaining how Thailand managed to diversify its COVID-19 vaccine portfolios, in order to have a clearer understanding of whether Bangkok can perform a well-crafted hedging strategy or Thai’s traditional diplomacy has lost ground in its default setting. เสนาภิวัฒน์ของระบบกฎหมายไทยในช่วงระบอบรัฐประหาร 2557 - 2562, ดวงกมล ประดิษฐ์ด้วง

การวิจัยนี้มีวัตถุประสงค์เพื่อศึกษาการบังคับใช้กฎหมายของคณะรักษาความสงบแห่งชาติ (คสช.) ในปี พ.ศ.2557 – 2562 ก่อนเลือกตั้ง ตามหลักเสรีประชาธิปไตย ตลอดจนศึกษาการวางฐานทางรัฐธรรมนูญและกฎหมายในการสืบทอดอำนาจของคณะรักษาความสงบแห่งชาติ วิธีการศึกษาดำเนินการใช้ระเบียบวิธีวิจัยเชิงคุณภาพ โดยการค้นคว้ารวบรวมข้อมูลทางเอกสารทางรัฐศาสตร์และนิติศาสตร์ จากแหล่งข้อมูลในการศึกษามาจากบทบัญญัติกฎหมาย หนังสือ บทความวารสาร งานวิจัยวิทยานิพนธ์ ข้อมูลสถิติหรือเอกสารเผยแพร่ทางราชการหรือหน่วยงานที่เกี่ยวข้อง ข้อมูลสารสนเทศจากเครือข่ายอินเตอร์เน็ต ตลอดจนการศึกษากฎหมาย รวมถึงการสัมภาษณ์เชิงลึก เพื่อนำมาวิเคราะห์ข้อมูลและสามารถนำมาปรับใช้กับงานวิจัยชิ้นนี้ ผลการวิจัยสรุปว่า คณะรัฐประหารรักษาความสงบแห่งชาติ (คสช.) พยายามใช้กฎหมายฉบับต่าง ๆ ดังนี้ ประการแรก การใช้กฎหมายทั่วไป ประการที่สอง การใช้รัฐธรรมนูญแห่งราชอาณาจักรไทย (ฉบับชั่วคราว) พุทธศักราช 2557 และประการสุดท้าย การใช้รัฐธรรมนูญแห่งราชอาณาจักรไทย พุทธศักราช 2560 เพื่อเป็นเครื่องมือในการเข้ามาควบคุมทางการเมือง ซึ่งไม่สอดคล้องกับหลักเสรีประชาธิปไตย อีกทั้ง ยังส่งผลต่อการวางรากฐานค้ำจุนให้กับระบอบรัฐประหารในระยะยาวอีกด้วย การวิจัยนี้จึงเสนอให้มีแนวทางในการแก้ไขปัญหาการใช้กฎหมายของคณะรัฐประหารดังกล่าวให้มีความสอดคล้องกับหลักเสรีประชาธิปไตย โดยอาศัยหลักประชาธิปไตยและหลักนิติธรรมควบคู่กัน ในลักษณะเป็นกลไกที่ส่งเสริมซึ่งกันและกันคือ การใช้กฎหมายเป็นกรอบในการควบคุมและจำกัดการใช้อำนาจ (rule of law) ของคณะรัฐประหารทุกช่วงเวลา เพื่อป้องกันการเข้ามารัฐประหาร รวมถึงคุ้มครองสิทธิและเสรีภาพของประชาชนไม่ให้ถูกละเมิดจากการใช้อำนาจดังกล่าว ฉะนั้น หากประเทศไทยสามารถทำให้หลักการนิติธรรมสามารถเกิดได้อย่างเป็นรูปธรรม หลักการดังกล่าวนั้นก็จะช่วยส่งเสริมระบอบประชาธิปไตยสามารถทำงานตรวจสอบและถ่วงดุลอำนาจได้อย่างมีประสิทธิภาพ

การทำสงครามต่อต้านการก่อความไม่สงบของอังกฤษในมลายา ได้รับการยอมรับจากผู้ที่ศึกษาเรื่องสงครามต่อต้านการก่อความไม่สงบในปัจจุบันว่า เป็นการรับมือกับสงครามนอกแบบที่มีประสิทธิภาพ เนื่องจากรัฐบาลอังกฤษในมลายารู้จักปรับตัวและสร้างวิธีคิดชุดใหม่ ที่มุ่งให้ความสำคัญกับนโยบายทางการเมืองเป็นหลัก วิทยานิพนธ์นี้วิเคราะห์ให้เห็นว่าการทำปฏิบัติการสงครามจิตวิทยาในมลายาถือเป็นเงื่อนไขทางการเมืองอันโดดเด่นที่ส่งผลให้รัฐบาลอังกฤษได้รับชัยชนะในสงครามดังกล่าว ผ่านแนวคิดการทำปฏิบัติการสงครามจิตวิทยาของ เซอร์ โรเบิร์ต ทอมสัน บทเรียนสำคัญจากการทำสงครามต่อต้านการก่อความไม่สงบในมลายา ชี้ให้เห็นว่าการใช้กำลังไม่ใช่ทางออกสำหรับการทำสงคราม หากแต่เป็น “การขจัดองค์กรของศัตรู” ผ่านปฏิบัติการสงครามจิตวิทยา ในขณะเดียวกันสงครามในมลายายังพิสูจน์ให้เห็นว่า มาตรการทางจิตวิทยา อย่างการโฆษณาชวนเชื่อในรูปแบบการใช้ใบปลิวประชาสัมพันธ์นโยบายการมอบตัวและข้อเสนอของรัฐบาล เป็นเครื่องมือที่สามารถโน้มน้าวให้กลุ่มผู้เห็นต่างจากรัฐเข้ามามอบตัวและให้ความร่วมมือกับรัฐบาลเป็นจำนวนมาก จนสามารถทำลายองค์กรของศัตรูได้อย่างมีนัยสำคัญ กระทั่งจำนวนลดน้อยลงมาก จนกองกำลังที่เหลือต้องถอยออกไปยังเขตชายแดนมลายา-ไทย ทำให้รัฐบาลอังกฤษสามารถยุติสงครามดังกล่าวได้ภายในเวลาเพียง 12 ปี

การเกิดขึ้นของโรคระบาดส่งผลสำคัญต่อระบบสาธารณสุขของประเทศแคนาดาในฐานะที่เป็นสถาบันหนึ่งที่คงอยู่มาอย่างยาวนาน อีกทั้งยังเป็นปัจจัยสำคัญที่เข้ามาสั่นคลอนความมีเสถียรภาพของระบบสาธาณสุขซึ่งหยั่งรากลึกเชิงโครงสร้างมาจนถึงปัจจุบันส่งผลให้สถาบันดังกล่าวต้องเผชิญกับความเปลี่ยนแปลงเพื่อรับมือกับโรคระบาดที่เกิดขึ้น โดยการเปลี่ยนแปลงที่เกิดขึ้นภายในระบบสาธารณสุขของแคนาดาเป็นการเปลี่ยนแปลงแบบค่อยเป็นค่อยไปซึ่งเน้นไปที่การเปลี่ยนแปลงเชิงนโยบายเพื่อเตรียมพร้อมตอบสนองต่อภาวะฉุกเฉิน โดยเรียกการเปลี่ยนแปลงดังกล่าวว่า ‘การเปลี่ยนแปลงแบบเบี่ยงเบน (Institutional Drift)’ การเปลี่ยนแปลงเช่นนี้สะท้อนให้เห็นว่าระบบสาธารณสุขของประเทศแคนาดาไม่มีความพร้อมในการรับมือกับโรคระบาดมาตั้งแต่ต้นและทำได้เพียงรับมือสถานการณ์แบบเฉพาะหน้าเท่านั้น บทความนี้ทำการศึกษาระบบสาธารณสุขของประเทศแคนาดาผ่านกรอบทฤษฎีเส้นทางการพัฒนาของสถาบัน (Path dependence) และการเปลี่ยนแปลงเชิงสถาบัน (Institutional change) โดยมีการเปรียบเทียบการรับมือกับโรคระบาด 2 โรค ในช่วงเวลาที่ต่างกันระหว่างโรคไข้หวัดใหญ่สายพันธุ์ใหม่ชนิดเอ (H1N1) และโรคติดเชื้อไวรัสโคโรน่า (COVID-19)

วิทยานิพนธ์ฉบับนี้เป็นการศึกษาเชิงคุณภาพ ศึกษาประเด็นเรื่องความยุติธรรมจากกรณีศึกษาการกู้ภัยถ้ำหลวง พ.ศ. 2561 ศึกษาผ่านกรอบแนวคิด "ความยุติธรรมกรุณา" ในการตอบวัตถุประสงค์ 3 ข้อคือ 1. เพื่อศึกษาประเด็นเรื่องความยุติธรรม/ไม่ยุติธรรมที่ปรากฎจากการกู้ภัยถ้ำหลวง 2. เพื่อศึกษาความสัมพันธ์ระหว่างความยุติธรรมกับความกรุณาที่ปรากฎจากการกู้ภัยถ้ำหลวง 3. เพื่อศึกษาความสัมพันธ์ระหว่างความยุติธรรมกับความกรุณาในเชิงทฤษฎี ผลการศึกษาตอบวัตถุประสงค์ 3 ข้อดังนี้ 1. การกู้ภัยถ้ำหลวงก่อให้เกิดคำถามเกี่ยวกับ "ความไม่ยุติธรรมเปรียบเทียบ" 2. ผู้ประสบภัยถ้ำหลวงได้รับความช่วยเหลืออย่างมหาศาลทั้งในด้านทรัพยากรบุคคลและทรัพยากรวัตถุ ซึ่งถือว่าผู้ประสบภัยได้รับ "ความกรุณา" อย่างสูงจากการกู้ภัย ส่วนผู้ประสบภัยกรณีอื่นเช่นกรณีน้ำท่วมจังหวัดอุบลราชธานีในปี พ.ศ.2562 ได้รับการช่วยเหลือตามมาตรฐานที่ถูกต้องแล้ว แต่ก็เกิดคำถามเรื่อง "ความไม่ยุติธรรมเปรียบเทียบ" ในแง่ระดับความช่วยเหลือ 3. แนวคิดเรื่อง "ความยุติธรรมกรุณา" อธิบายว่า "ความไม่ยุติธรรมเปรียบเทียบ" เป็นสิ่งที่ยอมรับได้ในกรณีของการช่วยเหลือผู้ประสบภัย ด้วยเงื่อนไขสำคัญคือ 1. ความจำเป็นของผู้ประสบภัยในการได้รับความช่วยเหลือ 2. การช่วยเหลือต้องสร้างผลดีต่อสังคม มากกว่าสร้างผลเสียต่อสังคม 3. ผู้ไม่ได้รับความกรุณา จำเป็นต้องได้รับความยุติธรรมในตัวเอง

ความพยายามให้เกิดการบริหารจัดการสาธารณภัยอย่างเป็นระบบเป็นหนึ่งในประเด็นสำคัญที่รัฐบาลวางแนวทางไว้ในการปฏิรูประบบราชการเมื่อปี พ.ศ. 2545 และนำไปสู่การก่อตั้งกรมป้องกันและบรรเทาสาธารณภัยโดยมีภารกิจหน้าที่ในการจัดทำแผนแม่บท วางมาตรการ ส่งเสริมสนับสนุน การป้องกัน บรรเทาและฟื้นฟูจากสาธารณภัย บทความวิจัยนี้มีวัตถุประสงค์เพื่อศึกษาวิเคราะห์ปัญหากลไกการบริหารจัดการสาธารณภัยในระดับพื้นที่และเสนอตัวแบบการบริหารจัดการที่เหมาะสม จากการวิจัยกรณีศึกษา 8 จังหวัด พบข้อจำกัดของการบริหารจัดการทั้งในแง่ระบบงาน กลไก และโครงสร้าง  ผลการศึกษานำมาซึ่งข้อเสนอในการกำหนดกลไกการบริหารจัดการสาธารณภัยในระดับพื้นที่ 3 รูปแบบ ได้แก่ รูปแบบสำนักงานป้องกันและบรรเทาสาธารณภัยจังหวัด รูปแบบสำนักงานป้องกันและบรรเทาสาธารณภัยกลุ่มอำเภอ และรูปแบบสำนักงานป้องกันและบรรเทาสาธารณภัยอำเภอ โดยรูปแบบที่เหมาะสมกับพื้นที่ตามหลักการบริหารจัดการเป็นรูปแบบสำนักงานป้องกันและบรรเทาสาธารณภัยกลุ่มอำเภอ เพราะมีความชัดเจนในโครงสร้างการตอบสนองภารกิจเชิงความเชี่ยวชาญและฐานะของหน่วยงานเชิงอำนาจหน้าที่  อย่างไรก็ตาม  ไม่มีรูปแบบใดดีที่สุดเพราะการประยุกต์ใช้ยังเกี่ยวพันกับสภาพพื้นที่และการเข้าถึง ลักษณะสาธารณภัย ประชากรและขอบเขตการปกครอง และศักยภาพของเครือข่าย  นอกจากนี้การประยุกต์ใช้ยังต้องอาศัยขีดความสามารถของหน่วยปฏิบัติด้วย  นำไปสู่ข้อเสนอแนะว่าขีดความสามารถของผู้จัดการสาธารณภัยเป็นเงื่อนไขของการพัฒนาการบริหารจัดการสาธารณภัย

แม้ว่าการดำเนินกิจกรรมต่าง ๆ ในชีวิตสมัยใหม่ของผู้คนทั่วไปจะมีคำพยากรณ์อากาศของกรมอุตุนิยมวิทยากำกับแนวเป็นทาง ทว่า เหตุใดเหล่าพ่อค้าแม่ขายในตลาดนัดแห่งหนึ่งของกรุงเทพมหานครกลับปฏิเสธคำพยากรณ์ดังกล่าวของทางการและหันไปเชื่อถือปากคำของเจ้าเข้าทรงคนหนึ่งซึ่งช่วยบอกพวกเขาว่าสภาพอากาศในแต่ละวันจะเป็นอย่างไรแทน บทความพยายามตอบคำถามนี้ผ่านการแกะรอยสถานการณ์ที่เกิดขึ้นและให้ข้อเสนอว่าการหันไปเชื่อถือคำพยากรณ์อากาศของเจ้าเข้าทรงเป็นหนทางที่ผู้ค้าในตลาดนัดเข้าถึงอำนาจในอีกวิถีหนึ่งสำหรับต่อสู้ดิ้นรนกับกรงขังของความรู้ อันถูกสร้างขึ้นจากปฏิบัติการทางวิทยาศาสตร์และสิทธิอำนาจของหน่วยงานทางการ อีกทั้งยังครอบทับความเป็นไปได้ในการดำเนินกิจกรรมทางเศรษฐกิจของพวกเขา นอกจากนี้บทความยังอภิปรายมุมมองเชิงแนวคิดและทฤษฎีผ่านการทำงานภาคสนามและการทบทวนวรรณกรรมเพื่อชี้ให้เห็นถึงรูปลักษณ์อันผสมผเสของสิ่งต่าง ๆ อันนำไปสู่คำพยากรณ์อากาศทั้งในเชิงวิทยาศาสตร์และเชิงความเชื่อเหมือน ๆ กัน

One, Bong Joon-ho’s f ilm Parasite (2019) is not simply about class inequality but more importantly addresses the question “what is (not) to be done?”.To appreciate this point, we have to investigate it alongside Bong’s previous f ilms, especially Snowpiercer (2013) and Okja (2017). Although these three f ilms possess vastly different storylines,they all wrestle with this burning political question from different angles: seizure of state power and revolution (Snowpiercer), “folk politics” (Okja), and neoliberal privatization of social problems (Parasite). บทความนี้ศึกษาปัจจัยที่ส่งผลต่อความสำเร็จในการสร้างความเป็นปึกแผ่นให้กับประชาธิปไตยในเกาหลีใต้ โดยในการศึกษาจะใช้นิยามขั้นต่ำของการสร้างความมั่นคงให้กับประชาธิปไตยที่ให้ความสำคัญกับประเด็นคำถามที่ว่าประชาธิปไตยจะมีเสถียรภาพได้อย่างไร หรืออะไรคือเงื่อนไขที่เกื้อหนุนให้ประเทศประชาธิปไตยใหม่ไม่หันย้อนกลับไปสู่ระบอบเผด็จการอำนาจนิยม ข้อถกเถียงสำคัญของงานนี้คือการควบคุมโดยพลเรือนเป็นปัจจัยสำคัญที่สุดที่ทำให้ประชาธิปไตยในเกาหลีใต้มีความมั่นคงและยั่งยืน การดำเนินการดังกล่าวเป็นการปลดชนวนภัยคุกคามต่อเสถียรภาพของประชาธิปไตยที่น่าเกรงขามมากที่สุด ในกรณีของเกาหลีใต้ กระบวนการสถาปนาการควบคุมกองทัพโดยพลเรือนเริ่มต้นจากการปลดย้ายกลุ่มนายทหารที่ยุ่งเกี่ยวกับการเมืองและและการขับเคลื่อนการปฏิรูปภาคความมั่นคงที่มุ่งเน้นหลักความเป็นมืออาชีพของกองทัพ  ความพยายามที่ผลักดันทหารกลับเข้าสู่กรมกองนี้ได้แผ้วถางทางให้กับรัฐบาลพลเรือนชุดถัดมาให้ดำเนินการขับเคลื่อนการปฏิรูประลอกใหม่ที่มุ่งเน้นทิศทางของการทำให้กองทัพมีความเป็นพลเรือนมากขึ้น ตัวอย่างเช่น การเพิ่มจำนวนเจ้าหน้าที่พลเรือนในกระทรวงการป้องกันประเทศ และการสนับสนุนค่านิยมแบบประชาธิปไตยในกองทัพ อาทิ หลักสิทธิมนุษยชน เป็นต้น

บทความชิ้นนี้ค้นคว้าเกี่ยวกับการเจรจาโดยผู้นำลาวระดับสูงกับ จปร.7 ซึ่งในกรณีนี้มี พลเอก  ชวลิต ยงใจยุทธ ทำหน้าที่ประสานความสัมพันธ์กับเจ้าสุภานุวงศ์ สู่ข้อตกลงหยุดยิง เมื่อวันที่ 19 กุมภาพันธ์ พ.ศ. 2531 การศึกษาพบว่าปัญหาความสัมพันธ์ระหว่างประเทศระหว่างไทย-ลาว ในกรณีศึกษานี้มีที่มาจากปัญหาดังนี้ 1. ความสัมพันธ์ระหว่างประเทศไทยกับประเทศลาวและการเมืองภายในไทยและลาว 2. เศรษฐกิจชายแดนที่มีการทำสัมปทานไม้โดยบริษัทไทย 3. สนธิสัญญาไม่เสมอภาค ซึ่งต้องร่วมกันแก้ไข 4.  สงครามเย็นเริ่มส่อเค้าว่าจะสิ้นสุด ซึ่งจะส่งผลให้มีการเปลี่ยนขั้วการเมืองระหว่างประเทศตามมา 5. ยุทธศาสตร์ทางทหารต่อ อดีต ผ.ก.ค. “หมู่บ้านจัดตั้งฯ” 6. ตัวแสดง “สงครามสามหมู่บ้าน” เข้ามามีบทบาทซ้ำใน “บ้านร่มเกล้า” 7. ผลการสืบสิทธิ์ ตีความสนธิสัญญาไทย-ฝรั่งเศส ค.ศ. 1907 การตีความแผนที่ตามสนธิสัญญาสยาม-ฝรั่งเศส ค.ศ. 1907 ที่แตกต่างกับปัจจุบัน

บทความวิจัยนี้มีวัตถุประสงค์เพื่อศึกษาพัฒนาการของอิสลามการเมืองในมาเลเซียและศึกษาถึงผลกระทบจากการใช้อิสลามการเมืองในประเทศมาเลเซียต่อการกำหนดทิศทางการวางรากฐานทางการเมืองโดยยึดแนวทางอิสลาม โดยได้ทำการวิเคราะห์ข้อมูลบนสมมติฐานที่ว่าศาสนาอิสลามและแนวคิดอิสลามนั้นมีอิทธิพลต่อพัฒนาการด้านการเมืองในมาเลเซียหลังได้รับเอกราชอย่างไร ปัจจัยภายนอกอย่างสภาวการณ์การเปลี่ยนแปลงของโลกมุสลิมจากภูมิภาคอื่น ๆ นั้นส่งผลต่อการเป็นอิสลามการเมืองในมาเลเซียอย่างไร ตลอดจนมีการนำอิสลามมาบูรณาการปรับใช้อย่างไรในบริบททางการเมืองและเหตุการณ์ในแต่ละยุคสมัย ผลการวิจัยพบว่ามาเลเซียได้นำเอาอิสลามเข้ามามีส่วนกำหนดอนาคตของประเทศและอัตลักษณ์ของชาติ เพื่อสร้างพลังทางการเมืองที่เข้มแข็ง ทั้งนี้มาเลเซียยังได้ใช้สถานะความเป็นรัฐมุสลิมที่ใช้กฎหมายชารีอะห์และความเป็นหนึ่งเดียวของประชาชาติมุสลิมในการเมืองระหว่างประเทศ เพื่อช่วยเหลือและแก้ไขปัญหาที่เกิดขึ้นต่อโลกมุสลิมจนได้รับความไว้เนื้อเชื่อใจจากนานาประเทศและถือเป็นการสร้างเกียรติแก่ประเทศชาติ ถือเป็นความสำเร็จของมาเลเซียที่ได้นำเอาอิสลามมาใช้ในทางการเมืองการปกครองนับตั้งแต่ได้รับเอกราช

บทความนี้มีวัตถุประสงค์เพื่ออรรถาธิบายความเป็นมาของ node หน่วยประสานเครือข่ายงานด้านการพัฒนาสังคมในประเทศไทยและอภิปรายใน 3 ประเด็น คือ 1. บทบาทและรูปแบบการทำงาน 2. องค์ประกอบด้านคุณลักษณะของ node ประกอบด้วยคุณลักษณะด้านความรู้ ทักษะ และเจตคติต่อการทำงานพัฒนาสังคม และ 3. ความสัมพันธ์ของ node กับงานพัฒนาสังคมตามทฤษฎีเครือข่าย-ผู้กระทำการ ผลการถอดบทเรียนการทำงานของหน่วยปฏิบัติการวิจัยเพื่อการพัฒนาด้านเด็กและเยาวชน พบว่า 1. node มีบทบาทเป็นผู้สร้างการเปลี่ยนแปลงทางสังคมโดยมีรูปแบบการทำงานแบบประสานความร่วมมือกับองค์กรทางสังคม 2. node ต้องมีคุณลักษณะด้านความรู้ที่หลากหลายทั้งกว้างและลึกเชิงประเด็น มีทักษะการสื่อสารเพื่อสร้างพื้นที่การมีส่วนร่วม และมีอุดมการณ์ในการทำงานเพื่อส่งเสริมสิทธิมนุษยชนและสันติภาพ และ 3. ความสัมพันธ์สัมพัทธ์ตามแนวคิดทฤษฎีเครือข่าย-ผู้กระทำการที่ node สร้างผ่านการทำงานพัฒนาสังคมทำให้เกิดปฏิสัมพันธ์ข้ามองค์กรและสานเครือข่ายงานด้านการพัฒนาสังคมให้ขยายออกไปในแนวระนาบจนเกิดการเปลี่ยนแปลงที่ยั่งยืนในระดับปัจเจกชน พื้นที่ ตลอดจนโครงสร้างทางสังคม

In this thesis, I demonstrate how the question of ethics in aerial bombardment has been evolving and transforming since its inception at the beginning of the twentieth century to contemporary targeted killings/assassinations by drones. I interact with early airpower theories from Douhet, Trenchard, Mitchell, and contemporary air tactics in order to establish a crucial sequence between these early theories and practices of aerial violence and modern ones conducted by armed drones. I show how the evolution of aerial bombardment challenged, influenced, and transformed essentials of conventional warfare, as well as dispersed boundaries between combatants and non-combatants. This dissertation examines the effect of political polarization on legislative productivity and policymaking in the United States Congress. As the ideological distance between Republicans and Democrats increases, both parties face pressure to obstruct the legislative process in order to defeat their opponent’s policy proposals. This leads to legislative gridlock and alters the means by which Congress can perform its legislative duties. The purpose of this study is to apply punctuated equilibrium theory to better understand the development of energy policies in the European Parliament and in the Lithuanian Parliament – Seimas. The 2016 election was the first presidential election following the landmark Shelby County v. Holder (2013) case that invalidated Section 4(b) of the Voting Rights Act of 1965. The decision in Shelby meant that certain jurisdictions with histories of racial discrimination no longer needed permission or “preclearance” from the federal government before making changes to election administration procedures. Perhaps not coincidentally, voting jurisdictions across the United States also saw a record number of polling place closures - especially in formerly preclearance areas. Democracy is generally considered to be a core element of cooperatives. However, other than elected boards of directors, it appears to play little part in either the governance or operations of most cooperatives. Two challenges to democracy are identified. One is the idea that cooperatives will tend to lose their democratic character over time. The other is that many cooperatives are founded primarily for economic reasons, and democracy is a second-order concern. Partisanship and news source attribution may influence perceived media bias and trust in COVID-19 information. This study aimed to explore how the similarity liking effect relates to political identity and perceived credibility. Our main hypothesis was that individuals would find news sources that shared their political affiliation as more trustworthy than other news sources. To test our hypothesis, 216 undergraduate students participated in a study that measured participants’ trustworthiness of a news article with randomized source attribution from a liberal, conservative, and neutral source. Humanist ideas in education have been promoted by both Western thinkers and classical wisdom texts of Asia. Exploring this connection, I examine the educational philosophy of an iconic ancient Tamil (Indian) text, the Thiruvalluvar Kural, by juxtaposing it with a contemporary humanist classic, Paulo Freire’s Pedagogy of the Oppressed. As this comparative study reveals, both texts offer humanist visions of relevance to education, politics, and society. Notably, however, the Kural takes what might be described as a more mainstream humanist stance vis-à-vis Freire’s radical humanist approach. While many scholars have analysed neo-liberalism (i.e. market globalism) as an ideology of globalization, much less is known about alternative and emerging ideologies that challenge neoliberalism on a global scale. Addressing this gap, I critically examine the ‘human development and capabilities approach’ (HDCA) as a counter-ideology to neoliberalism promoted by the United Nations. Applying morphological discourse analysis and incorporating critical insights from recent work by Manfred Steger and Paul James, this study demonstrates how the HDCA (i.e. capabilities globalism) functions as a well-developed ideology steeped in a global imaginary.
