A New Measure Of Digital Economic Activity And Its Impact On Local Opportunity, Karen Mossberger, Scott Lacombe, Caroline J. Tolbert Feb 2022

A New Measure Of Digital Economic Activity And Its Impact On Local Opportunity, Karen Mossberger, Scott Lacombe, Caroline J. Tolbert

Government: Faculty Publications

Online businesses and platform work can create the impression that the digital economy is ephemeral and placeless. But the digital economy is experienced locally, and its effects are spatial. Measuring them requires better community-level data on economic activities online. While new government data measures broadband subscriptions down to neighborhoods, existing public data do not measure how broadband is used in local communities, and whether this digital activity affects economic outcomes. We analyze new monthly data on over 20 million domain name hosts/websites in the United States from November 2018 to November 2020 drawing on customer data. Surveys show that 3 …

Texas Disenfranchisement Of Felons, Michelle Baker

Quest

Policy Research Project

Research in progress for GOVT 2306: Honors Texas Government

Faculty Mentor: Tiffany Cartwright, Ph.D.

Michelle Baker wrote the following research paper as an assignment for my online GOVT 2306: Honors Texas Government class during the Fall 2020 semester. The class assignment helps students begin to formulate a classic policy paper, in which alternative policy options are discussed and analyzed, ultimately leading to a preferred policy option. Students submitted just a few paragraphs of the paper at a time over the course of the fall semester before finally pulling everything together in one cohesive research paper. As Michelle’s …

Why Have Military Courts Become Such As Popular Tool Of Repression?, Brett J. Kyle, Andrew G. Reiter Jan 2022

Why Have Military Courts Become Such As Popular Tool Of Repression?, Brett J. Kyle, Andrew G. Reiter

Political Science Faculty Publications

In November, the Taliban government in Afghanistan announced the establishment of a military tribunal to enforce Sharia law. It will also handle complaints against Taliban police, army, and intelligence units. The developments in Afghanistan are not unique. Military courts have been a key feature of human rights abuses in India, Pakistan, Libya, Egypt, Tunisia, and many other countries. Why are regimes of all types increasingly turning to military courts as a tool of repression?

Interest Groups, Local Politics, And Police Unions, Daniel Disalvo Jan 2022

Interest Groups, Local Politics, And Police Unions, Daniel Disalvo

Publications and Research

Police unions raise issues of great importance for political scientists. Yet, the field has neglected them. This essay argues that political scientists should see police unions as important interest groups, empowered by state collective bargaining laws, that are important players in local politics and shapers of the criminal justice system in America. The organizational properties that make police unions important interest groups are described. The important political questions that arise once we consider police union as interest groups are examined. The existing research on police unions—especially their impact on government costs and police behavior—is detailed. Ultimately, the study of collective …

Negotiating With Terrorists: An Interdisciplinary Analysis Of Khasavyurt Agreement And Good Friday Agreement, Nataliya Shull Jan 2022

Negotiating With Terrorists: An Interdisciplinary Analysis Of Khasavyurt Agreement And Good Friday Agreement, Nataliya Shull

Theses and Dissertations

This study examines the nature of negotiations of two different conflicts: the First Chechen War, and The Northern Ireland Conflict. I identify a set of decisive variables and their role in the conflict and post-conflict environments that affected the sustainability of the peace agreements. I also argue there is a relation between these decisive variables and identified themes of the agreements. A thematic analysis of the agreements' texts adds another dimension to the meaning within the original text and to the determinants of a comprehensive agreement. The findings suggest that while some of these variables proved to be decisive, the …

The Influence Of Perceived Realistic And Symbolic Threat On College Students’ Attitudes Toward Immigrants And Immigration, Brook Shantel Spurlock Jan 2022

The Influence Of Perceived Realistic And Symbolic Threat On College Students’ Attitudes Toward Immigrants And Immigration, Brook Shantel Spurlock

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

Immigration has been one of the most dominant and salient political issues during recent presidential election. Unfortunately, the debates surrounding immigration often castigated Latin Americans as threatening, with the intent to spark fear among voters, while increasing the support for anti-immigration policies, such as the border wall and opposition to passage of a law granting citizenship to Dreamers. The purpose of this dissertation was to determine how realistic and symbolic threats influence college students’ attitudes on immigrants and immigration. Very few studies have been conducted on how realistic and symbolic threats influence immigration attitudes and opinions regarding a wide range …

Middle Powers And The U.S.-Iran Conflict, Erika Simpson

Political Science Publications

The article "Middle Powers and the U.S.-Iran Conflict" by Erika Simpson examines the geopolitical ramifications of the Trump administration's targeted killing of Iranian General Qassem Soleimani. It explores Iran's military retaliation and the broader implications for Middle Eastern stability, including potential threats to NATO allies. The piece highlights the precarious position of middle powers like Canada, emphasizing their limited strategic options but potential role in advocating restraint and negotiation. The article also delves into the impact of the conflict on NATO unity, the potential for a power vacuum in Iraq, and the broader international legal and diplomatic challenges. It concludes …

Fighting Human Trafficking By Better Understanding Nonprofit Collaboration, Angie Holzer

Journal of Nonprofit Innovation

Abstract: This research study examines nonprofit organizations and how collaboration plays a part in the human trafficking efforts within the United States. A descriptive study was conducted analyzing data from a quantitative, survey-based research method. Using a sample of 29 nonprofit leaders working in fighting human trafficking, data was collected on 1) what challenges nonprofits face in collaborating, 2) what technology tools nonprofits use to collaborate, and 3) how many other groups a single nonprofit works with in combating human trafficking. The findings show that the main challenges are 1) limited time, and 2) competition and/or lack of trust.

Latest Research On Human Trafficking

Journal of Nonprofit Innovation

Learn more about human trafficking and the research being done and the impact it has in our communities.

“Female victims continue to be particularly affected by trafficking in persons. In 2018, for every 10 victims detected globally, about five were adult women and two were girls. About one third of the overall detected victims were children, both girls (19 per cent) and boys (15 per cent), while 20 per cent were adult men. Traffickers target victims who are marginalized or in difficult circumstances. Undocumented migrants and people who are in desperate need of employment are also vulnerable, particularly to trafficking …

Healing Racial Injustice With Mindfulness Research, Training, & Practice, Danielle "Danae" Laura Jan 2022

Healing Racial Injustice With Mindfulness Research, Training, & Practice, Danielle "Danae" Laura

Mindfulness Studies Theses

This thesis offers a collection of authors and studies in support of improved research, training, and practice connecting mindfulness with racial justice through intergroup applications. The paper identifies barriers at work (e.g., colorblindness, spiritual bypass, white fragility, and implicit bias) in contemplative science, Western Buddhist communities, and secular mindfulness centers, which block the sizeable contributions possible in studying the intergroup application of mindfulness practice—specifically Lovingkindness Meditation, among others—when used as an intervention with anti-racist aims. Through secondary qualitative research, I reviewed six key works from Black authors on mindfulness and race, as well as six sample studies on the prosocial …

Politics Is Making Us Sick: The Negative Impact Of Political Engagement On Public Health During The Trump Administration, Kevin Smith

Department of Political Science: Faculty Publications

Objectives To quantify the effect of politics on the physical, psychological, and social health of American adults during the four-year span of the Trump administration.

Methods A previously validated politics and health scale was used to compare health markers in nationally representative surveys administered to separate samples in March 2017 (N = 800) and October 2020 (N = 700). Participants in the 2020 survey were re-sampled approximately two weeks after the 2020 election and health markers were compared to their preelection baselines.

Results Large numbers of Americans reported politics takes a significant toll on a range of health markers—everything from …

A Battleground No More: Cosmopolitanism, The Culture Wars, And The Urban-Rural Divide In Ohio Elections, 2004-2020, Colin D. Swearingen, Thomas Lindstrom

The Journal of Economics and Politics

Long a battleground state in presidential elections, Ohio trended toward the GOP in both 2016 and 2020. Despite losing the national popular vote, Trump secured the state’s electoral votes by comfortable margins in both elections, sparking the question of what explains this shift? We ground this question broadly in the realignment literature, testing two slightly overlapping theoretical viewpoints: geo-cultural and socioeconomic/cosmopolitanism. The geo-cultural viewpoint emphasizes the urban-rural divide in American politics, arguing that the culture is completely different on opposite ends of the urban-rural continuum, resulting in disparate election results. The socioeconomic/cosmopolitan viewpoint acknowledges that culture and social issues play …

Gobernar: The Journal of Latin American Public Policy and Governance
