During the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic, the COVIDiSTRESS Consortium launched an open-access global survey to understand and improve individuals’ experiences related to the crisis. A year later, we extended this line of research by launching a new survey to address the dynamic landscape of the pandemic. This survey was released with the goal of addressing diversity, equity, and inclusion by working with over 150 researchers across the globe who collected data in 48 languages and dialects across 137 countries. The resulting cleaned dataset described here includes 15,740 of over 20,000 responses. The dataset allows cross-cultural study of psychological wellbeing …
Pragmatism And Associative Political Obligations, David Lefkowitz
Pragmatism And Associative Political Obligations, David Lefkowitz
Philosophy Faculty Publications
Proponents of an associative account of political obligation maintain that individuals bear certain moral duties simply in virtue of their membership in a particular political community. I defend this thesis by interpreting it as a metaethical claim that expresses or implicitly relies on a pragmatist account of the nature of normativity, justification, and knowledge. Such a defense has a number of virtues. First, it offers a compelling rationale for the strategy commonly employed to defend the associative thesis. Second, a pragmatist reading provides the resources necessary to rebut a number of objections advanced against the associative thesis, such as the …

Public Opinion Governance And Think Tank Research Based On Think Tank Double Helix Methodology, Qianqian Li, Yijun Liu, Ning Ma, Hongbing Wang
Bulletin of Chinese Academy of Sciences (Chinese Version)
Public opinion governance research is a typical think tank research driven by big data, which should deal with the "five major challenges" faced by China's economic transformation, social transformation, and reform challenges, namely, risk intertwined challenges, modeling complexity challenges, interdisciplinary challenges, social impact challenges, and scenario uncertainty challenges. The Think Tank Double Helix Methodology provides an effective research paradigm to guide the whole process of public opinion governance and think tank research. Based on this methodology, opinion research could effectively respond to the five significant challenges and serve the demands of national governance. This paper demonstrates a deep understanding of …

The layout of basic research is a typical multi-stakeholder and multi-disciplinary comprehensive policy research, which is suitable to be guided by the think tank double helix methodology. Firstly, the study summarizes the "organization" and theoretical understanding of basic research layout. Secondly, based on MIPS logical hierarchy method and DIIS process fusion method, the study analyzes the fusion mechanism of "discipline layout" and "task layout" of basic research. Finally, the study puts forward the promotion strategies and measures of the future basic research layout from four aspects:system layout, discipline layout, task layout, and international layout.
Decomposing Research Problems In Think Tank Double Helix Methodology, Guoliang Yang, Jiaofeng Pan
Decomposing Research Problems In Think Tank Double Helix Methodology, Guoliang Yang, Jiaofeng Pan
Bulletin of Chinese Academy of Sciences (Chinese Version)
How to correctly analyze and decompose the research problems considering the complexity of think tank research problems, especially the major needs of the country, is of great significance for proposing scientific and effective problem solutions. One of the key issues in the Think Tank Double Helix Methodology the need to analyze research problems from the process of "analysis-convergence-reduction". That is to decompose them into a series of sub-problems, and to combine various types of knowledge to investigate the sub-problems, and to conduct a comprehensive restitution of the research problem to propose a satisfactory solution to the original problem finally. In …

Theoretical Thinking On Practical Application Of Double Helix Methodology In Think Tank Research, Bin Yang, Biao Shi
Bulletin of Chinese Academy of Sciences (Chinese Version)
The Double Helix Methodology regards think tank research as a relatively independent and special research topic, from the analysis, fusion, and restoration process of think tank research, based on the process fusion method of DIIS and the logical hierarchy method of MIPS iterating with each other, analyzing the spiral coupling relationship between them, and forming a complete and systematic theoretical framework and methodological system from the characteristics of time and space. This methodology comes from the founder's long-term strategic and policy research practice, and is also effectively applied to many national major research projects, national high-end think tank projects and …

Bulletin of Chinese Academy of Sciences (Chinese Version)
Index research on the science and technology (S&T) innovation and development is a typical think tank research that originates from practice, is used for practice, and is higher than practice. However, existing research has several problems, such as insufficient theory and single perspective. This is not conducive to ensure the scientificity of research process and the accuracy of research results. Fortunately, the think tank double helix methodology has the typical characteristics of systematic thinking, whole-process guidance, and operational ideas, which provides new ideas for effectively solving the above problems. Thus, based on the think tank double helix methodology, this study …

The Experiences That Most Affected The Political Socialization Of Us Undergraduates, Dan Ha

Most articles about the Gen Z’s political beliefs focus a lot on what they believe, but not so much on how they came to or why they hold those beliefs. Through a series of interviews and one focus group meeting, I investigated what events or experiences were most instrumental in shaping the beliefs of some current US undergraduate students. I found that experiences with very strong personal impacts were the most influential in shaping the participants’ current beliefs; experiences in which they or those close to them were negatively misrepresented or in which they began to distrust certain authority figures …

A Large-Scale Sentiment Analysis Of Tweets Pertaining To The 2020 Us Presidential Election, Rao Hamza Ali, Gabriela Pinto, Evelyn Lawrie, Erik J. Linstead
Engineering Faculty Articles and Research
We capture the public sentiment towards candidates in the 2020 US Presidential Elections, by analyzing 7.6 million tweets sent out between October 31st and November 9th, 2020. We apply a novel approach to first identify tweets and user accounts in our database that were later deleted or suspended from Twitter. This approach allows us to observe the sentiment held for each presidential candidate across various groups of users and tweets: accessible tweets and accounts, deleted tweets and accounts, and suspended or inaccessible tweets and accounts. We compare the sentiment scores calculated for these groups and provide key insights into the …

This paper introduces a new approach to the quantitative study of democratization. Building on the comparative case-study and large-N literature, it outlines an episode approach that identifies the discrete beginning of a period of political liberalization, traces its progression, and classifies episodes as successful versus different types of failing outcomes, thus avoiding potentially fallacious assumptions of unit homogeneity. We provide a description and analysis of all 383 liberalization episodes from 1900 to 2019, offering new insights on democratic “waves”. We also demonstrate the value of this approach by showing that while several established covariates are valuable for predicting the ultimate …

The Violence In Our Humanity: Principles, Action, And The Erosion Of State Sovereignty, Rasheed Idou
Theses and Dissertations
The past two decades have witnessed an increasing number of armed conflicts, both inter- and intra-nationally, and an even more increasing number of multilateral military interventions without UN Security Council authorization. Central to the discussion of these interventions are the themes of humanitarianism and state sovereignty. The aim of this thesis is to investigate the relationship between humanitarian imperatives and principles of sovereignty within the context of armed conflict to better understand the tensions that have led to the current global outcomes. In so doing, it identifies how humanitarian principles, imperatives, and actions have affected the contemporary conception of state …

Same Game, Different Rules: Pointillist Imperialism And The New Cartography Of Great Power Competition, Andrew Jesse Shaughnessy
Dissertations and Theses
For centuries, "Great Powers" competed for global hegemony not only through building up military strength and amassing wealth, but through the formal acquisition of distant lands, conquered and folded into their borders. Today, core states continue to vie for global power, but no longer exert formal control or sovereignty over less powerful states. So how has the nature of great power competition in peripheral states changed? Most scholars studying great power competition measure power in terms of military and economic resources, often failing to account for a third, crucial dimension in international power politics: the impact of distributed networks of …

Erosion, Backsliding, Or Abuse: Three Metaphors For Democratic Decline, Thomas Keck
Political Science - All Scholarship
Drawing on Rosalind Dixon and David Landau’s Abusive Constitutional Borrowing: Legal Globalization and the Subversion of Liberal Democracy (2021), this essay calls attention to three competing metaphors for democratic decline (democratic erosion, democratic backsliding, and abusive constitutionalism) and elaborates their implications for how supporters of liberal democracy might arrest and reverse the decline. Drawing on Richard L. Hasen’s Cheap Speech: How Disinformation Poisons Our Politics–And How to Cure It (2022), Stephen M. Feldman’s Pack the Court: A Defense of Supreme Court Expansion (2021), and the Final Report of the Presidential Commission on the Supreme Court of the United States (2021), …

"Everything Is Political Now": Teaching Politics In The Age Of Trump, John G. Lund
College of Education Theses and Dissertations
Many American high school government and history teachers aim to convey curriculum content without bringing in their own personal political beliefs or biases. However, in the hyperpolarized political climate of the past decade, teachers have grappled with teaching their courses when potentially controversial political or cultural issues come up in class conversations or lessons. Their teaching decisions and the classroom environment can have an impact on students’ learning, mental health, and their own views on American politics, history, and culture. This qualitative, narrative inquiry study examined ten high school teachers’ practice of teaching politics in the age of Trump. Findings …

The Gulf region in 2017 experienced a diplomatic crisis that was quite complicated so that it could be said as a regional conflict which was manifested in the form of a blockade and the closure of diplomatic relations between them. This crisis mainly involves Saudi and its allies to blockade Qatar in various ways. This conflict made Kuwait emerge as a mediator trying to restore the diplomatic situation in the Gulf region back to normal. By using literature studies and qualitative research methods in analyzing the data, it can be seen that Kuwait succeeded in neutralizing and slowly returning to …

This research note provides a detailed account of the development and implementation of a household survey conducted in 2016 as part of a larger investigation into the lifeways and political subjectivities of Brazil’s “once-rising poor,” the demographic sector comprising poor and working-class people who experienced various forms of socioeconomic mobility in the early twenty-first century. After reflecting on the challenges of maintaining a critical perspective on class labels and relations that were intensely contested at the time, the article introduces the survey sample (n = 1,204), highlighting variables captured. It then establishes the demographic profile, mobility experiences, political values, attitudes, …

With the politics of borders, the socio-economic divide between the United States and Mexico is evident. The geographic proximity to the U.S. makes the Mexico–Guatemala border an extension of the U.S. border enforcement regime. This article argues that the politics surrounding the U.S.–Guatemala border have not necessarily changed, because, at the core, the main objective of these border governance practices is to stop the movement of undesirable bodies (Khosravi 2011). Further, the article argues that the practices of containment force migrants to resist through their movement and seek strategies of survival. By comparing the administrations of Peña Nieto and López …
