The Etiology Of A New Era: Where Heroes Become Zeros And Victims Become Villains, Traci Jo Harmon
The Etiology Of A New Era: Where Heroes Become Zeros And Victims Become Villains, Traci Jo Harmon
Doctoral Dissertations and Projects
The United States is in a state of turmoil. Unlike any time before this, division in the country is overtaking the COVID-19 pandemic as the biggest threat to life and liberty. Previous research is contradictive in identifying the etiology of anti-police rhetoric, anti-Christian rhetoric, and victim-blaming. The current research attempts to find out if mainstream and or social media is the etiology of the racial, religious, and victim division in The United States. Attitudes towards law enforcement, Christians, and victims were measured against platforms for current events, hours per day on mainstream and social media, age, gender, and race/ethnicity. Significant …

Political Reform And The Dilemma Of Jordan’S Democratic Position, Khalid M. Aldabas
Association of Arab Universities Journal for Arts مجلة اتحاد الجامعات العربية للآداب
This study aims at exploring the determinants of political reform, and the problems of democratic repositioning in Jordan. The study will focus on government's relationship with Parliament, and its stand towards Muslim Brotherhood, with security concerns linked to obstacles that stand in the way of the Jordanian democratic reform, along with Jordan’s rank indicators within the international democratic reports. This study was based on the following hypothesis: There is a positive correlation between the regional and international development trends and the deterioration of the economic conditions in Jordan, on the one hand, and the need for more political reform and …
The 2011 Somalia Famine, Aya Ahmed
The 2011 Somalia Famine, Aya Ahmed
The Undergraduate Research Journal
In early 2011, the citizens of Somalia became unable to access basic human necessities such as food and water until the situation changed dramatically, leading to the daily death of thousands of human beings. This research paper tackles the negative consequences resulting from the Al-Shabaab movement, a movement who has the belief that applying the Sharia (Islamic Law) is the only valid solution to any issue as it is supported by the Sunni Islam, political issues, and the delay of the famine’s declaration. This research begs several questions which are: what were the factors which led to Somalia’s famine in …

The Provenances And Postscripts Of 1989, Jokubas Salyga
Political Science Faculty Publications
The books under review exemplify some of the finest recent work on the historically informed political economy of Central and Eastern Europe. While different in their conceptual frameworks and geographical foci, the titles converge in the advancement of nuanced and convincing arguments, displaying both theoretical acuity and empirical depth to great effect. Bartel, Fabry, and Pula all share a resolute dedication to illuminating the under-explored provenances of neoliberalism and/or globalization in the region, that predate the annus mirabilis of 1989. Their contributions situate the ‘Eastern bloc’ states within the contours of evolving global political economy and the existential crises engulfing …

Against The Tide: Indigenous Knowledge And Education For Humanization, Arturo Rodriguez, Kevin Russel Magill
Against The Tide: Indigenous Knowledge And Education For Humanization, Arturo Rodriguez, Kevin Russel Magill
Journal of Multicultural Affairs
Power brokers and their market economies enforce education on a global level. According to the United Nations, the effects of global neoliberal capitalism cause human rights violations in all parts of the world, yet democratic countries scoff at these findings (Pogge, 2002 & 2005). People of the world continue to believe that tying minoritized students to existing structures and ensuring enculturation is the best possible outcome for all involved (Suárez-Orozco & Suárez-Orozco, 2015). That is, minoritized children are educated to ensure first-world countries produce a minimally educated and willing labor force. In this paper we argue the following: 1) power …
The Plight Of Threatened Afghan And Iranian Scholars And Students, Mehrzad Boroujerdi
The Plight Of Threatened Afghan And Iranian Scholars And Students, Mehrzad Boroujerdi
History and Political Science Faculty Research & Creative Works
In the Islamic Republic of Iran and the Islamic Emirate of Afghanistan religious ideas and laws seek to control all spheres of private and public life and state-sponsored restrictions hinder access to education and academic freedom for numerous citizens. The prevailing sedimented culture in both countries has resulted in the dismissal of many experienced scholarly personnel and an ensuing “brain drain.” This research project has cataloged some of the conditions that have impinge upon scholarly inquiry in Iran and Afghanistan and have led many scholars to leave their countries of birth. Based on an extensive literature review and personal interviews …

White Politics, Black Lives, & The Cost Of Being Green: Environmental Racism In Emelle, Alabama, Laura M. Wilson
White Politics, Black Lives, & The Cost Of Being Green: Environmental Racism In Emelle, Alabama, Laura M. Wilson
Midwest Social Sciences Journal
In the 1970s, Emelle, Alabama welcomed the establishment of a new corporation and the promise of new economic opportunities. The small settlement, almost exclusively African-American (94%) and in poverty (67%) was selected by Waste Management, Inc., after lobbying by Governor George Wallace to create the largest hazardous waste landfill in the US. When a state policy change significantly increasing costs, production slowed, jobs dissipated (from 430 to 250), and destitution returned. At the same time, other problems began to the surface, including water contamination and increasing rates of childhood cancers, attributable to the toxic seepage. The dump still operates, but …
Educating British Cabinet Ministers 1922-2022: Quantitatively Comparing The Secondary Schools And Higher Education Systems, John William Hogan
Educating British Cabinet Ministers 1922-2022: Quantitatively Comparing The Secondary Schools And Higher Education Systems, John William Hogan
Datasets
In democratic societies the role of the education system is considered crucially important. It is a critical element for adding value to human and social capital. The role played by the education system in the creation and reproduction of governing elites, and its countervailing potential to create a more meritocratic and egalitarian society, has been an enduring topic of concern, research and debate. However, many of these debates have been rendered opaque by an inability to quantitatively examine, and directly compare, the influence of elite formation systems. To help resolve these issues, we employ elite formation quantitative indices to directly …
The Complex Intersections Of Being A Latina Immigrant Survivor: How Multiple Systems Of Oppression Enable Intimate Partner Violence, Zulema Aleman
The Complex Intersections Of Being A Latina Immigrant Survivor: How Multiple Systems Of Oppression Enable Intimate Partner Violence, Zulema Aleman
sprinkle: an undergraduate journal of feminist and queer studies
The realm of intimate partner violence education, prevention and awareness is one that is currently growing. Even though there are improvements happening, there are communities being left out of both the movement and body of research. This paper aims at connecting the stories of undocumented Latinas who are survivors of intimate partner violence in the central coast of California with the current body of research on immigrant survivors. In doing so, it seeks to explore the areas where the body of research matches the stories of these women in the central coast of California and where there is a lack …
How Propaganda Affects Public Opinion In China: Evidence From The First Phase Of The Covid-19 Pandemic, Dan Chen
Political Science Faculty Publications
During a national crisis, can state propaganda shift public opinion, and if so, in what direction? Existing studies show that the effects of state propaganda on public opinion in China are mixed. Analysing data from an online survey experiment conducted during the initial phase of the COVID-19 pandemic in early 2020, this article finds that the Chinese public responded positively to propaganda that promoted Xi Jinping’s leadership, when these messages included text as well as images that showed Xi being compassionate during his visit to Wuhan. However, when textual propaganda focused on familiar narratives, such as Xi’s leadership, international praise …

Primary Barriers To Working Class Representation, Sarah A. Treul, Eric Hansen
Primary Barriers To Working Class Representation, Sarah A. Treul, Eric Hansen
Political Science: Faculty Publications and Other Works
How do working class candidates perform in primary elections? Working class candidates rarely emerge, but existing evidence suggests workers perform as well as white-collar candidates once on the ballot. However, this evidence comes from studies of general elections. It is unknown whether these findings extend to other types of elections like primaries, where candidates compete without the political and financial backing of a party. We collect and analyze novel data describing the occupational background of all candidates who competed in U.S. House primaries between 2008 and 2016. The results show that working class candidates received an average vote share 24 …
