The Role Of Mayors In Achieving Brunei Darussalam’S Wawasan 2035, Lessons From China, Brice Tseen Fu Lee, Ayidana Asihaer, Juan Pablo Sims
Journal of Strategic and Global Studies
Brunei Darussalam's national vision, WAWASAN 2035, sets forth ambitious goals for the nation's development, emphasizing a centralized governance paradigm. However, the potential of decentralized governance, as exemplified by China's mayor-led districts, offers a compelling model for achieving national aspirations. This research explores the feasibility and potential benefits of introducing mayors in Brunei's districts, drawing insights from China's successful decentralized governance structure. By fostering inter-district competition and allowing for localized policy tailoring, Brunei can enhance its adaptability and responsiveness to local nuances. Drawing from China's experiences, this study provides a comprehensive understanding of how Brunei might optimize its governance structure to …
The Consequences Of Civil-Military Relations On Civil Wars In The Middle East, Alaa Bahnasy
The Consequences Of Civil-Military Relations On Civil Wars In The Middle East, Alaa Bahnasy
Theses and Dissertations
To unravel the complex dynamics surrounding the outbreak of civil wars in the aftermath of the Arab Spring uprisings, one of the first questions that come to mind is the reason why some Arab countries have witnessed civil wars whilst others have not. The civil-military relations play a significant role in the matter. While much of the existing literature on the causes of civil wars, there is a scarcity of papers that take into consideration the role of civil-military relations. This research focuses primarily on two variables independent variables, namely the civil-military relations and the diversified ethnicities alongside the dependent …

Ontological Complexity Of Interpolity Orders: The Encounter Between Chosŏn And Tibet In Qing, Inho Choi, Minju Kwon
Ontological Complexity Of Interpolity Orders: The Encounter Between Chosŏn And Tibet In Qing, Inho Choi, Minju Kwon
Political Science Faculty Articles and Research
This article examines the ontological complexity of interpolity orders with a focus on peripheral polities in the Qing order. Existing multiculturalist studies of the Qing order emphasized diverse cultural representations of a single imperial reality, lacking an understanding of multiple realities experienced by peripheral participants. Our analysis reveals the ontological complexity—rather than cultural diversity—of the Qing order, in which multiple ontological agents experienced different lived worlds, from the encounter between Chosŏn Korean envoys and the Tibetan Panchen Lama at Emperor Qianlong’s birthday ceremony. By analyzing the Chosŏn envoy member Pak Chiwŏn’s travelog and Tibetan records, we argue that the Chosŏn …

Artificial Intelligence In Politics: Contesting Power In Human And Nonhuman Relations In The Digital Era, Caroline Paskarina
Jurnal Wacana Politik
The discourse on technology and politics is still marked by two competing narratives: utopian and dystopian. The two narratives contest each other regarding who will be more powerful in the digital era, whether humans or technology. However, beyond this dichotomous debate, artificial intelligence has become inevitable and creates new power practices that cannot be adequately analyzed from these two extreme poles. This article discusses the nature of power in the contesting discourse on the creation of artificial intelligence and the implications of using artificial intelligence in politics. The literature study method is used to identify narratives that shape discourses about …

With Liberty And Justice For All? The U.S. Internment Of Japanese Peruvians During World War Ii, Catherine T. Meisenheimer
With Liberty And Justice For All? The U.S. Internment Of Japanese Peruvians During World War Ii, Catherine T. Meisenheimer
Swarthmore Undergraduate History Journal
After the bombing of Pearl Harbor on December 7, 1941, the United States committed to a policy of interning more than 120,000 Japanese Americans. While Japanese American detention remains the most researched instance of wartime internment, the U.S. incarceration of Japanese Peruvians merits equal attention. The political forces behind Japanese Peruvian internment transcended the more common explanations that haunt so much of literature today. Racism and hysteria played their respective roles in this history of wartime internment, but as the war progressed, other reasons for Japanese internment emerged. On January 4, 1942, the Japanese began interning American civilians in the …

From the perspective of input-process-output, the study proposes a three-dimensional measurement framework of potential-efficiency-strength for national science and technology competitiveness and realizes a multi-dimensional comprehensive measurement of national science and technology competitiveness, which takes the differences in both scale and efficiency into account. Based on The Report on National Science and Technology Competitiveness 2023, the study measures the national science and technology competitiveness of 34 major countries in the world and …
Global Criminal Justice Practices And Public Safety, Rachel Hwang
Global Criminal Justice Practices And Public Safety, Rachel Hwang
Posters-at-the-Capitol
Popular political discourse in the U.S. assumes that more funding for law enforcement and prison facilities will make civilians safer, presumably by reducing crime and sense of disorder. However, studies have shown that the relationship between these factors may not be as straightforward. With the killing of George Floyd and increased media coverage of police brutality, existing literature focuses mainly on the relationship between police and crime in the U.S. The impact of incarceration (the result of procedural justice) on the community (for whom procedural justice exists) is less known, especially on a global scale. We argue that cycling people …

Between Religion And Politics: The Case Of The Islamic Movement In Israel, Suheir Abu Oksa Daoud
Between Religion And Politics: The Case Of The Islamic Movement In Israel, Suheir Abu Oksa Daoud
Political Science
The power of the “moderate” branch of the Islamic Movement (Alharaka al-Islamiyya, subsequently referred to as IM) Southern Faction (IMSF) in Israel stems from its ability to adapt to different situations, reconcile with the complex reality of being an indigenous minority in a state that defines itself a “Jewish state”, and operate within the state structure accepting democratic processes that have long been debated to clash with Islamism. Besides being represented in the Israeli Knesset since 1996, the culmination of this adaptation was the joining of the movement to the short-lived Zionist coalition government on 2 June 2021 (the government …

Twenty-seven subdistricts make up the Sumenep Regency; nine of these are dispersed as islands, while eighteen are situated on Madura Island. The discrepancies in growth between mainland and island are caused by this geographic structure. The infrastructure, health, and education sectors are the main subjects of this study. According to this study, obstacles that impede the optimization of education in island locations include school references and far from the Education Office and the Ministry of Religion’s oversight. In the …

This research investigates the strategic utilization of political communication by the Gerindra Party on the Twitter platform (X) leading up to the 2024 General Election in Indonesia. With a focus on the adoption of the ‘gemoy’ label by the public, subsequently becoming a framing tool for Prabowo, this shapes a positive image and significantly enhances his popularity. Through a comprehensive analysis of sentiment and engagement displays on social media, this study reveals the effectiveness of Gerindra’s political content in capturing public attention, signaling a paradigm shift in the dynamics of political communication in the digital era. The research adopts a …

The Bemused Conceptual Trends Of Populism, Yehya Qaoud
Journal of the Arab American University مجلة الجامعة العربية الامريكية للبحوث
This study discussed the concept of populism, which has evolved through different historical stages. The researcher reviewed the conceptual trends of populism as stated by different scholars and intellectuals as an entry for paraphrasing and analyzing the concept. The study concluded that populism is still a controversial concept in the social sciences which resists the theoretical generalizations. This is conspicuously reflected in its applications, which clearly showed structural problems in the populist thought and its reflections in the society. However, there are conceptual trends in populism that are most frequently used, not to mention the consensus among theorists on some …

Critical Race Theory (CRT) has become a flashpoint of elite political discord, yet how Americans actually perceive CRT is unclear. We theorize that Republican elites utilized a strong framing strategy to re-define CRT as an “empty signifier” representing broader racial and cultural grievances. Using a survey and a pre-registered experiment among U.S. adults (N = 19,060), we find that this strategy worked. Republicans exhibit more familiarity with CRT and hold more negatively valenced (and wide ranging) sentiments toward CRT, relative to Democrats. Moreover, compared to teaching the legacy of racism in schools, Republicans are significantly more opposed to teaching CRT …
