The Midwest Quarterly: A Journal of Contemporary Thought

in this issue. . .

FOLLOWING the pattern of a year ago, this is our summer literary issue. Whether we can set it down as a hard and fast rule that every future summer issue will be literary, it is impossible to say at this writing. Our five years of publishing experience indicate that we can expect to continue to receive an abundance of manuscripts treating literary subjects--probably at a ratio of three to two over all other subjects. This makes it relatively easy if not down right good sense to devote at least one issue a year to literature. …

An Analysis Of The Rapacki Plan To Denuclearize Central Europe, James R. Ozinga Jul 1964

An Analysis Of The Rapacki Plan To Denuclearize Central Europe, James R. Ozinga

Masters Theses

Introduction

In 1957, Adam Rapacki, Foreign Minister of Poland, proposed that a zone be created in Central Europe in which nuclear weapons of all kinds would be prohibited. The zone was to include the countries of West Germany, East Germany, Poland, and Czechoslovakia. This paper seeks to study that proposal in the light of its background and consequences. The purpose of such a study, beyond the hopeful accretion of knowledge, is to form conclusions based on the analysis of the proposal as the beginning of a solution to the political and military impasse in Central Europe.

The proposal will be …

A Study Of The Government Of Parchment, Michigan, Shirley Forbes Swenson Jul 1964

A Study Of The Government Of Parchment, Michigan, Shirley Forbes Swenson

Masters Theses

Introduction

Suburban-living has become a major part of our culture and the term has been widely accepted and interpreted to mean a distinctive way of life highly advantaged over life in strictly urban or rural settings. The first major move to the suburbs was by the wealthier segments of our society, and the gracious, leisurely pattern of living they sought still colors the popular image of the term "suburban."

Polish Settlement At Yalta: An Act Of Betrayal Or An Act Of Realism?, Harold R. Mogg Jul 1964

Polish Settlement At Yalta: An Act Of Betrayal Or An Act Of Realism?, Harold R. Mogg

Graduate Student Research Papers

With all of this apparent concern by the Big Three regarding Poland, why has there been so much criticism of the Polish settlement at Yalta? Did Roosevelt and Churchill actually appease Stalin in regard to the Polish settlement? What was this settlement at Yalta--an act of betrayal or an act of realism? This is the confusing question that the writer of this paper will attempt to answer.

The Midwest Quarterly: A Journal of Contemporary Thought

in this issue. . .

INITIALLY we had ambitious, even extravagant, plans for this spring number, plans involving a variety of essays from key members of the United States Senate and the House of Representatives as well as a carefully selected covey of candidates for the Republican presidential nomination. Quite obviously, the Congress has been busy of late, although its business is not always as fruitful as many would hope. And that New Hampshire primary on March 10 rather alters calculations regarding the GOP standard-bearer for 1964. In mid-February one of the (then) leading (?) candidates in that primary wrote …
