The Midwest Quarterly: A Journal of Contemporary Thought

in this issue. . .

THIS FIRST NUMBER of the ninth volume of THE MIDWEST QUARTERLY begins a new year with-somewhat to her surprise- a somewhat new editor. During a summer leave or a sabbatical absence of Professor Cornish, it is true, she has sometimes stepped in, has chewed pencils, checked copy, struggled with an engulfing correspondence, written forewords and afterwords, read proof, worried with subscriptions and copyright and the multifarious details involved in any publication, and all the while has rejoiced rather too audibly in the prospect of a speedy release. The Logic Of United States Aid To Latin America, Robert Kenneth Godwin

Political Science ETDs

Since the inauguration of the Alliance for progress five years ago, there has ben an increasing number of coupe d’état in Latin America. Governments have been overthrown in Brazil, Peru, Guatemala, Ecuador, Argentina, Bolivia, the Dominican Republic, and Honduras. The majority of these coups overthrow constitutionally elected left-of-center governments. It is this type of government that has been recognized by the United States government as the best suited for successfully carrying out the goals of the Alliance for Progress.

More specifically, two articles deal with important figures in English letters: William Wordsworth, the Romantic poet who grew to estrangement from and disillusion with his native country, and Joseph Conrad, English by adoption and recognized as a superior craftsman in his second tongue by virtue of a distinguished list …
