The Impact Of Religion On Political Development, Jooinn Lee Jan 1972

The Impact Of Religion On Political Development, Jooinn Lee

Journal of the Minnesota Academy of Science

The author attempts to formulate a broad-gauge theory, the conceptual framework designed to discover the influence of religion upon the development of the political system and politics. By systematically examining both the social effects of religion and the place of religious institutions in society, the author seeks to determine whether religion is a causal factor of political development, thus supporting his thesis that there is a kind of dialectical relationship between religion and political development.

Influence--A Comparative Study In Three Rural Communities, David M. Slipy, Dennis Kleinsasser

Journal of the Minnesota Academy of Science

The influentials of the three communities are identified, and their social demographic, community participation and attitudinal characteristics are scrutinized. Finally, the value of these comparisons, especially for the community development specialist, are examined.

The Development Of Municipal Government In The Territory Of Utah, Alvin Charles Koritz Jan 1972

The Development Of Municipal Government In The Territory Of Utah, Alvin Charles Koritz

Theses and Dissertations

In 1846 the Mormons were expelled westward from Nauvoo, Illinois. Beyond the borders of the United States, the Mormon Church absorbed the civil functions of municipal government, a pattern which continued in the Great Basin and received the sanction of state authority in 1849 under Deseret.

As the political arm of the "Kingdom of God," the Council of Fifty influenced local political development as its members simultaneously occupied elective offices in both the territorial legislature and municipal government.

During the first decade as a territory, Utah's city charters generally followed the pattern established by Nauvoo in 1840. However, in the …

The Midwest Quarterly: A Journal of Contemporary Thought

in this issue. . .

IN A GALLANT EFFORT to stay on top of the news-no easy matter for a quarterly journal in swiftly changing times, and with a presidential surprise-of-the-month to distract us-we have updated copy, made changes in galleys, and on one occasion inserted fresh copy into our almost sacrosanct page proofs. This currency we owe to the vigilance of our authors, one of whom submitted new copy with the desperate comment that he believed he had now allowed for every possibility except a presidential defection to Russia!

IN THIS ISSUE our first article is a timely discussion …

Development Of California Municipal Recall Law, Jere Wilbur Chapman Jan 1972

Development Of California Municipal Recall Law, Jere Wilbur Chapman

University of the Pacific Theses and Dissertations

In California municipal politics recall has played a conspicuous role. It has consistently served as a source of controversy whenever it is undertaken. While it is a principle inspired by the direct democracy campaign of the California progressives in the early twentieth century, it remains as an evolving legal process and dynamic political issue within the context of California political history.

A Study Of Nephite, Lamanite, And Jaredite Governmental Institutions And Policies As Portrayed In The Book Of Mormon, Donald Arthur Cazier Jan 1972

A Study Of Nephite, Lamanite, And Jaredite Governmental Institutions And Policies As Portrayed In The Book Of Mormon, Donald Arthur Cazier

Theses and Dissertations

Nephite government was essentially theocratic, with both the monarchy and reign of the judges paralleling the similar institutions of the ancient Israelites. Ultimate political authority resided in the prophet. The laws were given by the Lord, and the principle of popular consent was recognized. The role of government was primarily national defense and the punishment of crime, not social reform.

Lamanite government was monarchal and despotic, with notable exceptions when the nation was converted to the gospel. The Jaredites theoretically lived under a theocratic monarchy, but intrigue, tyranny, and oppression were the rule rather than the exception.

In all three …

The Electoral College In The American Nation, Boyd J. Jentzsch Jan 1972

The Electoral College In The American Nation, Boyd J. Jentzsch

Undergraduate Honors Capstone Projects

Democracy in America is often guided by the visible forces of the moment. Dangers are too often seen in the context of political interest--when fire is seen, the hoses of democratic action come wheeling out. But there is no excitement in smoke alone. The near constitutional crisis of the 1968 Presidential elections, (when the strong third party candidacy of George Wallace threatened to throw the election into the House of Representatives), caused a lot of smoke and a spark of flame. The alarm was sounded and the volunteer firemen from the halls of Congress and Capitol Hill responded. The standers-by, …
