Clayton K. Yeutter, United States Secretary of Agriculture: Papers

GOOD MORNING AND THANK YOU FOR INVITING ME TO ADDRESS THIS GROUP. LAST YEAR, WHEN I TALKED TO YOU AT THE SCIA ANNUAL MEETING IN BURGENSTOCK, I TOLD YOU OF THE DYNAMIC GROWTH THE FUTURES INDUSTRY WAS UNDERGOING. I AM HAPPY TO REPORT THAT THAT GROWTH CONTINUED IN 1983. THE CHICAGO MERCANTILE EXCHANGE HAD ITS SEVENTH CONSECUTIVE RECORD-BREAKING YEAR, TOPPING 1982 TRADING VOLUME BY MORE THAN 13 PER CENT. SINCE 1972 WE HAVE SEEN OUR ANNUAL VOLUME GROW FROM 4.5 MILLION CONTRACTS TO 38.1 MILLION CONTRACTS--A TRULY PHENOMENAL RECORD!

Nonviolent Protest And Third Party Public Opinion: A Study Of The June 1978, Seabrook, New Hampshire, Antinuclear Power Protest, Neil H. Katz, John P. Hunt

Conflict Resolution Studies Faculty Book and Book Chapters

Political protest and nonviolent struggle have had a long history in the United States, dating back to colonial times. During the nineteenth century, nonviolence was associated with such causes as abolition, temperance, antimilitarism, and women's suffrage. More recently, the nonviolent tactics and strategies used in the civil rights and antiwar movements of the 1950s and 1960s spawned similar activity on a diverse array of issues, including urban poverty, Native American rights, welfare reform, homosexuality, women's rights, and environmental pollution. Although many of these movements have been chronicled and protest has been recognized as an effective method for influencing political and …

The Outlook For U.S. Agriculture And Agribusiness, Clayton K. Yeutter Jan 1984

The Outlook For U.S. Agriculture And Agribusiness, Clayton K. Yeutter

Clayton K. Yeutter, United States Secretary of Agriculture: Papers

Not since the 1930s have I been as concerned for the short term future of American agriculture as I am now. Last year's net farm income is estimated at only about $15.5 billion. In the aggregate, and in real term, that is the lowest it has been in decades. Fortunately, on a per capita or per farm basis the numbers are less depressing and, fortunately, they will begin to trend upward again in 1984. But it looks as if export tonnages will decline for the fourth year in a row, and farm land values may also decline for the fourth …

The Polish Party In Crisis, 1980-1982, David S. Mason Jan 1984

The Polish Party In Crisis, 1980-1982, David S. Mason

Scholarship and Professional Work - LAS

Over the last three years, the Polish United Workers' Party has suffered a major crisis, the most substantial crisis of any Communist party in any Communist party state. The disintegration of the party was at least partly responsible for both the development of Solidarity in the summer of 1980 and the imposition of martial law in December 1981. The lack of trust in the party and its authoritarian and unrepresentative character led the workers to demand an institution more responsive to their own needs. But the growth of Solidarity during 1981 and the continuing disintegration and fragmentation of the party …

Radicals And Immigrants: Senator William H. King's Response To Nativism, 1917-1924, Craig D. Galli Jan 1984

Radicals And Immigrants: Senator William H. King's Response To Nativism, 1917-1924, Craig D. Galli

Theses and Dissertations

When Senator William Henry King took office in 1917, Utah and the nation were apprehensive about the presence of large numbers of foreign born aliens and citizens. Utah's King joined the wartime hysteria and promoted many nativistic policies directed against the foreign born population. During the post-war Red Scare he continued his crusade, concentrating on the suppression of Bolsheviks and the Industrial Workers of the World.

But when Congress passed the Immigration Act of 1924--a nativistic law designed to curtail the immigration of southern and eastern Europeans--King was the bill's only opponent from the West or South. Since anti-radicalism and …

State Aid And City Needs: An Examination Of Residual State Aid To Large Cities, John P. Pelissero Jan 1984

State Aid And City Needs: An Examination Of Residual State Aid To Large Cities, John P. Pelissero

Political Science: Faculty Publications and Other Works

Dye and Hurley's (1978) conclusion that the states are somewhat more responsive to city needs than the federal government was questioned on methodological grounds by Ward (1981). The point of contention was Dye and Hurley's use of per capita measures of state/federal aid and urban needs. The research reported here examines state aid to the forty seven largest U.S. cities, and employs residual measures of state aid allocations before and during the urban crisis. Multiple regression of residual state aid on social, economic, or fiscal need indicators shows the states to have been very responsive to city needs over time, …

The Fragmentation Of The Ulster Unionist Party, Declan Lawson George Hall Jan 1984

The Fragmentation Of The Ulster Unionist Party, Declan Lawson George Hall

Masters Theses

In 1973, the Ulster Unionist Party fragmented after fifty years as the dominant party within Northern Ireland. However, this fragmentation did not simply occur in reaction to the events of the 1960's and early 1970's. It was a long ongoing process that can be traced back to the 1940's and 1950's.

This study is concerned with the splintering of the Ulster Unionist Party and the reasons that lay behind the division. The first contention in this thesis is that the Ulster Unionist Party was never the single united political party that it was often supposed to have been. It was …

Political Language And Trust: A Study In Machiavelli And Hobbes, Lauren Wenzel Jan 1984

Political Language And Trust: A Study In Machiavelli And Hobbes, Lauren Wenzel

Honors Papers

It is not possible to discuss politics without assuming a degree, however minimal, of trust. To deny the existence of any trust at all is to assume, as Hobbes does, a war, whether hot or cold, of all against all. While it is possible for people to live in such a condition, they cannot live together in any sense that can be called political. Even in societies which are divided into hostile groups, people either align themselves with a group, expressing their loyalty to its goals. Alternatively, they may withdraw from the political sphere, rejecting it completely, or wait until …

This excerpt from the United States (US) Year-End Senate Report, dated January 1, 1984, includes a section entitled “Accomplishments of the Senate Select Committee on Indian Affairs” that summarizes laws passed and enacted regarding Indigenous People in the United States. The summary covers business pertaining to tribes across the United States, including the note that hearings on Indian health were held in North Dakota, Alaska, Washington, and Montana and that the Indian Health Care Improvement Act was vetoed. The summary indicates that an inheritance and land consolidation code was enacted pertaining to the Sisseton-Wahpeton Sioux Tribe of North and South …

Three Affiliated Tribes V. Wold Engineering (1984), United States Supreme Court, Harry Blackmun Jan 1984

Three Affiliated Tribes V. Wold Engineering (1984), United States Supreme Court, Harry Blackmun

US Government Documents Related to Indigenous Nations

Three Affiliated Tribes v. Wold Engineering is a case that forced the United States (US) Supreme Court to clarify US Public Law 83-280 (typically referred to as Public Law 280). Due to a lack of clarity in US Public Law 280, when the Three Affiliated Tribes attempted to sue Wold Engineering for breach of contract, North Dakota (ND) state courts told the tribes that they were unable to preside over a case between a sovereign nation and a private business. The North Dakota courts held that the tribes would have to give up tribal sovereignty if they wanted to try …

Nationalism And Integration, Allan Harold Moore Jan 1984

Nationalism And Integration, Allan Harold Moore

Theses and Dissertations (Comprehensive)

The hypothesis of the paper is that nationalism and integration are compatible with each other, and only conflict when the integrationist tendencies in society become overbearing. To study the hypothesis to the fullest extent possible, we explored it in both intellectual and concrete terms. Chapter One looks at the literature on nationalism and concludes that it can be used in the integration processes of society. Chapter Two examines how nationalism is treated by the modern proponents of integration. The functionalist, neo-functionalist, federalist and pluralist schools of integration are explored in the chapter. Chapter Three examines the hypothesis in concrete terms …
