Strategic Space Cooperation: U.S. Space Command And The National Guard’S State Partnership Program, David Moore, Jesse Morehouse, Patrick Mitchell
Space and Defense
In 2022, the U.S. Space Command (USSPACECOM) and the National Guard's State Partnership Program (SPP) began pursuing security cooperation objectives while integrating the space domain into greater deterrence efforts. As the newest combatant command (CCMD) with space as its Area of Responsibility (AOR), USSPACECOM has global strategic partnership interests and recognizes the value of the enduring relationships inherent in SPP. This cooperation allows the National Guard to offer its strong relationships, space expertise, and industry knowledge to USSPACECOM. This provides a foundation for USSPACECOM's security cooperation efforts. This article discusses the SPP's role in supporting USSPACECOM's engagement strategy and the …
Arms Control Optimism And Great Power Competition, Damon Coletta
Arms Control Optimism And Great Power Competition, Damon Coletta
Space and Defense
In its unjust war, Russia rakes at Ukrainian civilian targets using dual-capable missiles. China meanwhile tightens the screws on Taiwan as it cements its friendship with Russia and continues its buildup of strategic nuclear warheads.1 Conventional wisdom and U.S. policy under such tense conditions unduly discount expectations for arms control.2 Arms control, in the popular mind, centers on bans in testing or deployment, and is therefore terminally associated with disarmament. Trepidation about disarmament fuels assumptions in polarized democracy, and the United States in particular, about the narrow political conditions under which arms control can succeed during great power competition. Conventional …

Drone-Based, Boost-Phase Intercept Of North Korean Icbms, James D. Wells, William Priedhorsky, Frederick Lamb, Laura Grego
Space and Defense
North Korea currently has an adversarial relationship with the United States and has successfully tested both nuclear weapons and intercontinental-range ballistic missiles (ICBMs) capable of striking the continental United States.1 There are several ways the United States could attempt to address the threat posed by North Korea’s nuclear-armed ICBMs. Historically, the United States has relied on a policy of projecting military strength, fostering strong alliances, and maintaining a credible threat of retaliation to deter adversaries, including those with nuclear weapons, from initiating hostilities. Some have argued that this approach has been instrumental in preventing conflict between nuclear-armed nations, including North …
A Premature Obituary For Conventional Deterrence, Jeffery S. Lehmkuhl
A Premature Obituary For Conventional Deterrence, Jeffery S. Lehmkuhl
Space and Defense
As the United States (US) continues to shift its weight of effort towards great power competition, some scholars and practitioners have questioned the relevance of conventional forces and their ability to deter. Chief among them is Sean McFate, who asserts that “conventional war is unicorn hunting” and that “no one fights that way anymore.”1 Jim Sciutto echoes McFate’s claims in his book The Shadow War and states that the US is losing to Russia and China in a new way of warfare that is conducted below the threshold of conventional warfare.2 Leading Russian General Valery Gerasimov furthered this claim when …
Nuclear Regimes In The 21st Century, Stephen J. Cimbala, Adam Lowther
Nuclear Regimes In The 21st Century, Stephen J. Cimbala, Adam Lowther
Space and Defense
The modern nuclear operations practitioner is facing a more complex future than at any point since the height of the Cold War. Understanding the past, present, and possible future of nuclear force structure and doctrine offers the policy maker a useful way to make sense of unfolding events and place them within a broader context. With China, Russia, and North Korea all posing a growing nuclear risk to the United States, a strong grasp on the available options for countering these threats is certainly important.

The Inspired And The Discouraged: School Board Service And Differential Effects On Political Ambition, Kelly Bergstrand, Beth Anne Shelton, Rebecca E. Deen
Open Initiatives Grant Funded Publications-Archive
Given the national attention on Texas and its school board meetings, we ask—what are the effects of a contentious political atmosphere on desires to run for higher office? Further, how does this experience interact with individual-level traits to affect ambition? To investigate, we distributed a survey to elected school board trustees in Texas and analyzed quantitative and qualitative responses from 380 respondents. We find divergent paths, with some inspired and others deterred from future politics. Specifically, city residents were more affected, positively or negatively, than rural residents. Political newcomers, those feeling qualified, and Democrats were more likely to express higher …
Bigger Than The Whole Sky: Taylor Swift's Impact On American Culture, Politics, And Economics, Mary Moody
Bigger Than The Whole Sky: Taylor Swift's Impact On American Culture, Politics, And Economics, Mary Moody
FHSS Mentored Research Conference
Traditionally feminine interests are often dismissed as trivial, while male-dominated pursuits are widely accepted. However, "feminine" interests shape culture, politics, and the economy in profound ways. Focusing on Taylor Swift and the Eras Tour, my research examines how one woman—and her brand—significantly influence the United States across multiple spheres, challenging the perception of what constitutes impactful culture.
Fear Of Widespread Voter Fraud, William Chester Basnight
Fear Of Widespread Voter Fraud, William Chester Basnight
Student Scholar Symposium Abstracts and Posters
Millions claim the 2020 presidential election was stolen; there was even an insurrection to try and stop the election from being certified. Despite the lack of evidence, too many people trust politicians who claim elections were rigged or stolen. In this paper, I will study the type of person who fears widespread voter fraud, what media sources are pushing voter fraud headlines, as well as the patterns in social media usage when related to fearing voter fraud. I will do this by using the Chapman survey of American fears, a representative national sample of U.S. adults in 2024. I found …

Nuclear Nightmares: The American Fear Of Iranian Nuclear Attacks And Foreign Policy, Tyler Coker
Student Scholar Symposium Abstracts and Posters
In an age of escalating tensions in the Middle East, the American public has to watch with a wary eye for a conflict in which the United States has to get involved overseas. In this paper, I examine the extent to which religiosity influences Americans’ fear of Iranian nuclear attacks. Using Chapman University’s Survey of American Fears, a nationally representative survey asking Americans about what scares them the most, I find an increase in the fear of Iranian nuclear strikes as a respondent’s religiosity increases. In religious circles, fears can be greatly manipulated by the words of a single authority, …

The 21st century has brought with it several instances of domestic and foreign terrorism on the United States. In the post-9/11 world, the general fear of terrorism and the various sources of terror that fall beneath this umbrella term have ballooned to the point of being one of the most prevalent fears in American society during the completion of the 2016 Chapman Survey of American Fears. While it is important to note that significant events such as the rise of ISIS, the Paris and Brussels Attacks, the Pulse Nightclub shooting, and the 2016 Presidential campaign have left individuals among the …
Women’S Fear Of Violent Crime: Examining Media Consumption And Misconceptions Of Violent Crime, Kate Lindfors
Women’S Fear Of Violent Crime: Examining Media Consumption And Misconceptions Of Violent Crime, Kate Lindfors
Student Scholar Symposium Abstracts and Posters
Within the United States, women are disproportionately victimized by crimes of domestic violence (DV) and intimate partner violence (IPV). However, media narratives do not accurately represent the threats that women face within society, and women are often unaware of and lack protection from the forms of violence that they are most commonly subjected to. Therefore, this paper examines how the media frames violent crime and the victimization of women, as well as how underrepresentation and misconceptions contribute to the levels of fear that women feel toward violent crime. Through using data from the Chapman University Survey on American Fears from …

Facing accusations of bribery, abuse of power, and the unethical exchange of political favors for financial gain, Robert Menendez has been urged to resign as a senator. This case has been highlighted through many outlets, yet his case is only one of many instances of political corruption in recent years. This recurring pattern is leaving Americans to have less and less faith in political actors to uphold moral behavior in their position of power.
In this paper, I examine the contrasting perceptions of political influence held by Republicans and Democrats regarding various agents of the political system, including state and …

In today’s world, the news we watch often does more than inform us; it can shape how secure or insecure we feel about our future. In this paper, I examine the extent to which an individual’s consumption of particular Spanish-speaking TV news channels contribute to their sense of financial vulnerability. Using an original data set of responses to the questions in the American National Election Studies (ANES), I find a moderately strong relationship between the television news channel Aquí y Ahora, and the degree to which they are worried about their financial situation. While it is true that various factors …

Whether you're watching the news or scrolling through social media, you are bound to hear about violent crimes. The constant reminder strikes fear within individuals. What many do not realize is that specific individuals are more susceptible to the fear of violent crime than others. Within this paper, I determine how social media usage, level of education, and gender impact an individual's fear of being murdered by either a stranger or someone they know. To do this, I used the Chapman Survey of American Fears. This survey was conducted on a national sample of adults in the U.S. through a …

The Hispanic and Latino populations are the largest ethnic minority in California, and more than 10.4 million Californians consider Spanish their first language. However, English is the primary language in most educational and public spaces. This means Spanish-speaking communities have limited access to coastal ecosystems and learning opportunities about coastal areas impacted by climate change and extreme weather, which becomes a barrier to civic engagement, climate advocacy, and local decision-making. During the 2023 summer, we partnered with local climate advocacy organizations and held educational programs at two public beaches in southern California. The presentations in English and Spanish taught foundational …
How Leadership Styles Impact Lgbtq+ Civil Rights, Milo Thompson
How Leadership Styles Impact Lgbtq+ Civil Rights, Milo Thompson
Theses
Leaders rely on different leadership styles to legitimize their rule and obtain political power. However, these leadership styles have positive or negative impacts for protecting human rights in the LGBTQ+ community. This thesis examines how political leadership styles impact protecting or repressing the civil rights of the LGBTQ+ community. This article argues that constitutionalist leaders who abide by the “rule of law” will better protect LGBTQ+ civil rights than personalist, ideological, or performative leadership styles. Drawing on both qualitative and quantitative research methods, this paper examines how leadership styles impact LGBTQ+ discrimination.

On October 7, 2023, Hamas unleashed a vicious attack on Israeli civilians in the southern part of Israel. The plans for this attack were likely many years in the making. Nine hundred miles of tunnels crisscrossed Gaza with the terrorist infrastructure coinciding with the location of hospitals, school, Mosques and shelters above. On October 6, 2023, the history of the four rounds of Israeli Palestinian negotiations of the earlier part of the twenty-first century had been largely forgotten and completely ignored. The Likud coalition in Israel in 2023 - 2024 was in complete agreement with Hamas’ sponsor that no negotiations …

Abstract:
One of the frequently witnessed barriers to accelerating action on climate change is related to the construction of data bases, variables, and models as well as data extraction. According to the Grantham Research Institute on climate change and the environment, several subfields of Artificial Intelligence identify patterns to support the completion of specific tasks towards combating climate change such as; gathering, completing, and interpreting large, and complete datasets by making it possible to enhance data-driven decision-making for climate action. However, the negative side of AI was also recognized.
Learning algorithms to understand how AI’s climate impact goes beyond its …

Leveraging Green Strategies Within Blockchain Technology For Climate Justice And Displacement Management In Developing Countries: A Comparative Study Between Egypt And Germany (2010-2024), Alaa Owis Seddik Ms
Future Journal of Social Science
Climate change is a significant global issue of the 21st century, disproportionately affecting
developing countries despite their minimal contribution to greenhouse gas emissions. This
discrepancy has brought climate justice to the forefront as an important concept, emphasizing
equitable support and protection for vulnerable populations. Concurrently, blockchain
technology, combined with green strategies, offers potential solutions to enhance transparency,
efficiency, and accountability in various sectors, including climate justice and displacement
management. This research hypothesizes that the integration of blockchain technology with
green strategies can lead to enhanced climate justice, and more effective displacement
management, and provide a model for developing countries like …

Future Journal of Social Science
The world wars-with their different types- had contributed to the launch of many research fields that focused on war and peace studies. However, by the end of the Cold War, attention has been transformed to focus on civil wars, peace reconstruction processes, and human security, to find an answer to whether the scarcity of resources will increase the risk of conflict. Since then, the environment has become a fundamental issue in international politics and has even turned to a source of attraction for the field of international relations. Politicizing and De-politicizing the environment has gained more concern in recent years …

Uncovering The Causal Configurations Of Successful Nonviolent Regime Change Movements: A Systems Thinking And Fuzzy Set Analysis, William Scott Hinson
Dissertations
Under what conditions do nonviolent regime change movements succeed? While the literature on nonviolent resistance has shown several variables to be highly correlative in affecting regime change, little research to date has shown which configuration of conditions leads to regime change in differing polities and repressive environments. In this dissertation, Systems Thinking (ST) and fuzzy set Qualitative Comparative Analysis (fsQCA) are employed to analyze 25 randomly selected cases of nonviolent regime change movements drawn from the NAVCO 2.1 dataset. The principle of equifinality in ST and fsQCA directs the research to explore multiple sets of conditions that can lead to …
The Inclusivity Of Emotional Abuse Definitions And Interest Groups, Alexandria Banning
The Inclusivity Of Emotional Abuse Definitions And Interest Groups, Alexandria Banning
Bridges: A Journal of Student Research
Cases of emotional abuse involving children have been previously associated with long lasting physical and psychological issues among those who experience it. Previous research has linked the significant underreporting of emotional abuse cases with the use of vague and unclear definitions of emotional abuse as it involves minors. Creating a concise and inclusive definition has proven to be difficult because of a lack of physical evidence to support claims, thus each of the 50 US states has a different definition for what constitutes emotional abuse. Why do definitions vary in the first place? Here, I hypothesize that states with more …

Striking A Balance: Market Shock & Responses In Automotive Components Manufacturing, Emma Lane Mcgahey
All Theses
This thesis examines the effects of extreme market shocks on supply chain dynamics within the automotive industry. Through an analysis of demand data from an automotive manufacturer to its component suppliers (January 2018 to May 2024), the study investigates the relationship between market shocks and supply chain responses, providing insights into how auto components inventory management handles downstream responses to market shocks. With supporting public data—from FRED, BLS, and the U.S. Census Bureau resources—we explore two primary relationships: the impact of market shocks on the Average Standard Deviation of Demand (SDO) and the effect of demand variability on expedited pricing …

Wine-Rs Or Losers: Assessing Socio-Economic Impacts Of Eu Regulations On Climate-Exacerbated Plant Diseases And Pests Within Northern Italian Viticulture, Kyley N. Fishman
Undergraduate Honors Theses
As climate change furthers weather events and unprecedented hot and wet seasons, European farmers are amongst those challenged by these threats. Balancing sustainable and traditional practices while maintaining socio-economic stability can be difficult, especially under European Union (EU) agricultural regulations. A key area of concern for some agro-regulations is viticulture, or grape growing, which is amongst the most climate-sensitive agricultural sectors. These agro-regulations address multiple goals, including sustainability, exports, and cultural heritage protection. Yet, to what extent EU climate-driven agricultural regulations influence regional wine-growing operations’ socio-economics remains unclear, particularly in managing climate-aggravated pests and plant diseases. My thesis aims to …
