In popular lore, the failure of Canada’s once-biggest company, Dome Petroleum, was caused by the interventionist policies of the federal government or its misadventures drilling for oil in the Arctic. But these factors acted in varied ways on the company. Rather, corporate finance theories offer more insight into the dynamics that led to Dome’s takeover by the American oil major Amoco in 1988. Dome was unique in its unwillingness to issue new share capital during its growth phase and instead relied on easy debt financing. This study investigates the low political participation of Latinos in the United States, focusing on the strategies used by political parties, campaigns and non-partisan organization to increase voter turnout, as well as the mechanisms through which these strategies affect voting behavior. Current theories of political mobilization provide a solid foundation; however, it is crucial to understand the mechanisms that drive mobilization within the Latino electorate. Through quantitative analysis using multivariate regression on data from the 2020 presidential election, I investigate the relationship between party and campaign contact on individual voting behavior. Against the background of the identity, jurisdictional, and institutional crossroads in which contemporary Ukrainian Orthodoxy finds itself, the authors analyze the mental, value-related, and personal (linked to the “human factor”) influences in Ukraine of the destructive and militant ideology of the “Russian World” (Russkiy Mir), as well as the degree of involvement of leading functionaries of the Ukrainian Orthodox Church in the dissemination of these influences.

Objectives: To investigate whether the 2021 U.S. presidential inauguration contributed to a widening of partisan divides in COVID-19 vaccine attitudes and uptake. Methods: We leverage the presidential inauguration as a natural experiment and analyze data from the Household Pulse Survey and CDC vaccination records. Using a difference-in-differences framework with continuous treatment, we examine how the transition differentially affected state-level vaccine refusal rates and county-level vaccination rates, based on varying levels of partisanship as measured by the Trump-Biden vote gap. Results: Following Biden's inauguration, vaccine refusal declined more in pro-Biden states. Distrust in government and vaccines accounted for approximately 80% of …

This piece looks at whether there has been an increase in ideologically conservative decisions on the High Court, as well as whether the role of institutional factors has gone down. Not all interest groups are created equal. Some groups are created by or with the help of law. Law can confer political power on groups through wealth, rents, concentrated interest, and durability, creating synthetic factions that use their state-given influence to dominate lawmaking. Deregulatory and progressive traditions in public law have long thought differently about laws that empower. A deregulatory tradition sees legal empowerment as a democratic pathology that counsels against lawmaking, citing empowerment concerns as a perennial rhetorical point against consumer protection, environmental protection, and social welfare programs, among others, for fear they will lead to “capture.” At the …

Under Katz v. United States, the Fourth Amendment restricts government actions that infringe upon expectations of privacy that society recognizes as reasonable. This foundational test has long been criticized as circular, both because courts can shape the very expectations they seek to identify through their decisions and because governments can manipulate those expectations to expand the reach of their own power. But how do members of society decide what expectations are reasonable, and how do judges ascertain those expectations? And are expectations of privacy malleable even without deliberate manipulation?

วิทยานิพนธ์นี้ฉบับมีวัตถุประสงค์เพื่อศึกษาปัญหาการตีความถ้อยคำ “การล้มล้างการปกครอง” ของศาลรัฐธรรมนูญแห่งราชอาณาจักรไทย ในช่วงระหว่าง พ.ศ. 2549–2567 โดยใช้ระเบียบวิธีวิจัยเชิงคุณภาพ ผ่านการวิเคราะห์คำสั่งและคำวินิจฉัยของศาลรัฐธรรมนูญจำนวนทั้งสิ้น 12 ฉบับ ซึ่งสามารถจัดจำแนกออกเป็น 4 ประเภทคดี ได้แก่ (1) คดีที่เกี่ยวข้องกับการทุจริตของพรรคการเมืองและกระบวนการเลือกตั้ง (2) คดีที่เกี่ยวข้องกับขบวนการเคลื่อนไหวทางสังคมหรือการชุมนุมทางการเมือง (3) คดีที่เกี่ยวข้องกับการแก้ไขกฎหมายหรือการกระทำทางนิติบัญญัติ และ (4) คดีที่เกี่ยวข้องกับสถาบันพระมหากษัตริย์ ผลการศึกษาพบว่า ศาลรัฐธรรมนูญมีการตีความถ้อยคำ “การล้มล้างการปกครอง” แตกต่างกันไปตามลักษณะของประเภทคดี โดยยังไม่ปรากฏบรรทัดฐานการตีความที่มีความชัดเจนแน่นอนและสม่ำเสมอ นอกจากนี้ แนวการตีความดังกล่าวยังขาดความสอดคล้องกับหลักการและมาตรฐานสากลด้านการพิทักษ์ระบอบประชาธิปไตย ส่งผลให้เกิดความไม่แน่นอนทางกฎหมาย และเปิดช่องให้ศาลรัฐธรรมนูญถูกนำมาใช้เป็นกลไกทางการเมืองมากกว่าการทำหน้าที่ในฐานะองค์กรอิสระที่มีบทบาทในการคุ้มครองคุณค่าพื้นฐานของการปกครองระบอบประชาธิปไตยอันมีพระมหากษัตริย์ทรงเป็นประมุข

This study examines the rhetorical strategies used by coup leaders in Francophone Africa to authorize their actions and garner public support. Focusing on recent military takeovers in Mali, Burkina Faso, and Niger since 2020, I investigate how coup leaders construct narratives of legitimacy within the context of contemporary geopolitical dynamics. I utilize Critical Discourse Analysis (CDA) to analyze speeches by three key coup leaders: Colonel Assimi Goïta, Captain Ibrahim Traoré, and General Abdourahamane Tchiani. The extent to which legislators pursue their privately held preferences in office has important implications for representative democracy and is exceedingly difficult to measure. Many models of legislative decision-making tacitly assume that members are willing and able to carry out the wishes of their constituents so as to maximize their reelection prospects and, in so doing, relegate their personal preferences. This project explores this assumption by examining the role that members' place of birth plays in shaping legislative behavior, apart from other politically relevant factors like partisanship. This study explores how immigration background influences public attitudes toward immigration policy. The study employs social identity theory and assimilation theory, which elucidate how group affiliation and generational proximity influence political attitudes. Drawing on these theories, the study hypothesizes that individuals with closer ancestor migration ties are more likely to show higher levels of support for favorable policies for immigrants compared to those who have more distant ancestor migration ties. Sweden has been lifted as a prominent example of a successful feminist policy enactor, and has built credibility as a humanitarian actor both domestically and transnationally. Simultaneously, intersectionally marginalized groups have attested to patterns of social exclusion and feelings of political disenfranchisement in Swedish society, calling into question Sweden’s reputation for feminist exceptionalism. Current guidance for refugee resettlement agency workers encourages the simultaneous pursuit of trust-building and administrative tasks (e.g., housing, transportation and employment). This dual goal is resource-intensive, and focusing on the former may come at a cost to the latter. The purpose of the current research is to challenge the importance of trust-building by resettlement agencies. Since the first Trump administration, historically marginalized groups in the United States have been subjected to greater instances of bigotry and discrimination due to conservative influence on sociopolitical institutions. These actions suggest a shift in the "Overton Window," whereby policy preferences previously deemed "unacceptable" are given consideration in the mainstream, especially by conservative policy actors. "Project 2025" is a comprehensive plan to restructure the federal government according to conservative dictates in the second Trump administration.
