Taking It To The Street: Designing Archival Walking Tours For Cultural Heritage Months, Catherine M. Fonseca

Faculty & Staff Scholarship

This chapter discusses an archives-based walking tour piloted by a mid-size academic library as part of a campus-wide Hispanic Heritage Month celebration. Drawing on materials from university archives, the event served to highlight Latin@/x historical points of interest across campus. The chapter examines the significance of identity-specific programming for distinct BIPOC groups, details aspects of program planning and implementation, and offers practical suggestions and considerations for librarians seeking to offer similar culturally affirming programming. While the following case study discusses a walking tour event primarily designed to support the needs of Latin@/x students, strategies shared can be applied to walking …

Collaborating To Implement Seamlessaccess: A Library’S Perspective, John Felts

Library Faculty Publications

In the past two years an ever-increasing number of publishers have implemented SeamlessAccess resulting in a better user experience and increased usage. However, to ensure more users benefit from federated authentication and seamless access more collaborations among publishers, libraries, and SeamlessAccess are needed. This brief paper will include a library perspective on the challenges to implementing federated access, the benefits that federated access brings to libraries and to their end-users in their research experience, and a brief walk-through of the SeamlessAccess experience that demonstrates how it enhances federated access.

Fostering Student Connection To The Library: Personal Librarians And First-Year Experience, Loren Mixon, Tracy Conner

Library Faculty Publications

The personal librarian program was embedded into the First Year Student Success classes at Kankakee Community College to ensure freshman instruction in resources and supports available within the library while focusing on creating campus community connections with librarians. As a part of this collaboration, new library curriculum was created to involve students in the library using a variety of different modalities. Students completed an asynchronous assignment connecting typical syllabus elements to library services that may help, a class tour with basic book searching activity, and then a one-on-one meeting with their personal librarian who walked them through database research basics …

Including Voices And Mitigating Bias: Evaluative Practices For Final Interviews, Xan Arch, José Velazco Jan 2024

Including Voices And Mitigating Bias: Evaluative Practices For Final Interviews, Xan Arch, José Velazco

Library Faculty and Staff Publications and Presentations

The chapter discusses the preparation of non-search committee members to participate in an interview process and provide feedback on candidates. Increasingly, as our institutions strive for more inclusive search processes, we are incorporating equitable hiring practices such as implicit bias training for search committee members, rubrics for evaluating candidate applications, and behavior-based interview questions. However, for final interviews, we often throw the door open for general evaluation of candidates by a broad group of people who agree to attend a meeting, presentation, or meal. The feedback we gain from these final interview events may truly be germane to the candidates’ …

Open-Access Publishing In Special Education And Related Fields, Esther R. Lindström, Jesse I. Fleming, Danika Pfeiffer, Tamara Kalandadze, Bryan G. Cook

Speech-Language Pathology Faculty Publications

Open access to research findings, syntheses of research, and papers providing guidance on implementing research-based practices is critical for informing policy and practice in special education and related fields. Yet most published articles are behind paywalls and cannot be accessed freely by many practitioners, policymakers, individuals with disabilities and their families, and other interested parties. In this article, we describe the benefits of open-access publishing for researchers and research consumers, as well as different types of open-access publishing–with a particular focus on self-archiving or green open-access publishing. Self-archiving makes papers freely available, with little time burden and no monetary cost …

Putting The Puzzle Pieces Together: Creatively Connecting Student Support Offices To Students And Each Other, Kate Wimer, Tate Jackson, Jenny Bruxvoort Jan 2024

Putting The Puzzle Pieces Together: Creatively Connecting Student Support Offices To Students And Each Other, Kate Wimer, Tate Jackson, Jenny Bruxvoort

Faculty Publications - George Fox University Library

In late August 2022, Murdock Library was anything but quiet. On one side of the building, a line wound out the door of the Academic Resource Center, where students were racing to create magnetic poetry on the back of sheet pans. On the other side of the building, the library director missed his cornhole target, almost hitting the printing station. His student opponents cheered. Around campus, students raced with cotton balls at Health and Counseling, stacked macaroni boxes at the food pantry, and solved a rebus puzzle at Student Life. Although it may have been an unorthodox scene to some, …

What If There Are No “Good” Sources Of Information? Considering A Paradigm Shift In Information Literacy Instruction, Kate Wimer Jan 2024

What If There Are No “Good” Sources Of Information? Considering A Paradigm Shift In Information Literacy Instruction, Kate Wimer

Faculty Publications - George Fox University Library

The last decade has seen major shifts in culture, the information landscape, and library instruction. For most of that time, librarians have focused on helping students question information sources, in part a reaction to the rise in misinformation and disinformation, and in part in response to specific requests from our communities who look to the library as a source of “good” information. Yet, students are still not critical enough of external information that aligns with previous beliefs, and hypercritical of external information that does not, reinforcing polarized thinking. There has been a paradigm shift in the information environment and among …

Universal Design And Dei, Matthew L. Timko

College of Law Faculty Publications

Universal Design has been used in learning, physical environments, and digital resources to ensure that students and others are able to use the resources and environments to their greatest possible degree. The principles inherent in Universal Design are almost entirely compatible with the principles of Diversity, Equity, Inclusion, and Accessibility policies. This paper aims to draw the connections between the parallel processes and practices, and to demonstrate how enacting policies in one area can also ensure that policies in the other are implemented.

Public Library Lending Programs Increase Radon Testing In Rural Communities, Stacy Stanifer, Kathy Rademacher, Whitney Beckett, King Simpson, Mary Kay Rayens, Amanda Thaxton Wigging, Ellen J. Hahn

UK CARES Faculty Publications

Radon exposure is the second leading cause of lung cancer, yet few Americans test their homes for radon, particularly in rural areas. The academic team and community partners engaged the public library systems in four rural counties to offer digital radon detectors for check-out as a means of increasing the public’s access to free radon testing. The check-out procedures and instructional materials were created through an iterative process, and library personnel were educated on radon and home radon testing prior to launching the lending program. Library patrons reported high usability, feasibility, and acceptability of the program. Library patron- staff interactions …

Thematic Mapping Of Apidae Holdings Within The University Of Arkansas Arthropod Museum, Baylie L. Day, Ashley P.G. Dowling, Austin Jones

Discovery, The Student Journal of Dale Bumpers College of Agricultural, Food and Life Sciences

Museum biological collections store species data that can be utilized in research on biodiversity, environmental change, invasive species, public health, and disease. The University of Arkansas Arthropod Museum, which began in 1905, houses over 750,000 specimens and has not yet been digitized. Making data publicly accessible via the internet makes the data available to the entire scientific community. The goal of this project was to create a digital resource to allow greater access to the University of Arkansas Arthropod Museum holdings. To do so, data from Bombus (bumble bee) and Xylocopa (carpenter bee) specimens were entered into a database in …

The Library Cares About Me: Creating Distinct Spaces To Support Student Wellness And Mental Health, Alison Downey, Rachael Muszkiewicz, Natalie Muskin-Press

Humboldt Journal of Social Relations

In January 2021, the Christopher Center Library at Valparaiso University, commenced a Mental Wellness Initiative to address the growing rates of neurodiversity and mental health concerns that were exacerbated by the COVID-19 pandemic. This initiative started as a simple plan to increase mental wellness resources and then blossomed into a collaborative, cross-departmental approach to offering wellness spaces and programming within the library. The initial plan for the building was a single mindfulness space where students could relax and take a break from studies, but that quickly evolved into an initiative to include four unique spaces within the library, with one …

Same Book, New Tricks: How An Academic-Public Library Partnership Revitalized A Rural Library, Faith L. Bradham, Ariel Dyer

Humboldt Journal of Social Relations

In 2020, many small communities in California’s Central Valley lost their public libraries during the COVID-19 pandemic. Yet, the public library in rural Shafter is thriving today as a result of a unique partnership between the local community college and Shafter: the college provides ongoing library staffing for the city’s library, while the city provides facilities, collections, and oversight for the library. This partnership, though not without its challenges, has provided both Shafter Library and Bakersfield College Library with a singular opportunity to engage multiple communities and expand library access beyond traditional conceptions of an academic or a public library. …
