Engaging First Year Students With Intellectual Property, Marian G. Armour-Gemmen Mar 2020

Engaging First Year Students With Intellectual Property, Marian G. Armour-Gemmen

Faculty & Staff Scholarship

Since intellectual property is so important to engineers, creating enthusiasm from the beginning of their engineering studies is imperative. Since first year students have not learned how to apply technological concepts to real life, demonstrating intellectual property could be a challenge. To engage first year engineering students in the concept and the value of intellectual property, students were introduced to basic concepts and applications. Different concepts were applied to real life examples allowing them to interface with technology from an intellectual property perspective. This paper highlights not only patents, but also trademarks and trade secrets.

The Importance Of Cognitive Domains And The Returns To Schooling In South Africa: Evidence From Two Labor Surveys, Plamen Nikolov, Nusrat Jimi Mar 2020

The Importance Of Cognitive Domains And The Returns To Schooling In South Africa: Evidence From Two Labor Surveys, Plamen Nikolov, Nusrat Jimi

Economics Faculty Scholarship

Numerous studies have considered the important role of cognition in estimating the returns to schooling. How cognitive abilities affect schooling may have important policy implications, especially in developing countries during periods of increasing educational attainment. Using two longitudinal labor surveys that collect direct proxy measures of cognitive skills, we study the importance of specific cognitive domains for the returns to schooling in two samples. We instrument for schooling levels and we find that each additional year of schooling leads to an increase in earnings by approximately 18-20 percent. The estimated effect sizes—based on the two-stage least squares estimates—are above the …

School-Based Support For Families Of Students With Traumatic Brain Injuries, Susan C. Davies Mar 2020

School-Based Support For Families Of Students With Traumatic Brain Injuries, Susan C. Davies

Counselor Education and Human Services Faculty Publications

Families of children with traumatic brain injuries (TBIs) often experience emotional burden related to the sudden onset, intensity, and duration of the recovery process. Family support can improve outcomes; however, parents and siblings of students with TBI often do not receive the help they need, which can impede the injured child’s recovery. This qualitative study involved focus groups with school psychologists who have worked with students with TBIs. Participants were asked about challenges experienced by families of students with TBI and how school psychologists could better support families of children with TBI. Themes included: guilt, change, lack of time and …

Connecting With Undergraduate Research: A Pilot To Tailor Data Literacy Workshops In A Library-Led Summer Undergraduate Research Experience Program, Chao Cai, Megan Sapp Nelson, Chaonan Liu

Libraries Faculty and Staff Presentations

Purdue University Libraries, in collaboration with a research unit, recently proposed to establish a summer undergraduate research experiences (URE) program with an emphasis on data literacy that serves students with limited access to research resources, i.e. underrepresented minorities, students from rural area and community colleges, and students with disabilities. The proposed URE professional development activities related to data literacy, specially data management and data ethics, are designed and tailored to this minority serving URE program based on the recommendations synthesized using reflections from librarians who have taught in data literacy workshops in similar URE programs. In recent years, many federal …

Growing Grit To Produce Doctoral Persistence: A Grounded Theory Study, Melanie Denise Moran Hudson Mar 2020

Growing Grit To Produce Doctoral Persistence: A Grounded Theory Study, Melanie Denise Moran Hudson

Doctoral Dissertations and Projects

The purpose of this systematic grounded theory study was to generate a model explaining how grit and a growth mindset develop and influence doctoral persistence in doctoral completers. The theories guiding this study were Tinto’s (1975) student integration theory of college persistence, Duckworth’s (2016) theory of grit, and Dweck’s (2016) theory of mindset. Interview and reflective journaling data, as well as scores on the Short Grit Scale (Duckworth, 2016) and the Dweck Mindset Instrument (Dweck, 2016), from 12 doctoral completers were analyzed using systematic coding consistent with a grounded theory research design. The central research question of the study was, …

The Most Important Cog In The System: A Case For Legislative Change To Drive Professionalisation, Stacey Webb, Brett A. Best Feb 2020

The Most Important Cog In The System: A Case For Legislative Change To Drive Professionalisation, Stacey Webb, Brett A. Best

Journal of Interpretation

System theory (ST) explains how signal jamming (SJ) may impede or even reverse processes of professionalization, thereby having a detrimental impact on the quality of services clients receive. In the U.K., there are various metaphorical “cogs” in the Sign Language Interpreting (SLI) system. By applying ST to the profession, we can achieve a better understanding of the current landscape and identify ineffective cogs which potentially disrupt the smooth functioning of other cogs within the system. Improving system operations will result in improved services. We argue that an instigating and mandatory force—legislation—is the central cog that will drive more consistent signaling …

Inclusive Audience Analysis And Creating Manageable Content, Carleigh J. Davis, Michelle F. Eble Feb 2020

Inclusive Audience Analysis And Creating Manageable Content, Carleigh J. Davis, Michelle F. Eble

English and Technical Communication Faculty Research & Creative Works

Over the last 15 years, content management systems have dramatically changed the ways we think about our pedagogical approaches to teaching audience analysis. This is especially true when content may need to be reused in a set of discrete contexts for various audiences. This chapter introduces a heuristic that helps students think about, write, and deliver reusable content. Modeled after Ridolfo and DeVoss’s (2009) concept rhetorical velocity, this heuristic introduces students to both how they must consider primary audiences for the content they develop as well as various stakeholders, possible audiences, and potential contexts where their content needs to be …

Come Together: Developing A Successful Cross-Campus Collaboration To Improve The Information Literacy Skills Of Novice Researchers, Denise A. Wetzel, Liz Dunne

Georgia International Conference on Information Literacy

During the 2018-2019 year, Florida State University (FSU) Libraries began a pilot partnership with the FSU’s Center for Undergraduate Research and Academic Engagement (CRE) to create a cross-campus collaboration for undergraduate students in the FSU Undergraduate Research Opportunity Program (UROP), with a heavy emphasis on information literacy. 1st-year, 2nd-year, and new transfer students in this program attend a year long course while learning the basics of research by participating in an individual research project mentored by faculty, staff, post docs, or graduate students on the FSU campus. Developing a successful campus partnership is crucial to the holistic development of undergraduate …

Instructional Scaffolding Of The Acrl Framework For Information Literacy For Developmental Learners., Fabio Montella Feb 2020

Instructional Scaffolding Of The Acrl Framework For Information Literacy For Developmental Learners., Fabio Montella

Georgia International Conference on Information Literacy

Information literacy has become a necessary set of abilities for community college students to possess in this age of digital distribution. The plethora of information that is generated at an almost instantaneous rate has brought about the need for an information-literate student body with the ability to both decipher and utilize viable and valid information. However, the attainment of such abilities requires the comprehension of information literacy core concepts. These concepts, while instrumental, may be difficult to grasp without a foundation of practical familiarity, especially for students in developmental education courses.

In this presentation, Fabio Montella, Assistant Professor of Library …

What do many academic librarians want? Required information literacy classes! When do they want them? Now! This poster will show how a large university developed an on-demand library readiness mini-course online that has recently become a requirement for all undergraduate orientation classes, both in-person and online. Furthermore, the online mini-course has been adopted by numerous faculty in research-based courses across varied subject areas throughout the University. Through a collaboration between librarians and faculty, the mini-course teaches students research skills, how to find books and journal articles, how to use InterLibrary Loan, how to get library and research assistance, and more. …

The Effectiveness Of Library Instruction For Graduate/Professional Students: A Systematic Review And Meta-Analysis, Adelia B. Grabowsky, Liza J. Weisbrod Feb 2020

The Effectiveness Of Library Instruction For Graduate/Professional Students: A Systematic Review And Meta-Analysis, Adelia B. Grabowsky, Liza J. Weisbrod

Georgia International Conference on Information Literacy

Library instruction to improve information literacy (IL) is often considered essential only for undergraduates. However, students in graduate/professional programs do not always have the requisite skills needed for graduate level study and research, which suggests they may also benefit from library instruction targeted specifically to graduate students. This study used a systematic review and meta-analysis to assess the effectiveness of library instruction for increasing IL skills and/or knowledge among graduate and professional students. The authors searched seven databases to identify studies published in English between 2000 and 2019 that reported on library instruction for graduate or professional students, and objectively …

Adapting Information Literacy Course Materials For International Students, Janine L. Carlock, Kelly Sippell Feb 2020

Adapting Information Literacy Course Materials For International Students, Janine L. Carlock, Kelly Sippell

Georgia International Conference on Information Literacy

At Duquesne University, all first-year students take a 1-credit course called Research and Information Skills. This course familiarizes students with each of the topics in the ACRL framework and provides them with practice to promote their understanding of the topics as applied to the research process. Three years ago, our ESL program partnered with the library so that an ESL instructor would teach 1 or 2 sections populated by international students. These sections are smaller (15 students compared to 30 or more) and the material has been adapted to allow for more time for discussion of topics such as plagiarism …

The Struggle Is Real: Helping First-Year And Transfer Students Develop Fundamental Research Skills, Renee Montgomery, Christina C. Wray

Georgia International Conference on Information Literacy

Starting at a new University or College can be exciting and challenging. However, first-year and transfer students may struggle with fundamental research skills, which are not explicitly taught in the classroom. Libraries are in the perfect position to fill this gap. This workshop will explore how to develop an online research skill building series using the University of Central Florida’s experiences with their Research Tips Tuesdays program. The presenters will share how they identified student needs, built campus partnerships and utilized web conferencing software to meet students where they are and when they need it most. At the completion of …

Embedding Information Literacy Support In A Peer Learning Program: An Exploratory Case Study, Jeffery Verbeem, Lynnette Harper

Collaborative Librarianship

The aim of this exploratory study was to investigate how librarians at a public university in Dubai could support the information literacy of student tutors through collaboration with a peer-to-peer learning assistance program. We sought to understand how peer tutors experience, develop and share their information literacy skills. We conducted workshops to help tutors become more aware of information literacy and to develop their fluency and confidence in applying these skills as students and as tutors. Data was gathered via a survey, a focus group and a quiz. Findings indicated that while there may have been some gains made in …

An Evocative Appraisal Of The Awareness, Attitude And Utilisation Of Open Educational Resources At Kumasi Technical University, Joshua Appiah, Harry Barton Essel, Kwesi Opoku Amankwa

Library Philosophy and Practice (e-journal)

Open Educational Resources (OERs) are part of a growing, global movement in open practice in Higher Education; current and potential use of OERs have significant implications for the student in Higher Education. While investment in OERs has been considerable through the Consortium of Academic and Research Libraries in Ghana (CARLIGH), there has not been an evaluation to develop a full understanding of how these Open Educational Resources are perceived and patronized by academic staff and students. The study, therefore, evaluated the awareness, attitude and usage of OERs by students and staff at the Kumasi Technical University. Questionnaires were administered to …
