Infant Feeding Decisions Among Pregnant Black Wic Participants And The Role Of Peer Support, Astrid D. Mickens
Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects
The purpose of this study was to identify the important factors that impact infant feeding decisions among Black women, and to determine whether peer support influences the relationship among theoretical constructs of the social learning theory. A convenience sample of 110 Black pregnant women, ages 18-45, attending Women, Infant and Children (WIC) clinics throughout Riverside and San Bernardino Counties were recruited to participate in the study through the Nutrition Services Department. Eligible participants included pregnant Black WIC clients in any stage of pregnancy.
The survey questions contained information about perceived support, cognitive knowledge, abilities and beliefs regarding breastfeeding. The goal …
Using Regression Models To Analyze Randomized Trials: Asymptotically Valid Hypothesis Tests Despite Incorrectly Specified Models, Michael Rosenblum, Mark J. Van Der Laan
Using Regression Models To Analyze Randomized Trials: Asymptotically Valid Hypothesis Tests Despite Incorrectly Specified Models, Michael Rosenblum, Mark J. Van Der Laan
U.C. Berkeley Division of Biostatistics Working Paper Series
Regression models are often used to test for cause-effect relationships from data collected in randomized trials or experiments. This practice has deservedly come under heavy scrutiny, since commonly used models such as linear and logistic regression will often not capture the actual relationships between variables, and incorrectly specified models potentially lead to incorrect conclusions. In this paper, we focus on hypothesis test of whether the treatment given in a randomized trial has any effect on the mean of the primary outcome, within strata of baseline variables such as age, sex, and health status. Our primary concern is ensuring that such …

Johns Hopkins University, Dept. of Biostatistics Working Papers
We previously showed that lifetime cumulative lead dose, measured as lead concentration in the tibia bone by X-ray fluorescence, was associated with persistent and progressive declines in cognitive function and with decreases in MRI-based brain volumes in former lead workers. Moreover, larger region-specific brain volumes were associated with better cognitive function. These findings motivated us to explore a novel application of path analysis to evaluate effect mediation. Voxel-wise path analysis, at face value, represents the natural evolution of voxel-based morphometry methods to answer questions of mediation. Application of these methods to the former lead worker data demonstrated potential limitations in …
Predictors Of Female Sexual Dysfunction, Julie M. Merrell
Predictors Of Female Sexual Dysfunction, Julie M. Merrell
Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects
Tiefer, Hall, and Tavris (2002) described factors comprising four categories of female sexual dysfunction. They suggested that unique factors need to be examined to understand sexual dysfunction in women. Socio-cultural, political, or economic factors, partner and relationship factors, psychological factors, and medical factors described as aspects of women’s lives that can be the source of sexual dysfunction. The current study examined indicators of the above factors-body shame, relationship satisfaction, sexual self-schema, positive and negative affect, and overall health-as predictors of female sexual dysfunction. The hypotheses were: Body shame and negative affect will be negatively associated with sexual function; and relationship …

False Discovery Rate Analysis Of Brain Diffusion Direction Maps, Armin Schwartzman, Robert F. Dougherty, Jonathan E. Taylor
False Discovery Rate Analysis Of Brain Diffusion Direction Maps, Armin Schwartzman, Robert F. Dougherty, Jonathan E. Taylor
COBRA Preprint Series
Diffusion tensor imaging (DTI) is a novel modality of magnetic resonance imaging that allows non-invasive mapping of the brain’s white matter. A particular map derived from DTI measurements is a map of water principal diffusion directions, which are proxies for neural fiber directions. We consider an experiment in which diffusion direction maps were acquired for two groups of subjects. The objective of the analysis is to find regions of the brain in which the corresponding diffusion directions differ between the groups. This is attained by first computing a test statistic for the difference in direction at every brain location using …
The Association Between Lifestyle Factors And Inflammatory Markers, Kerry Ann Stonebrook
The Association Between Lifestyle Factors And Inflammatory Markers, Kerry Ann Stonebrook
Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects
Background: Cardiovascular disease (CVD) is the leading cause of death for both men and women in the United States. While smoking, high blood pressure, and elevated cholesterol levels are established risk factors for CVD, inflammation is being evaluated as a potential independent risk factor. A key cytokine regulator of the inflammatory response, interleukin-1 (IL-1), has emerged as playing a particularly important role at the genetic level in determining the degree to which the inflammation pathway is turned on. How an individual’s genetic make-up affects inflammation, CVD risk, and response to lifestyle intervention is an area of research that is in …
Power Boosting In Genome-Wide Studies Via Methods For Multivariate Outcomes, Mary J. Emond
Power Boosting In Genome-Wide Studies Via Methods For Multivariate Outcomes, Mary J. Emond
UW Biostatistics Working Paper Series
Whole-genome studies are becoming a mainstay of biomedical research. Examples include expression array experiments, comparative genomic hybridization analyses and large case-control studies for detecting polymorphism/disease associations. The tactic of applying a regression model to every locus to obtain test statistics is useful in such studies. However, this approach ignores potential correlation structure in the data that could be used to gain power, particularly when a Bonferroni correction is applied to adjust for multiple testing. In this article, we propose using regression techniques for misspecified multivariate outcomes to increase statistical power over independence-based modeling at each locus. Even when the outcome …
First Passage Time Problem For Multivariate Jump-Diffusion Processes: Models, Computation, And Applications In Finance, Di Zhang
Theses and Dissertations (Comprehensive)
The first passage time (FPT) problems are ubiquitous in many applications, from physics to finance. Mathematically, such problems are often reduced to the evaluation of the probability density of the time for a process to cross a certain level, a boundary, or to enter a certain region. While in other areas of applications the FPT problems can often be solved analytically, in finance we usually have to resort to the application of numerical procedures, in particular when we deal with jump-diffusion stochastic processes (JDP). The application of the conventional Monte-Carlo procedure is possible for the solution of the resulting model, …

Bayesian Hidden Markov Modeling Of Array Cgh Data, Subharup Guha, Yi Li, Donna Neuberg
Bayesian Hidden Markov Modeling Of Array Cgh Data, Subharup Guha, Yi Li, Donna Neuberg
Harvard University Biostatistics Working Paper Series
Genomic alterations have been linked to the development and progression of cancer. The technique of Comparative Genomic Hybridization (CGH) yields data consisting of fluorescence intensity ratios of test and reference DNA samples. The intensity ratios provide information about the number of copies in DNA. Practical issues such as the contamination of tumor cells in tissue specimens and normalization errors necessitate the use of statistics for learning about the genomic alterations from array-CGH data. As increasing amounts of array CGH data become available, there is a growing need for automated algorithms for characterizing genomic profiles. Specifically, there is a need for …
In Vitro Antimicrobial Efficacy Of Calcium Hydroxides In Root Dentin, Josef W. Lubisich
In Vitro Antimicrobial Efficacy Of Calcium Hydroxides In Root Dentin, Josef W. Lubisich
Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects
Enterococcus faecalis is the most commonly isolated bacteria in failed root canal treatment. Endodontic intracanal medicaments are commonly tested using standardized bovine cylinders infected with bacteria. The literature is not clear on whether calcium hydroxides are able to remove E. faecalis from the dentinal tubules. One reason for this is that there are several varying forms of calcium hydroxide commonly used. The purpose of the present experiment was to determine whether four commonly used calcium hydroxide products were able to reduce E. faecalis from four incremental samples of dentin and to determine if there was a statistically significant difference between …

The Effect Of Calcium Hydroxide Pastes On Root Dentin Fracture Resistance, Kurt W. Sturz
The Effect Of Calcium Hydroxide Pastes On Root Dentin Fracture Resistance, Kurt W. Sturz
Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects
Calcium hydroxide is a common intracanal medicament used in the treatment of immature teeth that have been subjected to trauma or decay prior to root canal therapy. The effect of calcium hydroxide on immature root dentin is important. One area of concern is the effect that calcium hydroxide has on the fracture resistance of an immature tooth. It is the aim of this study to compare the effect of four different commercially available calcium hydroxide pastes on the fracture resistance of bovine teeth. Seventy-five freshly extracted, intact bovine incisors were prepared according to a modified Haapasalo and Orstavik technique. Each …
Semiparametric Bayesian Modeling Of Multivariate Average Bioequivalence, Pulak Ghosh Dr., Mithat Gonen
Semiparametric Bayesian Modeling Of Multivariate Average Bioequivalence, Pulak Ghosh Dr., Mithat Gonen
Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center, Dept. of Epidemiology & Biostatistics Working Paper Series
Bioequivalence trials are usually conducted to compare two or more formulations of a drug. Simultaneous assessment of bioequivalence on multiple endpoints is called multivariate bioequivalence. Despite the fact that some tests for multivariate bioequivalence are suggested, current practice usually involves univariate bioequivalence assessments ignoring the correlations between the endpoints such as AUC and Cmax. In this paper we develop a semiparametric Bayesian test for bioequivalence under multiple endpoints. Specifically, we show how the correlation between the endpoints can be incorporated in the analysis and how this correlation affects the inference. Resulting estimates and posterior probabilities ``borrow strength'' from one another …

Semiparametric Latent Variable Regression Models For Spatio-Temporal Modeling Of Mobile Source Particles In The Greater Boston Area, Alexandros Gryparis, Brent A. Coull, Joel Schwartz, Helen H. Suh
Harvard University Biostatistics Working Paper Series
Traffic particle concentrations show considerable spatial variability within a metropolitan area. We consider latent variable semiparametric regression models for modeling the spatial and temporal variability of black carbon and elemental carbon concentrations in the greater Boston area. Measurements of these pollutants, which are markers of traffic particles, were obtained from several individual exposure studies conducted at specific household locations as well as 15 ambient monitoring sites in the city. The models allow for both flexible, nonlinear effects of covariates and for unexplained spatial and temporal variability in exposure. In addition, the different individual exposure studies recorded different surrogates of traffic …
Multiple Tests Of Association With Biological Annotation Metadata, Sandrine Dudoit, Sunduz Keles, Mark J. Van Der Laan
Multiple Tests Of Association With Biological Annotation Metadata, Sandrine Dudoit, Sunduz Keles, Mark J. Van Der Laan
U.C. Berkeley Division of Biostatistics Working Paper Series
We propose a general and formal statistical framework for the multiple tests of associations between known fixed features of a genome and unknown parameters of the distribution of variable features of this genome in a population of interest. The known fixed gene-annotation profiles, corresponding to the fixed features of the genome, may concern Gene Ontology (GO) annotation, pathway membership, regulation by particular transcription factors, nucleotide sequences, or protein sequences. The unknown gene-parameter profiles, corresponding to the variable features of the genome, may be, for example, regression coefficients relating genome-wide transcript levels or DNA copy numbers to possibly censored biological and …
Autism And Parental Marital Satisfaction: The Role Of Adequacy Of Resources, Geneeta Kaliah Chambers
Autism And Parental Marital Satisfaction: The Role Of Adequacy Of Resources, Geneeta Kaliah Chambers
Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects
The goal of the present study was to expand on the existing literature exploring families with children who have developmental disabilities, particularly autism. Previous studies have been constrained by univariate approaches that have failed to adequately capture the nuances of family functioning. Using an ecological/context approach, stemming from an ongoing research program conducted within a university-based treatment center, the present study attempted to improve on the conceptualization of interrelationships among family members and the role that contextual factors play within that dynamic. Specifically, the present study explored the influence of children’s level of autism on parents’ reports of their marital …

Data Adaptive Pathway Testing, Merrill D. Birkner, Alan E. Hubbard, Mark J. Van Der Laan
U.C. Berkeley Division of Biostatistics Working Paper Series
A majority of diseases are caused by a combination of factors, for example, composite genetic mutation profiles have been found in many cases to predict a deleterious outcome. There are several statistical techniques that have been used to analyze these types of biological data. This article implements a general strategy which uses data adaptive regression methods to build a specific pathway model, thus predicting a disease outcome by a combination of biological factors and assesses the significance of this model, or pathway, by using a permutation based null distribution. We also provide several simulation comparisons with other techniques. In addition, …
Application Of A Variable Importance Measure Method To Hiv-1 Sequence Data, Merrill D. Birkner, Mark J. Van Der Laan
Application Of A Variable Importance Measure Method To Hiv-1 Sequence Data, Merrill D. Birkner, Mark J. Van Der Laan
U.C. Berkeley Division of Biostatistics Working Paper Series
van der Laan (2005) proposed a method to construct variable importance measures and provided the respective statistical inference. This technique involves determining the importance of a variable in predicting an outcome. This method can be applied as an inverse probability of treatment weighted (IPTW) or double robust inverse probability of treatment weighted (DR-IPTW) estimator. A respective significance of the estimator is determined by estimating the influence curve and hence determining the corresponding variance and p-value. This article applies the van der Laan (2005) variable importance measures and corresponding inference to HIV-1 sequence data. In this data application, protease and reverse …
Estimating A Treatment Effect With Repeated Measurements Accounting For Varying Effectiveness Duration, Ying Qing Chen, Jingrong Yang, Su-Chun Cheng
Estimating A Treatment Effect With Repeated Measurements Accounting For Varying Effectiveness Duration, Ying Qing Chen, Jingrong Yang, Su-Chun Cheng
UW Biostatistics Working Paper Series
To assess treatment efficacy in clinical trials, certain clinical outcomes are repeatedly measured for same subject over time. They can be regarded as function of time. The difference in their mean functions between the treatment arms usually characterises a treatment effect. Due to the potential existence of subject-specific treatment effectiveness lag and saturation times, erosion of treatment effect in the difference may occur during the observation period of time. Instead of using ad hoc parametric or purely nonparametric time-varying coefficients in statistical modeling, we first propose to model the treatment effectiveness durations, which are the varying time intervals between the …
Modeling Differentiated Treatment Effects For Multiple Outcomes Data, Hongfei Guo, Karen Bandeen-Roche
Modeling Differentiated Treatment Effects For Multiple Outcomes Data, Hongfei Guo, Karen Bandeen-Roche
Johns Hopkins University, Dept. of Biostatistics Working Papers
Multiple outcomes data are commonly used to characterize treatment effects in medical research, for instance, multiple symptoms to characterize potential remission of a psychiatric disorder. Often either a global, i.e. symptom-invariant, treatment effect is evaluated. Such a treatment effect may over generalize the effect across the outcomes. On the other hand individual treatment effects, varying across all outcomes, are complicated to interpret, and their estimation may lose precision relative to a global summary. An effective compromise to summarize the treatment effect may be through patterns of the treatment effects, i.e. "differentiated effects." In this paper we propose a two-category model …
Semiparametric Estimation In General Repeated Measures Problems, Xihong Lin, Raymond J. Carroll
Semiparametric Estimation In General Repeated Measures Problems, Xihong Lin, Raymond J. Carroll
Harvard University Biostatistics Working Paper Series
This paper considers a wide class of semiparametric problems with a parametric part for some covariate effects and repeated evaluations of a nonparametric function. Special cases in our approach include marginal models for longitudinal/clustered data, conditional logistic regression for matched case-control studies, multivariate measurement error models, generalized linear mixed models with a semiparametric component, and many others. We propose profile-kernel and backfitting estimation methods for these problems, derive their asymptotic distributions, and show that in likelihood problems the methods are semiparametric efficient. While generally not true, with our methods profiling and backfitting are asymptotically equivalent. We also consider pseudolikelihood methods …
The Outcome Of Mta As A Root End Filling Material: A Long Term Evaluation, Christopher M. Sechrist
The Outcome Of Mta As A Root End Filling Material: A Long Term Evaluation, Christopher M. Sechrist
Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects
Periradicular surgery is a viable option to save natural teeth when non-surgical treatment fails or when endodontic retreatment is not feasible or contraindicated. Laboratory and animal studies have demonstrated that MTA is biocompatible, provides an excellent seal against penetrating bacteria, and promotes hard tissue healing. The purpose of this study was to provide long term (>3 years) clinical evidence for its use as a root-end filling material in endodontics. The clinical records of 294 patients who had MTA used during endodontic treatment from 1996 to 2001 were reviewed. From these, 75 patients whose root end cavities had been filled …
