Solutions To A Nonlinear Drift-Diffusion Model Of Semiconductors, Weifu Fang, Kazufumi Ito May 1999

Solutions To A Nonlinear Drift-Diffusion Model Of Semiconductors, Weifu Fang, Kazufumi Ito

Mathematics and Statistics Faculty Publications

A nonlinear drift-diffusion model for semiconductors is analyzed to show the existence of non-vacuum global solutions and stationary solutions. The long time behavior of the solutions is studied by establishing the existence of an absorbing set and a compact attractor of the dynamical system. Parallel results on vacuum solutions are also obtained under weaker conditions on model parameters.

Anticommuting Derivations, Steen Pedersen

Mathematics and Statistics Faculty Publications

We show that the re are no non-trivial closable derivations of a C*-algebra anticommuting with an ergodic action of a compact group, supposing that the set of squares is dense in the group. We also show that the re are no non-trivial closable densely defined rank one derivations on any C*-algebra.

Bayes Estimation Of A Distribution Function Using Ranked Set Samples, Paul H. Kvam, Ram C. Tiwari Jan 1999

Bayes Estimation Of A Distribution Function Using Ranked Set Samples, Paul H. Kvam, Ram C. Tiwari

Department of Math & Statistics Faculty Publications

Aranked set sample (RSS), if not balanced, is simply a sample of independent order statistics generated from the same underlying distribution F. Kvam and Samaniego (1994) derived maximum likelihood estimates of F for a general RSS. In many applications, including some in the environmental sciences, prior information about F is available to supplement the data-based inference. In such cases, Bayes estimators should be considered for improved estimation. Bayes estimation (using the squared error loss function) of the unknown distribution function F is investigated with such samples. Additionally, the Bayes generalized maximum likelihood estimator (GMLE) is derived. An iterative scheme based …

A Quantile‐Based Approach For Relative Efficiency Measurement, Paul M. Griffin, Paul H. Kvam Jan 1999

A Quantile‐Based Approach For Relative Efficiency Measurement, Paul M. Griffin, Paul H. Kvam

Department of Math & Statistics Faculty Publications

Two popular approaches for efficiency measurement are a non‐stochastic approach called data envelopment analysis (DEA) and a parametric approach called stochastic frontier analysis (SFA). Both approaches have modeling difficulty, particularly for ranking firm efficiencies. In this paper, a new parametric approach using quantile statistics is developed. The quantile statistic relies less on the stochastic model than SFA methods, and accounts for a firm's relationship to the other firms in the study by acknowledging the firm's influence on the empirical model, and its relationship, in terms of similarity of input levels, to the other firms.

Fisher Information In Weighted Distributions, Satish Iyengar, Paul H. Kvam, Harshinder Singh Jan 1999

Fisher Information In Weighted Distributions, Satish Iyengar, Paul H. Kvam, Harshinder Singh

Department of Math & Statistics Faculty Publications

Standard inference procedures assume a random sample from a population with density fμ(x) for estimating the parameter μ. However, there are many applications in which the available data are a biased sample instead. Fisher modeled biased sampling using a weight function w(x) ¸ 0, and constructed a weighted distribution with a density fμw(x) that is proportional to w(x)fμ(x). In this paper, we assume that fμ(x) belongs to an exponential family, and study the Fisher information about μ in observations obtained from some commonly arising weighted distributions: (i) the kth order …

A Structural Result Of Irreducible Inclusions Of Type Iii Lambda Factors, Lambda Is An Element Of (0,1), Phan Loi Sep 1998

A Structural Result Of Irreducible Inclusions Of Type Iii Lambda Factors, Lambda Is An Element Of (0,1), Phan Loi

Mathematics and Statistics Faculty Publications

Given an irreducible inclusion of factors with finite index N ⊂ M, where M is of type IIIλ1/m, N of type IIIλ1/n, 0 < λ < 1, and m,n are relatively prime positive integers, we will prove that if N ⊂ M satisfies a commuting square condition, then its structure can be characterized by using fixed point algebras and crossed products of automorphisms acting on the middle inclusion of factors associated with N ⊂ M. Relations between N ⊂ M and a certain G-kernel on subfactors are also discussed.

Evolution Of Mixed-State Regions In Type-Ii Superconductors, Chaocheng Huang, Tom Svobodny Jul 1998

Evolution Of Mixed-State Regions In Type-Ii Superconductors, Chaocheng Huang, Tom Svobodny

Mathematics and Statistics Faculty Publications

A mean-field model for dynamics of superconducting vortices is studied. The model, consisting of an elliptic equation coupled with a hyperbolic equation with discontinuous initial data, is formulated as a system of nonlocal integrodifferential equations. We show that there exists a unique classical solution in C1+α(Ω0) for all t > Ω, where Ω0 is the initial vortex region that is assumed to be in C1+α. Consequently, for any time t, the vortex region Ωt is of C1+α, and the vorticity is in Cα(Ωt).

On The Product Of Two Generalized Derivations, Mohamed Barraa, Steen Pedersen Sep 1997

On The Product Of Two Generalized Derivations, Mohamed Barraa, Steen Pedersen

Mathematics and Statistics Faculty Publications

Two elements A and B in a ring R determine a generalized derivation deltaA,B on R by setting δA,B(X) = AX - XA for any X in R. We characterize when the product δC,DδA,B is a generalized derivation in the cases when the ring R is the algebra of all bounded operators on a Banach space epsilon, and when R is a C*-algebra U. We use the se characterizations to compute the commutant of the range of δA,B.

Hypersurfaces In R-D And The Variance Of Exit Times For Brownian Motion, Kimberly Kinateder, Patrick Mcdonald

Mathematics and Statistics Faculty Publications

Using the first exit time for Brownian motion from a smoothly bounded domain in Euclidean space, we define two natural functionals on the space of embedded, compact, oriented, unparametrized hypersurfaces in Euclidean space. We develop explicit formulas for the first variation of each of the functionals and characterize the critical points.

Analysis Of Repeated Measures Data Under Circular Covariance, Andrew Montgomery Hartley Jan 1997

Analysis Of Repeated Measures Data Under Circular Covariance, Andrew Montgomery Hartley

Mathematics & Statistics Theses & Dissertations

Circular covariance is important in modelling phenomena in epidemiological, communications and numerous physical contexts. We introduce and develop a variety of methods which make it a more versatile tool. First, we present two classes of estimators for use in the presence of missing observations. Using simulations, we show that the mean squared errors of the estimators of one of these classes are smaller than those of the Maximum Likelihood (ML) estimators under certain conditions. Next, we propose and discuss a parsimonious, autoregressive type of circular covariance structure which involves only two parameters. We specify ML and other types of estimators …

Self-Consistency: A Fundamental Concept In Statistics, Thaddeus Tarpey, Bernard Flury Aug 1996

Self-Consistency: A Fundamental Concept In Statistics, Thaddeus Tarpey, Bernard Flury

Mathematics and Statistics Faculty Publications

The term ''self-consistency'' was introduced in 1989 by Hastie and Stuetzle to describe the property that each point on a smooth curve or surface is the mean of all points that project orthogonally onto it. We generalize this concept to self-consistent random vectors: a random vector Y is self-consistent for X if E[X|Y] = Y almost surely. This allows us to construct a unified theoretical basis for principal components, principal curves and surfaces, principal points, principal variables, principal modes of variation and other statistical methods. We provide some general results on self-consistent random variables, give …

Stability Analysis Of A Model For The Defect Structure Of Yba2cu3ox, Gregory Kozlowski, Tom Svobodny Apr 1996

Stability Analysis Of A Model For The Defect Structure Of Yba2cu3ox, Gregory Kozlowski, Tom Svobodny

Physics Faculty Publications

Unusual microstructures of YBa2Cu3Ox (123) crystals have been observed. These structures have been shown to pass very high transport currents. A model of the solidification of 123 from a melt with Y2BaCuO5 (211) inclusions indicates that the stability of the 123 interface can depend on the sizes of the 211 inclusions. The observed formations are interpreted in the light of this instability.

A Center-Unstable Manifold Theorem For Parametrically Excited Surface Waves, Larry Turyn Jan 1996

A Center-Unstable Manifold Theorem For Parametrically Excited Surface Waves, Larry Turyn

Mathematics and Statistics Faculty Publications

When fluid in a rectangular tank sits upon a platform which is oscillating with sufficient amplitude, surface waves appear in the ''Faraday resonance.'' Scientists and engineers have done bifurcation analyses which assume that there is a center manifold theory using a finite number of excited spatial modes. We establish such a center manifold theorem for Xiao-Biao Lin's model in which potential flow is assumed but an artificial dissipation term is included in the system of partial differential equations on the free surface. We use interpolation spaces developed by da Prate and Grisvard, establish maximal regularity for a family of evolution …

The Support Of Measure-Valued Branching Processes In A Random Environment, Donald A. Dawson, Yi Li, Carl Mueller Oct 1995

The Support Of Measure-Valued Branching Processes In A Random Environment, Donald A. Dawson, Yi Li, Carl Mueller

Mathematics and Statistics Faculty Publications

We consider the one-dimensional catalytic branching process introduced by Dawson and Fleischmann, which is a modification of the super Brownian motion. The catalysts are given by a nonnegative infinitely divisible random measure with independent increments. We give sufficient conditions for the global support of the process to be compact, and sufficient conditions for noncompact global support. Since the catalytic process is related to the heat equation, compact support may be surprising. On the other hand, the super-Brownian motion has compact global support. We find that all nonnegative stable random measures lead to compact global support, and we give an example …

Stability Of Growing Front Of Yba(2)Cu(3)O(X) Superconductor In The Presence Of Pt And Ceo(2) Additions, Gregory Kozlowski, Tom Svobodny

Physics Faculty Publications

Distinctive microstructures of textured YBa2Cu3Ox (123) superconductors were examined by scanning electron microscopy and metallurgical microscopy. The samples were synthesized under a residual thermal gradient by using a modified melt textured growth on a Y2BaCuO5 (211) substrate. Also, the unidirectional solidification by a zone‐melting method was performed to fabricate 123 superconducting bars up to 12 cm long placed on the 211 substrate in the horizontal arrangement, with a growth rate R=0.5 mm/h and a temperature gradient of G=20 °C/cm (G/R=400 °C h/cm2). A ramping …

Free-Boundary Problems For Potential And Stokes Flows Via Nonsmooth Analysis, Srdjan Stojanovic, Tom Svobodny May 1995

Free-Boundary Problems For Potential And Stokes Flows Via Nonsmooth Analysis, Srdjan Stojanovic, Tom Svobodny

Mathematics and Statistics Faculty Publications

A new approach to some free boundary problems of the type of jets and cavities for potential flows is introduced. Both potential and Stokes flows are considered. The variable domain problems are relaxed so that they become nonsmooth optimization problems on fixed domains for somewhat singular state equations. State equations are considered, and multivalued generalized gradients of the variational functionals are studied. The method is constructive.

Reconstruction Of Semiconductor Doping Profile From Lbic Image, Weifu Fang, Kazufumi Ito Aug 1994

Reconstruction Of Semiconductor Doping Profile From Lbic Image, Weifu Fang, Kazufumi Ito

Mathematics and Statistics Faculty Publications

In this paper, the authors study the reconstruction of a semiconductor doping profile or, equivalently, the equilibrium potential, from its LBIC (laser-beam-induced current) image. For the one-dimensional case, the authors first characterize the attainable class of current measurements, and from this they show the nonuniqueness of the inverse problem. Then the reconstruction of the equilibrium potential is reduced to finding two constants subject to some constraints. A reconstruction algorithm is established based on a least squares formulation of the problem. The case of noise-collapsed data is also discussed. For a special case of two-dimensional domain, the authors apply the one-dimensional …
