Beyond Standard Model: Axial Electric Potentials Of Quarks And Neutrinos, Polievkt Perov
Beyond Standard Model: Axial Electric Potentials Of Quarks And Neutrinos, Polievkt Perov
College of Arts & Sciences Faculty Works
The equations of axial electric potentials are presented for our models of quarks and neutrinos as spinning composite structures where up to 3 basic elementary charges are on the axis or rotation and the other N charges are revolving about the axis. The axial potential functions at given point on the axis of rotation were calculated as the sum of electric potentials at that point from all the charges in the structure. We applied these general equations specifically to the models of two types of neutral particles (neutrinos), one with 2 like charges on the axis and the other with …
Degradation Of The Mechanical Properties And Hydrogen Generation In Cement Under Gamma Irradiation Assessed By Atomistic Simulation, Omar Al Najjar
Degradation Of The Mechanical Properties And Hydrogen Generation In Cement Under Gamma Irradiation Assessed By Atomistic Simulation, Omar Al Najjar
Theses and Dissertations
Although understanding the effect of the gamma-ray on cement-based materials is essential for many applications, such as the concrete contaminate of nuclear reactors or the storage of radioactive waste in cement-based waste forms, such understanding is still not fully developed. The importance of having such an understanding is becoming of utmost importance, especially with calls to extend the lifetime of nuclear power plants, and also due to some recent incidents of failures of the concrete structure in the nuclear fields. In this work, the details of preparing three molecular models as a representative structure of the main binding phase of …

Developing A Remote Gamma-Ray Spectra Collection System (Rgscs) By Coupling A High Purity Germanium (Hpge) Detector With A Cosmicguard Background Reduction Device, Zaijing Sun, Krishnakumar Divakar Nangeelil, Haven Searcy
Health Physics and Diagnostic Sciences Faculty Research
Despite being widely used for high-resolution spectral analysis and quantifying low activity in natural samples, the operations and data analysis of High Purity Germanium (HPGe) gamma-ray detectors are seldom fully automated due to the excessive costs associated with commercially available automatic sample changing systems. This paper introduces the design and implementation of a cost-effective, customized remote gamma-ray spectra collection system centered around the HPGe detector coupled to a cosmic-ray veto background reduction device. The HPGe detector system, equipped with a Lynx DSA, is seamlessly integrated with an economically viable automatic sample changer. This sample vial changer is controlled by a …

From Norms Taker To Norms Breaker: A Comparative Study Of Turkey’S Nuclear Discourses Before And After The Ostensible Coup Of 2016, Sarah Tzinieris, Zenobia S. Homan, Cem Boke, Amna Javed
International Journal of Nuclear Security
This article offers an analysis of public statements made by Turkish government leaders, contrasting official attitudes on nuclear nonproliferation before and after the alleged military coup attempt in 2016. Significant developments in this period include deteriorating democracy and the rule of law in Turkey and the emergence of destabilizing foreign policy differences between Turkey and Western states. President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan also sought to consolidate domestic power and play a more assertive security role in the Middle East. This analysis of official statements reveals a distinct shift in Turkey’s nonproliferation rhetoric after the 2016 coup. In particular, Turkish government ministers …
Beyond Standard Model: Structure Factors Of Models Of Different Quarks And Neutrinos As Spinning Structures Made Of Basic Fractional Charges +- E/3, Polievkt Perov
College of Arts & Sciences Faculty Works
We consider a possible line of “elementary” particles as composite spinning structures made of just two basic elementary particles of charges + e/3 and -e/3. In considered structures, up to 3 basic charges can be on the axis of rotation and other charges can be in a revolving motion about the axis. In addition to the simplest structures of quarks, an electron and a neutral particle containing mostly one or no charges on the axis of rotation, suggested initially in [4], we analyze possible spatial structures of spinning composite particles having 2 or 3 charges on the axis of rotation. …

The Energy Spectrum Of Kaon From Lattice Qcd, Arunangshu Bora, Anirban Mandal, Shreya Mittal, Mihir N. Pandey, Rohan Rana, Harsh Saxena, Priyajit Jana, Rijul Dhumane, Tanmoy Bhowmik
2024 REYES Proceedings
This study presents the analysis of data related to the two-point function of kaon generated from lattice QCD simulations. Using gauge configurations of twisted-mass fermions, we obtain the correlation functions for 6 values of momentum for the kaon between 0 and 2 GeV (both inclusive), we use statistical techniques such as jackknife resampling to derive the energy of the particle. The lattice results are compared to the continuum dispersion relation for the particle, to assess systematic uncertainties in the lattice data. We establish consistency with theory by comparing our results with the theoretical predictions.

The Energy Spectrum Of The Pion From Lattice Qcd, Dilan Arik, Navneeth C, Sufiyan Mirza, Ameer Mustafa, Debarshi Mukherjee, Rajath R, Anantha Srinivasan, Preksha Uniyal, Martha Constantinou
2024 REYES Proceedings
In this report, computational techniques are employed to extract the energy eigenvalues of the pion from two-point correlation function data that has been simulated using the lattice formulation of Quantum Chromodynamics (QCD) across various momentum values for the particle. The analysis focuses on systematically obtaining these eigenvalues to understand better the behavior of the pion under different kinematic conditions. Once extracted, these energy eigenvalues obtained through plateau fitting of the Energy vs Time graph, are utilized to plot the dispersion relation of the pion. This resulting dispersion relation is then compared with theoretical predictions to assess the accuracy and validity …
Nuclear Physics And Neutron Stars: Structure Of Compact Stellar Objects, Michel Geralddi Coria Magaña
Nuclear Physics And Neutron Stars: Structure Of Compact Stellar Objects, Michel Geralddi Coria Magaña
2024 REYES Proceedings
The Tolman-Oppenheimer-Volkoff (TOV) equations provide a theoretical framework for modeling the structure of neutron stars and white dwarfs in hydrostatic equilibrium. Using Python and MATLAB, we simulate the mass-radius relationship, pressure, and density profiles of these compact stars, focusing on how ionized plasma dynamics contribute to their stability. By incorporating particle simulations into the visualization process, we model the internal forces of neutron stars and white dwarfs, demonstrating how computational tools offer unique insights into these celestial objects. The results align well with theoretical predictions and provide a solid foundation for future studies incorporating additional physical effects such as magnetic …
A Computational Study On The Structural Limits Of Neutron Stars Under Relativistic Conditions And Nuclear Phenomena, Marcelo Siles
A Computational Study On The Structural Limits Of Neutron Stars Under Relativistic Conditions And Nuclear Phenomena, Marcelo Siles
2024 REYES Proceedings
This project investigates the modeling of neutron stars and white dwarfs using polytropic equations of state and relativistic corrections. By integrating relativistic effects into the Tolman-Oppenheimer-Volkoff (TOV) equations, we obtain more accurate predictions of neutron star properties, including mass-radius relationships and neutron degeneracy pressure. Non-relativistic models are inadequate under high pressures. Considering nucleon-nucleon interactions suggests that neutron stars can surpass the Tolman-Oppenheimer-Volkoff limit, theoretically reaching masses up to 2.3 𝑀⊙. However, empirical data supports a more realistic mass range of 1.5 to 2.3 𝑀⊙. The inclusion of neutron star crust modeling refines these predictions, indicating possible …

A Review At Two Nuclear Reactor Problems In Asia, Victor Christianto, Florentin Smarandache
Branch Mathematics and Statistics Faculty and Staff Publications
The development of nuclear power plants (NPP) is often a heated debate, especially in developing countries [1]. In relation to this, it is worth the public's attention that lately, it seems that there have been increasingly frequent press releases from various parties representing the government regarding plans to build the first nuclear fission reactor in Indonesia in the not too distant future. Reportedly there will be a large amount of additional energy supply planned (around 100 GW to be built in Indonesia within the coming decade). For this reason, the authors would like to invite readers to take a moment …
Improving The Accuracy And Practicality Of Patient-Specific Dosimetry In 177lu Radiopharmaceutical Therapies, Avery Britvec Peterson
Improving The Accuracy And Practicality Of Patient-Specific Dosimetry In 177lu Radiopharmaceutical Therapies, Avery Britvec Peterson
Wayne State University Dissertations
Radiopharmaceutical therapies (RPTs) have their roots in the initial discoveries of radiation and radiotherapy at the turn of the 20th century, but recent interest in the 177Lu- based RPTs 177Lu-DOTATATE and 177Lu-PSMA-617 have highlighted the need to investigate patient-specific, dosimetry-guided approaches to planning these therapies. These RPTs are currently administered in “one-size-fits-all” regimens of fixed activity injections and current dosimetry methodologies often have large uncertainties and are reliant upon reference values that do not necessarily apply to all patients. In this work, several ways to make patient-specific dosimetry in 177Lu-DOTATATE and 177Lu-PSMA- 617 RPTs more accurate or more accessible are …

Jets And Underlying Event In √S_Nn = 200 Gev P+Au Collisions At Rhic, Veronica Verkest
Wayne State University Dissertations
Small collision systems, such as that between a proton or deuteron and a heavy-ion, were originally studied to assess cold nuclear matter (CNM) effects but have produced surprising results at RHIC and the LHC over the last several years. Namely, observations of jet yield suppression (enhancement) in central (peripheral) p/d+A events have motivated further investigations into small systems, including the search for signs of Quark-Gluon Plasma (QGP) formation. This thesis focuses primarily on an analysis of correlations of hard and soft particle production in √s_NN = 200 GeV p+Au collisions in STAR. Jets and Underlying Event (UE) are measured at …
Novel Time Projection Chamber Techniques With Applications Towards Neutrinoless Double Beta Decay Searches, Nicholas K. Byrnes
Novel Time Projection Chamber Techniques With Applications Towards Neutrinoless Double Beta Decay Searches, Nicholas K. Byrnes
Physics Dissertations - Archive
One of the highest priority endeavors in nuclear and particle physics is the search for Neutrinoless Double Beta Decay (0νββ). The observation of 0νββ would prove that the neutrino is a Majorana particle i.e. its own antiparticle, offering a mechanism by which the matter-antimatter asymmetry observed in our universe could be explained. This theoretical decay mechanism is only energetically favored in certain neutron-rich isotopes and, if found, would be the rarest decay process ever observed. To compete with the exceedingly long half-life of 0νββ, all contemporary searches are focused on the following detector performance metrics: Increasing the instrumented isotopic mass …
Global Analysis Of The Neutron Magnetic Form Factor, Joseph P. Jayne
Global Analysis Of The Neutron Magnetic Form Factor, Joseph P. Jayne
Honors Theses and Capstones
Protons and neutrons, the nucleons, are made up of smaller particles called quarks. Nucleons have three valence quarks, which are the dominant contributors to its properties, as well as sea quarks (quark-antiquark pairs) and gluons. The distribution of the charge and magnetization of these particles is described by the electric and magnetic form factors. These form factors can be measured with scattering experiments since they directly affect the particle’s cross section. Neutron form factors are challenging to measure because a pure neutron target will decay very fast and is not viable for experiments. Instead, targets like 2H and 3H are …

In the current study, an ab initio derivation of the neutron self-shielding factor to solve the complex neutron transport problem of the decrease of the neutron flux as it penetrates into a material placed in an isotropic neutron field having equal flux in all directions. The theory of steady-state neutron transport was employed, starting from Stuart’s formula, to derive simple analytical formulae based on the integral cross-section parameters. The formulae could be adopted by the user according to various variables, such as the neutron flux distribution and geometry of the simulation at hand. The concluded formulae of the self-shielding factors …

The electromagnetic form factors of the proton and neutron encode information on the spatial structure of their charge and magnetization distributions. While measurements of the proton are relatively straightforward, the lack of a free neutron target makes measurements of the neutron’s electromagnetic structure more challenging and more sensitive to experimental or model-dependent uncertainties. Various experiments have attempted to extract the neutron form factors from scattering from the neutron in deuterium, with different techniques providing different, and sometimes large, systematic uncertainties. We present results from a novel measurement of the neutron magnetic form factor using quasielastic scattering from the mirror nuclei …

This White Paper presents an overview of the current status and future perspective of QCD research, based on the community inputs and scientific conclusions from the 2022 Hot and Cold QCD Town Meeting. We present the progress made in the last decade toward a deep understanding of both the fundamental structure of the sub-atomic matter of nucleon and nucleus in cold QCD, and the hot QCD matter in heavy ion collisions. We identify key questions of QCD research and plausible paths to obtaining answers to those questions in the near future, hence defining priorities of our research over the coming …

We investigate the rf performance of several single-cell superconducting radio-frequency cavities subjected to low temperature heat treatment in nitrogen environment. The cavities were treated at temperature 120–165 °C for an extended period of time (24–48 h) either in high vacuum or in a low partial pressure of ultrapure nitrogen. The improvement in 𝑄0 with a 𝑄 rise was observed when nitrogen gas was injected at ∼300 °C during the cavity cooldown from 800 °C and held at 165 °C, without any degradation in accelerating gradient over the baseline performance. The treatment was applied to several elliptical cavities with frequency ranging …

Machine learning-based jet classifiers are able to achieve impressive tagging performance in a variety of applications in high-energy and nuclear physics. However, it remains unclear in many cases which aspects of jets give rise to this discriminating power, and whether jet observables that are tractable in perturbative QCD such as those obeying infrared-collinear (IRC) safety serve as sufficient inputs. In this article, we introduce a new classifier, Jet Flow Networks (JFNs), in an effort to address the question of whether IRC unsafe information provides additional discriminating power in jet classification. JFNs are permutation-invariant neural networks (deep sets) that take as …

We report on the results of the first search for the production of axion-like particles (ALPs) via Primakoff production on nuclear targets, ᵧA → aA, in the "SRC-CT" experiment using the GlueX detector at Jefferson Lab. This search uses an integrated luminosity of 100 pb-1 center dot nucleon on a C-12 target with a real photon beam of energies 6 < Eᵧ < 10.8 GeV, and explores the mass region of 200 < m(a) < 450 MeV via the decay a → ᵧᵧ. This mass range is between the pi0 and η meson masses, which enables the use of the measured η meson production rate to obtain absolute bounds on the ALP production with reduced sensitivity to …

Generative artificial intelligence is a fast-growing area of research offering various avenues for exploration in high-energy nuclear physics. In this work, we explore the use of generative models for simulating electron-proton collisions relevant to experiments like the Continuous Electron Beam Accelerator Facility and the future Electron-Ion Collider (EIC). These experiments play a critical role in advancing our understanding of nucleons and nuclei in terms of quark and gluon degrees of freedom. The use of generative models for simulating collider events faces several challenges such as the sparsity of the data, the presence of global or eventwide constraints, and steeply falling …

This review paper describes the energy-upgraded Continuous Electron Beam Accelerator Facility (CEBAF) accelerator. This superconducting linac has achieved 12 GeV beam energy by adding 11 new high-performance cryomodules containing 88 superconducting cavities that have operated cw at an average accelerating gradient of 20 MV/m. After reviewing the attributes and performance of the previous 6 GeV CEBAF accelerator, we discuss the upgraded CEBAF accelerator system in detail with particular attention paid to the new beam acceleration systems. In addition to doubling the acceleration in each linac, the upgrade included improving the beam recirculation magnets, adding more helium cooling capacity to …

We present a first practical implementation of a recently proposed hadron structure oriented (HSO) approach to transverse momentum dependent (TMD) phenomenology applied to Drell-Yan-like processes, including lepton pair production at moderate Q² and Z⁰ boson production. We compare and contrast general features of our methodology with other common practices and emphasize aspects that we view as improvements. Separately, we discuss the importance of treatments that preserve various theoretical properties of the nonperturbative parts of TMD parametrizations for future applications that have the extraction of hadron structure as a primary goal. These include the HSO’s preservation of a basic TMD parton-model-like …

The 1S hyperfine splitting in hydrogen is measured to an impressive ppt precision and will soon be measured to ppm precision in muonic hydrogen. The latter measurement will rely on theoretical predictions, which are limited by knowledge of the proton polarizability effect Δpol. Data-driven evaluations of Δpol have long been in significant tension with baryon chiral perturbation theory. Here we present improved results for Δpol driven by new spin structure data, reducing the long-standing tension between theory and experiment and halving the dominating uncertainty in hyperfine splitting calculations.

At high-energy collider experiments, generative models can be used for a wide range of tasks, including fast detector simulations, unfolding, searches of physics beyond the Standard Model, and inference tasks. In particular, it has been demonstrated that score-based diffusion models can generate high-fidelity and accurate samples of jets or collider events. This work expands on previous generative models in three distinct ways. First, our model is trained to generate entire collider events, including all particle species with complete kinematic information. We quantify how well the model learns event-wide constraints such as the conservation of momentum and discrete quantum numbers. We …

The Gribov-Zwanziger scenario attributes the phenomenon of confinement to the instantaneous interaction term in the QCD Hamiltonian in the Coulomb gauge. For a static quark-antiquark pair, it leads to a potential energy that increases linearly with the distance between them. Lattice studies of the SU(2) Yang-Mills theory determined the corresponding (Coulomb) string tension for sources in the fundamental representation, 𝜎𝐶, to be about 3 times larger than the Wilson loop string tension, 𝜎𝐹. It is far above the Zwanziger variational bound, 𝜎𝐶 ≥𝜎𝐹. We argue that the value often reported in the literature …

Measuring deeply virtual Compton scattering (DVCS) on the neutron is one of the necessary steps to understand the structure of the nucleon in terms of generalized parton distributions (GPDs). Neutron targets play a complementary role to transversely polarized proton targets in the determination of the GPD 𝐸. This poorly known and poorly constrained GPD is essential to obtain the contribution of the quarks’ angular momentum to the spin of the nucleon. DVCS on the neutron was measured for the first time selecting the exclusive final state by detecting the neutron, using the Jefferson Lab longitudinally polarized electron beam, with energies …

Neutrinoless Double-Beta Decay (0$\nu \beta \beta $) is a presumed rare nuclear decay process and is considered the most promising way to prove the Majorana nature of neutrinos, that is, neutrinos are their own antiparticles. The discovery of \zero decay would also enhance our understanding of nuclear physics, astrophysical observations, and physical processes in the early Universe. The Large Enriched Germanium Experiment for Neutrinoless Double-Beta Decay (LEGEND) is a phased $^{\mathrm{76}}$Ge-based 0$\nu \beta \beta $ decay experimental program, aiming for the discovery potential of a half-life of 0$\nu \beta \beta $ beyond 10$^{\mathrm{28}}$ years. The first phase, LEGEND-200, comprises 200 …

The Efimov phenomenon manifests itself as an emergent discrete scaling symmetry in the quantum three-body problem. In the unitarity limit, it leads to an infinite tower of three-body bound states with energies forming a geometric sequence. In this work, we study the evolution of these so-called Efimov states using relativistic scattering theory. We identify them as poles of the three-particle 𝑆 matrix in the complex energy plane, and we study how they transform from virtual states through bound states to resonances when we change the interaction strength. We dial the scattering parameters toward the unitarity limit and observe the emergence …

We study the relation between measured high-𝑥𝐵, high-𝑄2, helium-3 to tritium, (𝑒,𝑒′) inclusive-scattering cross-section ratios and the relative abundance of high-momentum neutron-proton (𝑛𝑝) and proton-proton (𝑝𝑝) short-range correlated nucleon pairs in three-body (𝐴=3) nuclei. Analysis of these data using a simple pair-counting cross-section model suggested a much smaller 𝑛𝑝/𝑝𝑝 ratio than previously measured in heavier nuclei, questioning our understanding of 𝐴 = 3 nuclei and, by extension, all other nuclei. Here, we examine this finding using spectral-function-based cross-section calculations, with both an ab initio 𝐴 = 3 spectral function and effective generalized contact formalism spectral functions …
