Single Top Quark Production At The Fermilab Tevatron: Threshold Resummation And Finite-Order Soft Gluon Corrections, Nikolaos Kidonakis
Faculty Articles
I present a calculation of threshold soft-gluon corrections to single top-quark production in p(p) collisions via all partonic processes in the t and s channels and via associated top quark and W boson production. The soft-gluon corrections are formally resummed to all orders, and finite-order expansions of the resummed cross section are calculated through next-to-next-to-next-to-leading-order (NNNLO) at next-to-leading logarithmic (NLL) accuracy. Numerical results for single top-quark production at the Tevatron are presented, including the dependence of the cross sections on the top-quark mass and on the factorization and renormalization scales. The threshold corrections in the t channel are small while …

Observations are reported for the first time of significant nondipole effects in the photoionization of the outer-valence orbitals of diatomic molecules. Measured nondipole angular-distribution parameters for the 3σg, 1πu, and 2σu shells of N2 exhibit spectral variations with incident photon energies from thresholds to ∼200 eV which are attributed via concomitant calculations to particular final-state symmetry waves arising from (E1)⊗(M1,E2) radiation-matter interactions first-order in photon momentum. Comparisons with previously reported K-edge studies in N2 verify linear scaling with photon momentum, accounting in part for the significantly enhanced nondipole behavior observed in inner-shell ionization …

Recently, a set of nine nonmagic nuclei with anomalous values of the B(E2) ratio B4/2 ≡ B(E2; 4+1 → 2+1)/B(E2; 2+1 → 0+1) were identified. Such values are outside the range allowed by current collective models. In the present work, the B(E2; 4+1 → 2+1) values for two of these nuclei, 98Ru and 180Pt, were re-measured to determine if the current literature values for these nuclei are correct. 98 …

Lifetimes of prolate intruder states in 186Pb and oblate intruder states in 194Po have been determined by employing, for the first time, the recoil-decay tagging technique in recoil distance Doppler-shift lifetime measurements. In addition, lifetime measurements of prolate states in 188Pb up to the 8+state were carried out using the recoil-gating method. The B(E2) values have been deduced from which deformation parameters lβ2l = 0.29(5) and lβ2l = 0.17(3) for the prolate and the oblate bands, respectively, have been extracted. The results also shed new light on the …

Transport Of Galectin-3 Between The Nucleus And Cytoplasm. Ii. Identification Of The Signal For Nuclear Export, Su Yin Li, Peter J. Davidson, Nancy Y. Lin, Ronald J. Patterson
University Faculty Publications and Creative Works
Galectin-3, a factor involved in the splicing of pre-mRNA, shuttles between the nucleus and the cytoplasm. Previous studies have shown that incubation of fibroblasts with leptomycin B resulted in the accumulation of galectin-3 in the nucleus, suggesting that the export of galectin-3 from the nucleus may be mediated by the CRM1 receptor. A candidate nuclear export signal fitting the consensus sequence recognized by CRM1 can be found between residues 240 and 255 of the murine galectin-3 sequence. This sequence was engineered into the pRev(1.4) reporter system, in which candidate sequences can be tested for nuclear export activity in terms of …

We have deduced the cross section for 237U(n, f) over an equivalent neutron energy range from 0 to 20 MeV using the surrogate ratio method. A 55 MeV4He beam from the 88 inch cyclotron at Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory was used to induce fission in the following reactions: 238U(α, αf) and 236U(α, αf). The 238U reaction was a surrogate for 237U(n, f), and the 236U reaction was used as a surrogate for 235U(n, f). Scattered α particles were detected in a fully depleted segmented silicon telescope array …
Running Coupling Constant And Transition From Low To High Energies In Quantum Chromodynamics, Alexander Babansky
Running Coupling Constant And Transition From Low To High Energies In Quantum Chromodynamics, Alexander Babansky
Physics Theses & Dissertations
The remarkable feature of QCD is that the coupling constant (the strength of the interaction) depends on the energy of the interacting particles. At high energies, the coupling constant vanishes and QCD becomes asymptotically free. However, at lower energy, the running coupling constant increases, leading to the confining strong-coupling theory at energies of the order of hadron masses. We study the essential effects of the running coupling constant and analyze the transition from high to low energies in different processes.

Efficient And Accurate Computation Of Elastic Cross Sections In The Single-Level Breit-Wigner Resonance Region, Edward L. Hobbs
Efficient And Accurate Computation Of Elastic Cross Sections In The Single-Level Breit-Wigner Resonance Region, Edward L. Hobbs
Theses and Dissertations
The use of piecewise cubic Hermite polynomials to approximate resonance region cross sections provides a means to accomplish the same task with increased accuracy and fewer points that require exact cross section calculation. Once the derivative of the cross section formula is derived and the interpolating cubic is appropriately shifted and scaled for numerical stability, use of the piecewise cubic Hermite polynomial is easily inserted into computer codes that depend on cross section calculation in the resonance energy region.

Combined Radiation Detection Methods For Assay Of Higher Actinides In Separations Processes: Quarterly Progress Report: January-March 2006, Denis Beller, Warnick Kernan
Safeguards Campaign (TRP)
Monitoring of higher actinides (HA--includes neptunium, plutonium, americium, and curium) during the separation of used nuclear fuel has been identified as a critical research area in the U.S. Advanced Fuel Cycle Initiative (AFCI). Recycling of used fuel by chemically separating it into uranium, fission products, and HA would be the first step in this new fuel cycle. The Material Protection, Accounting, and Control (MPAC) are necessary for materials accounting, criticality monitoring, and assurance of proliferation resistance. The objective of the MPAC project is to develop technology to detect and accurately measure quantities of higher actinides in used fuel assemblies and …

Neutron Multiplicity Measurements For The Afci Program Final Quarterly Progress Report January-March 2006, Denis Beller
Transmutation Sciences Physics (TRP)
This project was developed to test a Russian-built Neutron Multiplicity Detector System (NMDS) for measuring neutrons generated in a central target by a variety of accelerators. To assist in experiment design and evaluation, we use the most advanced high-energy radiation transport code, MCNPX, to model experiments. Experimental results are compared to computational predictions and discrepancies are investigated. Initial plans were to conduct experiments using a 70-MeV proton cyclotron at the Crocker Nuclear Laboratory at the University of California at Davis and/or a 20 to 40 MeV electron linac (linear accelerator) at the Idaho Accelerator Center (IAC) at Idaho State University …
Reactor Physics Studies For The Afci Race Project: Reactor-Accelerator Coupling Experiments Project: Quarterly Progress Report January-March 2006, Denis Beller
Transmutation Sciences Physics (TRP)
In the RACE Project of the U.S. Advanced Fuel Cycle Initiative (AFCI), a series of accelerator driven subcritical systems (ADSS) experiments is being conducted at the Idaho State University’s Idaho Accelerator Center (ISU-IAC) and at the University of Texas (UT) at Austin, and will be conducted at the Texas A&M University. In these experiments electron accelerators are used to induce bremsstrahlung photon-neutron reactions in heavy-metal targets; this source of 1010 to 1013 n/s initiates fission reactions in the subcritical systems. These systems include a compact, transportable assembly at ISU and TRIGA reactors at UT-Austin and Texas A&M. These …

Crystal Structure And Nano Structure Of Oxide-And Nitride Transmutation Fuel – Refinement Of Transmutation Fuel Processing For Surrogate And Radioactive Fuel Systems: Quarterly Report, January 2006 To March 2006, Chinthaka Silva
Fuels Campaign (TRP)
Transmutation-related research work at the National Laboratories, e.g. Los Alamos National Laboratory, is focused on mono-nitride ceramic fuel forms, and consists of closely coordinated “hot” actinide and “cold” inert and surrogate fuels work. Matrix and surrogate materials work involves three major components: (1) fuel matrix synthesis and fabrication, (2) fuel performance, and (3) fuel materials modeling. The synthesis and fabrication component supports basic material studies, as well as actinide fuel fabrication work through fuel fabrication process development.
This project, task 28, supports the TRP program by delivering structural data on surrogate and radioactive fuels. Crystal structure and nanostructures of the …
Characterization Of Detonation Phenomena Observed In High-Speed Visible Imagery, Trevor W. Warren
Characterization Of Detonation Phenomena Observed In High-Speed Visible Imagery, Trevor W. Warren
Theses and Dissertations
Measurements for radius, angular velocity, initial time of observation, and final time of observation were made for turbulent vortices around detonation fireballs. A proxy for vortex power, determined through unit analysis, was found to correlate well to initial (and final) time of observation with R2 equal to 0.8572. The linear trend on a log10-log10 plot was indicative of a rapid decrease (over 10-1 s) in power associated with the decay of the fireball. Predictions, based on turbulent spectral theory were made for root-mean-square velocity fluctuations and Reynolds numbers, both as functions of time. In addition, …

Synthesis And Properties Of Metallic Technetium And Technetium - Zirconium Alloys As A Radioactive Storage Waste Form To Stabilize The Technetium Waste Stream Of The Urex+1 Process, Frederic Poineau, Thomas Hartmann, Kenneth Czerwinski
Waste Forms Campaign (TRP)
In the AFCI program the UREX+1 process is proposed as one of the most promising technique to separate TRU (transuranic elements) form LWR spent nuclear fuel in the years to come. The application of UREX+1 results in good separation of the 5f-transuranics from the 4f-lanthanides, reduced waste volumes by eliminating the uranium content, and reduced waste package costs. Technetium-99 will be separated together with uranium and iodine within the first process steps. After the separation of uranium, technetium and iodine must be immobilized by their incorporation in a suitable waste storage form. Based on recent activities within the AFCI community, …

Coulomb activation of the four quasiparticle Kπ = 16+ 178Hf isomer (t 1/2 = 31 y) has led to the measurement of a set of Eλ matrix elements coupling the isomer band to the ground band. The present data combined with earlier 178Hf Coulomb excitation data have probed the K components in the wave functions and revealed the onset and saturation of K mixing in low-K bands, whereas the mixing is negligible in the high-K bands. The implications can be applied to other quadrupole-deformed nuclei.
Next-To-Next-To-Next-To-Leading-Order Soft-Gluon Corrections In Hard-Scattering Processes Near Threshold, Nikolaos Kidonakis
Next-To-Next-To-Next-To-Leading-Order Soft-Gluon Corrections In Hard-Scattering Processes Near Threshold, Nikolaos Kidonakis
Faculty Articles
I present a unified calculation of soft-gluon corrections to hard-scattering cross sections through next-to-next-to-next-to-leading order (NNNLO). Master formulas are derived, from a threshold resummation formalism, that can be applied to total and differential cross sections for hard-scattering processes in hadron colliders. I also present numerical results for charged Higgs production at the LHC where these corrections are large, and for top quark production at the Tevatron where these corrections greatly reduce the scale dependence of the cross section.

The longitudinal target-spin asymmetry AUL for the exclusive electroproduction of high-energy photons was measured for the first time in e→p→e′pγ. The data have been accumulated at JLab with the CLAS spectrometer using 5.7 GeV electrons and a longitudinally polarized NH3 target. A significant azimuthal angular dependence was observed, resulting from the interference of the deeply virtual Compton scattering and Bethe-Heitler processes. The amplitude of the sinϕ moment is 0.252±0.042stat±0.020sys. Theoretical calculations are in good agreement with the magnitude and the kinematic dependence of the target-spin asymmetry, which is sensitive to the generalized parton distributions …

Differential cross sections for the reaction γp→η′p have been measured with the CLAS spectrometer and a tagged photon beam with energies from 1.527 to 2.227 GeV. The results reported here possess much greater accuracy than previous measurements. Analyses of these data suggest for the first time the coupling of the η′N channel to both the S11(1535) and P11(1710) resonances, known to couple strongly to the ηN channel in photoproduction on the proton, and the importance of J=3/2 resonances in the process.
