Utilizing Parity Violating Electron Scattering As A Probe To Measure The Neutron Radius Of 208-Pb, David Eric King Dec 2021

Utilizing Parity Violating Electron Scattering As A Probe To Measure The Neutron Radius Of 208-Pb, David Eric King

Dissertations - ALL

The Lead Radius Experiment 2 (PREX-II) and Calcium Radius Experiment (CREX) carried out in Hall A of the Thomas Jefferson National Accelerator Facility were designed to measure the neutron skins of 208-Pb and 48-Ca nuclei by measuring the parity-violating asymmetry APV of the elastic scattering of polarized electrons on 208-Pb and 48-Ca targets. In order to achieve a precision measurement of the neutron skins of 208-Pb and 48-Ca it is imperative to maintain precise control over many experimental parameters–one of which is a precision measurement of the electron beam polarization (which is the largest contributor to experimental error making control …

Design And Construction Of A Modular Nai(Tl) Detector Array For Use In The Parity- And Time Reversal Violation Measurements For Noptrex, Jon Mills, Jason Fry

Posters-at-the-Capitol

The goal of the NOPTREX collaboration is to probe the Standard Model by utilizing the properties of low energy neutron-nucleus resonances to find evidence of parity- and time-reversal-odd violations. In order to conduct these sensitive experiments, it is needed to design and simulate an array of modular, high precision NaI(Tl) detectors. These detectors will be designed to operate in both pulse and current modes. We have tentative beam time at LANSCE to perform a search for new parity violation in heavy nuclei as candidates for time reversal and to perform a research and development effort on the n+d=t+gamma experiment. We …

Nuclear security culture is the human factor within the nuclear field which is considered a principal means to support and enhance nuclear security system. This paper presents a study of nuclear security system already established within a radiological facility considering concepts such as: deter, detect, delay, and response layers. This study …

Nuclear Transparency From Quasi-Elastic $^{12}C(E,E'P)$ Scattering Reaction Up To $Q^2=14.2 ~(Gev/C)^{2}$ In Hall C At Jefferson Lab, Deepak Kumar Bhetuwal Dec 2021

Nuclear Transparency From Quasi-Elastic $^{12}C(E,E'P)$ Scattering Reaction Up To $Q^2=14.2 ~(Gev/C)^{2}$ In Hall C At Jefferson Lab, Deepak Kumar Bhetuwal

Theses and Dissertations

Color Transparency $(CT)$ is a unique prediction of Quantum Chromodynamics $(QCD)$ where the final (and/or initial) state interactions of hadrons with the nuclear medium are suppressed for exclusive processes at high momentum transfers. While this phenomenon has been observed for mesons, there has never been a conclusive observation for baryons. A clear signal of $CT$ for baryons would be the first evidence of baryons fluctuating to a small size in the nucleus, and the onset would show the transition from nucleon-meson picture to quark-gluon degrees of freedom. The experiment $E1206107$, searching for the onset of $CT$ in protons was completed …

This paper describes the ATHENA platform, an energy tuning assembly, which was developed to spectrally shape the National Ignition Facility (NIF) deuterium–tritium fusion neutron source to a thermonuclear (fusion) plus prompt fission neutron spectrum with a capability to act as a short-pulse neutron source. This unique, otherwise inaccessible radiation environment complements existing experimental facilities and capabilities. The flexible ATHENA irradiation positions were modeled using an ensemble of Monte Carlo simulations with stochastic sampling of the nuclear cross-sections to characterize the radiation environments and uncertainty for the platform. Validation of the internal neutron spectrum produced from fielding ATHENA at NIF occurred …

Theory Of Change, Center For Complexity

Horizon 2045

Horizon 2045 (H2045) is a 25-year initiative to end the nuclear weapons century.

We urgently need to manage the intertwined existential risks of the Anthropocene—the geological era that began with the 1945 Trinity Test and is characterized by humankind’s newfound capacity to destroy itself along with all life on the planet.

Recent research has shown that concerns about existential threats have become palpable, as has the desire to solve human-made problems and move to a brighter future. This offers an important opportunity: By considering nuclear weapons in the context of other dangers, we can dismantle conventional wisdom that nuclear weapons …

Faculty Publications

Current Countering Weapons of Mass Destruction (CWMD) demands can be divided broadly into policy and science. The science of chemical, biological, and radiological/nuclear weapons informs the limits of development, production, employment, operation, detection, risk characterization, human and material protection, and medical intervention. In short, the science of weapons of mass destruction (WMD) should precede and inform the development of policy. It is to this end that the Air Force Institute of Technology (AFIT) CWMD program was re-established, providing a technical educational option for practitioners to understand the science behind a very technically challenging subject.

Efficient Neuromorphic Algorithms For Gamma-Ray Spectrum Denoising And Radionuclide Identification, Merlin Phillip Carson Sep 2021

Efficient Neuromorphic Algorithms For Gamma-Ray Spectrum Denoising And Radionuclide Identification, Merlin Phillip Carson

Dissertations and Theses

Radionuclide detection and identification are important tasks for deterring a potentially catastrophic nuclear event. Due to high levels of background radiation from both terrestrial and extraterrestrial sources, some form of noise reduction pre-processing is required for a gamma-ray spectrum prior to being analyzed by an identification algorithm so as to determine the identity of anomalous sources. This research focuses on the use of neuromorphic algorithms for the purpose of developing low power, accurate radionuclide identification devices that can filter out non-anomalous background radiation and other artifacts created by gamma-ray detector measurement equipment, along with identifying clandestine, radioactive material.

Electromagnetic Transitions And Beta Decays In Nuclei From The Ab Initio Symmetry-Adapted No-Core Shell Model, Grigor Sargsyan Aug 2021

Electromagnetic Transitions And Beta Decays In Nuclei From The Ab Initio Symmetry-Adapted No-Core Shell Model, Grigor Sargsyan

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

Nuclear physics today is a diverse field, involving research that extends from the minus- cule scales of neutrons and protons to the colossal dimensions of astrophysical objects in the universe. And since the ab initio methods in nuclear physics use realistic internucleon interactions, nuclear modeling has gained predictive capabilities that enable us to probe ever more deeply into the fundamental nature of matter. One of these models – the symmetry- adapted no-core shell model (SA-NCSM) – is capable of reaching the medium-mass region of the chart of the nuclides, by exploiting the emergent symmetries of nuclei, and is therefore well-suited …

Proximal Policy Optimization For Radiation Source Search, Philippe Erol Proctor Aug 2021

Proximal Policy Optimization For Radiation Source Search, Philippe Erol Proctor

Dissertations and Theses

Rapid localization and search for lost nuclear sources in a given area of interest is an important task for the safety of society and the reduction of human harm. Detection, localization and identification are based upon the measured gamma radiation spectrum from a radiation detector. The nonlinear relationship of electromagnetic wave propagation paired with the probabilistic nature of gamma ray emission and background radiation from the environment leads to ambiguity in the estimation of a source's location. In the case of a single mobile detector, there are numerous challenges to overcome such as weak source activity, multiple sources, or the …

Nonlinear Schrödinger Equation Solitons On Quantum Droplets, A. Ludu, A.S. Carstea Jul 2021

Nonlinear Schrödinger Equation Solitons On Quantum Droplets, A. Ludu, A.S. Carstea

Publications

Irrotational flow of a spherical thin liquid layer surrounding a rigid core is described using the defocusing nonlinear Schrödinger equation. Accordingly, azimuthal moving nonlinear waves are modeled by periodic dark solitons expressed by elliptic functions. In the quantum regime the algebraic Bethe ansatz is used in order to capture the energy levels of such motions, which we expect to be relevant for the dynamics of the nuclear clusters in deformed heavy nuclei surface modeled by quantum liquid drops. In order to validate the model we match our theoretical energy spectra with experimental results on energy, angular momentum, and parity for …

Structural Shielding Considerations For Vmat, Ana Lucia Dieguez Jul 2021

Structural Shielding Considerations For Vmat, Ana Lucia Dieguez

LSU Master's Theses

Introduction: As noted in National Council on Radiation Protection and Measurements (NCRP) Report 151, the medical physicist or other qualified expert has the responsibility to keep abreast of any new technology or treatment method that could potentially impact structural shielding design. Volumetric arc therapy (VMAT) became prevalent after the publication of Report 151 and thus was not explicitly addressed in Report 151. If the shielding-related characteristics of VMAT differ enough from the expectations of Report 151, especially in the circumstance of a vault utilized exclusively for VMAT, a shielding design based on Report 151 could potentially be inadequate. The …

J/Ψ Photoproduction Near Threshold With Clas12, Joseph Newton Jul 2021

J/Ψ Photoproduction Near Threshold With Clas12, Joseph Newton

Physics Theses & Dissertations

The structure of the proton is comprised of quarks and a sea of gluons. A mechanism that can extract the characteristics of the hidden-color correlations of the nuclear wavefunction is the production of charm near threshold. Due to the fact that momentum transfer is large near threshold in the production of J/ψ , all three valence quarks must act coherently to ex- change energy for the reaction to occur. Models have been developed to predict the nature of J/ψ photoproduction at these specific energies. These include production mechanisms with the two-gluon and three-gluon exchanges. The transferred momentum dependence of the …

A radiation imaging system images a distributed source of radiation from an unknown direction by rotating a scatter mask around a central axis. The scatter mask has a pixelated outer surface of tangentially oriented, flat geometric surfaces that are spherically varying in radial dimension that corresponds to a discrete amount of attenuation. Rotation position of the scatter mask is tracked as a function of time. Radiation counts from gamma and/or neutron radiation are received from at least one radiation detector that is positioned at or near the central axis. A rotation-angle dependent detector response curve (DRC) is generated based on …

Neutron Pulse-Time Extension Through Conversion To Positronium, Shawn T. Mctaggart Jun 2021

Neutron Pulse-Time Extension Through Conversion To Positronium, Shawn T. Mctaggart

Theses and Dissertations

Laser-Plasma interactions have strong potential as future neutron sources. Measuring the neutron rate is difficult due to several issues: the very short duration of the laser pulse and subsequent fusion events (on the order of a few picoseconds), the corresponding short duration of the neutron pulse, and the simultaneous emission of other ionizing particles such as protons and electrons. A system was designed to measure neutron emission by imposing a delay from the emission of other radiation by conversion of the neutrons into ortho-positronium (o-Ps), the triplet state of positronium. This lifetime extension enables more sensitive and selective detection of …

Detecting The Phi Meson With Clas12, Paul Simmerling

Honors Scholar Theses

Analysis and detection of the phi(1020) vector meson from exclusive electroproduction decay into Kaons have been performed. Studying exclusive phi electroproduction is an ideal channel for quantifying the gluonic properties of the nucleon. This detection used the CEBAF Large Acceptance Spectrometer (CLAS12) at Thomas Jefferson National Accelerator Facility (JLab) with a 10.6 GeV longitudinally polarized electron beam and an unpolarized hydrogen target. Using the detected final state particles phase space, x_B, Q^2, W, and by developing specialized exclusivity cuts as well as several additional cuts, events containing the production of a phi(1020) meson were able to be extracted. Additionally, a …

A Process For Adm-300 Radiation Detector Modernization For Military Applications, Caesar R. Pereira

UNLV Theses, Dissertations, Professional Papers, and Capstones

An investigation to re-evaluate the current use in military applications of the ADM-300 Multi-Functional Survey Instrument and its requirements are provided. This paper outlines a method to upgrade the ADM-300 due to its eventual obsolescence using newly developed requirements that meet the original justification for use in the USAF in 1992. The capabilities and features of various detectors are analyzed and compared to the ADM-300. Response curves are generated using Monte Carlo simulations. The detectors are prioritized based on their performance to create metrics. A metanalysis of the metrics is conducted to limit bias within the process and justify their …

Single-Neutron States In 51ti Via Neutron Transfer Reaction To 50ti, Jessica Nebel-Crosson Apr 2021

Single-Neutron States In 51ti Via Neutron Transfer Reaction To 50ti, Jessica Nebel-Crosson

Physics and Astronomy Honors Papers

My project clarifies previous measurements made for the high excitation states of titanium isotopes, specifically 51Ti. We used a single-neutron transfer reaction from a deuterium source and measured the energy difference between the initial energy of the deuterium source, the transferred neutron, and the free proton. Our analysis included creating angular distribution plots of the proton momentum and the loose assignments of the single-particle state nature for each excitation state. We took these measurements via the Super-Enge Split-Pole Spectrograph at Florida State University.

Exploring Qcd Factorization At Moderate Energy Scales, Eric Alan Moffat Apr 2021

Exploring Qcd Factorization At Moderate Energy Scales, Eric Alan Moffat

Physics Theses & Dissertations

Asymptotic freedom in QCD facilitates the use of partonic degrees of freedom over short distances, but physical processes are sensitive to a wide range of scales. Thus, it is necessary in QCD calculations to utilize a factorization scheme to separate a process into perturbative and non-perturbative factors. This separation relies on an assumption that one energy scale is infinitely larger than the other scales involved in the process. However, much experimental research in areas such as nucleon structure and quark-hadron duality occur at more moderate energy scales where that basic assumption may not be true but perturbative calculations should still …

Investigation Of The Use Of Coincidences Between Fast Neutrons And Gamma Rays For The Detection Of Special Nuclear Materials, Débora M. Trombetta, Bo Cederwall, Kåre Axell

International Journal of Nuclear Security

The emergence of new methodologies with promising applications that could impact nuclear security and emergency preparedness detection systems in the near future motivate the development of computational tools that allow the theoretical investigation of the relevant design parameters for such detection systems. Here, we present Monte Carlo simulations using the MCNP6 code to investigate the use of fast neutron-neutron and gamma-neutron coincidences in addition to conventional methods for detection of special nuclear materials (SNM) using inorganic scintillator detectors. The results show fair agreement between MCNP6 and MCNP-PoliMi simulations for neutron-neutron coincidences and that coincident detection of gamma rays and fast …

Extracting The Number Of Short Range Correlated Nucleon Pairs From Inclusive Electron Scattering Data, R. Weiss, A. W. Denniston, J. R. Pybus, O. Hen, E. Piasetzky, A. Schmidt, L. B. Weinstein, N. Barnea

Physics Faculty Publications

The extraction of the relative abundances of short-range correlated (SRC) nucleon pairs from inclusive electron scattering is studied using the generalized contact formalism (GCF) with several nuclear interaction models. GCF calculations can reproduce the observed scaling of the cross-section ratios for nuclei relative to deuterium at high xB and large Q2, a2 = (σA/A)/(σd/2). In the nonrelativistic instant-form formulation, the calculation is very sensitive to the model parameters and only reproduces the data using parameters that are inconsistent with ab initio many-body calculations. Using a light-cone GCF formulation significantly decreases this sensitivity …

Determination Of The Rydberg Constant From The Emission Spectra Of H And He+, Kyle D. Shaffer Feb 2021

Determination Of The Rydberg Constant From The Emission Spectra Of H And He+, Kyle D. Shaffer

Ramifications

Abstract

In this experiment, the Rydberg constants for the hydrogen atom and He+ were determined by analysis of the emission spectra of Hand He, respectively, in comparison to the principal quantum numbers of each transition. Using both a hydrogen and then a helium atomic lamp attached to a 0.5 m grating spectrometer and a photomultiplier detector (PMT), a change in voltage detected by the PMT can be paired with a corresponding wavelength passing through the spectrometer from each emission peak in the visible to ultraviolet range. The peaks acquired from this change in voltage were analyzed to find their …

Wavefront-Selective Fano Resonant Metasurface, Adam C. Overvig, Andrea Alù Jan 2021

Wavefront-Selective Fano Resonant Metasurface, Adam C. Overvig, Andrea Alù

Publications and Research

Fano resonances are conventionally understood as sharp spectral features with selectivity in the momentum-frequency domain, implying that they can be excited only by plane waves with specific frequencies and incident angles. We demonstrate that Fano resonances can be made generally selective in the space-frequency domain. They can be tailored to resonate only when excited by a frequency, polarization, and wavefront of choice. This generalization reveals that Fano systems are characterized by eigenwaves that scatter to their time-reversed image upon reflection. Although in conventional Fano systems this trivially occurs for normally incident plane waves, we show that, in general, the selected …
