Advanced Portfolio Theory: Why Understanding The Math Matters, Tom Arnold
Advanced Portfolio Theory: Why Understanding The Math Matters, Tom Arnold
Finance Faculty Publications
The goal of this paper is to motivate the use of efficient set mathematics for portfolio analysis [as seen in Roll, 1977] in the classroom. Many treatments stop at the two asset portfolio case (avoiding the use of matrix algebra) and an alarming number of treatments rely on illustration and templates to provide a heuristic sense of the material without really teaching how efficient portfolios are generated. This is problematic considering that the benefits of understanding efficient set mathematics go beyond portfolio analysis and into such topics as regression analysis (as demonstrated here).

In 1960s Abraham Robinson has developed the non-standard analysis, a formalization of analysis and a branch of mathematical logic, that rigorously defines the infinitesimals. Informally, an infinitesimal is an infinitely small number. Formally, x is said to be infinitesimal if and only if for all positive integers n one has xxx < 1/n. Let &>0 be a such infinitesimal number. The hyper-real number set is an extension of the real number set, which includes classes of infinite numbers and classes of infinitesimal numbers. Let’s consider the non-standard finite numbers 1+ = 1+&, where “1” is its standard part and “&” its non-standard part, …

Florentin Smarandache, an American mathematician of Romanian descent has generated a vast variety of mathematical problems. Some problems are easy, others medium, but many are interesting or unsolved and this is the reason why the present book appears. Here, of course, there are problems from various types. Solving these problems is addictive like eating pumpkin seed: having once started, one cannot help doing it over and over again.

Design And Implementation Of Fuzzy Logic Controllers, Osama A. Abihana
Electrical & Computer Engineering Theses & Dissertations
The main objectives of our research are to present a self-contained overview of fuzzy sets and fuzzy logic, develop a methodology for control system design using fuzzy logic controllers, and to design and implement a fuzzy logic controller for a real system. In this thesis we first present the fundamental concepts of fuzzy sets and fuzzy logic. Fuzzy sets and basic fuzzy operations are defined. In addition, for control systems, it is important to understand the concepts of linguistic variables, linguistic values, term sets, fuzzy rule base, inference methods, and defuzzification methods. Second, we introduce a four-step fuzzy logic control …

The Sharpness Of Some Cluster Set Results, D. Rung, Samih Obaid

We show that a recent cluster set theorem of Rung is sharp in a certain sense. This is accomplished through the construction of an interpolating sequence whose limit set is closed, totally disconnected and porous. The results also generalize some of Dolzenko's cluster set theorems.

On The First Passage Time Distribution For A Class Of Markov Chains, Mark Brown, Narasinga Rao Chaganty
Mathematics & Statistics Faculty Publications
Consider a stochastically monotone chain with monotone paths on a partially ordered countable set S. Let C be an increasing subset of S with finite complement. Then the first passage-time from i ∈ S to C is shown to be IFRA (increasing failure rate on the,av;rage). Several applications are presented including coherent systems, shock models, and convolutions of IFRA distributions.
