Historically, the Western Australian production of Australian herring (Arrtpts georgtanus) has fluctuated from year to year in response to changing market demand. Prior to 1968, the annual catch taken by professional fishermen was relatively stable, ranging from 200 000 kg (approx. 500 000 pounds) to 450 000 kg (approx. 1 000 000 pounds). From 1968, commercial production has risen to a peak of 1 187 440 kg (2 617 857 pounds) recorded in 1972/73 (Table I). Recent studies indicated the need for development of surface water supplies in Kentucky. Rising resource costs make economically efficient reservoir designs increasingly important. This study was undertaken to provide methods in water supply reservoir design that increase system benefits.

Two major factors influencing reservoir design were studied: estimated future streamflow into the reservoir and demands placed on the reservoir. Standard reservoir sizing methods rely on historical streamflow data. This data is frequently limited and uncertainty in required storage estimates may result. To assess the reliability of a design, the use of mathematical models in simulation studies was proposed. Existing stochastic …

This study proposed that demand management through pricing policies can be used in conjunction with supply management to solve water supply problems in Kentucky. Economic principles were shown to apply to rural residential water use. From the economic model, a hyperbolic demand function was theorized. The mathematical form of this function used quantity of water as a function of price, income, value of residence, evaporation, and persons per residence. This function was estimated using ordinary least squares regression. A log-linear model was found to be a satisfactory representation of the demand function. Lake Herman, a recreational, shallow, warm water prairie lake near Madison, South Dakota drain in extensively cultivated watershed and acts as a siltation basin for a chain of four lakes. The lake is more than half silted in and since 1968 various rehabilitation efforts have been made, including the construction of silt traps and lake dredging.

This study evaluates the socioeconomic impacts of the Second Stage of the Southern Nevada Water Project of the United States Bureau of Reclamation, comparing that project with the alternatives of importing water from Nevada areas somewhat removed from the Las Vegas Valley and of leaving the water supply of the Valley basically as it is, the no project alternative.

The study follows, with adaptations and extensions, the general methodology for socioeconomic impact studies as developed and still being evolved in successive socioeconomic analyses of Bureau of Reclamation water projects. This study discusses navigability concepts, consumptive rights to surface and ground waters, the disposal of diffused surface waters and the administration of Kentucky's statutory water allocation system.

Federal regulatory powers are based on navigability as is state ownership of submerged lands. Kentucky uses the ebb-and-flow test of navigability to determine title to submerged lands but uses a navigability-in-fact test to determine the scope of state regulatory authority. Consumptive uses of water in Kentucky are governed by the riparian landowner to use as much water as he needs as long as his use does not interfere with the legitimate uses of …

During the summer of 1974, I sampled sites of vegetation representative of successional trends in plant communities along the Missouri River floodplain from Sioux City, Iowa, to Rulo, Nebraska. Five district community types listed from youngest to oldest are as follows: Salix spp. – dominated, Populus deltoides – dominated, Platanus occidentalis-Ulmus rubra – dominated, Tilia americana-Quercus rubra – dominated, and Quercus macrocarpa-Carya ovata – dominated vegetation.

The ¹⁴C light and dark bottle technique for measurement of primary production was utilized as a means of assessing the amount of inorganic carbon being converted Into organic form by the photosynthesis of phytoplankton populations In the Boulder Basin of Lake Mead.

Spatial and time series changes of productivity levels observed at eight sampling locations within Boulder Basin Indicate that the Influence of treated municipal arts' industrial effluent flowing into Les Vegas Bay is contributing high levels of available nutrients at Las Vegas Wash Inlet to cause productivity to approximate those levels associated with polluted waters.

Fisheries and merchant vessels rarely are at odds over matters of ocean traffic. However, both those activities may object to obstructions related to offshore oil drilling. Dr. Lewis Alexander of the University of Rhode Island authored a most informative and incisive paper concerning the relationship of regionalism and the Law of the Sea. In this paper Alexander focused on the special case of the semi-enclosed sea and suggested that the potential for joint action of nations surrounding these seas is worthy of special interest and study. Even a cursory review of a geographic atlas reveals that the 25 seas under consideration constitute rather definitive, logical, potential regions. Data was collected during the 1971-72 snowfall season for the Lake Huron basin. The bulk aerodynamic approach, as formulated by Priestly, was utilized to estimate the daily average flux of heat and moisture over the lake. It was hypothesized that discriminant analysis could be employed to determine the threshold value (discriminant index) of the energy flux which is necessary for the occurrence of the lake-effect snowfall system. To determine the validity of this threshold value, the discriminant index was applied to a series of historical data. The fishery for the western rock lobster* is one of the most important single fisheries in Australia and an important export earner for the State. The fishery is governed by a complex set of regulations which have been reviewed by Bowen (1971) and which are designed to limit the total effort to acceptable levels and to enforce a legal minimum size. During 1972 and 1973 plants and vertebrate animals were collected and recorded from a proposed 22 000 ha nature reserve centred on a chain of salt lakes in south-western Western Australia (33° 10' S - 33° 35' 8 and 118° 19' B - 118° 29' E).

The dominant plant species were collected, the structural formations desert bed and a vegetation map produced. Seven species of native terrestrial mammal and three species of bat were recorded.
