The geology of the eastern limb of the Green Mountain Anticlinorium consists of a series of Paleozoic metasedimentary rocks with lithologic boundaries arranged in a remarkably straight trend approximately parallel to the axis of the Green Mountains. Published reports of the area, consisting largely of reconnaissance mapping, have treated this complex series of polyphase deformed rocks as an essentially upright autocthonous sedimentary sequence. Boundaries between rock units have, for the most part, been assumed to be primary in origin, as have various structural elements within the rock units. The Structural And Metamorphic History Of The Oakhurst Roof Pendant, Mariposa And Madera Counties, California, Lee R. Russell

The Oakhurst roof pendant, near Oakhurst, California, consists of three pre-Cretaceous clastic metasedimentary rock units, surrounded and intruded by rocks of the Sierra Nevada batholith. Two zones of probable "sheared granitic" and "ultramafic" rocks trend northwesterly and are approximately aligned with the Foothills fault system farther north.

The dominant mesocopic feature of the pendant is a northwesterly striking foliation which forms a downward converging fan. Earlier-formed hornblende lineations have been transposed into this foliation plane, as shown by Schmidt-net projections.

Rocks comprising the three unites show three textural stages:

1) Early amphiboles and diopside overgrown by later static amphibole pophyroblasts. …

The major purpose of the study was to map, describe, and correlate the pre-Tertiary rocks. Accessible and excellent exposures at Pittsburg Landing enabled the writer to make a somewhat detailed study of the stratigraphy. The thesis area also offered an opportunity to study in a reconnaissance manner, the Tertiary Columbia River Basalt as described by Waters, and more recently y Ozier.

Geophysical And Geological Analysis Of A Fault-Like Linearity In The Lower Clackamas River Area, Clackamas County, Oregon, Ronald Jay Schmela

Dissertations and Theses

A fault-like linearity along the lower Clackamas River is evaluated by analysis of physiographic and structural alignments, geological relationships, and by gravity and magnetic data. The study has resulted in the verification of a structural feature extending along the Clackamas River and the eastern front of the Portland Hills.

Physiographic alignments were examined in twelve 15 minute and two 7-1/2 minute quadrangle maps. A significant northeasterly morphologic trend, N. 20⁰ W. and N. 40° W., and other secondary trends, namely, the N-S, E-W, and N. 50-60° E., has developed in the Portland area. The Goajira Peninsula forms the northernmost extension of continental South America (see Fig. 1). Its lobate outer portion, the area of this geologic study, is a mountainous region about 75 kilometers wide at its widest part and juts 150 kilometers northeastward into the Caribbean Sea. Although only about 110 kilometers north of the city of Maracaibo, Venezuela, the Peninsula is isolated and little known. Only a narrow coastal strip lies in Venezuela; the remainder is in Colombia; but the Peninsula is largely a desert wasteland not extensively entered by people other than its own sparse Indian population. The northern part of the Fra Cristobal Range contains rocks of Precambrian, Cambrian, Pennsylvanian, Permian, Cretaceous, Tertiary and Quaternary age. One of the northernmost exposures in New Mexico of the Cambrian Bliss formation occurs in the central part of the range. Here the bliss formation wedges out due to widespread pre-Pennsylvanian erosion which removed all the other lower Paleozoic rocks.

The Pennsylvanian Magdalena group, which is predominately limestone, rests uncomformably on Precambrian rock and the Bliss Formation. It forms the greatest part of the sedimentary sequence and is divided into three formations; the Red House, Nakaye, and Bar B formations …

The northern part of the Ortiz Mountains of north-central New Mexico consists of a tilted fault block of Cretaceous Mancos shale and Mesaverde formation intruded by latite-andesite porphyry sills and laccoliths and a nepheline-bearing augite manzonite stock. Igneous activity started with the development of a volcanic vent in what is now the central part of the mountains.
