Earthquake And Tsunami Forecasts: Relation Of Slow Slip Events To Subsequent Earthquake Rupture, Timothy H. Dixon, Yan Jiang, Rocco Malservisi, Robert Mccaffrey, Nicholas Voss, Marino Protti, Victor Gonzalez

Geology Faculty Publications and Presentations

The 5 September 2012 Mw 7.6 earthquake on the Costa Rica subduction plate boundary followed a 62-y interseismic period. High-precision GPS recorded numerous slow slip events (SSEs) in the decade leading up to the earthquake, both up-dip and down-dip of seismic rupture. Deeper SSEs were larger than shallower ones and, if characteristic of the interseismic period, release most locking down-dip of the earthquake, limiting down-dip rupture and earthquake magnitude. Shallower SSEs were smaller, accounting for some but not all interseismic locking. One SSE occurred several months before the earthquake, but changes in Mohr–Coulomb failure stress were probably too small to …

Constraints On Interplate Locking Within The Makran Subduction Zone Using Gps, Elyse Erin Frohling Jan 2014

Constraints On Interplate Locking Within The Makran Subduction Zone Using Gps, Elyse Erin Frohling

All Master's Theses

We use GPS measurements from 20 stations located in Iran, Pakistan, and Oman along with International Seismological Centre hypocentral locations to create a fault coupling model for the Makran subduction zone. The 3-D geometry of the megathrust fault is estimated from five profiles landward of the Makran trench. Continuous GPS on the Arabian plate show convergence of ~27 mm/year, and interseismic deformation is calculated using the back-slip method of Savage [ 1983]. We find the entire subduction zone appears to be accumulating stress uniformly from ~15-60 km depth and find no evidence of along-strike segmentation in strain accumulation, suggesting the …

Paleoseismic Study Of The Stewart Valley And Northern Pahrump Segments Of The Stateline Fault System, Nevada, Jonathan Carter Aug 2012

Paleoseismic Study Of The Stewart Valley And Northern Pahrump Segments Of The Stateline Fault System, Nevada, Jonathan Carter

UNLV Theses, Dissertations, Professional Papers, and Capstones

The Stateline fault system (SFS) is a ~200 km long zone of dextral faults running NW along the NV/CA border from Primm, Nevada to Amargosa Valley in the western Central Basin and Range province (CBR). Because of size and proximity, the SFS poses a hazard to the 2.5 million people, most of who live within 10 km, in Pahrump, Nevada and within 40 km, in Las Vegas, Nevada. The goals of this thesis are to (1) understand if the SFS is accommodating faulting slip change in the CBR; (2) test the along strike continuity of the SFS in Pahrump and …

Final Report: Task 22 — Extreme Ground Motion Studies, John G. Anderson, James N. Brune, Jaak J.K. Daemen, Matthew Purvance Dec 2008

Final Report: Task 22 — Extreme Ground Motion Studies, John G. Anderson, James N. Brune, Jaak J.K. Daemen, Matthew Purvance

Publications (YM)

TASK 22 consisted of two separate investigations into extreme ground motions due to seismic events, Subtask 1 and Subtask 2. Subtask 1 included field studies of geological formations that should put an upper bound on extreme ground motions that have happened at the site of the formations. The locations are critically selected to provide the most effective constraints possible on the validity of the probabilistic seismic hazard analysis for Yucca Mountain. Subtask 2 surveyed recorded ground motions from around the world, with the aim to draw general conclusions from these as to the conditions where extreme ground motions are observed. …

Exceptional Ground Accelerations And Velocities Caused By Earthquakes, John G. Anderson, James N. Brune Jan 2008

Exceptional Ground Accelerations And Velocities Caused By Earthquakes, John G. Anderson, James N. Brune

Publications (YM)

This project aims to understand the characteristics of the free-field strong-motion records that have yielded the 100 largest peak accelerations and the 100 largest peak velocities recorded to date. The peak is defined as the maximum magnitude of the acceleration or velocity vector during the strong shaking. This compilation includes 35 records with peak acceleration greater than gravity, and 41 records with peak velocities greater than 100 cm/s. The results represent an estimated 150,000 instrument-years of strong-motion recordings. The mean horizontal acceleration or velocity, as used for the NGA ground motion models, is typically 0.76 times the magnitude of this …

Paleoseismology Of The Black Hills Fault, Southern Nevada, And Implications For Regional Tectonics, Eric Fossett Dec 2005

Paleoseismology Of The Black Hills Fault, Southern Nevada, And Implications For Regional Tectonics, Eric Fossett

UNLV Theses, Dissertations, Professional Papers, and Capstones

The Black Hills fault (BHF) is a Holocene fault located in Eldorado Valley, approximately 7 km from Boulder City, southern Nevada. The importance of this study is to determine the seismic hazards the BHF poses to Boulder City and the greater Las Vegas metropolitan area and to determine the mechanisms driving the young deformation in the Lake Mead region. The BHF is a multistranded fault that had five surface rupturing paleoearthquake events in the past approximately 25 ka. Paleoseismic fault offsets indicate that the BHF is capable of generating a Mw = 6.4-6.9 earthquake. Slip rates calculated for the BHF …

Seismicity In The Vicinity Of Yucca Mountain, Nevada, For The Period October 1, 1997 To September 20, 1999, David H. Von Seggern, Ken Smith, Glenn Biasi May 2001

Seismicity In The Vicinity Of Yucca Mountain, Nevada, For The Period October 1, 1997 To September 20, 1999, David H. Von Seggern, Ken Smith, Glenn Biasi

Publications (YM)

Starting on October 1, 1995 the monitoring of seismicity within the southern Great Basin near Yucca Mountain was performed with a new digital network. This network features three-component recording with 24-bit A/D conversion in the field. Continuous data is collected at 20 sps, and event triggered windows are collected at 100 samples per second. A seismic bulletin of events is made by associating triggers occurring within a prescribed time window. classifying the local earthquake events, and locating the earthquakes and computing their magnitudes with conventional methods. This report covers the operational and seismic results of the third and fourth full …
