Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

Android applications are getting bigger with an increasing number of features. However, not all the features are needed by a specific user. The unnecessary features can increase the attack surface and cost additional resources (e.g., storage and memory). Therefore, it is important to remove unnecessary features from Android applications. However, it is difficult for the end users to fully explore the apps to identify the unnecessary features, and there is no off-the-shelf tool available to assist users to debloat the apps by themselves. In this work, we propose AutoDebloater to debloat Android applications automatically for end users. AutoDebloater is a …

Experimental Comparison Of Features, Analyses, And Classifiers For Android Malware Detection, Lwin Khin Shar, Biniam Fisseha Demissie, Mariano Ceccato, Naing Tun Yan, David Lo, Lingxiao Jiang, Christoph Bienert

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

Android malware detection has been an active area of research. In the past decade, several machine learning-based approaches based on different types of features that may characterize Android malware behaviors have been proposed. The usually-analyzed features include API usages and sequences at various abstraction levels (e.g., class and package), extracted using static or dynamic analysis. Additionally, features that characterize permission uses, native API calls and reflection have also been analyzed. Initial works used conventional classifiers such as Random Forest to learn on those features. In recent years, deep learning-based classifiers such as Recurrent Neural Network have been explored. Considering various …

Testsgd: Interpretable Testing Of Neural Networks Against Subtle Group Discrimination, Mengdi Zhang, Jun Sun, Jingyi Wang, Bing Sun

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

Discrimination has been shown in many machine learning applications, which calls for sufficient fairness testing before their deployment in ethic-relevant domains. One widely concerning type of discrimination, testing against group discrimination, mostly hidden, is much less studied, compared with identifying individual discrimination. In this work, we propose TestSGD, an interpretable testing approach which systematically identifies and measures hidden (which we call ‘subtle’) group discrimination of a neural network characterized by conditions over combinations of the sensitive attributes. Specifically, given a neural network, TestSGD first automatically generates an interpretable rule set which categorizes the input space into two groups. Alongside, TestSGD …

Endwatch: A Practical Method For Detecting Non-Termination In Real-World Software, Yao Zhang, Xiaofei Xie, Yi Li, Sen Chen, Cen Zhang, Xiaohong Li

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

Detecting non-termination is crucial for ensuring program correctness and security, such as preventing denial-of-service attacks. While termination analysis has been studied for many years, existing methods have limited scalability and are only effective on small programs. To address this issue, we propose a practical termination checking technique, called EndWatch, for detecting non-termination through testing. Specifically, we introduce two methods to generate non-termination oracles based on checking state revisits, i.e., if the program returns to a previously visited state at the same program location, it does not terminate. The non-termination oracles can be incorporated into testing tools (e.g., AFL used in …

Hercules: Boosting The Performance Of Privacy-Preserving Federated Learning, Guowen Xu, Xingshuo Han, Shengmin Xu, Tianwei Zhang, Hongwei Li, Xinyi Huang, Robert H. Deng

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

In this paper, we address the problem of privacy-preserving federated neural network training with N users. We present Hercules, an efficient and high-precision training framework that can tolerate collusion of up to N−1 users. Hercules follows the POSEIDON framework proposed by Sav et al. (NDSS’21), but makes a qualitative leap in performance with the following contributions: (i) we design a novel parallel homomorphic computation method for matrix operations, which enables fast Single Instruction and Multiple Data (SIMD) operations over ciphertexts. For the multiplication of two h×h dimensional matrices, our method reduces the computation complexity from O(h3) to O(h) . This …

Learning Representations For Effective And Explainable Software Bug Detection And Fixing, Yi Li Aug 2023

Learning Representations For Effective And Explainable Software Bug Detection And Fixing, Yi Li

Dissertations

Software has an integral role in modern life; hence software bugs, which undermine software quality and reliability, have substantial societal and economic implications. The advent of machine learning and deep learning in software engineering has led to major advances in bug detection and fixing approaches, yet they fall short of desired precision and recall. This shortfall arises from the absence of a 'bridge,' known as learning code representations, that can transform information from source code into a suitable representation for effective processing via machine and deep learning.

This dissertation builds such a bridge. Specifically, it presents solutions for effectively learning …

Fortifying Robustness: Unveiling The Intricacies Of Training And Inference Vulnerabilities In Centralized And Federated Neural Networks, Guanxiong Liu

Dissertations

Neural network (NN) classifiers have gained significant traction in diverse domains such as natural language processing, computer vision, and cybersecurity, owing to their remarkable ability to approximate complex latent distributions from data. Nevertheless, the conventional assumption of an attack-free operating environment has been challenged by the emergence of adversarial examples. These perturbed samples, which are typically imperceptible to human observers, can lead to misclassifications by the NN classifiers. Moreover, recent studies have uncovered the ability of poisoned training data to generate Trojan backdoored classifiers that exhibit misclassification behavior triggered by predefined patterns.

In recent years, significant research efforts have been …

Harnessing Large Language Models To Simulate Realistic Human Responses To Social Engineering Attacks: A Case Study, Mohammad Asfour, Juan Carlos Murillo

International Journal of Cybersecurity Intelligence & Cybercrime

The research publication, “Generative Agents: Interactive Simulacra of Human Behavior,” by Stanford and Google in 2023 established that large language models (LLMs) such as GPT-4 can generate interactive agents with credible and emergent human-like behaviors. However, their application in simulating human responses in cybersecurity scenarios, particularly in social engineering attacks, remains unexplored. In addressing that gap, this study explores the potential of LLMs, specifically the Open AI GPT-4 model, to simulate a broad spectrum of human responses to social engineering attacks that exploit human social behaviors, framing our primary research question: How does the simulated behavior of human targets, based …

Static Malware Family Clustering Via Structural And Functional Characteristics, David George, Andre Mauldin, Josh Mitchell, Sufiyan Mohammed, Robert Slater

SMU Data Science Review

Static and dynamic analyses are the two primary approaches to analyzing malicious applications. The primary distinction between the two is that the application is analyzed without execution in static analysis, whereas the dynamic approach executes the malware and records the behavior exhibited during execution. Although each approach has advantages and disadvantages, dynamic analysis has been more widely accepted and utilized by the research community whereas static analysis has not seen the same attention. This study aims to apply advancements in static analysis techniques to demonstrate the identification of fine-grained functionality, and show, through clustering, how malicious applications may be grouped …

As an emerging sensing data collection paradigm, mobile crowdsensing (MCS) enjoys good scalability and low deployment cost but raises privacy concerns. In this paper, we propose a privacy-preserving MCS system called CROWDFL by seamlessly integrating federated learning (FL) into MCS. At a high level, in order to protect participants' privacy and fully explore participants' computing power, participants in CROWDFL locally process sensing data via FL paradigm and only upload encrypted training models to the server. To this end, we design a secure aggregation algorithm (SecAgg) through the threshold Paillier cryptosystem to aggregate training models in an encrypted form. Also, to …

Cloud Manufacturing(CMfg) is an advanced manufacturing model that caters to fast-paced agile requirements (Putnik, 2012). For manufacturing complex products that require extensive resources, manufacturers explore advanced manufacturing techniques like CMfg as it becomes infeasible to achieve high standards through complete ownership of manufacturing artifacts (Kuan et al., 2011). CMfg, with other names such as Manufacturing as a Service (MaaS) and Cyber Manufacturing (NSF, 2020), addresses the shortcoming of traditional manufacturing by building a virtual cyber enterprise of geographically distributed entities that manufacture custom products through collaboration.

With manufacturing venturing into cyberspace, Digital Trust issues concerning product quality, data, and intellectual …

Cyber Attack Surface Mapping For Offensive Security Testing, Douglas Everson Aug 2023

Cyber Attack Surface Mapping For Offensive Security Testing, Douglas Everson

All Dissertations

Security testing consists of automated processes, like Dynamic Application Security Testing (DAST) and Static Application Security Testing (SAST), as well as manual offensive security testing, like Penetration Testing and Red Teaming. This nonautomated testing is frequently time-constrained and difficult to scale. Previous literature suggests that most research is spent in support of improving fully automated processes or in finding specific vulnerabilities, with little time spent improving the interpretation of the scanned attack surface critical to nonautomated testing. In this work, agglomerative hierarchical clustering is used to compress the Internet-facing hosts of 13 representative companies as collected by the Shodan search …

Upgradeable smart contracts (USCs) have become a key trend in smart contract development, bringing flexibility to otherwise immutable code. However, they also introduce security concerns. On the one hand, they require extensive security knowledge to implement in a secure fashion. On the other hand, they provide new strategic weapons for malicious activities. Thus, it is crucial to fully understand them, especially their security implications in the real-world. To this end, we conduct a large-scale study to systematically reveal the status quo of USCs in the wild. To achieve our goal, we develop a complete USC taxonomy to comprehensively characterize the …

Due to their widespread use on heterogeneous hardware devices, deep learning (DL) models are compiled into executables by DL compilers to fully leverage low-level hardware primitives. This approach allows DL computations to be undertaken at low cost across a variety of computing platforms, including CPUs, GPUs, and various hardware accelerators. We present BTD (Bin to DNN), a decompiler for deep neural network (DNN) executables. BTD takes DNN executables and outputs full model specifications, including types of DNN operators, network topology, dimensions, and parameters that are (nearly) identical to those of the input models. BTD delivers a practical framework to process …

With the increasing reliance on Open Source Software, users are exposed to third-party library vulnerabilities. Software Composition Analysis (SCA) tools have been created to alert users of such vulnerabilities. SCA requires the identification of vulnerability-fixing commits. Prior works have proposed methods that can automatically identify such vulnerability-fixing commits. However, identifying such commits is highly challenging, as only a very small minority of commits are vulnerability fixing. Moreover, code changes can be noisy and difficult to analyze. We observe that noise can occur at different levels of detail, making it challenging to detect vulnerability fixes accurately. To address these challenges and …

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

Sanitizable Signature is a digital signature variant that enables modification operations, allowing sanitizers to alter the signed data in a regulated manner without requiring any interaction with the original signer. It is widely used in scenarios such as healthcare data privacy protection, social networks, secure routing, etc. In existing sanitizable signature schemes, anyone can verify the validity and authenticity of the sanitized message, which results in costly certificate management overhead or complicated key escrow problems. To address these challenges, a designated verifier certificateless sanitizable signature scheme is proposed. This scheme introduces the concept of a designated verifier into sanitizable signatures, …
