Ransomware As Organization: A Comparative Analysis Of Corporate And Criminal Structures In Conti, George Urling
Theses, Dissertations and Capstones
Cybercriminal groups continue to pose major threats to global cybersecurity. One of the most common types of cybercriminal groups are, “Ransomware-as-a-Service (RaaS)" groups, who create and sell ransomware. While research is conducted into the development of ransomware, there is limited reporting on the organizational structure and habits of RaaS groups. In 2022, prominent RaaS group Conti had their chat logs leaked, with the logs ranging from 2020 to 2022. This study seeks to provide a deeper understanding of RaaS group structures by utilizing the Conti leaked logs as a case study. The study, entitled “Ransomware as Organization: A Comparative Analysis …

Investigating Resilience Of Cyberattack Detection Using Lyapunov-Based Economic Model Predictive Control To Data Poisoning, Helen Durand, Akkarakaran Francis Leonard
Chemical Engineering and Materials Science Faculty Research Publications
Cyberattacks may be performed on process control systems due to their integration of networking and computing with physical systems. Prior work in our group has developed detection strategies for nonlinear systems under sensor, actuator, and combined sensor and actuator attacks which can ensure, under characterizable conditions, that attacks can be detected before they cause safety issues. However, this work did not take into account the potential that an attacker could attempt to provide data to a process that causes an attack to remain undetected but that also is consistent with different process dynamics than those which the process has. This …

A major challenge to determining the applicability (and potential outperformance over classical computers) of a quantum computer (QC) within chemical manufacturing processes is quantum noise. Computations by a QC are error-prone due to the influence of quantum noise inherent to the hardware. Errors in control inputs may destabilize a chemical process and lead to unsafe conditions for manufacturing personnel and the environment. The response of a process with control implemented on a QC to errors due to noise must be investigated thoroughly. In this work, the impacts of control input errors due to quantum noise on a process are modeled …

Heuristic Strategies For Process Stabilization Using Proportional Control Implemented By A Noisy Quantum Simulator, Keshav Kasturi Rangan, Helen Durand
Chemical Engineering and Materials Science Faculty Research Publications
Processing and storage demands of industrial processes are causing fields such as optimization, scheduling, and control to assess the effectiveness of quantum devices in their applications. A key objective of control systems is to ensure process safety. This paper focuses on the potential of quantum devices to compute control inputs that maintain system safety despite sources of nondeterminism inherent to currently available quantum devices (quantum noise). In our previous work, we employed a quantum simulator to assess whether a quantum implementation of a proportional (P) control law could stabilize a single-input/single-output system under quantum noise approximated from a real quantum …

Quantum computers (QCs) may find future applications within control systems that operate manufacturing processes. For application within control engineering, quantum algorithm development must be led by control engineers. However, control engineers may face challenges in designing quantum algorithms for control engineering problems. In this work, we provide several path-finding studies that leverage engineering tools such as optimization, encryption, and computational "short-cuts" toward making algorithm design for QC easier for control engineers.
In The Shadow Of Prompts: Adversarial Attacks And Model Cloning In Large Language Models, Kanchon Gharami
In The Shadow Of Prompts: Adversarial Attacks And Model Cloning In Large Language Models, Kanchon Gharami
Doctoral Dissertations and Master's Theses
Large-language models (LLMs) already power mission critical tasks such as command-and-control chat, satellite ground-station automation, military analytics, and cyber-defense. Since most of these services are offered through application programming interfaces (APIs) that still expose full or top-k logits and lack mature safeguards, they present a serious, often overlooked attack surface. Earlier work has shown how to rebuild the output projection layer or distill surface behavior, but no attack has produced a deployable clone within a tight query budget. In this thesis, we address this problem by presenting a practical pipeline for cloning LLMs under constrained settings. The approach first estimates …

Cybersecurity Undergraduate Research Showcase
Biometric data has been widely adopted across various sectors, including digital identity, artificial intelligence (AI), border control, digital wallets, and national identification systems. While biometric identifiers—such as fingerprints, retina scans, and facial recognition—offer reliable and convenient authentication, they also raise significant concerns regarding privacy and security. This paper examines how biometric data is stored, the vulnerabilities it faces, and the most effective methods for safeguarding it. By highlighting the critical importance of biometric data protection, this study reviews current research on approaches, strategies, and policies that enhance security while preserving the functionality and efficiency of biometric systems.

Chemical Engineering and Materials Science Faculty Research Publications
Cyberattacks on control systems can create unprofitable and unsafe operating conditions. To enhance safety and attack resiliency of control systems, cyberattack detection strategies can be developed. Prior work in our group has sought to develop cyberattack detection strategies that are integrated with an advanced control formulation known as Lyapunov-based economic model predictive control (LEMPC), in the sense that the controller properties can be used to analyze closed-loop stability in the presence or absence of undetected attacks. In this work, we consider neural network-approximated control laws, concepts for mitigating cyberattacks on such control laws, and how these ideas elucidate concepts in …
Lyapunov-Based Cyberattack Detection For Distinguishing Between Sensor And Actuator Attacks, Dominic Messina, Helen E. Durand
Lyapunov-Based Cyberattack Detection For Distinguishing Between Sensor And Actuator Attacks, Dominic Messina, Helen E. Durand
Chemical Engineering and Materials Science Faculty Research Publications
Control-theoretic cyberattack detection strategies are control strategies where control theory can be used in the design of the detection policies and analysis of stability properties with and without cyberattacks. This work provides a step toward understanding how to diagnose cyberattacks using control-theoretic cyberattack detection mechanisms. Specifically, we analyze the conditions under which a control-theoretic cyberattack detection strategy developed in our prior work to handle detection of simultaneous actuator and sensor attacks can be extended to distinguish between whether attacks are occurring on sensors or actuators. We present and evaluate heuristic concepts for attempting to diagnose sensor attacks; these again demonstrate …
Profit Considerations For Nonlinear Control-Integrated Cyberattack Detection On Process Actuators, Keshav Kasturi Rangan, Helen E. Durand
Profit Considerations For Nonlinear Control-Integrated Cyberattack Detection On Process Actuators, Keshav Kasturi Rangan, Helen E. Durand
Chemical Engineering and Materials Science Faculty Research Publications
Prior research from our group developed a control-integrated active actuator cyberattack detection strategy. This strategy continuously probed for cyberattacks by updating target steady-states at every sampling time and then moving the process state toward these over the subsequent sampling period. Attacks were fagged if a Lyapunov function around the target steady-state did not decrease over a sampling period. This strategy had the benefit of ensuring safety of the process until an attack was detected. However, the continuous probing for attacks could decrease profit from the process compared to not probing for the attacks, which could limit the attractiveness of the …

Federated Learning Based Autoencoder Ensemble System For Malware Detection On Internet Of Things Devices, Steven Edward Arroyo
Theses and Dissertations
New technologies are being introduced at a rate faster than ever before and smaller in size. Due to the size of these devices, security is often difficult to implement. The existing solution is a firewall-segmented “IoT Network” that only limits the effect of these infected devices on other parts of the network. We propose a lightweight unsupervised hybrid-cloud ensemble anomaly detection system for malware detection. We perform transfer learning using a generalized model trained on multiple IoT device sources to learn network traffic on new devices with minimal computational resources. We further extend our proposed system to utilize federated learning …

To enable common users to capitalize on the power of deep learning, Machine Learning as a Service (MLaaS) has been proposed in the literature, which opens powerful deep learning models of service providers to the public. To protect the data privacy of end users, as well as the model privacy of the server, several state-of-the-art privacy-preserving MLaaS frameworks have also been proposed. Nevertheless, despite the exquisite design of these frameworks to enhance computation efficiency, the computational cost remains expensive for practical applications. To improve the computation efficiency of deep learning (DL) models, model pruning has been adopted as a strategic …

Satellite communication is essential for the exploration and study of space. Satellites allow communications with many devices and systems residing in space and on the surface of celestial bodies from ground stations on Earth. However, with the rise of Ground Station as a Service (GsaaS), the ability to efficiently send action commands to distant satellites must ensure non-repudiation such that an attacker is unable to send malicious commands to distant satellites. Distant satellites are also constrained devices and rely on limited power, meaning security on these devices is minimal. Therefore, this study attempted to propose a novel algorithm to allow …

In investigations, locating missing persons and clandestine remains are imperative. One way that first responder and police agencies can search for the remains is by using cadaver dogs as biological detectors. Cadaver dogs are typically used due to their olfactory sensitivity and ability to detect low concentrations of volatile organic compounds produced by biological remains. Cadaver dogs are typically chosen for their stamina, agility, and olfactory sensitivity. However, what is not taken into account often is the size of the animal and the expense of maintaining and training the animal. Cadaver dogs are typically large breeds that cannot fit in …

Exploits of technology have been an issue in healthcare for many years. Many hospital systems have a problem with “disruptive innovation” when introducing new technology. Disruptive innovation is “an innovation that creates a new market by applying a different set of values, which ultimately overtakes an existing market” (Sensmeier, 2012). Modern healthcare systems are historically slow to accept new technological advancements. This may be because patient-based, provider-based, or industry-wide decisions are tough to implement, giving way to dire consequences. One potential consequence is that healthcare providers may not be able to provide the best possible care to patients. For example, …

Automatic Generation Control (AGC) is a key control system to maintain the power system’s balance between load and supply by maintaining its frequency in a specific range. It collects the tie-line power flow and frequency measurements of each control area to calculate the Area Control Error (ACE) and then adjusts power generation based on the calculated ACE. However, malicious frequency or tie-line power flow measurements can be injected and then AGC is misled to make false power generation adjustments which will harm power system operations. Such attacks can be carefully designed to pass the power system’s existing bad data detection …
