KSU Proceedings on Cybersecurity Education, Research and Practice
Cybersecurity involves a broad range of techniques, including cyber-physical, managerial, and technical, while authentication provides a layer of protection for Information Systems (IS) against data breaches. The recent COVID-19 pandemic brought a tsunami of data breach incidents worldwide. Authentication serves as a mechanism for IS against unauthorized access utilizing various defense techniques, with the most popular and frequently used technique being passwords. However, the dramatic increase of user accounts over the past few decades has exposed the realization that technological measures alone cannot ensure high level of IS security; this leaves the end-users holding a critical role in protecting their …

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems
Older adults face increased safety challenges, such as targeted online fraud and phishing, contributing to the growing technological divide between them and younger adults. Social support from family and friends is often the primary way older adults receive help, but it may also lead to reliance on others. We have conducted an exploratory study to investigate older adults' attitudes and experiences related to mobile social support technologies for mobile safety. We interviewed 18 older adults about their existing support and used the think-aloud method to gather data about a prototype for providing social support during mobile safety challenges. Our findings …

Privacy preserving mechanisms are essential for protecting data in IoT environments. This is particularly challenging as IoT environments often contain heterogeneous resource-constrained devices. One method for protecting privacy is to encrypt data with a pattern or metadata. To prevent information leakage, an evaluation using the pattern must be performed before the data can be retrieved. However, the computational costs associated with typical privacy preserving mechanisms can be costly. This makes such methods ill-suited for resource-constrained devices, as the high energy consumption will quickly drain the battery. This work solves this challenging problem by proposing SyLPEnIoT – Symmetric Lightweight Predicate Encryption …

The Role Of Public And Private Sectors: How To Promote National Cybersecurity Strategies And Critical Infrastructure Protection In Southeastern Europe, Larry Cruz
Independent Study Project (ISP) Collection
This paper seeks to address the important role of public and private interests in protecting critical infrastructure in Southeastern Europe, providing examples from Serbia. While the public sector does have a role in protecting critical infrastructure needs, it is the private sector which holds major oversight of the critical infrastructures of the region, therefore having an important role in maintaining their functionality and protection. The literature in this field argues for more collaboration and information sharing between the public and private sectors of the region, though the task is not as simple as it appears given the varying aspirations of …

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems
The Internet of Things (IoT) is commonly deployed with devices of limited power and computation capability. A centralized IoT architecture provides a simplified management for IoT system but brings redundancy by the unnecessary data traffic with a data center. A decentralized IoT reduces the cost on data traffic and is resilient to the single-point-of failure. The blockchain technique has attracted a large amount of research, which is redeemed as a perspective of decentralized IoT system infrastructure. It also brings new privacy challenges for that the blockchain is a public ledger of all digital events executed and shared among all participants. …

On The Usability (In)Security Of In-App Browsing Interfaces In Mobile Apps, Zicheng Zhang, Daoyuan Wu, Lixiang Li, Debin Gao
Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems
Due to the frequent encountering of web URLs in various application scenarios (e.g., chatting and email reading), many mobile apps build their in-app browsing interfaces (IABIs) to provide a seamless user experience. Although this achieves user-friendliness by avoiding the constant switching between the subject app and the system built-in browser apps, we find that IABIs, if not well designed or customized, could result in usability security risks. In this paper, we conduct the first empirical study on the usability (in)security of in-app browsing interfaces in both Android and iOS apps. Specifically, we collect a dataset of 25 high-profile mobile apps …

Revocable Policy-Based Chameleon Hash, Shengmin Xu, Jianting Ning, Jinhua Ma, Guowen Xu, Jiaming Yuan, Robert H. Deng
Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems
Policy-based chameleon hash (PCH) is a cryptographic building block which finds increasing practical applications. Given a message and an access policy, for any chameleon hash generated by a PCH scheme, a chameleon trapdoor holder whose rewriting privileges satisfy the access policy can amend the underlying message without affecting the hash value. In practice, it is necessary to revoke the rewriting privileges of a trapdoor holder due to various reasons, such as change of positions, compromise of credentials, or malicious behaviours. In this paper, we introduce the notion of revocable PCH (RPCH) and formally define its security. We instantiate a concrete …

Internet Of Things Software And Hardware Architectures And Their Impacts On Forensic Investigations: Current Approaches And Challenges, Abel Alex Boozer, Arun John, Tathagata Mukherjee
Journal of Digital Forensics, Security and Law
The never-before-seen proliferation of interconnected low-power computing devices, patently dubbed the Internet of Things (IoT), is revolutionizing how people, organizations, and malicious actors interact with one another and the Internet. Many of these devices collect data in different forms, be it audio, location data, or user commands. In civil or criminal nature investigations, the data collected can act as evidence for the prosecution or the defense. This data can also be used as a component of cybersecurity efforts. When data is extracted from these devices, investigators are expected to do so using proven methods. Still, unfortunately, given the heterogeneity in …

Journal of Digital Forensics, Security and Law
Dynamic development of IT technology poses new challenges related to the cross-border collection of electronic evidence from the cloud. Many times investigators need to secure data stored on foreign servers directly and then look for solutions on how to turn the data into a legitimate source of evidence. To study the situation and propose solutions, I conducted a survey among Polish representatives of public prosecutors' offices and courts. This paper presents information from digital evidence collection practices across multiple jurisdictions. I stated that representatives from the prosecution and the judiciary in Poland are aware of the issues associated with cross-border …

Generative Adversarial Networks For Classic Cryptanalysis, Deanne Charan
Generative Adversarial Networks For Classic Cryptanalysis, Deanne Charan
Master's Projects
The necessity of protecting critical information has been understood for millennia. Although classic ciphers have inherent weaknesses in comparison to modern ciphers, many classic ciphers are extremely challenging to break in practice. Machine learning techniques, such as hidden Markov models (HMM), have recently been applied with success to various classic cryptanalysis problems. In this research, we consider the effectiveness of the deep learning technique CipherGAN---which is based on the well- established generative adversarial network (GAN) architecture---for classic cipher cryptanalysis. We experiment extensively with CipherGAN on a number of classic ciphers, and we compare our results to those obtained using HMMs.

Virtualizing …
Enterprise Resource Allocation For Intruder Detection And Interception, Adam B. Haywood
Enterprise Resource Allocation For Intruder Detection And Interception, Adam B. Haywood
Theses and Dissertations
This research considers the problem of an intruder attempting to traverse a defender's territory in which the defender locates and employs disparate sets of resources to lower the probability of a successful intrusion. The research is conducted in the form of three related research components. The first component examines the problem in which the defender subdivides their territory into spatial stages and knows the plan of intrusion. Alternative resource-probability modeling techniques as well as variable bounding techniques are examined to improve the convergence of global solvers for this nonlinear, nonconvex optimization problem. The second component studies a similar problem but …
Determining Physical Characteristics Through Information Leakage In 802.11ac Beamforming, Albert D. Taglieri
Determining Physical Characteristics Through Information Leakage In 802.11ac Beamforming, Albert D. Taglieri
Theses and Dissertations
The risk of information leakage in 802.11ac allows an eavesdropper to monitor wireless traffic and correlate physical locations between devices, as well as environment changes such as the motion of a person. Previous pattern-analysis mitigation methods, which used nonexistent devices to fool an eavesdropper, are not effective in an 802.11ac network, because devices on the network can be correlated to their physical location, which a nonexistent device does not have. Further, additional information about motion in the target environment can be observed and analyzed, providing a new potential for pattern analysis and sensing. 802.11ac makes it possible to plug in …

Robust And Ethical Data Governance Critical To Growth In Digital Age, Themin Suwardy, Melvin Yong
Research Collection School Of Accountancy
With increasing digitalisation, and companies collecting an ever-increasing amount of their customer and business data, organisations have to become more accountable to stakeholders such as regulators, customers and investors on the issue of data. Observers say expectations are also increasing, with incidents of data breaches capturing much media attention. Just as corporate governance encompasses more than just compliance, experts say data governance is more than just data protection and security but also about creating value.

Adversarial Attacks And Mitigation For Anomaly Detectors Of Cyber-Physical Systems, Yifan Jia, Jingyi Wang, Christopher M. Poskitt, Sudipta Chattopadhyay, Jun Sun, Yuqi Chen
Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems
The threats faced by cyber-physical systems (CPSs) in critical infrastructure have motivated research into a multitude of attack detection mechanisms, including anomaly detectors based on neural network models. The effectiveness of anomaly detectors can be assessed by subjecting them to test suites of attacks, but less consideration has been given to adversarial attackers that craft noise specifically designed to deceive them. While successfully applied in domains such as images and audio, adversarial attacks are much harder to implement in CPSs due to the presence of other built-in defence mechanisms such as rule checkers (or invariant checkers). In this work, we …

Secure And Verifiable Outsourced Data Dimension Reduction On Dynamic Data, Zhenzhu Chen, Anmin Fu, Robert H. Deng, Ximeng Liu, Yang Yang, Yinghui Zhang
Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems
Dimensionality reduction aims at reducing redundant information in big data and hence making data analysis more efficient. Resource-constrained enterprises or individuals often outsource this time-consuming job to the cloud for saving storage and computing resources. However, due to inadequate supervision, the privacy and security of outsourced data have been a serious concern to data owners. In this paper, we propose a privacypreserving and verifiable outsourcing scheme for data dimension reduction, based on incremental Non-negative Matrix Factorization (NMF) method. We emphasize the importance of incremental data processing, exploiting the properties of NMF to enable data dynamics in consideration of data updating …
An Empirical Study Of Thermal Attacks On Edge Platforms, Tyler Holmes
An Empirical Study Of Thermal Attacks On Edge Platforms, Tyler Holmes
Symposium of Student Scholars
Cloud-edge systems are vulnerable to thermal attacks as the increased energy consumption may remain undetected, while occurring alongside normal, CPU-intensive applications. The purpose of our research is to study thermal effects on modern edge systems. We also analyze how performance is affected from the increased heat and identify preventative measures. We speculate that due to the technology being a recent innovation, research on cloud-edge devices and thermal attacks is scarce. Other research focuses on server systems rather than edge platforms. In our paper, we use a Raspberry Pi 4 and a CPU-intensive application to represent thermal attacks on cloud-edge systems. …

Is Australia Really Lost In Space?, Brett Biddington
Research outputs 2014 to 2021
Australia is one of the world's most wealthy nations. Yet to the surprise and puzzlement of many observers, Australian governments over many years steadfastly refused to become involved in space activities in ways judged to be commensurate to the nation's wealth and place in the world. Repeated calls to establish a space agency were ignored or firmly rejected and civil and commercial investment in space activities was limited. In the past decade, there have been substantial developments and new investments in the policy, national security, civil and commercial domains. Perhaps the salient feature is the establishment of the Australian Space …

Forensic Artifact Finder (Forensicaf): An Approach & Tool For Leveraging Crowd-Sourced Curated Forensic Artifacts, Tyler Balon, Krikor Herlopian, Ibrahim Baggili, Cinthya Grajeda-Mendez
Electrical & Computer Engineering and Computer Science Faculty Publications
Current methods for artifact analysis and understanding depend on investigator expertise. Experienced and technically savvy examiners spend a lot of time reverse engineering applications while attempting to find crumbs they leave behind on systems. This takes away valuable time from the investigative process, and slows down forensic examination. Furthermore, when specific artifact knowledge is gained, it stays within the respective forensic units. To combat these challenges, we present ForensicAF, an approach for leveraging curated, crowd-sourced artifacts from the Artifact Genome Project (AGP). The approach has the overarching goal of uncovering forensically relevant artifacts from storage media. We explain our approach …
