Exploring Leader-Initiated Change Management For Adopting Cloud Services, Nancy Marie Landreville Jan 2016

Exploring Leader-Initiated Change Management For Adopting Cloud Services, Nancy Marie Landreville

Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies

Cloud technology requires a virtualized ubiquitous and scalable environment with shared resources. The general problem in cloud adoption is the absence of standardization across organizations. A standardized approach remained elusive since the inception of the Cloud First mandate. The purpose of this study was to explore leader-initiated change management (LICM) practices in cloud adoption within organizations. The theoretical framework included the classical theories of Kurt Lewin's organization change management, leader-member exchange, intentional change, and appreciative inquiry. A multiple case study design approach facilitated the exploration of LICM-value added practices to identify standardization in cloud adoption practices. Data collection included semistructured …

Electronic Warrant Systems: The Effect Of Advanced Technologies On Arrest Performance, Gerald Lee Ward Jan 2016

Electronic Warrant Systems: The Effect Of Advanced Technologies On Arrest Performance, Gerald Lee Ward

Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies

Public safety is negatively affected when arrest warrant information is not available to law enforcement officers, judges, prosecutors, and other criminal justice practitioners. The U.S. Government and the criminal justice community have advocated for electronic warrant systems (e-warrants). Peace officers know that when e-warrant systems deliver warrant information to them immediately from multiple jurisdictions, their safety is increased. However, the factors that cause these e-warrants systems to improve safety are not known. The purpose of this historical data analysis study was to determine if the use of e-warrant systems resulted in shorter clearance times than the use of legacy paper-based …

Sentiment Classification Using Negation As A Proxy For Negative Sentiment, Bruno Ohana, Brendan Tierney, Sarah Jane Delany Jan 2016

Sentiment Classification Using Negation As A Proxy For Negative Sentiment, Bruno Ohana, Brendan Tierney, Sarah Jane Delany

Conference papers

We explore the relationship between negated text and neg- ative sentiment in the task of sentiment classification. We propose a novel adjustment factor based on negation occur- rences as a proxy for negative sentiment that can be applied to lexicon-based classifiers equipped with a negation detec- tion pre-processing step. We performed an experiment on a multi-domain customer reviews dataset obtaining accuracy improvements over a baseline, and we further improved our results using out-of-domain data to calibrate the adjustment factor. We see future work possibilities in exploring nega- tion detection refinements, and expanding the experiment to a broader spectrum of opinionated …

Celestial Sources For Random Number Generation, Erin Chapman, Jerina Grewar, Tim Natusch Jan 2016

Celestial Sources For Random Number Generation, Erin Chapman, Jerina Grewar, Tim Natusch

Australian Information Security Management Conference

In this paper, we present an alternative method of gathering seed data for random number generation (RNG) in cryptographic applications. Our proposed method utilises the inherent randomness of signal data from celestial sources in radio astronomy to provide seeds for RNG. The data sets were collected from two separate celestial sources, and run through the SHA-256 algorithm to deskew the data and produce random numbers with a uniform distribution. The resulting data sets pass all tests in the NIST Statistical Test Suite for random data, with a mean of 98.9% of the 512 total bitstreams from the two sources passing …

Electronic transfer of prescriptions is an essential element of electronic medications management. Unfortunately, current manual and preliminary electronic transfer of prescription methods are not patient focussed, leading to a suboptimal solution for the patient. This is increasingly relevant in the push for more patient engagement in their own healthcare. The area is highly controlled by legislation and regulation. Through research and an analysis of the possible methods to improve and personalise electronic transfer of prescriptions, this paper provides an overview of these conclusions, and presents an alternative technical solution. The solution has been derived from a number of experiments in …

Cryptography With Right-Angled Artin Groups, Ramon Flores, Delaram Kahrobaei Jan 2016

Cryptography With Right-Angled Artin Groups, Ramon Flores, Delaram Kahrobaei

Publications and Research

In this paper we propose right-angled Artin groups as a platform for secret sharing schemes based on the efficiency (linear time) of the word problem. Inspired by previous work of Grigoriev-Shpilrain in the context of graphs, we define two new problems: Subgroup Isomorphism Problem and Group Homomorphism Problem. Based on them, we also propose two new authentication schemes. For right-angled Artin groups, the Group Homomorphism and Graph Homomorphism problems are equivalent, and the later is known to be NP-complete. In the case of the Subgroup Isomorphism problem, we bring some results due to Bridson who shows there are right-angled Artin …

Engineering Technology Faculty Publications

A novel methodology for the calculation, visualisation and analysis of the Reconfigurable Machinery Efficient Workspace (RMEW), based on the twist angles, is presented in this paper. The machinery's kinematic parameters are used for calculating the workspace, while the efficient workspace is associated with the machinery's path and includes the end-effector position and orientation. To analyse and visualise many different machinery efficient workspaces at the same time, the calculation is based on the previously developed and validated complex reconfigurable machinery's kinematic structure named n-DOF Global Kinematic Model (n-GKM). An industrial robot is used as an example to demonstrate …

An Approach To Automatic Detection Of Suspicious Individuals In A Crowd, Satabdi Mukherjee Jan 2016

An Approach To Automatic Detection Of Suspicious Individuals In A Crowd, Satabdi Mukherjee

Dissertations and Theses

This paper describes an approach to identify individuals with suspicious objects in a crowd. It is based on a well-known image retrieval problem as applied to mobile visual search. In many cases, the process of building a hierarchical tree uses k-means clustering followed by geometric verification. However, the number of clusters is not known in advance, and sometimes it is randomly generated. This may lead to a congested clustering which can cause problems in grouping large real-time data. To overcome this problem we have applied the Indian Buffet stochastic process approach in this paper to the clustering problem. We present …

Lastly, we lay the foundation for future work around additional collaborative metrics, features and …

Vehicle Engine Classification Using Of Laser Vibrometry Feature Extraction, Chi Him Liu Jan 2016

Vehicle Engine Classification Using Of Laser Vibrometry Feature Extraction, Chi Him Liu

Dissertations and Theses

Used as a non-invasive and remote sensor, the laser Doppler vibrometer (LDV) has been used in many different applications, such as inspection of aircrafts, bridge and structure and remote voice acquisition. However, using LDV as a vehicle surveillance device has not been feasible due to the lack of systematic investigations on its behavioral properties. In this thesis, the LDV data from different vehicles are examined and features are extracted. A tone-pitch indexing (TPI) scheme is developed to classify different vehicles by exploiting the engine’s periodic vibrations that are transferred throughout the vehicle’s body. Using the TPI with a two-layer feed-forward …

Evaluating Distributed Word Representations For Predicting Missing Words In Sentences, Saniya Saifee

Dissertations and Theses

In recent years, the distributed representation of words in vector space or word embeddings have become very popular as they have shown significant improvements in many statistical natural language processing (NLP) tasks as compared to traditional language models like Ngram. In this thesis, we explored various state-of-the-art methods like Latent Semantic Analysis, word2vec, and GloVe to learn the distributed representation of words. Their performance was compared based on the accuracy achieved when tasked with selecting the right missing word in the sentence, given five possible options. For this NLP task we trained each of these methods using a training corpus …

A Comparison Of Concurrent Correctness Criteria For Shared Memory Based Data Structure, Dipanjan Bhattacharya Jan 2016

A Comparison Of Concurrent Correctness Criteria For Shared Memory Based Data Structure, Dipanjan Bhattacharya

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Developing concurrent algorithms requires safety and liveness to be defined in order to understand their proper behavior. Safety refers to the correctness criteria while liveness is the progress guarantee. Nowadays there are a variety of correctness conditions for concurrent objects. The way these correctness conditions differ and the various trade-offs they present with respect to performance, usability, and progress guarantees is poorly understood. This presents a daunting task for the developers and users of such concurrent algorithms who are trying to better understand the correctness of their code and the various trade-offs associated with their design choices and use. The …

Quantitative Framework For Social Cultural Interactions, Taranjeet Singh Bhatia Jan 2016

Quantitative Framework For Social Cultural Interactions, Taranjeet Singh Bhatia

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

For an autonomous robot or software agent to participate in the social life of humans, it must have a way to perform a calculus of social behavior. Such a calculus must have explanatory power (it must provide a coherent theory for why the humans act the way they do), and predictive power (it must provide some plausible events from the predicted future actions of the humans). This dissertation describes a series of contributions that would allow agents observing or interacting with humans to perform a calculus of social behavior taking into account cultural conventions and socially acceptable behavior models. We …

Similarity Measurement Of Breast Cancer Mammographic Images Using Combination Of Mesh Distance Fourier Transform And Global Features, Ravi Kasaudhan

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Similarity measurement in breast cancer is an important aspect of determining the vulnerability of detected masses based on the previous cases. It is used to retrieve the most similar image for a given mammographic query image from a collection of previously archived images. By analyzing these results, doctors and radiologists can more accurately diagnose early-stage breast cancer and determine the best treatment. The direct result is better prognoses for breast cancer patients. Similarity measurement in images has always been a challenging task in the field of pattern recognition. A widely-adopted strategy in Content-Based Image Retrieval (CBIR) is comparison of local …
