K-D Tree-Segmented Block Truncation Coding For Image Compression, Proceso L. Fernandez Jr, Ryan Rey M. Daga
K-D Tree-Segmented Block Truncation Coding For Image Compression, Proceso L. Fernandez Jr, Ryan Rey M. Daga
Department of Information Systems & Computer Science Faculty Publications
Block truncation coding (BTC) is a class of image compression algorithms whose main technique is the partitioning of an image into pixel blocks that are then each encoded using a representative set of pixel values. It is commonly used because of its simplicity and low computational complexity. The Quadtree-segmented BTC (QTS-BTC), which utilizes a dynamic hierarchical segmentation technique, is among the most efficient in the BTC class. In this study, we propose a new BTC variant that introduces two ideas: (1) the use of a k-d tree for segmentation and (2) the use of a Mean Squared Error (MSE) threshold …

Identifying Parameters For Robust Network Growth Using Attachment Kernels: A Case Study On Directed And Undirected Networks, Ahmed F. Abdelzaher
Identifying Parameters For Robust Network Growth Using Attachment Kernels: A Case Study On Directed And Undirected Networks, Ahmed F. Abdelzaher
Theses and Dissertations
Network growing mechanisms are used to construct random networks that have structural behaviors similar to existing networks such as genetic networks, in efforts of understanding the evolution of complex topologies. Popular mechanisms, such as preferential attachment, are capable of preserving network features such as the degree distribution. However, little is known about such randomly grown structures regarding robustness to disturbances (e.g., edge deletions). Moreover, preferential attachment does not target optimizing the network's functionality, such as information flow. Here, we consider a network to be optimal if it's natural functionality is relatively high in addition to possessing some degree of robustness …

Online social systems have emerged as a popular medium for people in society to communicate with each other. Among the most important reasons why people communicate is to share emotional problems, but most online social systems are uncomfortable or unsafe spaces for this purpose. This has led to the rise of online emotional support systems, where users needing to speak to someone can anonymously connect to a crowd of trained listeners for a one-on-one conversation. To better understand who, how and when users utilize these systems, and to evaluate their safety, this thesis offers a comprehensive examination of the characteristics …

Browse all Theses and Dissertations
Automatic generation of summaries that capture the salient aspects of a search resultset (i.e., automatic summarization) has become an important task in biomedical research. Automatic summarization offers an avenue for overcoming the information overload problem prevalent in large online digital libraries. However, across many of the knowledge-driven approaches for automatic summarization it is not always clear which features highly impact or influence the quality of a summary. Instead, there has been considerable focus on utilizing schema knowledge to facilitate browsing and exploration of generated summaries a posteriori. Informative features should not be ignored, since they could be utilized to help …

Ontology alignment systems establish the semantic links between ontologies that enable knowledge from various sources and domains to be used by automated applications in many different ways. Unfortunately, these systems are not perfect. Currently, the results of even the best-performing automated alignment systems need to be manually verified in order to be fully trusted. Ontology alignment researchers have turned to crowdsourcing platforms such as Amazon's Mechanical Turk to accomplish this. However, there has been little systematic analysis of the accuracy of crowdsourcing for alignment verification and the establishment of best practices. In this work, we analyze the impact of the …

Communication Patterns And Strategies In Software Development Communities Of Practice, Shreya Kumar
Communication Patterns And Strategies In Software Development Communities Of Practice, Shreya Kumar
Dissertations, Master's Theses and Master's Reports
Some of the greatest challenges in the relatively new field of software development lie in the decidedly old technology of communication between humans. Software projects require sophisticated and varied communication skills because software developers work in a world of incomplete, imperfect information where teams evolve rapidly in response to evolving requirements and changing collaborators. While prescriptive models for software process such as Agile suggest ways of doing, in reality these codified practices must adapt to the complexities of a real workplace. Patterns, rather than rules of behavior within software process are more suitable to the varied and mutable nature of …

How Can We Have A Better Public Transportation System? –An Exploratory Agent Based Model, Boyu Liu
Pomona Senior Theses
Public transportation plays an integral part in a city's development, but transportation professionals disagree about whether it is feasible to increase the capacity of public transportation systems at a reasonable cost; and if it is, how. This study develops an agent based model that aims to answer this question and provide a framework to compare the effects of improvements in different aspects of the public transportation service. The results of this study show that it is possible to increase ridership enough to compensate for the increased operational cost, but only in certain circumstances. Interesting phenomenon that might have showed up …

Theses and Dissertations
Gene order gets evolved under events such as rearrangements, duplications, and losses, which can change both the order and content along the genome, through the long history of genome evolution. Recently, the accumulation of genomic sequences provides researchers with the chance to handle long-standing problems about the phylogenies, or evolutionary histories, of sets of species, and ancestral genomic content and orders. Over the past few years, such problems have been proven so interesting that a large number of algorithms have been proposed in the attempt to resolve them, following different standards. The work presented in this dissertation focuses on algorithms …
Automated Refactoring Of Legacy Java Software To Enumerated Types, Raffi Khatchadourian
Automated Refactoring Of Legacy Java Software To Enumerated Types, Raffi Khatchadourian
Publications and Research
Modern Java languages introduce several new features that offer significant improvements over older Java technology. In this article we consider the new enum construct, which provides language support for enumerated types. Prior to recent Java languages, programmers needed to employ various patterns (e.g., the weak enum pattern) to compensate for the absence of enumerated types in Java. Unfortunately, these compensation patterns lack several highly-desirable properties of the enum construct, most notably, type safety. We present a novel fully-automated approach for transforming legacy Java code to use the new enumeration construct. This semantics-preserving approach increases type safety, produces code that is …

For the development of intelligent traffic applications, we need to address diversity in observations from physical sensors which give weather, traffic flow, parking information; we also need to do the same with social media, which provides live commentary of various events in a city. The extraction of relevant events and the semantic integration of numeric values from sensors, unstructured text from Twitter, and semi- structured data from city authorities is a challenging physical-cyber-social data integration problem. In order to address the challenge of both scalability …
Learning Hierarchically Decomposable Concepts With Active Over-Labeling, Yuji Mo, Stephen Scott, Doug Downey
Learning Hierarchically Decomposable Concepts With Active Over-Labeling, Yuji Mo, Stephen Scott, Doug Downey
School of Computing: Conference and Workshop Papers
Many classification tasks target high-level concepts that can be decomposed into a hierarchy of finer-grained subconcepts. For example, some string entities that are Locations are also Attractions, some Attractions are Museums, etc. Such hierarchies are common in named entity recognition (NER), document classification, and biological sequence analysis. We present a new approach for learning hierarchically decomposable concepts. The approach learns a high-level classifier (e.g., location vs. non-location) by seperately learning multiple finer-grained classifiers (e.g., museum vs. non-museum), and then combining the results. Soliciting labels at a finer level of granularity than that of the target concept is a new approach …

Cloud technology requires a virtualized ubiquitous and scalable environment with shared resources. The general problem in cloud adoption is the absence of standardization across organizations. A standardized approach remained elusive since the inception of the Cloud First mandate. The purpose of this study was to explore leader-initiated change management (LICM) practices in cloud adoption within organizations. The theoretical framework included the classical theories of Kurt Lewin's organization change management, leader-member exchange, intentional change, and appreciative inquiry. A multiple case study design approach facilitated the exploration of LICM-value added practices to identify standardization in cloud adoption practices. Data collection included semistructured …
